A huge thank you to his team was the first response of Ngāi Tukairangi No 2 Trust area manager Liam Sykes when receiving the 2025 Horticentre Group Horticulturalist of the Year Award.
“It’s a team effort,” he said, acknowledging some of the 25 full-time staff in the room It s nice to accept it, but really, there’s a saying ‘if you want to go fast, go on your own. If you want to go far, take your team with you. Thank you to my team, nothing happens without them.”
The Tauranga-based Trust has made an extraordinary impact on Hawke’s Bay’s horticulture sector in just a few years. Since entering the region in 2017 with the purchase of kiwifruit blocks, it expanded into apples in 2022, and Liam now manages 110 hectares of organic
gold kiwifruit and premium apple crops in Hawke’s Bay
The judges said the Trust’s approach to orchard development was “bold and innovative with large-scale investments in modern infrastructure including five metre concrete post structures and hail netting—showcasing their commitment to resilience and futureproofing. Their willingness to take risks and embrace new technologies sets them apart as industry leaders.”
Cyclone Gabrielle saw damage to kiwifruit blocks on Swamp Road, Korokipo Road and especially Moteo

Biodiversity champion Kay Griffiths has been given the 2025 Laurie Dowling Memorial Award for outstanding contribution to agriculture
In announcing the award, Ahuriri Tributaries Trust chairman Rob Pattullo said Kay had put huge dedication into her work, above and beyond what one would expect, including being out “all hours of the night” tracking wildlife
“Kay currently leads a vital biodiversity project around Hawke’s Bay to identify and protect roosting homes for the critically endangered New Zealand native pekapeka tou roa, or long-tailed bat,” he said “Predators like possums, feral cats and rats and a loss of the places bats like to live – old trees and lowland forests – has seen their threat status increase to nationally critical, the highest ranking. Without active management there is a high likelihood of this native bat becoming extinct.”
Kay’s passion for conservation and wildlife management has been strong since childhood and was put into action when she joined the Conservation Corps in 1990 in Nelson. She then returned to Hawke s Bay – firstly to run the Department of Conversation’s summer recreational programme, then after a few years overseas, she took up a ranger position at DOC’s Ongaonga Field Centre for six years, while also doing a postgraduate Diploma in Wildlife Management at Otago University In 2001, she became program manager for biodiversity threats
for Hawke’s Bay
After four years of that challenging role, Kay decided it was time to get back into the field and, with partner Craig Single set up the Conservation Company, doing weed control and ecological plantings that have done a world of good in protecting high ecological value areas.
“The contribution Kay, Craig and their team are making to the protection and enhancement of our regions rich biodiversity will ultimately lead to much better environmental outcomes for all of us as farmers and growers in Hawke’s Bay, Rob said.
Kay is project manager at Puahanui Bush owned by the Hudson family at Gwavas and looks after A’Deane’s bush near Ashley Clinton.
She is involved with a community project in Central Hawke’s Bay to bring back the once-thriving forest giant, the kahikatea Two pockets of less than five hectares of remnant forest remain less than 20 kilometres apart near Elsthorpe and Omakere With landowner and active community support, schools and locals are invited to help with seed collecting, growing plants and then planting them Omakere School students help to monitor the changes at one of the sites She has also been working with both Tukipo and Porangahau catchment groups working out ways to enhance biodiversity in those areas.
Kay thanked the willingness and support of the many landowners they’d worked with over the years, as well as staff at regional councils QEII National Trust and the Department of Conservation, and one of her biggest supporters, Marie Taylor at Plant Hawke’s Bay
This award is presented to an outstanding individual who has contributed significantly through their work or voluntarily for the betterment of agriculture within the Hawke s Bay Region. This is in keeping with the ideals of the late Laurie Dowling who was a man of the land and passionate about the primary sector in Hawke’s Bay He worked unselfishly to advance farming throughout his consultancy career
