Since returning to school, post the Covid Alert Level 3 lockdown, students and staff have overall settled quickly back into our routines. Unfortunately, as has been the trend nationally, attendance levels particularly in the Senior School, have continued to be inconsistent and are not back to pre Covid norms. Despite this, students in the Senior schools are still tracking favourably with attainment levels at this comparable time of year in 2018/2019. All students in the Junior School are being prepared for e-asTTle testing in both numeracy and literacy, in mid-November. You will be aware that we are working through a consultation process regarding a new timetable approach which is more respondent to students’ needs. Students sub-committees developed positively this year when the student leadership structure was altered. These committees were culture, arts, community, sports, health and wellbeing. Prefects were reduced from their traditional size and had to prove they could lead and contribute positively within one of these core areas of school life. The committees consist of a number of elected student representatives from all Year Levels. Examples of their success include students leading activities in charitable causes e.g. cancer fundraising, anti-bullying and in assemblies via sports’ report, language weeks and cultural performances.

Tragically in the first 2 weeks of Term 4, we lost 2 students, one in Year 12 and one in Year 10. Both had battled bravely against significant long term health conditions most of their lives. However, the mutual respect between the families and the college was very heartening to witness personally. The best of Aorere College comes to the fore in the most difficult of circumstances. The college is in very good heart despite the significant challenges of this 2020 school year. I know the incoming new Principal who is yet to be appointed will continue to develop improved outcomes for both staff and students. See you soon at the Sports’ Awards and Prizegivings, for both the Junior & Senior Schools.
