ThefirstistheŌtakitoNorth ofLevinExpressway(O2NL) continuationoftheKāpiti ExpresswayfromWellington. Thankfully,NZTAhasabandoned itsplanstodowngradethenew development,decidingtogoahead withtheoriginaldesignandprovide anyadditionalfundingrequired.
Thesecondistheproposed ManawatūRegionalFreightRing Road(MRFRR)forwhichweare preparingastrongbusinesscase. Thiswillcomplementthetwo
TeUtanganuiis uniqueastheonly placeinNewZealand wherethereareadjacent road,railandairtransport optionsandistakingshapeasthe country’sthirdmajorsupply-chain hub.Amongthenewlyconsented facilitiesareFoodstuffs’70,000 sqmcoolstoreextensionand Prepack’snewdistributioncentre. It’sworthnotingthattwoofNew Zealand’slargestprivatelyowned transportfirmsPTS/AutoLogistics andBoothsTransportusethehub andcityastheirHQs.Nationally, thesetwocompaniesoperateover 800truckandtrailerunitsbetween them.

Establishedin1900,thesociety hasplayedacentralrolein theculturallifeofthecity forgenerations.Whatbeganas thePalmerstonNorthAmateur DramaticSocietyhasevolvedover time,changingnamesandvenues, adaptingtoshiftingtrendsand challenges,andbuildingapowerful legacyofcommunity,creativity,and resilience.Today,underthetrading nameActThreeProductions,the
societyisasstrongasever—thriving onthepassionofvolunteerswho arecommittedtobringingquality musicaltheatretotheManawatū region.
PresidentAllanNagy,whohas beeninvolvedwiththesocietyfor over50years,says2025willbea year-longcelebrationofitshistory andpeople.“It’sahugeoccasion notjustforus,butforallthepeople who’vebeeninvolvedinthesociety overtheyears,”saysNagy.“We’ve becomeafamilyforsomany people.”
Plannedeventsincludea specialanniversarycelebrationin Novemberandaseriesofarchive displaysopentoallmembers pastandpresent.“It’sabout rememberingwherewe’vecome fromandacknowledgingthepeople who’vebuiltthissocietyovermore thanacentury,”saysNagy.
Earlierthisyear,ActThree Productionsproudlyhostedthe MTNZWhakakāconference,a nationalgatheringoftheatremakersfromaroundthecountry. Thelongweekendwasachance toshowcasePalmerstonNorth’s hospitalityandvibranttheatre community.“Wekickedoff theweekendwithabirthday celebration,”saysNagy,“anditwas afantasticopportunityforfamilies andvisitorstoconnectwithourcity andourstory.”
ActThree’sstoryhasn’talways beensmoothsailing.Thegroup hasfacedmajorchallenges— includingbeingdisplacedfrom multiplevenuesandweathering thedevastationoftheCOVID-19 pandemic.Atonepointduringthe
pandemic,thesocietyhadjust$136 leftona$30,000overdraft.“We wererightroyallyinthepoo,”recalls Nagy.“Butthemembershippulled together,andwemadeitwork, alongwiththePalmerstonNorth communityandbusinesseswho supportus.”Communitysupport andallourvolunteersareahuge partofwhowearetoday.
Oneofthebigthingsthat’s beenasuccessforasocietyisthe camaraderiethatwe’vegot.Our bylineis‘Hewhānautuatinitini’, whichtranslatesto‘afamilyof manystrands’.Thatissomething thathasalwaysbeenfeltwhileI’ve beenhereinthesociety,isthatwe areabigfamilyand we’retheretohelpandsupport eachotherthroughallsortsof things,notjustbeingonstage andperforming.Ithinkthat isprobablyoneofthebiggest successesofoursociety.
Theotherthingisthatweallhave acan-doattitude.
Today,ActThreeProductions isbasedinTheSquareincentral PalmerstonNorth,operating rehearsalstudiosanddreaming bigaboutthefuture.“We’dloveto onedayreturntoapurpose-built theatrespacethatseatsaround 500,”saysNagy.
Morethananything,thesociety isatestamenttowhatcanhappen whenpeopleworktogetherfor theloveoftheatre.“We’reall volunteers,”saysNagy.“Andour greatestpaymentisthejoyofdoing ittogether.That’swhat’skeptus goingfor125years—andwhatwill carryusforwardforthenext125.”

