La primera de las obras de oficinas asociadas que se muestra en esta edición es la Casa en el Potrero de FG Arquitectos, en el Lago Ranco, al sur de Chile.

Esta vivienda se proyecta en un plano horizontal que se funde con el terreno y el paisaje, resolviendo adecuadamente las vistas al lago y el asoleamiento de los recintos interiores.

Le sigue la Sala de Degustaciones de la viña VIA Wines, ubicada en San Rafael, Talca, obra de la oficina Claro Arquitectos, que se integra adecuadamente al entorno, destacando uno de sus salones que vuela levemente sobre el agua con una acertada y fina solución estructural.

Luego se puede apreciar el nuevo edificio de la Municipalidad de Recoleta en Santiago, proyecto de la oficina Prado Arquitectos, quienes ganaron el concurso de arquitectura patrocinado por la AOA. Predomina en la propuesta su proporcionado patio central y el tratamiento del espacio público que incorpora un gran árbol existente.

A continuación se muestran tres estaciones de la extensión de la línea 1 del Metro de Santiago -Manquehue, Hernando de Magallanes y Los Domínicos-, desarrolladas por la oficina Burmeister Arquitectos Consultores. Se destaca la unidad de la propuesta de las tres estaciones con su acertado trabajo de interiorismo y su imagen exterior, que se resuelve con volúmenes simples y rotundos que logran identificarse como elementos urbanos interesantes.

Le sigue la Remodelación del Estadio Monumental de Colo Colo en Santiago, de la oficina Marques Garcés y Asociados Arquitectos, donde se aprecia una atractiva solución estructural de la nueva marquesina de las tribunas.

Finalmente, se muestra el Centro de Deportes y Recreación Codelco, ubicado en Calama, en el norte de nuestro país, de la oficina Rencoret y Ruttimann Arquitectura. Este proyecto sobresale por su composición general, su propuesta de circulaciones y de áreas deportivas, donde se incorpora acertadamente el tratamiento del agua, los volúmenes construidos asociados al tratamiento de las sombras y la vegetación del norte de Chile.

Como complemento a los artículos de las ediciones 14 y 15, donde se mostró la participación de oficinas de la AOA en proyectos de reconstrucción post terremoto 27F, en este número destacamos la acertada y desinteresada intervención de siete oficinas asociadas en la organización y puesta en marcha de algunas escuelas modulares insertas en el programa “Escuelas para Chile”, impulsado por la Fundación Teletón. El logro de haber podido proyectar y supervisar la construcción en los plazos establecidos da cuenta del compromiso y buena calidad profesional de las oficinas involucradas. El mayor aporte a la implantación de las escuelas modulares fue el tratamiento de las circulaciones entre módulos prefabricados.

En la sección dedicada a Concursos de arquitectura se presentan los resultados del concurso para “Anteproyectos de vivienda social en albañilería de ladrillos” y el concurso de ideas “Museo del Vino en el Cerro San Cristóbal”. En ambos podemos apreciar interesantes e innovadoras propuestas arquitectónicas relacionadas a la temática de cada concurso.

Our main article conveys the immense contribution that the architect Alberto Cruz Covarrubias gave to Chilean architecture since the Architecture College of the Catholic University of Valparaíso. Many generations of architects have had the privilege of learning architecture through what Alberto Cruz believes in: the word and the observation are fundamental to every project that accommodates the human habitation. The text prepared by the architects of the same college, Patricio Cáraves, David Jolly and Tomás Browne, talks about architecture as the “ORIENTED EXTENTION THAT ACCOMMODATES”, where Cáraves describes the “Extension”, Jolly the “Oriented” and Browne “That accommodates”. They introduce the foundations of the works of the Amereida Open City and provide us with their very own words. Some drawings and abstract graphic exercises are also shown, taken from Alberto Cruz’ personal notebooks, allowing us to emerge into his observations and contemplations of daily life which accommodate.

The first project of an associate office to be displayed in this edition is the House in the Field by FG Architects, in Ranco Lake in Southern Chile. This house is designed in a horizontal plane that merges with the site and landscape, adequately resolving lake views and sunlight in the interior spaces. Follows, the Tasting Room of the VIA Wines, located in San Rafael, Talca, a project by Claro Architects office, which integrates adequately to the surroundings, high-lighting one of its saloons that flies slightly over the water with a correct and fine structural solution.

Following, the new council building of Recoleta in Santiago can be appreciated, a project by Prado Architects, who won the architecture competition sponsored by the AOA. In the proposal its well proportioned central patio predominates, as well as the treatment of public space that incorporates a great existing tree.

Continuing, three stations are shown of the line 1 extension of the Santiago Underground Metro - Manquehue, Hernando de Magallanes and Los Domínicos-, developed

by Burmeister Architects Consulters. High-lighted is the unity of the proposal for the three stations with correct interior work and outer image, which is solved with simple and polished volumes that manage to identify themselves as interesting urban elements.

The Colo Colo Monumental Stadium Remodelling in Santiago follows, by Marques Garcés and Associated Architects, where an attractive structural solution for the new marquee of the tribunes is appreciated.

Finally, the Codelco Sports and Recreation Centre in Calama, in northern Chile by Rencoret and Ruttimann Architecture, is shown. This project stands out due to its general composition, its circulation and sports areas proposals, where water treatments are accurately incorporated, as well as the constructed volumes associated to the treatment of shades and the vegetation of northern Chile.

As compliment to articles in the editions 14 and 15, where the participation of the AOA offices was shown in post 27F earthquake reconstruction projects, in this edition we high-light the precise and disinterested intervention of seven associated offices in the organization and set-up of some modular schools within the “Schools for Chile” program, impelled by the Teleton Foundation. The achievement of being able to design and supervise the construction within the established deadlines illustrated the commitments and high quality of the professionals in the offices involved. The greatest contribution to the implantation of the modular schools was the treatment of circulations between the prefabricated modules.

In the section dedicated to architectural competitions, the results of both the “Project Drafts Social Housing in brick masonry”, and the idea competition for “Wine Museum in the San Cristóbal Hill”, are presented. We can appreciate interesting and innovative architectural proposals related to the themes of each.

Nuestro reportaje principal da cuenta del inmenso aporte que el arquitecto Alberto Cruz Covarrubias ha entregado a la arquitectura chilena desde la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad Católica de Valparaíso. Muchas generaciones de arquitectos han tenido el privilegio de conocer la arquitectura a través de lo que sostiene Alberto Cruz: la palabra y la observación son los fundamentos de toda obra que da cabida al habitar del hombre. El texto preparado por los arquitectos de la misma escuela, Patricio Cáraves, David Jolly y Tomás Browne, trata de la arquitectura como “EXTENSIÓN ORIENTADADA QUE DA CABIDA”, donde Cáraves aborda la “Extensión”, Jolly el “Orientada” y Browne, “Que da cabida”. Ellos nos introducen en los fundamentos de las obras de la Ciudad Abierta de Amereida y nos regalan su propia palabra. También se muestran algunos dibujos y ejercicios gráficos abstractos, tomados de los cuadernos personales de Alberto Cruz, que nos permite adentrarnos en sus observaciones y contemplaciones de la vida diaria que dan cabida.

Este ensayo se propone abordar, desde la perspectiva que otorga el presente, cómo esta definición de la arquitectura inaugura para ésta y la modernidad en América un nuevo modo de concebirse. Hemos querido hacerlo recurriendo permanentemente a la palabra dicha por Alberto Cruz Covarrubias (Premio Nacional de Arquitectura 1975), y de este modo ubicarnos nosotros, los autores, unos cuantos pasos atrás. Cada cual abordó uno de estos conceptos para expandirlos en la obra edificada, escrita y plástica de Cruz C. Esta modalidad coral resuena con lo que él mismo llamó “la ronda”, aquel modo de obrar en común.

This essay seeks to address, from the perspective afforded by the present, how this definition of architecture, opens for the present and for the modernity in America a new way of conceiving. We wanted to do so by permanently referring to the words of Alberto Cruz Covarrubias (National Architecture Prize 1975), and in this manner locate ourselves, the authors, some steps behind. Each one addresses one of these concepts to expand them with the built, written and plastic work of Cruz C. This form of advisory resonates with what he himself called “the panel”, that way of acting in union with everyone.

INTRODUCCIÓN Por Tomás Browne Covarrubias El lenguaje de manifiesto es común a las vanguardias artísticas del siglo XX. Por citar algunos: “Hay que ser absolutamente moderno”, del poeta A. Rimbaud; “Toda pintura pasada y actual antes del suprematismo (escultura , arte verbal, música) ha estado esclavizada por la forma de la naturaleza y espera su liberación para hablar en su propia lengua y no depender de la razón, del sentido, de la lógica, de la filosofía, de la psicología, de las diferentes leyes de causalidad y de los cambios técnicos de la vida”, de K. Malevvitch (Del Cubismo al Suprematismo, publicado en 1915); o “La arquitectura debe ser considerada como una unidad plástica constituidapor todas las artes, por la industria y la técnica que den origen a la aparición de un nuevo equilibrio”, del manifiesto neoplasticista; y, finalmente, “La arquitectura es el juego sabio, correcto y magnífico de los volúmenes bajo la luz”, de Le Corbusier, entre varias definiciones.

La sentencia de Alberto Cruz Covarrubias de la arquitectura como “extensión orientada que da cabida” propone otra realidad en cuanto sentido y contenido de aquella que se expresa en los textos de los manifiestos citados. Su fuerza no está en el enunciado de una “ecuación” transformadora del hacer del mundo, sino en la potencia de abrir un campo incluyente a interpretar cada vez en cada obra.

En este sentido, “extensión” es el modo de denominar y concebir el espacio arquitectónico a partir de la idea de “tamaño”. El espacio no es un campo neutro de operaciones sin dimensión; al contrario, es un conjunto de relaciones que surgen a partir de la observación del habitar del hombre.

Así lo señala el arquitecto: - “Cuando nuestro propio cuerpo en la oscuridad, entre dormido y despierto, por un grueso ronquido –de esos que se nos escapan desde recién nacidos– oímos el canto del gallo que nos hace oír otro y luego muchos otros cada vez más tenues hasta conformar una suerte de compacto fondo de ya inaudibles cantos de gallos, el espacio es sólo postura, extensión sin tamaños aún.

- Entonces, una vez más, nos encontramos con esas leves sonrisas de algunos habitantes de este Valparaíso que allí en los miradores permanecen ante el atardecer. Y cuando la nube desaparece ellos presienten por unos instantes que el alma del paisaje o el alma de la naturaleza coincide con las suyas. Por ello las sonrisas. El espacio es ahora estados de ánimo.

Hay tamaños, pero ellos son variables.

- Estamos muy atentos a una explicación que alguien escribe en un pizarrón, pero hemos quedado ubicados muy de costado y vemos como conforme a un violento escorzo. Sin embargo tenemos las letras cual si las viésemos redondeadas y así mismo sus inter espacios no disminuidos.

Los tamaños son indeformables.

- Vamos a la orilla del mar; una estrella baja; absolutamente aburridos.

Uno comienza a hablar de esto y de aquello y que las estrellas tienen cinco puntas para campear en los escudos junto a los animales, penachos, guirnaldas o en las proas de los botes, las chimeneas de los barcos. Es lo combinatorio. La combinación de la mujer y el pez: la sirena. Lo combinatorio suspende –para combinar– los tamaños. Tamaños suspendidos de las flores separadas de sus plantas para ser intermediarias entre el paisaje, la ciudad, la casa y nuestro cuerpo; entre nosotros –digamos– y el mundo.

Combinatorio e intermediario: suspensión de los tamaños.

- Tal como en el espejo de un bus vuelve posible un espacio que disminuye, se diría geométricamente e invertido en derecha-izquierda.

Y como estamos en el reino de lo posible quizás este u otro caso venga a posibilitar la posibilidad de un anti-tamaño. Y así nos marchamos de los tamaños. Su límite.

Ahora bien, el acto de habitar es según estos cinco modos de los tamaños.

Habitamos conforme estos cinco simultáneos modos. Podemos decir que ellos constituyen el espacio. Lo importante es que estos modos de los tamaños son irreductibles entre sí. Por tanto el espacio vendría a designar el conjunto de estos cinco irreductibles. Lo que a su vez significa que la palabra espacio designaría tanto al conjunto como a cada uno de sus irreductibles”.(2)

By Tomás Browne Covarrubias The language of manifest is common to the artistic vanguards of the 20th century.

