American Masters, now celebrating its 30th season, brings a unique perspective to our country’s cultural icons. Each episode takes viewers on a journey through the subject’s creative process. From writers and musicians to artists and actors, American Masters has covered many of the greats. American Masters has been nominated for 70 Emmy Awards and has won 26 of them. The series has also won 12 Peabody Awards and an Oscar. Each episode reveals the style and substance of its subject. This month on WYCC PBS Chicago, learn more about an architect, a director, and an athlete.
Eero Saarinen: The Architect Who Saw the Future Sunday, January 8 at 7 p.m. Saturday, January 14 at 6 p.m. Explore the life and visionary work of Finnish-American modernist architect Eero Saarinen. Some of his well-known structures include St. Louis’ Gateway Arch, New York’s TWA Flight Center at JFK Airport, Virginia’s Dulles Airport, and several colleges at Yale University. His son, Eric Saarinen, visits the sites of his father’s work on a cathartic journey.
By Sidney Lumet Sunday, January 15 at 7 p.m. Film legend Sidney Lumet tells his own story with candor, humor, and grace. He reveals what matters to him as an artist and as a human being. This episode features clips from Lumet’s 44 films, made over the course of 50 years. Lumet is known as one of the most accomplished, influential, and socially conscious directors in the history of cinema.
Althea Sunday, January 29 at 7 p.m. Althea Gibson was a truant from the rough streets of Harlem who went on to become a remarkable tennis player. She was the first African American to play and win at Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals—a decade before Arthur Ashe. Her life and achievements transcend sports and have entered the annals of African American history.

This month, WYCC PBS Chicago is airing a number of programs focused on different health concerns and healthcare. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Plan to Survive: Coping with a Breast Cancer Diagnosis, airing Sunday, January 8 at 2:30 p.m., follows one woman’s story as she makes many difficult decisions. Epilepsy is an old and mysterious ailment. Hear powerful, intimate stories about patients, families, and doctors fighting on the front lines for new treatments and new insights during Seized: Inside the Mystery of Epilepsy, airing Sunday, January 8 at 4 p.m. In Living with Parkinson’s: Caring, Support, and Treatment (airing Sunday, January 15 at 2:30 p.m.), meet men and women from all walks of life who struggle to delay their disease progression. ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with
Lidia Bastianich
Lidia Bastianich was born in Istria, which had been part of northeastern Italy but was taken over by Yugoslavia after World War II. The region is now part of Croatia. Her family left Istria in 1956, when she was still a young child, and moved to Trieste in Italy. After living in a refugee camp for two years, Bastianich and her family moved to New York. Bastianich attended Hunter College for two years but dropped out to get married. They were married for 31 years but divorced after Bastianich’s business started to expand even more. Her two children are both involved with her food empire. Bastianich has made a name for herself in the Italian food world. She is an award-winning TV host, a best-selling cookbook author, the owner of multiple restaurants, and has her own line of pastas and sauces. She—along with Mario Batali, Oscar Farinetti, and her son, Joe Bastianich— opened Eataly in downtown Chicago. There are also two locations in New York City and one in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Program: Mary Lou Williams: The Lady Who Swings the Band Focus: Music Grades: 6–8 Airing: Monday, January 2 at 9 p.m. Overview: Mary Lou Williams, an innovative and prolific jazz pianist, composer, and arranger, created some of the most sophisticated big-band hits for popular artists and orchestras of the 1930s. Free Additional Resources: PBS Learning Media has a lesson plan called Point of View: Sharing a Perspective on Music where students listen to a piece of jazz music and are guided to critique and compare the music. The film’s website asks students to describe Mary Lou Williams in one word. After watching two video clips, what would that word be? Students might use Twitter or another social media source to share their word.

A New Way to Learn about the Ocean PBS KIDS’ newest animated program is Splash and Bubbles (airing on WYCC weekdays at 11 a.m. and Saturdays at 7 a.m.). Splash is a yellow fusilier fish and Bubbles is a Mandarin dragonet. Together, they go on adventures with the rest of their fish friends to learn about the world’s ocean habitats. The series was developed with an advisory panel of top marine biologists, digital innovators, and educators. It focuses on marine biology and social-emotional curriculum that covers diversity, individuality, interconnectedness, and learning and discovery.
Kids Museum Passports Did you know that Kids Museum Passports are available through the Chicago Public Library? The passes allow a family of four (including at least one child under 18) to visit 15 Chicago-area museums, including the Shedd Aquarium. If your children want to see the marine life from Splash and Bubbles swimming in real life, this is a great opportunity.