InOctober2024,Flintoffwas namedVetNurseoftheYear bytheNewZealandVeterinary NursingAssociation(NZVNA),and nowoverthelasttwoyearshehas accomplishedhavingatotalof12 professionalarticlesacceptedfor publishingacrossNewZealand, AustraliaandtheUnitedKingdom.
“I’vewrittenninearticlesforthe NZVNAsofar,allofthesehave focussedonanaesthesiasome specificallyforequinewhilethe othersareaboutcompanionanimals. OneforAustraliawasspecificto equineanaesthesia,whilemytwofor theUKwasatwo-partseriescalled‘A isforAirway:Intubationforcommon species’.Thesetwopartswere focussedoncompanionanimals,small mammalsandbirds,”explainsFlintoff.
“It’sanhonourtohavemyworks chosenforpublication,especiallyin theUK.It’snotespeciallycommonto haveoverseasauthorscontributing soI’mreallypleased.I’dalsoliketo acknowledgemyanaesthesiologist mentor,DrHirokiSano,whohas kindlypeer-reviewedeveryarticleI’ve submitted.”

calleduptojointheNorthIsland Team.Thetopicforthedebatewas ‘ThegrassisgreenerintheSouth Island’–ahotlycontendedtopic asyoucouldimagine!Andwithmy friend,colleagueandMinisterforthe SouthIsland,HonJamesMeager,on theopposingSouthIslandTeamthere wasnoshortageofhealthybanter andagoodfewlaughsalongtheway. PalmerstonNorthis easytogetaround, mostlyflat,and largelyfreefrom thecongestion thatplaguesother cities.Wehave goodemployment opportunities, excellentschools, plentyofparksand recreationfacilities, lotsofsportsclubs,great walksandmountainbikingtracks nearby,andwehavesomeofthe mostaffordablehousingofany regionalcityinNewZealand.Not tomentionthatwe’reinthemiddle ofeverything,onlyhalfanhour fromabeach,acouplehourstothe mountainsforhikingorsnowsports, andnotfarfromashoworarugby gameinWellington.
PalmerstonNorthshouldbeaplace youngpeopleneverleave-butIdo wantourcitytobetheplacethey choosetoreturntowhen it’stimetostartafamily, buildacareer,orset upabusiness.
Tosupportthis vision,weneed tomakeroom formorehousing development. That’swhyI’ve backedefforts toreviewour DistrictPlantomake developmentmore accessibleandsupported fundingforthenewCityWest suburb,Kakatanigata.
Thisqualityoflifeisn’taccidental; itreliesinpartongoodplanning anddecision-makingatthecouncil table.Idon’tnecessarilybelieve
We’vegottohavegoodtransport network.Sensibleroaddesignhelps reducecongestion,whichiswhy Iopposedthepoorlydesigned FeatherstonStreet“upgrade”.It’s alsowhyIhaveopposedcontinuing theStreetsForPeopleprogram aroundtheSquareandBroadway, whichdeliveredthedisastrous redesignoftheSquareEastroad betweentheCoffeeClubandthe Plazawhichnowhassomeofthe
worstcongestioninthecity. Makingsurecouncilliveswithin itsmeansisalsoimportant.I’ve advocatedforsensiblecouncil spending,limitingnewvehicle purchases,reducingconsultancy costs,andprioritisingessential investmentslikeroadsandwater overnicebutnotcrucialupgrades.
PalmerstonNorthhaseverything itneedstobeNewZealand’smost liveable,affordable,andaccessible regionalcity.Withtheupcoming councilelections,I’daskyouto considerwhatkindofcityyouwant ustobecome,andwhichcandidates offerapracticalandsustainablepath tothatfuture.