To site some: “It is necessary to be completely modern” by the poet A. Rimbaud, “All past and present paintings, before the suprematism (sculpture, verbal art, music), have been enslaved by the form of nature and hopes for its liberation in order to speak in its own language and not to depend on reason, sense, logic, philosophy, psychology, different causality laws and technical changes of life”, from de K. Malevvitch (in from Cubism to Suprematism, published in 1915); or “architecture must be considered as a plastic unit constituted by all the arts, by industry and by the technique that gives origin to the appearance of a new balance”, of the neo-plastic manifesto; and, finally, “architecture is the wise, correct and magnificent game of the volumes under the light”, of Le Corbusier, amongst several definitions.

Alberto Cruz Covarrubias’ quote referring to architecture as “oriented extension that accommodates” proposes another reality in terms of sense and content than that which is expressed in the texts of the cited manifests. Its strength is not in the statement of a transforming “equation” of doing in the world, but in the power to open an inclusive field to interpret every time in each work.

In this sense, “extension” is the mode of determining and conceiving architectural space from the idea of “size”. Space is not a neutral operations field with no dimension; on the contrary, it’s a set of relations that arise from the observation of men’s living.

This is what the architect points out: - “When our own body, in the dark, between asleep and awake, with a strong snore –those that escape from us from birth– we hear a rooster that makes us soon hear another one, then more, and others more tenuous, until conforming a type of compact fund of inaudible roosters, the space is only posture, extension without sizes still.

- Then, once more, we find ourselves with those light smiles of some inhabitants of Valparaíso that there in the viewing points remain before the sunset. And when the clouds disappear they foresee that the soul of the landscape or the soul of nature coincide with their own. Thus the smiles. The space is now mood states.

There are sizes, but they are variable.

- We are very aware of an explanation that someone writes on the blackboard, but we remain on the side and we show it conforming to a violent foreshortening.

However, we have the letters as if we saw them rounded and even so, its internal spaces are not reduced. Sizes are deformable.

- We go to the seaside; a star descends; we are absolutely bored. One starts to talk about this and that, and that the stars have five points to flag at the shields together with animals, feathers, garlands or on the prows of boats, the chimneys of ships. It is the combination. The combination of a woman and a fish: a mermaid. The combination suspends –to combine sizes. Sizes suspended from the flowers separated from its plants to be intermediaries between landscape, city, house and our body, between us –let us say– and the world. Combined and intermediate: size suspension.

- Just like in the mirror of a bus a space that decreases becomes possible, it would be said geometrically and inverted in right-left. And since we are in the kingdom of the possible maybe this or another case comes to make possible the possibility of an anti-size. And thus we leave the sizes. Its limit.

However, the act of habiting is according to these five size modes. We inhabit according to these simultaneous five modes. We can say that they constitute the space. The important thing is that these modes of sizes are irreducible to one another. Therefore, space would come to designate the set of these five irreducibles. This in turn means that the word space would appoint both overall and at each of its irreducibles”.(2)

1934. Ingresa a la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad Católica de Chile.

1950. Formulación de “Observación Arquitectónica”, conjunción de dibujos y textos tomados directamente del acontecer de la ciudad.

1952. Conformación de un lugar para la relación Poesía–Arquitectura. Se traslada a la Universidad Católica de Valparaíso para formar el Instituto de Arquitectura, junto al poeta Godofredo Iommi, el escultor Claudio Girola y los arquitectos Miguel Eyquem, Francisco Méndez, Jaime Bellalta, José Vial, Fabio Cruz y Arturo Baeza.

El Instituto se caracteriza por su apertura a la universalidad de los saberes y como espacio de reflexión e investigación para la creación arquitectónica: la observación “del acto y la forma”.

1960. Concepción grupal de “Amereida”: el poema de la destinación del ser americano.

1965. Realización de la primera travesía de Amereida, viaje por el continente americano que tuvo como fin concebir una ética propia, integrando en dicho discurrir a poetas, filósofos, pintores y escultores chilenos, argentinos y europeos.

1970. Concreción de la travesía de Amereida en la fundación de la Ciudad AbiertaAmereida, ubicada en Ritoque, Valparaíso. En ella se postula la igualdad de los oficios en la unidad de Vida, Trabajo y Estudio.

1967. Propicia un movimiento para la reorganización universitaria, a partir del cual, entre otras consecuencias, se funda en Instituto de Arte de la Universidad Católica de Valparaíso.

1975. Recibe el Premio Nacional de Arquitectura, otorgado por el Colegio de Arquitectos de Chile.

1984. Formulación de los “Originales” de América, textos de los distintos quehaceres que abren nuevas elaboraciones de la tradición creativa. El primero de ellos es Amereida y la realización de las “Obras de Travesías” como parte del plan de estudios de los talleres de la Escuela de Arquitectura. También el estudio de los “algoritmos” matemáticos, la “Santidad de la Obra” (el fin de la obra como ofrenda a Dios) y los “Diálogos” de Platón.

2000. Recapitulación de su pensamiento arquitectónico en el libro “Don – Arquitectura”.

2004. Libro “Amereida - Palladio, Carta a los Arquitectos Europeos”, en colaboración con Bruno Barla.

2010. Libro “El Acto Arquitectónico”, estudio referido a la observación en la arquitectura.

“Lo visible no es -podríamos decir- unidimensional, sino multidimensional. Éstas son, una: que ve lo que nos envuelve y nos deja dentro, que ve lo que está ante. Otra: evoca lo ausente. Sea que evoque en estados suyos anteriores o venideros; sea que evoque otras cosas o formas cercanas o lejanas, aún las más distantes”.

The visible is not –we could say– one-dimensional, but multidimensional. These are; one: that sees what surrounds us and leaves us inside, that sees what is before; another: Evokes the absent. Whether it is to evoke in one’s past or future states; whether it evokes other things near and far, even the most distant”.

La orientación es habitualmente una referencia respecto del transcurso del sol; por eso los planos de arquitectura señalan la relación de la obra respecto de éste como una información relevante para la compresión del proyecto.

La extensión “orientada” refiere en este caso a una complejidad mayor, cual es que a las dimensiones habituales de construcción de largo, ancho y alto se introduce el concepto de lejanía, que se concretiza en la forma arquitectónica como construcción de una relación entre dos límites: el de la forma misma y su cerramiento y el encuentro de ésta (la forma) con la lejanía que no es cerramiento. Ambos límites son, por cierto, en el ámbito de lo visible. “Lo visible no es –podríamos decir– unidimensional, sino multidimensional. Éstas son, una: que ve lo que nos envuelve y nos deja dentro, que ve lo que está ante. Otra: evoca lo ausente. Sea que evoque en estados suyos anteriores o venideros; sea que evoque otras cosas o formas cercanas o lejanas, aún las más distantes”.(3) La extensión orientada “que da cabida”, por último, escapa a la concepción habitual de los ’ismos’ propios de la modernidad. La arquitectura es concebida habitualmente como acción que responde a determinados problemas con determinadas soluciones. Dar cabida, al contrario, es la manifestación en el espacio de un modo de habitar en permanencia, que acoge los actos de la vida proyectándolos en una trascendencia.

Esta realidad se formula primeramente en el proyecto para la Capilla de los Pajaritos en 1952: “Para hacer esta Iglesia hubo que vadear una gran zona. La gran zona era este interrogarse: ¿Cómo debe ser la forma dentro de la cual se ora?”.

“En la Iglesia unos se arrodillan, otros doblan una rodilla, otros apenas se inclinan, los últimos soportan de pie las campanillas de la consagración.

La Iglesia no es un estadio mirando a los atletas. Me sentía desnudo ante esta pregunta. Estaba extrañado de sentirme tan desnudo. Porque la ciudad se construye todos los días para el vivir de todos los días con los regalos que los grandes arquitectos nos han hecho”.

Y agrega: “Cuando volví, comprobé las iglesias actuales habituales de Chile. Son unos interiores vacíos rodeados, circundados de un complicado juego de motivos arquitectónicos, pilares, bóveda, molduras, luces, ventanales, casetones, cuadros, adornos, miles de otros detalles. Juego que puede ser simplificado, estilizado, modernizado como se dice corrientemente.

Y que estos interiores nada tienen que ver con lo que pretenden. Mejor es estar en ellos con ojos cerrados. Mirar las naves es casi igual a salir en el entreacto al foyer del teatro. Sus arquitectos no sabían, no saben cómo armar la arena del mar de la oración. No saben de la situación espacial. No saben de las circunstancias externas del hecho interno. ¿Hay menos hecho interno en los que sólo doblan una rodilla? Pensaba en los arquitectos góticos de Notre-Dame y me sentía más desnudo”.(4) Este ensayo busca abordar, desde la perspectiva que otorga el presente, cómo la definición de la arquitectura como “extensión orientada que da cabida” inaugura para ésta y la modernidad en América un nuevo modo de concebirse. Cada autor analiza uno de estos conceptos para expandirlos en su obra edificada, escrita y plástica.

Orientation is normally a reference in respect to the path of the sun; due to this, architectural plans state the relationship of the building in respect to the sun as information relevant and necessary for the comprehension of the project.

The “oriented” extension refers in this case to a greater complexity than to the normal dimensions of width/length of construction, and is introduced the concept of distance, which is embodied in architectural form as building a relationship between two limits: the form itself and its closure, and the meeting of this (form) with the distance that is not closure. Both limits are, by the way, in the scope of the visible thing. “The visible is not – we could say – onedimensional, but multidimensional. These are; one: that sees what surrounds us and leaves us inside, that sees what is before; another: Evokes the absent.

Whether it is to evoke in one’s past or future states; whether it evokes other things near and far, even the most distant”.(3) The oriented extension “that accommodates”, lastly, escapes the normal conception of the “isms” characteristic of modernity. Architecture is normally conceived as action that responds to determined problems with determined solutions. To accommodate, on the contrary, is the manifestation in space of a mode of inhabiting in permanence, that embraces life’s acts projecting them into a transcendence. This reality is formulated firstly in the project for the Chapel of Pajaritos in 1952: “In order to make this Church it was necessary to ford a great zone. The great zone to interrogate itself: How should the form be where one prays?”.

“In Church some kneel, others fold one leg, others barely incline forward, the last ones bare the bells of the consecration standing up. Church is not a stadium watching athletes. I would feel naked even before this question. It was strange to feel so naked. Because the city is built every day for everyday living with the gifts that great architects have given us”.

And adds: “When I returned, I checked the current usual Chilean churches. They are round empty interior spaces, surrounded by a complicated game of architectonic motifs, pillars, vaults, mouldings, lights, large windows, cases, pictures, adornments, thousands of other details. Game which can be simplified, stylized, modernized, as is currently said. And that these interiors have nothing to do with what they try. It’s best to be inside them with eyes shut. Looking at the church’s nave is almost the same as leaving a play in the middle of the spectacle into the foyer. Their architects did not know, do not know how to assemble the sand of the sea of the prayer. They do not know of spatial situations. They do not know of the external circumstances of the internal fact. Is there less internal doing in those that only fold a knee? I’d think of the gothic architects of Notre-Dame and I felt more naked”.(4) This essay attempts to engage, from the perspective that present time provides, how a definition of architecture as an “oriented extension that accommodates”, inaugurates for the present and for American modernity, a new way of project conception. Each author approaches one of these concepts to expand them in Alberto Cruz’ built, written and plastic work.

1. EXTENSIÓN: Obras Por Patricio Cáraves Silva Es de puño y letra de Alberto Cruz Covarrubias la afirmación siguiente: “La arquitectura es la extensión orientada que da cabida”.

Si partimos de esta afirmación, declarada en la exposición a propósito de los veinte años de la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, realizada en el Museo de Bellas Artes de Santiago en 1972, vemos que se desencadena un trabajo arquitectónico que se despliega abarcando. La invención de aunar vida, trabajo y estudio, convergencia que las potencia. Podemos ciertamente recorrer el trabajo arquitectónico de Cruz Covarrubias guiados y, aún más, iluminados por la afirmación antes enunciada.

También es pertinente traer una advertencia dicha por el arquitecto: “Un modo de pensar la extensión orientada que da cabida con la poesía. ¿Por qué así?

Porque la palabra es inaugural; lleva, da a luz, dice una “pietas” (Virgilio) o extensión.

Así, la piedad es también la extensión abierta para hacer nuestro mundo, excede toda desilusión o esperanza y forma nuestro arbitrio”.

Pero aún nos falta tener presente otra afirmación: “Afirmamos que la Arquitectura es un Arte.

Conviene enseguida subrayar dos características de la Arquitectura considerada como Arte y sus consecuencias inmediatas.

Una, es que ella da cabida y albergue a cualesquier oficio y artes humanos incluyendo al arquitecto. Otra, es que, simultáneamente con dar cabida, hace resplandecer en su obra la luz de ese coraje creador, propio de la condición humana”.

El conjunto de afirmaciones libremente expuestas en textos, conferencias, clases, exposiciones, que constituyen su fundamento arquitectónico, se puede palpar y ver en las obras construidas. En esta ocasión pensamos que basta con traer a presencia sólo tres, levantadas en los terrenos de

la Ciudad Abierta de Amereida, que también es su obra. Y, por ahora, sólo diremos que es el espacio abierto para dar hospitalidad.

