Coupledwiththisisaslightdropinon-farm inflation.Thisislargelyduetolowerinterest rates–interestrateshavefallenby13.9 percent–buthelpedbysmalldecreases
insomeinputprices,arareoccurrencefor farminputprices.
Beef+LambNewZealand’sannualon-farm inflationreportexpectsinterestratesfor farmlendingtoeasefurtherduringtheyear andremainstablein2026.
Hopefully,thedisciplinesweappliedto ourbusinessesinthepastcoupleofyears willgeneratebenefitsaswerecoverfrom whathasbeenachallengingoperating environment.
Itisalsoagoodtimetoconsiderhowwe canbuildmorerobustfarmbusinesses becauseitisinevitablethatwewill faceclimaticchallengesandeconomic downturnsinthefuture.
Ibelievetechnologywillplayanimportant roleinthisandifusedwell,itcanhelp maketheboatgofaster.
IattendedarecentB+LNZfielddayin theWairarapawhichlookedatthree technologies-smartcollars,dronesanda productthatkilledwormlarvaeonpasture -andhowthesecouldhelpusgrowand utilisemoregrass,bemoreefficientwith ourinputsandmanageparasitesintheface ofincreasingdrenchresistance.
Whiletechnologywillneverreplacegood old-fashionedstockmanship,usedtogether, theycanhelpdriveefficienciesandmake farmingmoreenjoyable.
Onamoresombrenote,arecentreportby OrmeandAssociatesshowedthatsheep andbeeffarmsarecontinuingtobesoldfor conversionintoforestry,particularlycarbon farming,atanalarmingrate.
Whatismostconcerningisthetypeof landthatisbeingsold,withanincreasing amountofgoodpastoralfarminglandbeing convertedintoforests.
Since2017,whole-farmsalesofsheepand beeffarmstoforestrytotalover300,000ha andaconservativeestimateisthatmore thantwomillionstockunitshavebeenlost toafforestationinthattime.
Demandforourredmeatexportscontinues togrowandyetweareshrinkingour sectorthroughpoorpolicysettingswhich incentivisewhole-farmsalesforconversion toforestry.
Treesplayanimportantroleonfarms.They provideshade,shelter,aestheticvalue andwhenplantedcorrectly,cangenerate returnsfromlessproductiveareasofhill country.
Whatnoneofuswanttoseeislandthatis suitableforfoodproductionbeingblanket plantedinpinesandB+LNZwillcontinueto advocateforactiononthisissue.

Thelevelofconfidencehasdefinitelylifted withinthesheepandbeefsectorwithstock pricesatverygoodlevels.TheNewZealand dairysectorisverybusywiththesettlements ofmanydiaryfarmshavingjusttakenplace andsomeexceptionalvaluesachievedin manycases.FromwhatI’mhearingthe bullsalesarereflectingthiswithmostsales clearingthebullsandagainverygoodprices achieved.
Thisreflectswellwithsomegoodfarmsales takingplaceinCentralHawke’sBayand Hawke’sBayingeneral.Therehavebeen around18farmsalesover200hectaresin theregion,andtheserangefromaround $10,000/hato$18,500/ha.Therearealot
ofvariableswhichcomedowntolocation, contourandinfrastructure.Forestrycontinues toplayapartinsales;however,itisnoted thelevelshaveshiftedconsiderably.
Thehorticulturalmarketisstillslowhowever therearealsogoodsignsofactivityas growershaveenjoyedafavourableseason withcropquantitiesacrossfruitandcropping generallyhavingenjoyedaverygoodseason willeventuallygivesomeconfidenceto continuetopurchaseanddevelopproperty. Therearesomeobvioussignsofchange inthesectorwithinterestratesmoving down,howeverthecostofproductionis notnecessarilyfollowingsuitandcontinues totestbottomlinefiguresforfarmers.The
goodsignsofredmeatvalueincreasing reallydoeshelptoencouragefarmersto pushforwardandproducehighqualityNZ product.

FederatedFarmers’‘SaveourSheep’ campaignhastakenamajorstep forwardwiththeGovernment introducinglegislationtostopcarbon forestryonproductivefarmland.
Tougherrestrictionswereannouncedin Decemberlastyearandit’sbeenfrustrating forfarmerstoseetensofthousandsof hectaresofproductivefarmlandcontinueto beblanketedinpines.
So,it’sreallypositivetoseelegislation finallyintroducedtoParliamentforselect committeereview.
FederatedFarmersaren’tanti-forestry. Exotictreeshaveaplaceandaroletoplay whenitcomestosensiblelanduseand incomediversification.Thenewrestrictions won’thindergenuineproductionforestryor farmforestry.
