He became known as the Marquis of Haihun. This particular form of gold ingots was named linzhi (qilin-hoof) and mati (horse-hoof) to match auspicious omens: a white qilin unicorn and a “heavenly” horse, by a later emperor in 95 BC. 94A. ROMAN MARBLE STATUE OF EPHEBUS
Ca. AD 150
Starting Price: £8000
A finely executed marble torso representing the fragmentary figure of a youthful male, most likely an ephebe. It is preserved from the neck to mid-thigh, with both arms and the lower legs missing. The sculpture, carved in fine-grained white marble, displays a warm, subtly variegated surface and retains light patination in several recessed areas, including the underarms, indicating age and long-term exposure to environmental agents. The figure is rendered in contrapposto, with the weight subtly shifted to the left leg, the right leg set slightly forward and relaxed. This is particularly visible in the tilt of the hips and the gentle curvature of the lower abdomen, conveying a sense of latent movement. The musculature is idealised, with smooth planes and understated transitions rather than anatomical exaggeration. The thorax is broad and gently modelled, with the pectorals moderately defined but not hypertrophic. The delineation of the costal arch and oblique lines suggests an attentive observation of youthful anatomy, characteristic of Roman classicising tendencies. Fo similar see: C. Gasparri, M.A.

101. LARGE ROMAN MARBLE FIGURE OF CUPID HOLDING GRAPESEX R. SORGE COLLECTION
Ca. 200 AD
Starting Price: £5000
A finely carved in extremely high relief ‘virtually in the round’ section of a marble sarcophagus depicting the god Eros (Roman Cupid) or one of the Erotes (Roman Cupids) holding a large bunch of har- vested grapes in his left hand. Eros, depicted as a nude cherub, is posed standing in contrapposto, with his weight shifted to his left leg, one arm angled to carry the fruit of the vine, the other miss- ing its forearm, perhaps once carrying more grapes (a common theme of Hellenistic and Roman art) or his bow. In addition to possessing an impressive understanding of anatomy and an ability to render flesh from stone, the sculptor of this piece was skilled in communicating naturalism in Cupid’s facial features - generous- ly lidded, almond-shaped eyes, apple cheeks, pudgy nose, and full lips - framed by a wavy coiffure adorned by a leafy crown. Eros was the mischievous yet endearing god of love and, accord- ing to some classical writers, a son of the goddess Aphrodite.

102. ROMAN MARBLE RELIEF WITH SOLDIER
Ca. AD 100
Starting Price: £3000
A beautiful relief carved marble panel featuring a helmeted soldier and robed man, both in profile with their heads to the right. The first man is slightly higher in placement, perhaps suggesting higher status, such as a general. His face is thin, consisting of an aquiline nose and short beard and curly coiffure. The top of his robe or toga is draped around his shoulders. Before him is the soldier with a curly beard who wears a crested helmet. Perhaps this scene depicted a procession or event marking a military triumph. The Romans developed new forms of public monuments to celebrate their military victories, including arches and columns. These architectural masterpieces have been found throughout the Roman Empire and are often relief carved with Roman soldiers. This fragment may come from one such relief and is an impressive testament to Roman military and artistic achievements.