Queremos destacar el modo plural que utiliza Alberto Cruz para exponer sus trabajos y afirmaciones. Es la forma de lo colectivo que ha sabido crear y que ha llamado “la ronda”. Así, su invención primera ha sido conformar lo que él denomina “el nosotros”, desde el primer día de la constitución del Instituto de Arquitectura de la Universidad Católica de Valparaíso hasta el día de hoy, atravesando casi seis décadas ininterrumpidamente.

Sala de Música, 1972 Ubicada en un meandro de la vega en la Ciudad Abierta de Ritoque, hoy es llamada Jardín de la Extensión, buscando refugio contra el ruido de la costa del Pacífico. Recinto edificado en un solo acto, en la premura, para cobijar en un interior la celebración de reunir en un quórum completo, que oye la música ejecutándose –música de vanguardia– como acto de gratuidad.

La arquitectura conforma una luz central por medio de una caja de luz –linterna–, protagonista del espacio. Es un interior despejado, enteramente de madera. A este espacio holgado, sin divisiones, se puede acceder por alguna de sus tres puertas. Cada una de ellas es un gabinete de penumbra, para así retener y demorar el paso de la luz violenta del exterior a la luz temperada del interior.

Recinto cerrado con muros –de membranas verticales, móviles– para temperarla acústicamente. Recinto a afinar según los requerimientos de cada vez. En este interior, cuando no está ejecutándose música, se da lugar a la mesa de todos, mesa fraterna del banquete. Mesa blanca, continua, de celebración, en común unidad, una vez por semana. Allí se recibe a los huéspedes previamente concertados, donde se les da la palabra con la que se ubican y miden.

By Patricio Cáraves Silva The following statement is from Alberto Cruz Covarrubias himself: “Architecture is the oriented extension that accommodates.”

If we begin with this statement, stated in the twenty year anniversary exhibition of the Architecture College of the Catholic University of Valparaíso (Universidad Católica de Valparaíso), carried out in Santiago’s Fine Arts Museum in 1972, we see that an architectonic work is triggered that unfolds inclusively. The invention to combine life, work and study, convergence that empowers. We can certainly review Cruz Covarrubias’ architectural work, guided and furthermore, illuminated by the before mentioned affirmation.

It is also relevant to include a warning made by the architect: “A way of thinking of the oriented extension that accommodates is with the poetry. How come? Because the word is inaugural; it takes, it gives light, says one “pietas” (Virgilio) or extension.

Thus, mercy is also the open extension to make our world, exceeds all disappointment and hope and forms our free will”.

But still another statement is missing: “We affirm that Architecture is an Art. But two features of architecture as an art and its immediate consequences should be immediately highlighted.

One is that it accommodates and shelters for any activity and craft, including the architect.

Another one is that simultaneously with accommodating, it enables to shine in his work, the light of that creative courage specific to the human condition”.

The set of statements freely exposed in texts, conferences, classes, exhibitions that constitute its architectural foundation, can be touched and seen in the built work. For now, we think that it is enough to refer to only three, located in the Amereida Open City, which is also his work. And for now, we will say that it is the open space that offers hospitality.

We’d like to highlight the plural tense that Alberto Cruz uses to expose his work and his statements. It is the form of the collective that he has known to create with, and which he called “the panel”. As such, his first invention was to establish what he denominated “the us”, from the very first day of the constitution of the Institute of Architecture of the Catholic University of Valparaíso and exist still today, embarking six decades uninterrupted.

Music Room, 1972 Located in a meander of the fertile valley of the Open City of Ritoque, today it is called the Garden of the Extension, seeking to be a refuge against the noise of

the Pacific coast. Enclosure built in haste in a single act, to shelter in its interior the celebration of uniting in a complete quorum, those who hear music being executing –vanguard music– as an act of gratitude.

Architecture conforms a central light by a light box –lantern– , protagonist of space. It is a clear interior, entirely out of wood. One can access this generous space with no divisions, by one of its three doors. Each door is a half-lit cabinet, so to retain and prolong the passage of the violent light from the exterior to the low light of the interior.

Enclosed space with walls –mobile vertical membrane– to acoustically temperate it. Adaptable enclosure to the requirements of each use. In this interior, when music is not being played, room is made for a table for everyone, the fraternal table of the banquet. White, continuous, a celebration table in common unit, once a week. There the guests previously arranged are received, where they hear about their location and the characteristics.

Hospederías del Banquete, de los Motores y Confín de Hospederías, 1973 Las Hospederías se gestaron en la Ciudad Abierta a partir de pensar la permanencia en los terrenos abiertos, de modo de sostener con la vida puesta allí el ejercicio de dar casa al estudio y al trabajo, para residir y recibir. Así, desde lo doméstico se sostiene lo público. Es por ello que en las Hospederías de la Ciudad Abierta los recintos dan cobijo y cuidan la relación de los espacios públicos e íntimos –que no privados– los que más bien dicen de propiedad y no de uso.

Las primeras Hospederías se construyeron llevando a cabo una experiencia: la de proyectar y ejecutar en simultaneidad. Con este modo de trabajo arquitectónico se fue consolidado el cuidado de las arenas. Mantenerlas inalteradas en su ser arenas, al interior del recinto. Es así como hoy día se las cuida y mantiene en su forma, las que marcando el perímetro hacen suelo, generando el distanciamiento de los cuerpos de los que habitan a los muros.

En este recinto que cuida de las arenas, se saluda y acoge al huésped, junto a la mesa, en un cálculo de los distanciamientos.

Esta Hospedería recoge el acto que le diera nombre. Acto del Banquete, mesa del escanciar el vino, siguiendo junto al comer, la lectura sin interrupción de la obra poética de Juan Larrea.

Es en este acto primero donde se reparó en el cielo como luz y en las arenas vivas.

Palacio del Alba y del Ocaso, 1982 Se ubica en la parte alta de los terrenos de la Ciudad Abierta, en los primeros faldeos de la cordillera de la Costa. Es una planicie de arcilla con una pendiente aproximada del 15%. Éste es un hecho de ubicación.

Arquitectónicamente es significativo por cuanto en él se realiza el estudio de construir unos elementos –zócalos–, cuyo valor radica en equiparar “las vistas”; así, tanto mirar hacia el mar como hacia el interior del continente sean suertes iguales.

Banquet Inn, of the Motors and Inn Confines, 1973 The Inns where developed in the Open City considering the permanence of the open lands, as a way to maintain the settled life and give housing to study and to work, to reside and to receive. As such, from the domestic the public is sustained. This is the reason why in the Inns of the Open City the rooms give shelter and take care of the relationship of the public and intimate spaces –which being not private– speak better of property than of use.

The first Inns were built carrying out an experiment: that of designing and executing simultaneously. With this mode of architectural work the care for the sand dunes was being consolidated. Keeping them unchanged in their sand being on the inside of the spaces. It is because of this that nowadays they are taken care of and maintain their shape, the ones which mark out the perimeter make up ground, generating the distancing of the bodies of those who inhabit the walls.

In this space which takes care of the sand, the guest is received and welcomed, at the table, in a calculation of distances.

This Inn embraces the act of shelter which gave its name. Banquet act, table of wine serving, eating following next, reading the poetic work of the Spaniard Juan Larrea without interruptions.

It is in this first act where it was repaired in the sky as light and in the alive sands.

Palace of Dawn and Twilight, 1982 It is located in the higher part of the Open City land, in the skirts of the Coastal hill range. It is a clay plane with an approximated slope of 15%. This is a location fact. Architecturally it is significant given that with this fact, a study is carried out of building some elements –bases– , whose value is to compare “the views”; so that looking to the sea or to the land are equal.

The assignment is made by the poet to the Works Studio of the Open City, being the second attempt to building a Palace. The initial programme is to give a home to four families and to a number of guests to be determined. It emerges from a poetic assignment that does not speak of four inns, but of the Palace of Dawn and Twilight.

Palacio del Alba y del Ocaso / Palace of Dawn and Twilight.

El encargo lo hace el poeta al Taller de Obras de la Ciudad Abierta, siendo el segundo intento de construir un Palacio. El programa inicial es para dar casa a cuatro familias y a un número a determinar de huéspedes.

Surge de un encargo poético que no habla de cuatro hospederías, sino de Palacio del Alba y del Ocaso. Ciertamente éstas son palabras poéticas que se oyen. La arquitectura que sí las oye debe trabajarlas, vaciarlas a vocablos para que no sean sólo fuente de iluminación, de inspiración, sino el fundamento de la obra. Es así.

La ronda de arquitectos en el Taller de Obras de la Ciudad Abierta sale, en acto de observación, tras estas voces de la poesía. Salir a observar dibujando, croquis y texto, la iluminación en el paso de la noche al día, allí donde ocurre el alba y la aurora, que abre el día a la mañana. Igual cosa con el ocaso, salir a observar al término de la jornada diaria, los últimos rayos que ocultándose colorean la atmósfera, atravesando la penumbra en el ocaso, los que dan paso a la noche. Alba y ocaso, a través de la observación, se los vio y nombró como lo “inequívoco”. Son los dos momentos del día cuando se sabe con precisión que en él se está; no ocurre así con momentos como la mañana y el mediodía o el atardecer, límites difusos que tienen, por así decirlo, un espesor. Lo inequívoco es ubicación delimitada, neta. Esta vez es la partida.

Ya nombrados los vocablos arquitectónicos que la fundamentan y orientan, el arquitecto que guía al Taller de Obras, Alberto Cruz C., ofrece un partido arquitectónico para proceder con la obra, consistente en el trazado de un recinto que contiene dos patios de 12 x 12 metros, vinculados por un tercero, de planta triangular. Adosado a éste y contiguo a una planta para futuras habitaciones. Todo ello, un esquema para ser trabajado en ronda.

Se decide construirlo en ladrillo fabricado in-situ. Se ha buscado vivir la experiencia de construir la obra partiendo desde la fabricación del material,

con la finalidad de ir elaborando palmo a palmo cada requerimiento. Junto a ella se levanta un chantier para habitarla desde la partida. No sólo se consultó a un ingeniero, sino que en ronda se le ofreció la obra para que inventara el cálculo estructural preciso, propio de ella. Habiendo oído el fundamento y estudiado el partido arquitectónico –lo inequívoco– él determinó los módulos curvos en planta: módulos de 2x2 m cimentados no en la tierra arcillosa del lugar, sino que aislados de ésta, flotantes sobre arena con pega de mortero pobre, de modo de equiparar la resistencia entre mortero y ladrillo en un cálculo de asismicidad y capaz de resistir un esfuerzo sísmico grado 6 a 7 en la escala de Richter.

Se construyeron las “machinas“ para edificar el escantillón de los murosmódulos, que forman el recinto de los dos patios cuadrados y del patio triangular. Los suelos se pavimentaron con ladrillos, siguiendo un trazado cuya generatriz es la diagonal del cuadrado y manteniendo una pendiente del 1%, para verter el agua lluvia a las canaletas de evacuación diseñadas según el cálculo hidráulico. Al ingeniero se le solicitó la condición de sequedad o de no-apozamientos.

Somos testigos de la invención que formulara Alberto Cruz y que llamó “la ronda”, que significa espaciar, para hacer lugar, ceder el paso para que quepa la intervención de varios. Y también, sostener la abertura creativa que funde en la voz del Arquitecto, que es el total. Esto, para proyectar y construir el espacio habitable vivo y palpitante de justa densidad y forma, dando cabida al acto de hospitalidad. Como también asistimos a la devoción de Alberto Cruz por la construcción del espacio en su tránsito a la forma. Así, no hay tramo insignificante, todo es obra. Ello, sólo posible en una total dedicación. Un trabajo realizado de igual modo como lo hiciera Antoni Gaudí, llevándose el catre a la obra.

Certainly these are poetic words to be heard. Architecture that hears them must work them, drain them into words so that they are not only light source of inspiration, but also the foundation of the work. It is like this.

The architect’s panel in the Works Studio of the Open City emerges, in the observation act, after these poetic words.

Go out to study by drawing, sketches and text, the lighting in the passage of night into day, there where dawn and aurora happens, which opens the day to the morning. Same thing happens at sunset; leave at the end of the day to observe the last rays that, in hiding themselves, colours the atmosphere, crossing the sunset’s half-light, those that take step in the night. Dawn and Twilight through observation were named as the “unequivocal”. They are the two moments in the day when it is precisely known if one is in them or not; it’s not like this in moments in the morning or at noon or at sunset, these are diffuse moments that have, so to speak, a thickness. The unequivocal is delimited location, net. This time it is the start.