Carbonforestryistheproblem.Ourviewis thattheEmissionsTradingScheme(ETS) hasbeenscrewingthescruminfavourof forestryoverfarmingbysubsidisingpine treestooffsetfossilfuelemissions.
NewZealandistheonlycountryinthe worldthatallows100%carbonoffsetting throughforestry,withothercountries recognisingtheriskandputtingrestrictions inplace.
We’renottheonlyoneswhothinkthisis wrong.TheParliamentaryCommissioner fortheEnvironment,Forest&Bird,the WorldWildlifeFund–eventheGreen party’sagriculturalspokespersonSteven Abel–wantpinesoutoftheETS.
FederatedFarmersisnowcallingonthe GovernmenttourgentlyreviewtheETS andchangetherulestoeitherlimitorstop theoffsettingoffossilfuelemissionswith forestry.
TheFeds’SaveourSheepplatformis closelyalliedtothismission,ofcourse.
WiththeETSeffectivelysubsidisingpine trees,it’spushingsheepfarmersoffthe land,nevertoreturn.
Oncethebackboneofoureconomy,sheep arefastbecominganendangeredspecies here.
InjustonegenerationNewZealandhas lostovertwo-thirdsofournationalflock, reducingfromover70millionsheepin 1982tofewerthan25millionsheeptoday. Themaindriverforthiscollapseinrecent years?Carbonforestry.
Since2017,300,000hectaresofsheep andbeefcountryhavebeenswallowedup bypines.
Hawke’sBayhasn’tbeenimmunefromthis unfortunatetrend.StatisticsNZrecords thatourprovincewashometojustunder5 millionsheepin1990.By2023,thathad plummetedto2.78m.
WhileFederatedFarmersiswelcomingthe restrictionsoncarbonforestry,wesaythe proposedlegislationdoesn’tgofarenough onLandUseClass(LUC)6land.Thisland isoftenfirstfarmsandbreedingcountry supplyinglambstoHawke’sBay’scropping andhorticulturalsectors.
Thenewrulesallow15,000hectaresof LUC6farmlandtogointoforestryeligible forETScredits,allocatedbyaballot processeachyear.
Thatisahugeamountoflandstillgoing intopinetreesanother150,000hectaresin thenextdecade.Thatwouldmeantheloss ofmorethan750,000breedingewesifthat weretohappen.

LocatedsixteenkilometresfromHavelock North,theWaipukaWhenuaRestoration Projectisblendingancestralstewardship withmodernfarmingpractices.Ithasbecome amodelforsimilarenvironmentalprojects lookingtoachievenativerevegetationat scale.
TheprojectwasinitiatedbyIwilandowners ontheWaipukaOceanBeachcoast,with supportfromtheHawke’sBayRegional Council.Takinginspirationfromrestoration worksonthenearbyMaraetotaraRiver,the projectaspiredtoenhancelocalindigenous biodiversityandimprovewaterquality.There wasconcernthatsedimentfrombadlyeroding gullieswascontributingtopoorwaterquality intheOceanBeachlagoonwhichisoften unsafeforswimming.
ofBusiness,InnovationandEmployment,and theHawke’sBayRegionalCouncilErosion ControlScheme.Overfouryears,73people wereemployedontheproject,planting, fencing,andcontrollingpestsandweeds. Plantingover180,000nativeseedlingswas nosmalltask.Morethan18kmofnewor upgradedfencingwasrequiredtosecurethe areafromlivestockandferalgoats.Funding wasalsodirectedtomanagingplantand animalpests,sothatnativeseedlingswould havethebestchanceofsurvival.
WarwickHesketh,Hawke’sBayRegionalCouncilPrincipalAdvisor CatchmentManagement,helpstoplantacommemorativePōhutukawatree withPukepukeTangioraEstateChairKaranemaBartletttoacknowledge everyonewhohascontributedtotheWaipukarestorationproject.
PukepukeTangioraEstate,theTeWhaitiTrust, andtheRTMohiEstate,partneredtogether withthegoalofretiringandplanting180 hectaresofgulliesandmarginalhillcountry. ThisincludedfivekilometresoftheWaipuka Streamanditstributaries.AgrantfromMillion Metrescrowdfundingenabledtheplanting andprotectionofakeynativefishspawning sitein2017.However,achievingtheproject’s fullvisionrequiredalotmorefundingand manpower.