AnkitBansalleadsthechargeon Risingretailcrimeand communitysafetywerethe centralfocusofapacked publicforumheldatFocalPoint Cinema,hostedbyretailerAnkit Bansal.
Themeetingbroughttogether businessowners,lawenforcement officials,andcommunityleaders toaddressthegrowingconcerns aroundshoplifting,youthcrime, homelessness,andanti-social behaviourinthecity.
Openingtheforum,Bansalshared hispersonalconnectiontothe issue,stating,“Retailcrimeisnot
victimless.Weneedtoensurethat victimsareattheheartofourjustice system.”Hewelcomedattendees includingSunnyKaushal,Chairofthe MinisterialAdvisoryGrouponRetail Crime,PoliceAreaCommanderRoss Grantham,InspectorAshleyGurney, representativesfromtheManawatu BusinessChamber,PalmyBID,and citycouncillors.
KaushalpraisedBansal’sadvocacy onbehalfoflocalretailersandtold theaudiencethatMinisterialadvisory groupwerefocusedondelivering practicallegislativesolutionsto restoreconfidenceamongretailers.
Henotedthatretailcrimehas doubledsince2019,nowcostingthe country$2.7billionannually.Violent crimehassurged47%inthattime. Thegrouphassubmittedpapersto theMinisteronshoplifting,trespass lawreform,andfacialrecognition technology—currentlyunderreview bythePrivacyCommissioner.Anew lawonCitizensArresthasalready beenreleased.
“Weareheretolistentoretailers andrestoreconfidence,”Kaushal said.
TheforumfeaturedalivelyQ&A session.Retailersvoicedconcerns aboutyouthcrime,shopliftingunder $500,andhomeless-relatedantisocialbehaviour.Bansalmoderated thediscussionincludingreading questionsfromthoseunableto attendandpushingforclearer answersonpoliceresponsiveness andlegalprotectionsforretailers.
Policeconfirmedtheir commitmenttorecordingall incidents,encouragingretailersto
reporteverythingfrompettytheft tointimidation.Policeencouraged contacting111forin-progresscrimes and105forpastevents.Grantham reassuredattendeesthatdespite resourcingchallenges,prosecutions arepursued.Concernsaroundyouth crimewereraised,withmentionof intimidationbyyoungoffenders. Granthamsaidearlyintervention remainsthegoal,supportedby youthunitsanddataanalysisteams.
Kaushalreiteratedthegroup’s independenceanditsroleinholding governmentaccountable.“Weare notheretobesilenced.Weare heretopushforreallegislative changebasedonevidenceandbest practices,”hesaid.

Thecampisnosightseeingtour.It’s ahands-on,immersiveprogramme designedtobuildglobalcitizenship, encouragecross-culturalfriendships, andgiveourstudentsafreshand dynamicviewoftheworld.
KateHarridge,International RelationsandEducationAdvisorat PalmerstonNorthCityCouncil,is leadingtheinitiativeandcouldn’tbe moreenthusiastic.

PalmerstonNorthGirls’HighSchool studentBrookeMurray,15,isoneof thestudentsmakingthetrip.“I’m reallyexcitedtoseeaculturethat’s completelydifferenttowhatIknow,” Brookesays.“Ican’twaittomeetthe otherstudentsandjustlearnwhat theirdailylifeislikeforthemand thinkit’sgoingtobeareallyeyeopeningexperience.”Brookesays she’sespeciallycurioustoseewhat lifeislikeinabustlingcityofoversix millionpeople,“It’shardtoimagine whatacitythatbigfeelslike.I’ma littlenervous,butmostlyexcited!”