Already named the architectural words that base and orient, the architect who guides the Projects Studio, Alberto Cruz C., offers an architectural scheme to carry out the work, consisting with the layout of an enclosure that contains two patios of 12 x 12 meters, connected to a third, of a triangle floor-plan. Attached to this, and contiguous to an area for future rooms. All of this being a scheme to be worked in “panel”.

It is decided to build with bricks fabricated on site. The objective was to experience the construction of the building starting with the fabrication of the material itself, with the aim of elaborating piece by piece each requirement.

Together to it a chantier is eructed to inhabit it from the very start. Not only was an engineer consulted, but also the building was offered in the panel so that a precise structural solution was invented specifically for it. Having heard the foundation and having studied the architectural scheme –the unequivocal– he determines curved modules in plan: modules of 2x2 m, cemented, not on the argillaceous earth of the location, but isolated from it, floating on sand with light density mortar, as a way to compare the resistance between mortar and brick in a seismic estimate, and capable of resisting a 6 to 7 Richter scale seismic movement.

The “machines” were built to construct the wall-modules units that form the enclosure of the two square patios and of the triangular patio. The floors are brick paved, following a layout whose generator is the diagonal of a square, and maintaining a 1% slope to guide rainwater into the channels according to the rainwater projects. The engineer was asked to provide dryness and no accumulation up of water.

We are witness of the invention that Alberto Cruz founded and called “the panel”, that means to make space, to make room, to yield so that the intervention of several minds fits. And also, maintain the creative opening that has its foundation on the voice of the Architect, which is the total. This is to design and construct the alive and beating habitable space of correct density and form, accommodating the hospitality act. As we also witness the devotion of Alberto Cruz for the construction of space in its transit to form. Thus, there is no insignificant section, everything is built work. This is only possible in total dedication. Work made similarly as Antoni Gaudí, who took the camping bed to the site.

2. ORIENTADA: Textos fundacionales Por David Jolly Monge

Se trata de ubicar primeramente la naturaleza de los textos del arquitecto Alberto Cruz Covarrubias. Nos referiremos solamente a tres de ellos, mostrando el sentido inaugural que aparecerá a lo largo de este escrito.

Se trata de una construcción nueva en nuestro país y aún en nuestro continente. Son, por tanto, textos fundacionales, que abren a una nueva realidad en el oficio de la arquitectura, el urbanismo y junto a una relación con la poesía.

It is sought to primarily locate the nature of the texts of the architect Alberto Cruz Covarrubias. We’ll refer to only three of them, showing the inaugural sense that will appear during this essay.

It is about a new construction in our country and furthermore, in the continent.

They are thus, foundational texts, that open up to a new reality in architecture and urbanism professions, together with a relationship with poetry.

Proyecto para una capilla en el Fundo Los Pajaritos, 1952 Se trata del fundamento, es decir, de un discurso teórico que presenta el desarrollo creativo de una obra de arquitectura que quiere plantearse su no-más-atrás, su origen. Aquello más atrás de lo cual no se puede indagar, para hacer surgir una obra de arquitectura. Aquí el arquitecto declara su hallazgo que es el acto. El acto de habitar de la condición humana, esa vez en la oración.

Junto al hallazgo del acto muestra cómo llega a él, contemplando la vida de la ciudad, la concreta vida de todos los días y de su acontecer extraordinario, todo esto en relación con el espacio donde ésta acontece.

Así, este discurso a muy poco andar ya ha inaugurado dos nuevas realidades originales acaecidas en Chile en el año 1952: una arquitectura que nace con un discurso que la fundamenta y un modo artístico que permite develar la realidad desde el hecho mismo de habitar la ciudad, de estar en el mundo.

El desarrollo del texto y proyecto de la Capilla de los Pajaritos tiene una tercera dimensión, y es que se exige en el paso a la forma de esta extensión habitable que acogerá el acto de la oración, esto es, la fidelidad a lo observado. La forma no es un resultado mecánico ni menos automático, es fruto de una disputa que requiere ser sostenida por el oficiante.

Con este texto se produce un cambio radical en la arquitectura de nuestro país, que podemos graficar de la siguiente manera: si hasta antes de la Capilla de los Pajaritos la arquitectura fue pensada como la construcción de cuerpos, útiles, bellos y firmes en la tradición de Vitruvio, Alberto Cruz inaugura con este proyecto el vacío habitable. La arquitectura del acto concibe unos límites que cualifican un vacío que le da cabida a la plenitud del habitar humano en su acontecer diario y extraordinario.

2. ORIENTED: Foundational texts

Project for a chapel in the Pajaritos Farm, 1952 It is about the foundation, in other words, of a theoretical discourse that presents the creative development of an architectural work that wants to state its origin.

That which behind it, cannot be investigated, to make an architectural piece arise. Here the architect declares his finding which is the act. The condition of the human act of inhabiting, this time in the prayer.

Together with the discovery of the act, it shows how it reaches it, contemplating city life, real everyday life and its extraordinary happenings, all this in relation to the space where it occurs.

Thus, this discourse had in little time, inaugurated two new original realities occurring in Chile in 1952: an architecture that is born with a discourse that bases it, and an artistic way that allows in revealing the reality from the fact itself of inhabiting the city, to be in the world.

The development of the text and the project of the Chapel of Pajaritos (little birds) has a third dimension, which is that, in the passage to form, it is required of this habitable extension to shelter the prayer act, this is the fidelity to the observed. The form is not a mechanical, nor an automatic result, it is a product of a dispute that requires to be sustained by the officer.

With this text a radical change is produced in the architecture of our country, that we can graphically explain as follows: if until the Chapel of Pajaritos architecture was thought as the construction of bodies, useful, beautiful and firm in the Vitruvian tradition, Alberto Cruz inaugurates with this project the habitable vacuum. Architecture of the act conceives limits that qualify an emptiness that accommodates the fulfilment of the human habitation in its daily and extraordinary occurrence.

Con ocasión de un proyecto de urbanización para Viña del Mar, en este texto se plantea la realidad primera de la ciudad. Así el arquitecto analiza lo que acontece con la ciudad en el presente y verifica en los hechos argumentables y dibujables lo que le concierne a la vida de la ciudad y sus habitantes, desde este modo que constata lo que ocurre ante los ojos y mente del arquitecto.

Ante las necesidades y ofrecimientos de la vida urbana contemporánea, que de suyo no tienen medida, el arquitecto-urbanista se pregunta por aquello que es el origen de las respuestas a las necesidades, aquello anterior que las sustenta y puede ordenarlas.

Surge en la argumentación una orientación primera: la ciudad ha de responder a su “destino”. Es poseedora de un destino que la hace ciudad y la constituye como tal. En el caso de Valparaíso se trata del mar, el puerto se constituye en ciudad para que el país tenga mar. Es el arquitecto quien debe volcar al espacio el destino de la ciudad, se afirma ahí “…sea éste heroico o no…”. De este modo, un proyecto revela la orientación del urbanismo de toda la ciudad de Valparaíso, planteando su relación con la orilla, la importancia metafísica del encuentro del agua con la tierra.

Asimismo aborda el orden espacial de la ciudad en sus cerros. Esta proposición nuevamente toca la dimensión de la fidelidad, proponiendo sostener el punto de vista más allá de las circunstancias, “…jamás el destino traicionado…”, y llega hasta sostener que la mínima energía o capacidad de obra puede testimoniar esta fidelidad al destino.

On occasion of an urbanism project for Viña del Mar, in this text it is proposed the first reality of the city. As such, the architect analyses what occurs with the city in present time, and verifies in the arguable and drawable facts what concerns to the life of the city and of its inhabitants, from this mode he takes notes of what happens in the eyes and mind of the architect.

Before the necessities and offers of contemporary urban life, which of belonging has no measure, the architect-urbanist asks what is the origin of the answers to his needs, those which proceeds and which sustains them and can be arranged.

Emerges in the discussion a first orientation: the city has to respond to its “destinations”. It’s possessive of a destiny that makes it a city and which constitutes it as such. In the case of Valparaíso it is about the sea, the port is constituted into city so that the country has the sea. It is the architect who has to turn to space the destination of the city, “be it heroic or not ... “. In this way, a project reveals the urbanism orientation of the entire city of Valparaiso, proposing its relationship with the edge, the metaphysical importance of the encounter of earth with water. As well, it approaches the spatial order of the city in its hills. This proposal once again touches the dimension of fidelity, proposing to maintain the point of view beyond the circumstances, “…never destiny betrayed…”, and arrives until maintaining that the minimum energy or capacity of the project can attest to this fidelity towards destiny.

“(...) the improvisation of the worker. Then the city-planner and the one who loves space and the city, and comprehends the spatial manifestation of life in the city. Does not faint and heads to the Achupallas hills and to the master they say: Worker, please place here the square / Worker, please lengthen your street this way / Worker, please widen just a little bit this avenue.

Destiny never betrayed.”

Amereida, 1975 Amereida es una obra poética colectiva que se plasmó en el elan creativo del poeta Godofredo Iommi Marini, obra que cuenta con la participación de Alberto Cruz aunque la primera edición no certifica ninguna autoría, ni siquiera la propia de Godofredo Iommi. Aun así se sabe quiénes son los autores de muchos de sus fragmentos.

Quiero traer a presencia una dimensión capital en esta obra que pretende el más alto nivel poético, el de la épica, en cuanto a develar una posible realidad para el continente sudamericano.

Para esto debemos detenernos brevemente a oír lo que la obra misma nos plantea.

Amereida es un texto poético construido en la herencia de la modernidad que abriera el poeta Stephan Mallarmé con su Golpe de Dados, en el cual el blanco de la página es un soporte actuante en el poema.

Amereida está concebido en este blanco actuante, por lo que no tiene signos de puntuación y el blanco de la página es el que otorga los silencios que suplen eficientemente a los signos tradicionales.

A continuación tenemos un hecho fundamental, junto a las reveladoras palabras que constituyen el poema aparecen unos mapas. Estos mapas no son las habituales ilustraciones que acompañan a las ediciones de lujo que no forman parte del poema propiamente tal. Estos mapas, realizados por Alberto Cruz, son parte constituyente del poema.

Vamos a demorarnos en el primero de ellos, porque nos parece que inaugura una época distinta para América del Sur y después de su construcción ha tenido consecuencias que persisten en el tiempo porque constituyen una abertura inaugural.

El plano en cuestión es el primero que aparece en Amereida. Se trata de un plano del continente americano especialmente dibujado para la ocasión; consiste en el contorno del continente, la línea que separa el agua de la tierra y luego el plano se extiende hacia los perímetros de la hoja trazando las profundidades del fondo marino que rodea a la masa continental. De este modo el continente aparece por lo no dibujado de él.

Este plano nos permite leer varias dimensiones, que son traídas a presencia.

Primero se trata de un plano cartográfico, es el exacto continente, ni una

expresión ni una alegoría continental. No es una América que se encuentra en el corazón o mente del poeta. Por lo tanto la América poética es el concreto continente habitado por los americanos.

La siguiente y más importante construcción que hace este plano es la entrada del continente sudamericano en el blanco poético de la página.

Se trata de la contribución arquitectónica en el poema de Amereida que hace entrar la sola extensión del continente en el blanco que sustenta a la poesía hasta hoy.

Esta inauguración del continente americano como materia poética tiene lugar en ese instante, y no ha dejado de ser objeto de la construcción de la Escuela de Arquitectura y Diseño de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso desde entonces hasta el presente, permitiendo la fundación de la Ciudad Abierta y la realización de Travesías ininterrumpidamente desde el año 1984. Constituye así una abertura permanente en la posibilidad de concebir una construcción americana sin exclusiones ni nostalgias, donde el presente se manifiesta como un don.

El presente texto no pretende abarcar toda la obra escrita de Alberto Cruz, solo ha tomado tres de ellos para mostrar su ubicación, para hacer aparecer lo que ella le ha traído al país abriendo un nuevo horizonte creativo en la arquitectura, el urbanismo y las artes en la posible destinación del continente americano.

Todo este discurso se asienta sobre otra construcción que va más allá del texto y que tiene la misma contextura en cuanto a ser una abertura original llevada a cabo por Alberto Cruz: se trata de la relación poesía y arquitectura. No se trata de la normal interpretación que un oficiante realiza de un texto poético que lo inspira o que le cae como culminación de una realización. Ésta es una relación con la palabra en cuanto ser palabra –la poesía–, oída por el oficio de la arquitectura en su partida como un desconocido. Este oír es un dar cabida que para ser tal pide de un pueblo de arquitectos, decir de una destinación a tal abertura.

Desde sus textos y en la construcción de vida trabajo y estudio, Alberto Cruz ha construido una abertura creativa que funda en América una posibilidad de mundo.

Amereida, 1975 Amereida is a poetic collective creation which was shaped in the creative style of the poet Godofredo Iommi Marini, work that has the participation of Alberto Cruz although the first edition does not certify any authorship, not even Godofredo Iommi’s own. Even so it is known who are the authors of many of its fragments.