Theprojecthitfullsteamin2020after securingnearly$1.8millioninsupportfrom theMinistryforPrimaryIndustries,theMinistry
Fourweeksago,trusteesgatheredwith projectsponsorsandsupporterstocelebrate whathadbeenachallengingbutsuccessful fouryears.Thefullextentoftheplantingis difficulttoseewithoutflyingoverit,sothe trusteeschosetoplantacommemorative pōhutukawatreewhereitcanbeadmiredby anyonetravelingtoWaimārama. Shesaidtheprogramme isbuiltaroundaPacific philosophyofreciprocityandreintegration.
“Itisonlyrightthatwegivethemsomething totakehome,consideringalotofthesocial disruptionthathappensintheRSEsector andwhattheyaregivinguptobehere,”she said.
Theprogrammeincludestwolearning streams.NIULearning,formerlyEssential Learning,introducesskillssuchasfinancial literacy,digitalcapability,healthylivingand
humanrights.MANAVA,theelectivestream, includeshands-onvocationaltrainingin trades,smallbusiness,leadershipand hospitality,alignedtotheneedsoflaboursendingcountries.
Meriamadescribesthemodelascommunitydrivenandculturallygrounded.
“Thekeyforusisthatwehavefacilitators whoarelanguagespeakerssotheycan contextualisethelearning.Thiswillensureit isnottheteamleadersorworkerswhohave
totranslate,”shesaid.“Wearealsointhe processoftranslatingthelearningmaterial forthemaswell.”

Environmentalimprovementsarebecoming partofgoodfarmmanagementinCentral Hawke’sBay,withmanyfarmersseeing thevalueofprojectsthatprotectwaterways, buildbiodiversity,andimprovethefunction andresilienceoftheirland.Theseeffortsare deliveringpracticalgainson-farmwhilealso contributingtowiderenvironmentaloutcomes. ColinTylerisseeingtheresultsfirst-handon his80-hectarecattlepropertyintheTukipo sub-catchment.“Mostoftheenvironmental projectswedoon-farmaren’tsolvingjust oneissue,they’redoingabitofeverything,” hesays.“Whetherit’simprovinggrazing management,reducingnutrientloss,or buildingbiodiversity,they’redeliveringreal, multi-benefitoutcomes.”
AsPrincipalConsultant–Environmentalat Ravensdown,chairoftheTukipoCatchment CareGroup,andamemberoftheexecutive committeeofCentralHawke’sBay’sfarmerledcatchmentcollectiveTukitukiLandCare, Coliniswellplacedtoleadbyexample.On hisownfarm,he’ssteadilyworkingthrough projectsthatimprovewaterquality,reduce sedimentloss,andcreatevaluablehabitatfor nativeplantsandwildlife.
Oneofhismaineffortsoverthepastthree yearshasbeenrestoringanintermittent streamthatrunsthroughtheproperty.Thisis partofafour-yearwetlandproject,andsofar about400metresofstreamhavebeenfenced andplantedtocreateathrivingriparian corridor.Theworklinksintosimilarprojects onneighbouringfarms,helpingbuilda connectedlandscapefornativebirds,insects, andaquaticlife.
“Wecanseetheareafromthehouse,which isprettysatisfying,”saysColin.“It’stakenout someunproductivecountrywherethecattle usedtogetstuckandcauseamess—and nowit’sabeautifulareawithnativebirds poppingupandducksnesting.”
Theprojectispart-fundedbytheMinistry fortheEnvironmentthroughtheTukipo CatchmentCareGroup,withfarmersmatching thefunding50:50.“Thatco-investmentmakes youreallythinkaboutwhatyou’redoingbut havingthecatchmentgroupinvolvedgives youmomentumtogetthejobdone.”
Around3,000nativeshavegoneinsofar, plantedbyfamilyandalocalcrew.Carex andflaxlinethestreamedges,withkaramū, mānuka,andcabbagetreesfurtherback. Plantguardshavemadeanoticeable difference.“They’vebeenagame-changer.
Protectionfromhares,windandweedsreally helps.”
Hissecondmajorprojectfocusedonfencing andplantingaroundafarmdam,which doublesasaduckshootingspotandwater sourceforstock.Supportcameviathe catchmentgroup,withadvicefromtheNZ GameBirdHabitatTrust.Minipondswere addedforbetterduckhabitat.Adigger raisedthedamwalltoincreasecapacity,and natives,willowsandpoplarsnowstabilisethe area.
Well-plannedenvironmentalprojectscan boostfarmproductivitywhileenhancing localecosystems.Withstrongsupportfrom catchmentgroupslikeTukitukiLandCare, theseeffortsarebuildingahealthier,more resilientlandscapeforthefuture.
