ISSUE FORTY FIVE - 9 JUNE 2015

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Term 2 continues to proceed in an extremely productive and impressive manner at Aorere College for the vast majority of students.

This newsletter is being distributed to students as per normal but the college is going to trial a new system for the next few newsletters. This will involve only a small number of newsletters being printed and these will be available on request at the main reception area. Newsletters will then be emailed, rather than handed to the students. I would also remind parents that the latest newsletters are also available on the school’s website.

I would appreciate any feedback relating to this new trial.

As we near the business end of term 2, it is crucial that the students focus on academic achievement in all of their classes.

Lateness has become an issue of concern, eg last week in one day over 100 students were late, ie, arrived after 8.40am. This is completely unacceptable and not only disrupts the learning of these students but the learning of all other students when classrooms are entered throughout Period 1. I would really appreciate your support in ensuring that Aorere College students are in the school grounds by 8.40am every day ready to learn.

On Saturday 13 June at 2.30pm the 1st XV plays St Peters College at school, in a match which will be televised. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

On Wednesday June 20th Year 12 and 13 music students attended the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s Discovery concert celebrating 20th century music. The students were treated to a dynamic programme with a range of soloists including violin,

voice and the worlds first Baritone Concerto. The most inspiring point was when Aorere alumnus Nathan Paseta performed with the Auckland Gospel Choir accompanied by the Philharmonia Orchestra.

ART DEPARTMENT

1ST XV UPDATE

The Art Department continues to develop and grow at Aorere College and we are pleased with the progress we are making as a department.

Student achievement is growing significantly with many students gaining course endorsement in 2014. Mrs Soysa, Mr Booth and Miss Zheng are expecting the 2015 Art students to achieve even higher.

This year we have added a new course called Level 1 Art Design (ARD101), this course has a focus on digital/ commercial art and creates a good foundation of skills for our Level 2 and 3 Art Design courses. Our digital Art courses are continuing to grow and we hope to expand on these in the near future. Traditional mediums such as drawing and painting continues to develop in both the Junior and Senior school.

It is amazing to see the amount of talent that our students have.

Just a reminder to Visual Art students, they are expected to attend at least 1 workshop a week.

These are available every interval and lunchtime during the week.

There is also 1 hour after school workshops on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. It is vital that our visual art students are using these workshops as art making can be a time consuming process, especially if they are aiming for excellence.

The Art Department is looking forward to an exhibition at the end of the year, entering some national art competitions, going on a few gallery trips and completing a mural. So a lot to get through, but well worth seeing our students be successful in the Visual Arts Field.

After a tough start to the Auckland competition the Aorere boys managed to record their first win (15-7) for the season against Tangaroa College on Saturday 23 May. Unfortunately we could not repeat this against Dilworth school this past Saturday going down 10-26.

Wednesdays (2.30pm – 4.00pm) and Thursdays (3.30 – 4.30pm) in all subject areas and NCEA levels 1, 2 and 3. Prepare yourselves for internal assessments.

On 26 May, 11 students and 2 staff members went to a poetry workshop in the city. We listened to some ‘dope’ poets and got exposed to lots of ideas, metaphors, experiences and voices.

Among all of that, we wrote some

poetry. It was awesome to see our students be inspired to tell their stories and play with language. Just goes to show there is a bright future for poetry at Aorere! So watch this space.

Brainbee Challenge - five Yr 11 students competed in Round 1 of the Australasian Brain Bee Challenge. Min Chau Dang Vu, 11Nd was selected to compete in Round 2 of the competition in July. He was chosen from more than 580 students to compete, where students are assessed on their recall and understanding of principles in the field of Neuroscience. Well done Min Chau!