I would like to bring a capital dimension to this work which aims to the highest poetic level, that of the epic, as to reveal a possible reality for the South American continent.

For this we must stop briefly to hear what the work itself proposes to us.

Amereida is a poetic text constructed in the inheritance of the modernity enabled by the poet Stephan Mallarmé with his Golpe de Dados, in which the white of the page is a supporting actor in the poem.

Amereida is conceived in this acting white, thus it has no punctuation marks and the white of the page is what grants the silences that effectively supplement the traditional signs.

Continuing, we have a fundamental feat, together with the revealing words that constitute the poem some maps appear. These maps are not the usual illustrations that accompany the luxury editions that are not part of the poem as such. These maps, done by Alberto Cruz, are a constituent part of the poem.

We are going to take our time in the first of them, given that it seems to us that it inaugurates a different period for South America and after its construction it has had consequences that persists in time since they constitute an inaugural opening.

The plane in question is the first that appears in Amereida. It refers to a plane in the American continent specially drawn for the occasion; consists in the contours of the continent, in the line that separates the water from the earth and next, the plane extends towards the perimeter of the page tracing the depths of the seabed surrounding the continental mass. Thus the continent appears by what is not drawn.

This plane allows us to capture various dimensions, which are all revealed.

First it is a cartographic plan, it is the exact continent, not an expression nor a continental allegory. It is not an America that is located in the heart or mind of the poet. Thus, the poetic America is the concrete continent inhabited by the Americans.

The following and more important construction that this plane does is the entrance of the South American continent in the poetic whiteness of the page.

It refers to the architectural contribution in the Amereida poem that makes the entry possible of just the extension of the continent in the whiteness that sustains poetry until today.

This inauguration of the American continent as poetic material has place in that instant, and has not stopped being object of the construction of the College of Architecture and Design of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso until present day, enabling the foundation of the Open City and the realization of Passages without interruptions since 1984. As such it constitutes a permanent opening in the possibility of conceiving an American construction without exclusions or nostalgia, which the present is manifested as a gift.

This text does not attempt to embrace all of Alberto Cruz’s written work, it has only taken three of them to demonstrate its direction, to reveal what it has brought to the country, which is the opening to a new creative horizon in architecture, urbanism and in the arts in the possible destination of the American continent.

This whole discourse grounds on another construction that goes further than text and that has the same context in terms of being an original opening guide

by Alberto Cruz: it refers to the relationship between poetry and architecture. It is not about the normal interpretation that a reader carries out on a poetic text that inspires him or that makes sense as the culmination of an understanding.

This is a relationship with the word in terms of being a word –the poem– heard by the profession of architecture at the start as unknown. This hearing is to be accommodating, which to be so requires of all the architects, go from a destination to such an opening.

From his texts and from the construction of his work and study life, Alberto Cruz has built a creative opening that grants on America a possibility of the world.

3. QUE DA CABIDA Por Tomás Browne Covarrubias Nota: Trataré de hablar a través de los textos de Alberto Cruz C.,establecer los vínculos mínimos y necesarios con el propósito de articular en un presente la palabra dicha.

“El hombre habita a partir de lo templado. La mujer que elige el vestido que ha de ponerse. Distanciamiento. No las vestimentas que sacan de la nieve o de las arenas al sol”. “Arquitectura; la forma de lo templado. Dicho acto se da en el espacio no homogéneo (o borde) que es lo contrario a la ganancia; por eso –No– al urbanismo de la planificación”.(5) Concebir la arquitectura como un “dar cabida” plantea un giro radical respecto de la propuesta del movimiento moderno y los denominados funcionalismos. En éstos la arquitectura es entendida como un conjunto de necesidades y requerimientos objetivos que tienen la potencia necesaria de “in-formar” la obra de arquitectura. Así, por ejemplo, la relación entre “forma y función” definida por Mies van der Rohe o la relación “entre los espacios servidos y servidores” en Louis Kahn.

A diferencia de las proposiciones anteriores, “dar cabida” concierne al habitar del hombre que lo hace en permanencia. Permaneciendo el hombre expresa su condición de habitante; con los actos propios e irreductibles de éste vinculados al tiempo y lugar, a su habitar; lo que marca una temporalidad implícita a su quehacer. Dar cabida, nos parece, es manifestación de un don primero que señala la condición creativa del hombre.

En los pizarrones 2 al 8 de la exposición que celebraba los veinte años de la Escuela de Arquitectura de la UCV en el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes se decía: “Un modo de pensar la extensión orientada que da cabida Arquitectura co-generada con la Poesía. ¿Por qué así?

Porque la palabra es inaugural, lleva, da a luz, dice una «pietas» (Virgilio) o extensión.

«Así la piedad, que es también la extensión abierta para hacer nuestro mundo, excede toda desilusión o esperanza y forma nuestro arbitrio».

De no ser así, si arquitectura es hacer: Casas lujosas, míseras, altas, bajas, edificios públicos, hospitales, calles, puentes, jardines, caminos, etc., todo con estilos modernos, semi-modernos, antiguos, con aire de aeropuertos, salas de conferencias, etc. ¿Qué diferencia habría entre arquitecto y un ingeniero o constructor o carpintero o buen albañil? Ninguna. A no ser que el arquitecto sea un «decorador de interiores o exteriores» etc. En tal caso está de más.

Pero el hombre es impensable sin palabra y sin posición. (Mudo sordo, ciego, cerebro solo, tendría posición y palabra –sabe Dios cuál– pero la tendría.)

El coraje de la condición humana, al que también llamaremos virtud, surge necesariamente.

Sus apariciones abren un campo del cual se configuran los oficios y las artes humanos.

Es el modo, tal vez, como el hombre reconoce que algo es una inclemencia ante la que debe responder.

3. THAT ACCOMODATES

Note: I will attempt to speak through Alberto Cruz’ texts, establishing minimum but necessary links with the aim of articulating the stated words in present time.

“Men inhabits as from the temperate. The woman who chooses the dress that must be worn. Distancing. Not the outfits that come from the snow or from the sand to the sun”. “Architecture, the form of the temperate. Mentioned act happens in the not homogenous space (or border) which is the contrary to gain; as such –No– to the urbanism of planning”.(5) Conceiving architecture as an “accommodation” proposes a radical change with regards to the modern movement’s proposition and the denominated functionalisms. In these architecture is understood as a set of needs and objective requirements that have the necessary potential of “in-forming” the architecture project. As such, for example, the relationship between “form and function” as defined by Mies van der Rohe or the relationship “between the service and served spaces” in Louis Kahn.

Different to the before mentioned proposals, “to accommodate” concerns the inhabiting of men, which is permanent. Men remaining at a place, expresses his condition of inhabitant; with his own and irreducible acts it relates to time and place, to his act of inhabiting; that marks an implicit temporality to his day to day. Accommodate, it seems, is a manifestation of an ability that first points out to the human creative condition.

The 2nd to the 8th display of the exposition that celebrated the twenty years of the College of Architecture of UCV in the Fine Arts National Museum stated: “A way of thinking the oriented extension that accommodates Architecture co-generated with Poetry.

Why? Because word is inaugural, it takes, gives light, says «pietas» (Virgilio) or extension.

«As such mercy, which is also the open extension to do our world, exceeds all disillusion or hope and forms our discretion». (Ode to K).

How can it not be, if architecture is to do: Luxury, miserable, high, low houses, public buildings, hospitals, roads, bridges, gardens, roads, etc.., all with modern, semi-modern, ancient styles, with air of airports, conference rooms, etc.

What difference is there between an architect and an engineer or builder or carpenter or good mason? None. Unless the architect is an “interior and exterior decorator “. In which case he is expendable .

But men is unthinkable without word and without position. (Dumb deaf, blind person, single brain, would have position and word – God knows which - but would have it.)

Position and Word. Architecture and Poetry.

The courage in human condition, which we will also call virtue, appears necessarily.

Their appearances open a field in which human offices and arts are formed.

This is the way, perhaps, as men recognizes that something is an inclemency before which he must respond.

For example: in a cold place people walk barefoot. There, white signifies mourning and here it is black. Over there, there was or there is polygamy, there was or there is monogamy, etc.

These are not better than others. They are different and configure themselves in those ways, according to the field opened by courage or virtue of the human condition.

Por ejemplo: en un lugar helado se anda a pie pelado. Allá el color blanco significa luto y aquí lo significa el negro. Allá hubo o hay poligamia, aquí hubo o hay monogamia, etc.

No son estas cosas unas mejores que otras. Son distintas y se conforman de esos modos, según sea el campo abierto por el coraje o virtud de la condición humana.

Pero conviene enseguida subrayar dos características de la Arquitectura considerada como Arte y sus consecuencias inmediatas.

Una, es que ella da cabida y albergue a cualesquier oficio y artes humanos incluyendo al arquitecto.

Otra es que, simultáneamente con dar cabida, hace resplandecer en su obra la luz de ese coraje creador propio de la condición humana.

Por la primera característica que le es peculiar –dar lugar y posición a los oficios, sean los que fueren– la arquitectura muestra, de suyo, el campo, la apertura donde aquellos son posibles.Por eso ella es abierta, abriente y pública. Por la segunda característica –hacer resplandecer la virtud creadora– ella nunca puede ser suplida por sumas o conglomerados de oficios más o menos bien ordenados, puestos bajo techo, standards, etc.

Sean «estéticos» o no.

Sin embargo es evidente que no siempre hay arquitectura. Por el contrario, es escasa. ¿Por qué? Porque también lo propio de la condición humana es ser libre.

La virtud creadora surge, abre un campo y despliega un «tiempo» cada vez en cada obra”. 6) Un rastro para hacer visible en este ensayo y apreciar cómo se manifiesta el “dar cabida” en la propia obra de Alberto Cruz es recurriendo a sus cuadernos personales de observaciones y dibujos, los que constituyen un corpus gráfico unitario aunque diverso en temática.

Estos cuadernos llamados por él ‘carpetas’ –en su mayoría hechos con papeles de desecho, sobres ya usados, papel de envoltorios, etc, muchos de ellos en un formato pequeño que cabe en el bolsillo de la chaqueta–, lo acompañan diariamente y a todas partes. Están a la mano para dibujar en todo momento, durante todo el día y parte de la noche.

Podemos decir que se trata de un estado, el de la contemplación, que se lleva a cabo en medio de la vida diaria, no como interrupción de ésta sino como configuración de un ritmo creativo. Este constante dibujar es dedicado y cuidado, de manera que lo fijado a través suyo permanezca en su originalidad. Más que una “expresión del artista” es una “forma de aquello que es”, que lo da a ver con su maestría del dibujo.

En muchos de estos dibujos contemplativos se puede reparar que existe una construcción del blanco de la página; los trazos dibujados ponen en valor el blanco de la hoja. Esto tiene su correlato con la concepción de la arquitectura como el vacío que da cabida.

De este modo se lleva a cabo una contemplación en el presente, contemplación activa, que avanza hacia lo que mira de un modo constructivo. Veamos: “El dibujo de por sí elige entre lo múltiple. De allí que da cuenta de un exterior que rodea a un conocimiento que solo se identifica en cuanto no es ya otro. Pero la creatividad siempre yace a la espera de un rayo. Que no deja ir en ese paso a paso. Rayo que puede ser en zigzag, que reafirma a sí mismo, o con rayo doble, pues va y vuelve. Rayos que son secantes iguales para el círculo o distintas para el cuadrado. Y la creatividad piensa en lo ilimitado, en que el cuadrado y el círculo conforman una figura única, en que las secantes cuadradas y circulares sean las mismas. Entonces no a ello, a un tal ilimitado. El oficio es en lo limitado”.(7)

But two features of architecture as an art and its immediate consequences should be immediately highlighted.

One is that it accommodates and shelters for any activity and craft, including the architect.

Another one is that simultaneously with accommodating, it enables to shine in his work the light of that creative courage specific to the human condition.

With the first characteristic that is peculiar to it –giving place and position to all activities, be them what they be– architecture itself shows the field and aperture where they are possible. That is why it is open, operable and public.

With the second characteristic –to shine the creative virtue– it never can be replaced by sum or conglomerates of ordered, more or less well put offices under ceiling, standards, etc. Be «aesthetic» or not.

However, it is evident that there is not always architecture. On the contrary, it is scarce. Why? Because also true to human condition is to be free.

The creative virtue emerges, opens a field and unfolds a «time» every time in every project”. (6) A help to make this essay visible and to appreciate how “to accommodate” in the Alberto Cruz’s own work, is to resort to his personal observations and drawings notebooks which constitute a unique graphical corpus, although diverse in themes.

