Get into the Halloween “spirit” with the Father of Horror Movies, actor Vincent Price.
V
incent Price, born in St. Louis in 1911, built his reputation by playing the villain in countless movies during a career that lasted more than five decades. His first movie role was playing Robert Wade in Service de Luxe in 1938, and his final film appearance was as the Inventor in Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands in 1990. In the 1950s, Price appeared in almost two dozen films. Many of them, such as House of Wax and The Fly, were horror movies. This month, WYCC PBS Chicago is airing two of Price’s films of that era as part of an early Halloween celebration.
House on Haunted Hill Sunday, October 15 at 5 p.m.
Eccentric millionaire Frederick Loren (played by Price) invites five people to stay overnight at a potentially haunted house with him and his fourth wife, Annabelle. Each person who makes it through the night will receive $10,000. After the doors to the spooky mansion are locked for the night, the terror begins.
The Bat
Sunday, October 22 at 5 p.m. A mystery writer rented a country house that had been the scene of multiple murders committed by a criminal known as “The Bat.” The house’s owner, John Fleming, had recently stolen $1 million and hidden it in the house. After Fleming is killed by his friend, Dr. Malcolm Wells (played by Price), the house once again becomes the site of mysterious and dangerous activities.

stationbreak Native American Heritage Several states have started to call Columbus Day “Native American Day” instead to acknowledge the treatment of Native Americans during colonization. This Columbus Day weekend, WYCC PBS Chicago is airing several programs about Native American culture. A charismatic Navajo horseman, Rudy Shebala, guides at-risk teenagers toward the strong medicine of horses during Horse Tribe, airing Sunday, October 8 at 5 p.m. Shebala’s equine skills bring historic Nez Perce horse Badger Creek culture to modern renown. Experience a year in the life of a Blackfeet family during Badger Creek, airing Sunday, October 8 at 6 p.m. The Mombergs are a loving, sober family who run a successful ranch, live a traditional worldview, and are relearning their language. Kaienkwinehtha and Kasennakohe are childhood friends from traditional families living in the Mohawk Community. They both take part in a four-year adolescent passage rites ceremony called Ohero:kon—Under the Husk (airing Sunday, October 8 at 6:30 p.m.) that has been revived in their community. Native Report, airing Sundays at 10:30 a.m., is an entertaining and informative series that listens to tribal elders and talks to some of the most powerful and influential leaders of Indian Country today. ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with
Tavis Smiley
Tavis Smiley is a broadcaster, author, publisher, advocate, and philanthropist. He was born in Gulfport, Mississippi, on September 13, 1964, and grew up in Indiana. Smiley became a national broadcaster in 1996 on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. He was also the host of BET Tonight with Tavis Smiley. He started a radio show in 2001, and is still on the radio with The Tavis Smiley Show on Public Radio International. Smiley has written 19 books, several of which went on to become New York Times Bestsellers. He has written a memoir as well as a book about his friendship with Maya Angelou. Other books have been on topics such as poverty in America, race relations in America, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Smiley started the nonprofit Tavis Smiley Foundation. It provides leadership training and development for America’s youth. It is currently in the midst of a $3 million, four-year campaign called “Ending Poverty: America’s Silent Spaces” to help alleviate endemic poverty in America. These episodes feature classic spooky stories. Free Additional Resources: The U.S. Library of Medicine has created an online exhibition about Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and its enduring importance. This PBS LearningMedia collection uses primary sources to explore Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven.” It is designed to help students develop their critical thinking skills and draw diverse material from libraries, archives, and museums across the United States.

Local Chicago Music Musicology: Live from the Old Town School of Folk Music returns to WYCC PBS Chicago this month. Each episode features one artist or group and includes 45 minutes of concert and 10 minutes of interview, which allows the artists to tell their own story. The series was filmed at the Old Town School of Folk Music right here in Chicago. Viewers can see past full episodes on the WYCC YouTube channel.
