J
onathan Phillips, author and history professor at Royal Holloway, University of London, takes a 12,000-mile journey to explore the history of Christianity. Ancient Roads from Christ to Constantine includes stops in seven countries in Europe, Northern Africa, and the Middle East. Phillips visits the locations where important moments in Christianity took place, including Bethlehem, Judea, and Rome. Ancient Roads from Christ to Constantine is a six-part documentary series that is both entertaining and enlightening. Throughout the series, Phillips meets with experts who have devoted their lives to the study of Christianity’s history, particularly the period between Jesus Christ and Emperor Constantine. Although Christianity now has more than two billion followers, the early years involved struggle and an eventual triumph against the odds.
Birth of a Faith Sunday, July 2 at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 8 at 6 p.m. The first episode begins in Bethlehem and travels throughout the Holy Land. Phillips uses the Gospels as a guide to trace the life of Jesus from his birth, ministry, passion, and resurrection.

The city of Jerusalem is rocked by war. Phillips traces the crucial battle where powerful heretics claiming special knowledge of Jesus threatened to distort, divide, and destroy the faith.

WYCC PBS Chicago viewers can also appreciate nature from the comfort of their homes by watching a variety of programs about Earth and its plant and animal inhabitants. Traverse Florida’s vast and seldom seen The Forgotten Coast on Saturday, July 1 at 6 p.m. The expedition encounters stunning and rare wildlife, including black bears, manatees, alligators, ancient river fish, and endangered woodpeckers. Changing Seas, airing Sundays, July 2 and 9 at 10:30 a.m., takes viewers on an exciting adventure to the heart of our liquid plant. Explorers and scientists uncover new information that could lead to scientific breakthroughs. Now in its fourth decade of production, NOVA (airing Mondays at 8 p.m. starting July 10) covers scientific topics from the latest technology to the deepest mysteries of the natural world. This month, the
NOVA: Making North America
program covers North America’s natural development and sea creatures. Window in the Waves: The Flower Garden Banks, airing Saturday, July 15 at 11:30 a.m., tells the story of one of the healthiest coral reefs in the world. ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with
Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Portsmouth, England. His family moved to London in 1822, and in 1824 his father was sent to prison for debt. Dickens had to leave school to work in a factory. When Dickens was 15, he started working as a clerk at a solicitor’s office and then as a shorthand reporter in the courts. He later became a journalist. In 1836, he left his job at the newspaper to become a magazine editor. That same year, he also started publishing The Pickwick Papers and wrote two plays. The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, and other well-known works were all first written as serials in magazines and papers. Unlike some other authors from this period who were not as successful during their lifetimes but gained fame later, Dickens was a popular and respected author at the time of his writing. A Christmas Carol, one of three Christmas books, was written in 1843 in just a matter of weeks. The novels he wrote in the 1850s, including Bleak House, were considered darker than his previous works. He spent many years touring and doing public readings, including in the United States. Dickens died in 1870 and is buried at Westminster Abbey in London. Viewers can get to know many of Dickens’ beloved characters during Dickensian, airing Tuesdays at 9 p.m.

Program: The Last Day of World War I Focus: History Grades: 9–12 Airing: Monday, July 17 at 8 p.m. Overview: Michael Palin tells the story of how the First World War ended on November 11, 1918, and reveals the shocking truth that soldiers continued to be killed in battle for many hours after the armistice had been signed.