These notebooks named by him as ‘folders’ –in its majority done with remainder papers, already used papers, wrappers, etc, many of them small sized so that they fit into jacket pockets–, accompany him everyday and to all parts. They are handy to draw on at any moment, throughout the day and part of the night.

We can say that it is about a state, of contemplation, that occurs in the middle of daily life, not as interruptions of it, but as configuration of a creative rhythm.

This constant drawing is dedicated and careful, in a way that what is set through it remains in its originality. More than an “expression of the artist” it is a “form of what is”, that reveals with his mastery of drawing.

In many of these contemplative drawings it can be noticed that there exists a construction of the white of the page; the lines drawn place value on the whiteness of the paper. This has a correlation with the conception of architecture as the void that accommodates.

In this way a contemplation in present time is carried out, active contemplation, that advances towards its object in a constructive manner. Let us see: “Drawing in itself chooses between the multiple. From there it gives account of an exterior that surrounds a knowledge that only identifies as soon as it is not already another one. But the creativity always lays waiting for a ray.

That does not allow advancing step by step. Rays that can be in zigzag, that reaffirms itself, or a double ray, since it goes and comes back. Rays which are as drying to the circle or different to the square. And the creativity thinks in the unlimited, in that the square and the circle confirm an unique figure, in that the

square and circular are the same. Then not to it, but to a limitless one. The chore is in the limited”. .(7) The drawing and the spelling, hands that draws and writes as singular “hairy line” –illusion to the irregular trace– , modestly constructing bit by bit, unites in synthesis the urban internal creative and peculiar requirement of architecture, which is to house. The plastic, can be affirmed, is the way of the detention, which retains not as profit of something but as loosening. For that reason it accommodates. Thus: “A time in which one inhabits in current time. One which is construction and exhibition without expression. In which fatigue is expressed –so to speak. That of time of its guard. Such sign– then. The construction contracts in components.

Take the long quantum of observations and drawings notebooks accumulated and done by hand, but hardly recognizable. Then slightly touch up that this or that. A rocking - probable. It is pure voluptuous. It is the eccentric voluptuous of the architectural thought”. (8) The unpublished graphic and written work by Alberto Cruz C. allows one to measure its consistency, significance and breadth. It is composed of Collections, each one divided into series, and in some case into sub-series, and unites some 2000 volumes, number which does not include –since they are not notebooks– the “Large Format Series”, of the Drawing Collections; the Correspondence Collections, and the Historical Extracts Collections.

“Un tiempo cual en que se habita en la actualidad. Uno que es una construcción y exposición sin expresión. En que expresan –por así decirlo– la fatiga. Aquella del tiempo de su guardia. Tal signo – entonces.

La construcción se contracta en componentes. Tomar el largo quántum de los cuadernos de observaciones y dibujos acumulados, a la mano, pero difícilmente reconocibles. Entonces ponerse a retocar leve, brevemente éste o aquél. Un oscilar –acaso. Son la pura volupta. Es la volupta excéntrica, del pensar arquitectónico”.(8) El archivo inédito de la obra gráfica y escrita de Alberto Cruz C. permite dimensionar su consistencia, peso y envergadura. Caemos en la cuenta –nos parece al concluir– que la obra gráfica reunida en los cuadernos de Alberto Cruz y que ahora dan cuenta de este “dar cabida” no es sino lo que él llama “ofrenda” o “acto reverente”. “La ofrenda, se encuentra con el acto de habitar: lo podemos observar en la iglesia, cuando avanzamos hacia el altar, en que nuestros pasos se van volviendo cada vez más leves, cual si -se pudiera decir- avanzamos sin andar. A esta observación, la hemos llamado el acto reverente. Este acto no sólo se da en la iglesia, ante la lámpara del Santísimo, sino que sale a la ciudad, a la vida diaria con sus trabajos y con sus descansos allá en la playa de las vacaciones, es que doquier el hombre se encuentra a sí mismo como un donado en gratitud con el Donador, en la responsabilidad de una misión. En los arquitectos ésta, la de un acto que se conforma dentro de sí mismo en un acto reverente, en que lo reverente es lo más alto del habitar- lo que va en peregrinación hacia lo definitivo, con todos, los donados”.(10)

As concluding we realize that the graphic work united in Albert Cruz’s and which now portrays this “accommodation” is nothing else of what he calls “offering” or “reverent act”. “The offering, is found in the habitation act: we can observe it in church, when we advance towards the altar, our steps become lighter each time, which –if it can be said– we advance without swimming. This observation we have called the reverent act. This act not only occurs in church, before the Saint, but also comes out in the city, on the worker’s daily life and on their breaks on the beach during the holidays, because anywhere the men finds himself like a donated in gratitude with the Donor, in the responsibility of a mission. It is up to architects, the one act that conforms within itself of an reverent act, in which the reverent is the highest habitability - which goes in peregrination towards the definitive thing, with all the donated ones”.(10)

En la ribera norte del Lago Ranco, Bahía Coique, en un claro en el bosque donde se produce una planicie antes de caer al lago, la casa se instala semienterrándose, prolongando el potrero existente y elevándose suavemente hasta alcanzar la copa de los árboles frente a la playa.

In the north bank of the Ranco Lake, in Coique Bay, in an opening in the forest where there is a plateau before falling to the lake, the house is installed semi-buried, prolonging the existing field, and softly elevating itself until reaching the crown of the trees in front of the beach.

Como surcos en la tierra, una serie de ‘tajos’ permiten recibir el sol del norte, cada uno con su propio carácter: comedor profundo; cocina acotada; acceso largo; dormitorios medidos. La plantación irrumpe diferenciándolos.

La planta se quiebra al centro, un pequeño gesto como para ir a envolver los árboles…

Una pasarela elevada de madera, como un muelle por sobre los pastos, se introduce en el tajo del acceso, que gradualmente parece ir enterrándose, el paisaje desaparece.

Enterrar, encerrar, esconder, luego traspasar y abrirse en medio del bosque.

As scores in the ground, a series of ‘cuts’ allow the northern sun to be received, each with its own character: deep dining room, bounded kitchen, long access, measured bedrooms. The plantation bursts differentiating them.

The floor-plan breaks in the centre, a small gesture to surround the trees…

An elevated wooden footbridge, similar to a pier over the grass, is introduced in the edge of the access, which gradually seems to be buried, the landscape disappears.

To bury, to lock up, to hide, then to transfer and open itself in the middle of the forest.

El encargo de la viña fue el diseño de una Sala de Degustaciones con una infraestructura capaz de revelar al visitante la geografía y características propias de los viñedos del Fundo San Rafael, en las proximidades de Talca.

The winery’s assignment was the design of a tasting room with an infrastructure capable of revealing to the visitor the geography and specific characteristics of the vineyards in the San Rafael Farm, near Talca.

El nuevo espacio debía descubrir los secretos propios de esta tierra y su naturaleza. Un espacio de retiro contemplativo elegido para la degustación de sus vinos desligado del quehacer propio de las bodegas.

El emplazamiento se definió en la mayor de tres lagunas existentes dentro de un campo que posee más de 1.500 ha, enmarcada por un bosque nativo y con vista al volcán Descabezado, los viñedos y un paisaje exuberante.

Para preservar la naturaleza intacta y extremar el contacto con la laguna se definió que la Sala debía ‘flotar’ en ella al igual que las terrazas, ubicando la nave de servicios sobre la tierra al igual que las naves de acceso con la forma de una cruz girada en la orilla de contacto con el agua.

The new space had to discover the specific secrets of this earth and its nature. A meditation space chosen for the tasting of its wines, separated from the day to day of the warehouse.

The placement was defined in the largest of the three existing lagoons inside a field of more than 1.500 ha, framed by a native forest and with views to the Descabezado Volcano, to the vineyards and to an exuberant landscape.

In order to preserve nature, and to make the contact with the lagoon more extreme, it was decided that the Tasting room should “float” similar to the terraces, locating the service nave on ground, as well as the access nave in the form of a cross turned in the border of the water.

La estructura principal es de vigas IN de acero, las cuales que conforman la nave, quedando la Sala de Degustación en volado de 15,5 m completamente suspendida sobre el agua. Este espacio cuelga mediante tensores de la estructura metálica, con parámetros acristalados que integran perfectamente al visitante con toda la naturaleza del lugar.

Para los recubrimientos y terrazas se utilizaron roble viejo de demolición aserrado y durmientes de roble natural.

El paisajismo y recuperación del borde de la laguna irá sumergiendo poco a poco las instalaciones en tierra, dejando que las salas y sus áreas de terraza emerjan libremente sobre el agua y el paisaje.

The main structure forming the nave are steel “IN” beams, with the Tasting Room in a 15.5m cantilever completely suspended over the water. This space hangs by means of tensors from the metal structure, with glazed parameters that integrate the visitor perfectly with the entire nature of the place. Aged oak of sawed demolitions and sleepers of natural oak were used for the coverings and terraces.

The landscaping and recovery of the lagoon’s edge will little by little submerge the facilities on earth, leaving the rooms and its terraces to freely emerge over the water and the landscape.

The building is arranged as a clear and responsive piece with its context, generating a volume that opens towards the community and to its immediate surroundings –the church and the San Alberto Plaza–, in Recoleta. This formal order enables an integration between the new and the existing, and a constant interchange between the community and its Council building.

Emplazado en el corazón de la comuna de Recoleta, el nuevo edificio Consistorial, en conjunto con la Plaza San Alberto, configuran el nuevo centro cívico y social para la comuna.

Esta obra, inaugurada a fines de 2010, es el resultado de un concurso de arquitectura realizado el año 2006.

Uno de los puntos determinantes en el diseño fue la idea de generar un gran espacio cívico, que se prolongara como una faja desde el centro del Consistorial hacia el atrio de la iglesia, a modo de circulación en caso de festividades o como espacio público en días hábiles.

Esta gran explanada pública se logró ubicando las áreas de mayor afluencia de público en torno a una plaza dura, un piso bajo la cota de la calle. A este espacio se accede a través de una escalera-gradería, la cual alberga un pimiento plantado en el lugar hace más 200 años.

Esta plaza fue concebida como el centro de reuniones masivas de la comuna y se completará una vez que se ejecute la remodelación a la Plaza San Alberto, en una etapa posterior.

Situated in the heart of the neighbourhood of Recoleta, the new Council building, in conjunction with the San Alberto Plaza, make up the new civic and social centre for the neighbourhood.

This project, inaugurated at the end of 2010, is the result of an architecture competition carried out in 2006.

One of the determining points in the design was the idea to generate a great civic space that could extend as a band from the centre of the Council building towards the Church’s atrium, by way of circulation in festivities or as public space during the week.

This great public esplanade was achieved locating the areas with more public assistance around a hard-paved plaza on one floor level below the street. This space is reached by a stair-seating, which holds a pepper tree planted more that 200 years ago.

This plaza was conceived as the massive meeting centre of the neighbourhood and will be completed once the remodel of the San Alberto Plaza is done in a later stage.

De hormigón arquitectónico y cristal en su gran mayoría, el edificio genera una total transparencia de su programa y actividades hacia su espacio central y a la comunidad.

Las fachadas norte y oriente, que miran hacia la avenida Recoleta, están revestidas por una tela de acero como segunda piel, a modo de reflectar la radiación directa en verano, mejorando la calidad de los espacios de trabajo.

Este juego de materialidades confiere al conjunto una sugerente notoriedad, basada en transparencias y reflejos.

Pocos materiales y simpleza volumétrica se combinan en un edificio de expresión austera y gran dignidad espacial.

In mainly architectural concrete and glazing, the building generates a complete transparency of its program and activities towards its central space and the community. The north and east facade, that faces Recoleta Avenue, are clad in a steel mesh as a second skin, to reflect the summertime direct solar radiation, improving the quality of the work stations. This play of materials confers on the complex a suggestive notoriety, based in transparencies and reflections. Few materials and volumetric simplicity are combined in a building of austere expression and great spatial dignity.

La extensión de Metro de Santiago Línea 1 al oriente corresponde a una trilogía de estaciones subterráneas desarrolladas bajo la Avenida Apoquindo: la primera en el sector de Manquehue, la siguiente en el sector de Hernando de Magallanes, para terminar con la tercera y nueva estación terminal de la Línea en la Plaza de los Domínicos.

The extension of Santiago’s line 1 subway towards the east consists of three new underground stations, all under Apoquindo Avenue: the first in Manquehue, the next on the Hernando de Magallanes area, ending with the third and new terminal station, in Los Dominicos Square.

Metro Estación Manquehue La Estación Manquehue se ubica inmediatamente al oriente de la Estación Escuela Militar, antigua estación terminal de la Línea 1. Se caracteriza por un prototipo de pique ovoidal, en que se ubican los recintos técnicos y de servicios más tres galerías de acceso conectadas por un puente peatonal, las que contienen la mesanina para acceder al túnel de la estación que aloja los andenes.

