Carrying the Tradition’s Torch

Bea Mondejar
While other schools host acquaintance parties, Oton National High School takes pride in its annual intramural meet. It may not be as grand as those held in private universities in the city, but it revives a tradition deeply woven into the fabric of school life.
Every year, this event shapes the identity of each student. The parade of athletes, clubs, students, teachers, and even stakeholders led by the execoms who worked hard for this revival–marks the beginning of a celebration rooted in unity and spirit. The roaring cheers from different curriculums and the thrill of competition are not mere spectacles; they are customs that nurture identity and belonging.

they are part of the same story.

When the speaker of closing remarks ended his speech. When the final whistle blows. When the declaration of winners and acceptance of defeat, what endures is not just the outcomes of the games but the tradition itself that cements the spirit of unity that defines us all.

Beyond the Game: E-Sports in Schools
For the past decade, a new era of sports has entered the spotlight—not found on the field or on the tables, but online. Following the rise of its global popularity, Electronic Sports or E-Sports has dominated our quickly developing world. With yearly competitions, professional gamers, and professional teams: E-Sports has slowly been recognized as an official sport in many countries. Earning both the love and ambition of spectators and gamers alike. This 2025, Paindis-indis 2025 introduces E-Sports in the form of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Tournament.
Bonafide students of Oton National High School, now being able to participate and show their skills in electronic games, specifically, in Mobile Legends. Having formed their teams, battling together for a spot to represent their curriculum and show that gaming doesn’t have to be physical. After all, every sport has once been a recreational activity before. Giving gaming enthusiasts a chance to hone their talents and show their love for their games can be a route for students to channel what once was a hobby, into a gateway to the future. Now that electronic games such as Mobile Legends have been mainstream for years now, it’s time to put all they have learned to the test.
We are now in the Digital Age, and E-Sports offers a newfound interest in STEM fields as

technology allows us to have the world at the very palms of our hands. Carving a path to improve 21st Century skills to make our youth better equipped for this technologically-reliant society. By introducing E-Sports into schools, it gives a place to students who aren’t interested in traditional sports, a place to fit in, and a chance to engage in school activities. Fostering teamwork, confidence, communication skills, proper coordination, and provides learning opportunities for all who are interested. Being a place where even students with disabilities, different interests, backgrounds, and cultures: can all come together and compete.
While many would argue that it could contribute to videogame addiction or increase the learning curve, E-Sports in schools provides a rigid structure that casual gaming doesn’t have. It includes a strong understanding of the game’s rules, it’s basics, information that changes constantly, increased coordination, rigorous training, and a firmer competitive atmosphere to challenge and expose students to an entirely new world they have yet to step into.
The future is now! and to survive in a world that’s ever-changing, we must learn to adapt.
by the numbers The Seaside Echo & Ang Aplaya
Around 70–80% of global players participate in traditional sports, while about 20–30% engage in esports.
