A carved wooden sarcophagus panel with a mask with painted detail, depicting a stylised face with large, almond-shaped eyes outlined in black, arched brows, and a faint smile. The face is framed by a blue tripartite wig extending over the shoulders. Below the chin is a broad painted collar in red, black, and blue tones, decorated with alternating geometric motifs arranged in parallel bands. CARTONNAGE WITH CENTRAL FUNERARY COLLAR
Late Period to ptolemaic Period, Ca. 664 - 30 BC
A group of painted cartonnage fragments. At the top is a fragment depicting the sky goddess Nut, shown in profile with a solar disc above her head and outstretched wings in alternating blue, black, and red. Below is a narrower fragment with a band of stylised pendants and circular motifs. The lower section consists of a single large fragment combining a winged scarab and a broad collar, the wings extending horizontally in red and blue, while the collar is formed of concentric rows of alternating red, blue, black, and yellow lotus flowers, wedjat eyes, and circles, terminating in falcon-head terminals surmounted by sun discs with uraei. Painted in black, red and blue, across the shoulder runs a continuous frieze of Nilotic plants: alternating papyrus umbels, lotus buds and circular rosettes, framed by circumferential bands. A rectangular sandstone relief carved with the circular solar disc of the Aten at the centre, from which a dense fan of straight rays descends across the field. 566. EGYPTIAN FRAGMENT OF SANDSTONE FUNERARY STELA
XXV Dynasty 747-664 BC

An Egyptian fragment of a funerary stela. This is likely the second register of the stela: the offerings for the deceased and part of his son’s face performing funerary offering are still visible. The deceased son’s name is recorded in the hieroglyphic inscription above the scene: “ his beloved son Ptahemheb”. Below this inscription, an attendant is depicted with a head-cone, which is a type of conical ornament used in ancient Egypt. This ornament is often seen in paintings and bas-reliefs but was only confirmed through archaeological evidence in 2009. To the right, a broad register displays votive food offerings, suggesting that the context of this relief served a religious or ceremonial role.

575. EGYPTIAN MUMMY OF IBIS

Late Period to Ptolemaic Period, Ca. 664 - 30 BC
A mummified ibis, carefully wrapped in layers of linen with traces of resinous coating. The elongated form preserves the body’s outline, with stylised features painted or modelled on the wrappings. Such mummies were dedicated in temples, symbolising devotion and sustaining the cult of the gods. They reflect both ritual piety and the economic scale of animal cults in the later phases of Egyptian religion.

A marble torso of Venus de Milo type. The chest is compact with round, high breasts and clear collarbones. The abdomen is finely modelled with a small navel and marked iliac creases, the waist turning slightly to the left. The back shows shallow shoulder blades, a long spinal groove, and rounded buttocks. The fullness of the form and bend of the body of our torso recalls in part the Aphrodite of Knidos, a late Classical (ca. 350 B.C.) creation of the master sculptor Praxiteles. C.M. An iron pugio with a broad, tapering blade, straight guard, and a hilt composed of a cylindrical insert bound by median and terminal collars. A flat pommel is surmounted by three biconical protrusions arranged in a row. The handle is made of bone, extremely rare to be preserved and intact. The scabbard is of sheet bronze, decorated on the obverse with panels of incised vertical lines within finely chased borders, flanked by a pair of broad lateral brackets. The chape is rounded and embellished with a central domed boss encircled by applied pellets. A terracotta askos modelled in the form of a recumbent ram, with a rounded body and short, projecting legs, surmounted by a cylindrical spout rising vertically from the back. A small additional spout is positioned low on the chest between the forelegs. The head is sculpted in high relief with prominent eyes, defined nostrils, and tightly curled horns sweeping backwards. Painted decoration in dark pigment covers the entire body with a repetitive pattern imitating fleece. An outstanding pair of bronze and iron fittings, each comprising a spiral-fluted column with an iron rod projecting from the Ionic order, surmounted by a bust of Bacchus. Bacchus is depicted wearing a goat pelt, with a hoof draped over his shoulder. His face is crowned by a centrally-parted coiffure, adorned with a wreath of ivy leaves and berries. His hair is pulled back into a low chignon, with wavy locks cascading over his shoulders. Both matching busts rest upon rectangular plinths with hatched borders and a looped handle joins the plinths to the upper end of the back of the busts.

The gold ring has a large oval-shaped bezel cell, which tapers into a thick, round-section band. The intaglio is set within a high-carat (20-22ct), possibly later gold ring. In Greco-Roman mythology, a faun is a woodland deity or nature spirit, often associated with fertility and the pastoral environment. Fauns are typically depicted as half-human, half-goat beings, embodying a harmonious connection between the Roman people and the natural world.

A large cast bronze disc phalera with a high-relief image of Mithras, standing with a dog. Mithras is known for the tauroctony scene, where he slays a bull. In this scene, a dog is present, reflecting the animal’s role in the ritual. This scene appears in Mithraic art throughout the Roman Empire, highlighting Mithras’ Eastern origins and his importance in Roman religion.