En superficie además se consideran accesos por el área norte y sur de Avenida Apoquindo, edículos especiales cuya configuración corresponde a dinámicos volúmenes de cristal, que dan cuenta de los accesos de la estación sin anular la vista y perspectiva de los edificios comerciales que constituyen el principal atractivo del lugar.

Manquehue Subway Station Manquehue Station is located immediately to the east of the Escuela Militar station, the old terminal station of line 1. It is characterized by an oval ditch prototype, in which the technical and service rooms are located, plus three access galleries connected by a pedestrian bridge that contains the mezzanine to access the station tunnel where the platforms are.

Entries from the north and south of Apoquindo Avenue from street level are considered as aedicules whose configuration corresponds to dynamic volumes of crystal, conveying the accesses to the station without annulling the view and perspective of the commercial buildings that constitute the main attraction of the place.

Metro Estación Hernando de Magallanes La Estación Hernando de Magallanes tiene características de “estación de paso”, emplazada al poniente de la Estación Los Domínicos. Su morfología corresponde a un prototipo de pique circular, donde se ubican los recintos técnicos y de servicios más una galería que contiene la mesanina para acceder al túnel de la estación que aloja los andenes.

En superficie se considera un edículo de acceso emplazado al sur de Avenida Apoquindo, sobre la plaza Manuel Larraín.

Este único elemento de superficie concentra las escaleras de acceso y ascensor de la estación, y se dispuso de manera tal de organizar las circulaciones del lugar contribuyendo por medio de su materialidad y luminosidad al rediseño total de la plaza existente.

Hernando de Magallanes Subway Station The Hernando de Magallanes Station has a “passerby-station” characteristic, situated to the west of Los Dominicos station. Its morphology corresponds to a circular ditch, in which the technical and service rooms are located, plus a gallery that contains the mezzanine to access the station tunnel where the platforms are.

At street level, an aedicule situated to the south of Apoquindo Avenue, on Manuel Larraín Square, provides access. In this one surface element are located the stairways and the station’s elevator, and it was placed in such a way to organize circulation, contributing with its materiality and luminosity to the total redesign of the existing square.

Metro Estación Los Domínicos La Estación Los Domínicos se constituye como una estación de término de la extensión y como punto de conexión con el futuro Edificio de Intercambio Modal y estacionamientos a emplazarse en el área correspondiente a la Plaza Los Domínicos.

Se caracteriza por ser un edificio de grandes proporciones, construido mediante una excavación de pique rectangular en el que se ubican los recintos técnicos, servicios y mesanina. A través de este se accede al túnel de la estación que aloja los andenes.

En superficie se consideran tres edículos de acceso y un ascensor, los únicos elementos construidos que dan cuenta de la existencia del edificio; la disposición de estos elementos y su materialidad pretenden reforzar el eje procesional existente hacia la iglesia que da nombre al sector, aportando con su presencia a orientar y ordenar el intenso flujo peatonal del lugar.

Los principales revestimientos de las estaciones son cerámicos, porcelanatos, hormigones abujardados en los muros y paneles metálicos en los cielos más la colocación de paneles de fibrocemento de alta compresión, elegidos e iluminados cuidadosamente para resaltar su colorimetría. El dimensionamiento de cada elemento se adecúa a las formas y condiciones especiales de los recintos subterráneos, propio de estos edificios.

Para la Estación Los Domínicos se eligieron colores que reflejen la situación en superficie, principalmente el verde de la plaza y el blanco de las fachadas de los edificios patrimoniales. En cambio, para la Estación Hernando de Magallanes se escogieron –en alusión al personaje histórico– tonos de azules de los colores del mar; por último, para la Estación Manquehue se optó por la gama de los “tierra” del paisaje variado y cambiante de arcilla y rocas del Cerro Manquehue, que preside, a lo lejos, la estación.

Los Domínicos Subway Station The Los Domínicos Station is constituted as a terminal station and as a connection point with the future Mode Interchange Building and parking, to be situated in the Los Dominicos Square. It is characterized as being a building of large proportions, constructed by a rectangular excavation where the technical and service rooms and mezzanine are located. From the mezzanine one accesses the station tunnel where the platforms are.

On the surface street level there are three aedicules and a lift, the only built elements which reveal the existence of the station building below; the disposition of these elements and their materiality attempts to reinforce the existing processional axis towards the church that gives name to the sector, contributing to orient and to order the intense pedestrian flow with their presence.

The main cladding materials of the stations are ceramic, porcelain floor tiles, bush-hammered concrete walls and metal panels on the ceilings, plus the high compression fibre-cement plates, chosen and carefully lit to emphasize their colouring. The sizing of each element adapts to the forms and special conditions of underground enclosures intrinsic of these buildings.

For the Los Domínicos station, colours that reflect the situation in the surface were chosen, primarily green from the square and white from the heritage buildings. For the Hernando de Magallanes station, tones of sea blue were chosen –in reference to the historical personage; finally, for the Manquehue Station it was decided on earthy colours of the varied landscape of clay and rocks of the Manquehue Hill that presides over the station in the distance.

Para la remodelación del Estadio Monumental se realizó un análisis de las condiciones existentes y los nuevos requerimientos del Club. Este estudio estuvo enfocado a un doble propósito: dar solución a los problemas más estructurales del funcionamiento del recinto y a generar una imagen corporativa fuerte y memorable. Para ello se desarrolló un concepto proyectual que potenciara la presencia del Monumental hacia la calle y expresara, en sus fachadas interiores y exteriores, un orden relacionado a los emblemas y colores de Colo Colo, incorporándolos en los diseños de pavimentos, pinturas de muros y elementos arquitectónicos en general.

For the remodelling of the Monumental Stadium, an analysis of the existing conditions and of the new requirements of the sports club, was conducted. This study had double focus: to solve the structural problems of operation in the stadium, and to generate a strong and memorable corporative image. A design concept was developed that harnessed the presence of the Monumental towards the street and expressed, in its interior and exterior facades, an order related to the emblems and colours of the Colo Colo team, incorporating them in the design of the pavement, wall paintings and in all the architectural elements in general.

Para abordar estratégicamente esta remodelación se realizó un plan maestro que ordenó una línea de acción cuyos puntos principales fueron: 1. Accesibilidad y desplazamientos masivos. Mediante el estudio del comportamiento y hábitos de distintos grupos de espectadores, se ideó un sistema de áreas confinadas (‘buffers’) y barandas canalizadoras (‘encauzadores’), que ordenaron los accesos permitiendo un desplazamiento fluido y seguro en la entrada y salida del recinto.

2. Vialidad, estacionamiento y paisajismo. Se realizó un plan de pavimentación de áreas destinadas a estacionamientos y vías peatonales incorporando nuevos accesos y trazados.

Paralelamente se diseñó un proyecto de paisajismo enfocado a generar colchones verdes entre las áreas peatonales y vehiculares y acentuar, mediante un cordón verde, la orbital peatonal que rodea el estadio.

3. Baños. Se remodelaron todos los baños públicos, incorporando en su diseño soluciones antivandálicas.

4. Graderías. Se instalaron butacas individuales en todo el estadio a partir de un nuevo trazado de sectores, generando un orden funcional en el control de espectadores. Se utilizaron butacas de acero electropintado con respaldos y asientos de plástico en dos colores, según un diseño general que consistió en un gran manto pixelado que pasa de negro a blanco. Este diseño logra dar un carácter activo al recinto independiente de la cantidad de público, y al mismo tiempo entrega una imagen emblemática y potente.

In order to strategically approach this remodelling, a master plan was made guiding a line of action, whose main points were: 1. Massive accessibility and displacements. Through a study of the behaviour and habits of different spectators groups, a system was devised which composed of confined areas (`buffers') and channelling railings (`guiders'). These ordered the accesses, allowing a fluid and safe displacement in both entrance and exit.

2. Road, parking and landscaping. A paving plan of areas destined to parking and to pedestrian paths was elaborated incorporating new accesses and layouts. A landscape project, focusing in generating green mattresses between the pedestrian and car areas was designed in parallel, and to accentuate, by means of a green cord, the pedestrian orbital that surrounds the stadium.

3. Bathrooms. All the public bathrooms were remodelled, incorporating anti-vandalism solutions in their design.

4. Stands. Individual seats, laid out in new sectors, were installed in the whole stadium, generating a functional order in the control of spectators. Steel painted armchairs with endorsements, and plastic seats, were used in two colours according to a design that consisted of a great mantle of black and white. This design achieves in giving an active character to the stadium regardless of the amount of public, and at the same time provides an emblematic and powerful image.

5. Cubierta de Marquesina. Se reemplazó por una estructura tenso textil translúcida de PVC, dando una presencia imponente al edificio principal sobre el contorno del estadio.

6. Perímetro de cristal. Se incorporó un perímetro de cristal templado reemplazando la malla de acero negra, mejorando así visibilidad y ‘limpiando’ la relación de la cancha con las graderías.

7. Administración y Museo. Se reoganizaron los espacios y programas bajo marquesina, lo que permitió proyectar nuevas oficinas administrativas y el museo de la institución.

8. Palcos Vips. Al reubicar y proyectar las cabinas de radio bajo marquesina se liberó una línea de palcos en la parte superior, con vistas privilegiadas hacia la cancha.

Se construyeron baños y un bar para palcos.

5. Awning cover. Was replaced by a tense structure of trans-lucid PVC textile, granting an imposing presence to the main building over the contour of the stadium.

6. Glazing perimeter. A tempered glazing perimeter was incorporated, replacing the black steel mesh, improving visibility and “cleaning” the relationship of the field with the stands.

7. Administration and museum. The spaces and programs were re-organized under the awning, enabling to have more administrative offices and a museum of the institution.

8. VIP boxes. In relocating the radio and media chambers bellow the awning, a line of boxes in the upper section was freed up, with privileged views towards the field. Bathrooms and a bar were also incorporated.

9. Acceso principal y muro perimetral. Mediante un diseño de líneas blancas y negras pintadas se puso en valor el muro perimetral como anillo contenedor. También se cambió el aspecto de la fachada a través de una propuesta de pocos elementos y fuerte presencia volumétrica mediante el rediseño de las torres del edificio principal y la plaza de acceso. Se ubicaron emblemas retro iluminados del club en la fachada y se instaló la estatua del cacique Colo Colo en el centro de la plaza de acceso, sobre un pedestal de hormigón blanco y cuarzo.

10. Otros recintos. Se realizaron remodelaciones en sector de camarines y cadetes, así como planes generales de señalética, iluminación y paisajismo.

9. Main access and perimeter wall. With a white and black painted lines design, the perimeter wall was valued as a containing ring.

Additionally, the appearance of the facade was changed with the proposition of few elements and a strong volumetric presence by the redesign of the towers of the main building and the access plaza. Back-lit club emblems were placed in the facade, as well as the statue of the Colo Colo cacique (indigenous of the time of the Spanish conquest) in the centre of the access plaza on top of a white concrete and quartz pedestal.

Este trabajo muestra el desarrollo de un proyecto integral de Arquitectura del Paisaje en Calama, ubicada en el desierto de Atacama, el más árido del mundo. Debido a las extremas condiciones climáticas y a la condición de la ciudad como el oasis más importante del norte chileno, el proyecto aunó el apoyo de distintos organismos y especialistas en el tema, en una experiencia única y experimental que ha generado grandes expectativas para el futuro desarrollo paisajístico de la zona.

This work illustrates the development of an integral project of landscape architecture in Calama, a city located within the most arid desert of the world, the Atacama Desert. Due to extreme climatic conditions and to the condition of being the most important oasis in Northern Chile, the project united the support of various agencies and specialists on the subject, in a unique and experimental occurrence that has generated great expectations for future landscape development of the area.

El encargo consistió en un Centro de Deportes y Recreación para trabajadores de Codelco –la más importante minera estatal–, en un terreno de 11 ha ubicado a orillas del río Loa, sector El Peumo de la ciudad de Calama. El proyecto forma parte del plan de traslado de la ciudad minera Chuquicamata hacia Calama, y el rol del paisaje fue definido como protagónico por el cliente, debiendo otorgar valor agregado al programa.

La proposición del Master Plan parte de una mirada paisajística del lugar, y asume al río Loa como punto central a considerar en la nueva propuesta. El agua, la topografía y los vientos son los elementos que pasan a estructurar el partido general del proyecto, creando un eje central de 300 m de largo, ordenador de todo el programa.

El agua, como elemento principal, genera vida y sensaciones a través de su recorrido. El canal existente y los 287.000 m³ de flujo anual que otorgan los derechos de agua de Codelco permiten que el agua recorra la totalidad del terreno, creando así el nuevo paisaje.

The assignment consisted in a Sports and Recreation Centre for the employees of Codelco –the most important State owned mining company– in a land of 11 ha located on the banks of the river Loa, in the El Peumo sector of Calama. This project is part of the transfer plan of the Chuquicamata mining town towards Calama. The role of the landscape was defined as crucial by the client, and must give added value to the program.

The proposition for the Master Plan, stems from a landscapeviewing of the place, and assumes the Loa River as a central point to consider in the new proposal. Water, topography and winds are the elements that structure the general scheme, creating a 300 m long axis which organizes the program.

Water, as the main element, generates life and sensations throughout its path. The existing channel and the annual flow of 287.000 m³ that Codelco’s water right grants it, allows the water to cross the totality of the site, likewise creating the new landscape.

La topografía, percibida como una planicie, presenta un desnivel de 2 m de norte a sur, coincidiendo con los requerimientos de orientación en las canchas deportivas y permitiendo generar el recorrido del agua que forma la columna vertebral del nuevo Master Plan.

Al ser una zona desértica, el viento juega un factor importante en la climatología del lugar: vientos de la pampa en las mañanas, de la cordillera en la tarde y fuertes ventarrones nocturnos ocasionan nubes de polvo suspendido, condiciones recogidas en el proyecto.

The topography, perceived as a plane, presents a drop of 2 m from north to south, coinciding with the requirements of orientation in sports arenas, and allowing for the generation of the water’s path, which forms the backbone of the new Master Plan.

Being a desert area, the wind plays an important factor in the climatology: plains winds in the morning, mountain winds in the afternoon and strong gales causing dust clouds at night, all conditions dealt with in the project.

Zonificación La propuesta recoge el programa de acuerdo a las actividades del usuario, reuniendo en el lado sur –próximo al acceso– todas las actividades deportivas, y hacia el lado norte –el borde del río– las actividades de carácter social para disfrutar del paisaje. La zonificación responde también a la voluntad de respetar y mantener la vegetación existente en el lugar de bofedales cercanos al río, que con la construcción de canchas deportivas habrían desaparecido.

La edificación que acoge el programa del área administrativa, gimnasio y camarines, se ubica en la Plaza del Agua (acceso), como centro de distribución a todas las actividades deportivas, conformando a su vez el portal de acceso al Paseo Principal que lleva al peatón a la zona del río.

El Club House se ubica en la zona de borde de río, al final del Paseo Principal, donde se aprovechan las vistas al paisaje lejano, y participa de la vegetación existente y de la nueva vegetación propuesta en el Jardín del Río.

La zona de picnic, con quinchos y pérgola institucional, logran el mismo objetivo ubicándose al costado poniente del Club House.

La pista de jogging recorre todo el terreno acompañada de vegetación, estableciendo las estaciones de ejercicios a distancias equivalentes en las distintas zonas.

Por el tamaño del terreno se optó por distribuir los estacionamientos de manera proporcional al uso de las distintas zonas propuestas.

Zoning The proposal incorporates the program according to the activities of the user, grouping in the south side –next to the access– all the sports activities, and toward the north side –the river’s edge– the social character activities whilst enjoying the scenery. The zoning responds additionally to the desire of respecting and maintaining the wetlands near the river, which would have disappeared with the construction of sports courts.

The building that embraces the administrative area, gymnasium and locker rooms is located in the Square Plaza (access), acting as a distribution centre to all the sports activities, and shaping in turn the entry to the Main Walkway that leads pedestrians to the river area.

With the advantages of having landscape views, and participating in the existing vegetation and in the new proposed vegetation for the River Garden, the Club House is located at the river’s edge, at the end of the Main Walkway. The picnic area, with barbecues and an institutional pergola, achieve the same objective at the west side of Club House.

The running path, with vegetation alongside all of it, spans the entire site and establishes equidistant exercise stations in the different areas.

Given the size of the site, it was chosen to distribute car parking in a proportional manner to the use of the different sectors proposed.

El paisaje El proyecto propone llevar la presencia del río, a través del agua y la vegetación, al portal de acceso.

La toma del agua en el canal existente alimenta el primer estanque, donde se genera el Jardín del Río; el agua es conducida a través de un canal reforzado por muros de gaviones, que acompañan al Paseo Principal, llegando al segundo estanque donde se genera la Plaza del Agua.

Se decidió enfatizar la vegetación en los puntos más importantes, reforzando los conceptos del Master Plan. Es así como en el Jardín del Río y la Plaza del Agua se proponen zonas de vegetación que acompañan los estanques de acumulación de agua, formando verdaderos jardines donde predominen los colores de las distintas especies.

En el Jardín del Río se proyectó vegetación que se sumara al paisaje de las orillas del río, por lo cual se conservaron las zonas de bofedales y se propusieron cultivos de alfalfa sembrada en sistema de ‘eras’, tradicional del norte chileno. Además se proyectaron plantaciones del flores bajas que junto con los paños de alfalfa acompañan las líneas sinuosas del río.

Todas las especies se escogieron tomando en cuenta su adaptación al suelo y clima, disponibilidad y, especialmente, forma, tamaño y textura para proporcionar vistas y coloridos interesantes.

La arborización abarca la totalidad de terreno, acompañando al peatón en todos los caminos y senderos.

The landscape The project intends to convey the presence of the river to the entryway, through water and vegetation.

The water inlet of the exiting channel feeds the first tank, where the River Garden is created; the water is conducted through a reinforced gabion wall channel, beside the Main Walkway, reaching the second tank where the Water Plaza is generated.

It was decided to emphasize the vegetation in the most important points to reinforce the Master Plan’s concepts. It is as such that in both the River Garden and the Water Plaza, vegetation zones are proposed that accompany the water tanks, forming real gardens where the colours of the various species dominate.

Vegetation was placed in the River Garden to sum up to the river’s edge landscape, thus the wetlands were kept, and crops of alfalfa were incorporated, planted in the 'eras' system, traditional of Northern Chile. Furthermore, low flowers plants were placed, which together with the alfalfa, accompany the winding Loa River.

All the plant species were chosen taking into account their adaptation to the soil and to the climate, availability and especially size, shape and texture, in order to provide views and interesting colours.

The tree planting covers the whole site, accompanying the pedestrian on all roads and trails.

A fondo se comprometió la AOA con Escuelas para Chile, proyecto surgido de la campaña Chile Ayuda a Chile tras el terremoto y maremoto de febrero de 2010, organizada por la Fundación Teletón. A sólo nueve meses de la catástrofe, las siete oficinas asociadas participantes -bajo la coordinación de la AOA- lograron reconstruir y levantar un total de 320 escuelas modulares, distribuidas en más de 800 kilómetros y bajo los más altos estándares de infraestructura. Una

AOA deeply committed itself with Schools for Chile, a project organized by the Teleton, which emerged after the earthquake and tidal wave of February 2010. Only nine months from the natural disaster, seven participating offices of the association –under the coordination of the AOA– achieved in reconstructing and erecting a total of 320 modular schools, distributed in more than 800 kilometres, and with the highest infrastructure standards.

A titanic and successful task.

Luego del gran terremoto de 8.8º Richter y posterior maremoto del 27 de febrero del año pasado, la Fundación Teletón organizó la jornada Chile Ayuda a Chile: a los pocos días, el 5 y 6 de marzo y con el país aún perplejo por lo sucedido, se levantaron fuerzas para ayudar a los damnificados. La tarea de reunir $15.000 millones (US$30 millones) para construir viviendas de emergencia se cumplió con creces, totalizándose más de $45.000 millones (US$90 millones). La Teletón había acordado que el excedente de la meta -que se entregó a Un Techo para Chile, organismo que canalizó la construcción de las casas básicas de emergencia- se destinaría a la reconstrucción de las escuelas dañadas o arrasadas por la catástrofe.

Con esta misión, de inmediato se formó Escuelas para Chile, agrupación presidida por el empresario Lázaro Calderón quien junto al presidente de Fundación Teletón, Carlos Alberto Délano, iniciaron los contactos para integrar un Comité que congregaría a expertos de distintas especialidades, además de representantes del Ministerio de Educación y de la Oficina de Reconstrucción Nacional. Así se dio forma a la gigantesca tarea de reconstrucción que abarcaría más de 320 escuelas y a más de 126 mil alumnos de enseñanza pre-básica, básica y secundaria de las regiones afectadas.

El 7 de marzo la Asociación de Oficinas de Arquitectos de Chile (AOA) se unió al Comité de Escuelas para Chile, donde su vicepresidente, el arquitecto Yves Besançon, participó como Director de Arquitectura.

Como primer paso se visitaron fábricas locales de módulos con el fin de evaluar sus productos y su aplicabilidad en recintos escolares, pero ninguna tenía la capacidad suficiente para cumplir con la rápida y masiva reconstrucción, y lograr que miles de niños de las zonas arrasadas no perdieran un solo día de clases, como era el compromiso oficial. En paralelo se recibieron ofertas de sistemas modulares chinos, españoles y canadienses, los cuales tampoco cumplían con el programa de entregas necesarios para el proyecto.

Carlos Alberto Délano, Lázaro Calderón e Yves Besançon hicieron entonces un viaje relámpago a Estados Unidos para visitar una fábrica especializada en escuelas modulares en Miami, que sí cumplía con las exigencias de calidad, tiempos de entrega y volúmenes requeridos para enfrentar la emergencia. Fruto de las negociaciones se compraron 1.000 módulos equivalentes a 40.000 m² de salas de clases, que se transportarían por barco hacia puertos chilenos para luego ser trasladados por tierra hasta cada uno de los diferentes destinos que se definieran.

After the great 8.8º Richter earthquake and consequent tidal wave of the 27 of February of last year, the Teleton Foundation organized the event “Chile helps Chile”, on the 5th and 6th of March, very few days after the disaster, where forces rose to help the victims in a country still perplexed by what happened. The task of collecting $15,000 million (US$30 million) to build emergency houses was easily achieved, in fact reaching more than $45,000 million (US$90 million). Teleton had agreed that the excess of this target –that was delivered to A Roof for Chile (Un Techo para Chile), organism that channelled the emergency housing– would be given to the reconstruction of the schools damaged or devastated by the catastrophe.

With this mission, immediately the Schools for Chile was formed, presided by the industrialist Lazaro Calderón, who next to president of Teleton Foundation, Carlos Alberto Délano, initiated the contacts to integrate a Committee that would unite experts of different specialties, in addition to representatives of the Ministry of Education and the National Reconstruction Office. Thus, the gigantic task of reconstruction that would embrace 320 schools and more than 126 thousand students of kindergarten, junior and senior levels of the affected area, was formed.

On the 7th of March the Architectural Office Association (AOA) joined the Schools of Chile committee, where its vice-president, the architect Yves Besançon, participated as the Architecture Director.

As a first step, local manufacturers of modules were visited with the aim of evaluating its products and its feasibility in schools, but none had enough capacity to fulfil the quick and massive reconstruction, and achieving that thousands of kids of the devastated areas did not lose even one day of school, as was the official commitment.

In parallel, numerous offers were received of Chinese, Spanish and Canadian modular systems, which also could not accomplish the delivery schedule necessary for the project.

Carlos Alberto Délano, Lázaro Calderón and Yves Besançon thus made a quick trip the States to visit a factory specializing in modular schools in Miami, which did fulfil the quality requirements, delivery times and volumes required to face the emergency. Product of the negotiations, 1000 modules were purchased, that were to be transported by ship to Chilean ports, to then be taken by ground to each one of the determined destinations.

Los módulos seleccionados ofrecían múltiples ventajas respecto a los demás: se trataba de unidades íntegramente armadas, revestidas exteriormente con planchas de acero y aluminio pre pintado, cuyo sistema de montaje -sobre seis ejes- facilitaba el transporte por tierra. El interior de las salas, terminado con pavimento de alfombra o linóleo, con revestimientos de vinilo o placas de fórmica en los muros, pizarras, iluminación incorporada al cielo falso, luces de emergencia y puertas de escape, además de ventanas del tipo termopanel de aluminio, hicieron que el producto elegido estuviera dentro de los más altos estándares mundiales para colegios. Sin embargo, el hecho de venir armados complicó el transporte marítimo, que solo unos pocos barcos en el mundo podían resolver.

Se inició entonces la inscripción y selección de escuelas que contarían con esta ayuda. El Comité recorrió una a una las regiones en emergencia para exponer el proyecto a las autoridades comunales, de modo que, posteriormente, postularan a la reconstrucción de los establecimientos dañados. Dependiendo del tipo y magnitud de daños fue la respuesta que Escuelas para Chile entregó.

Los arquitectos socios de la AOA que trabajaron voluntariamente en diferentes proyectos, además de la oficina central de Arquitectura de Escuelas para Chile que formó, dirigió y coordinó el arquitecto Carlos Alberto Urzúa, logró terminar en tiempo récord el diseño de todos los proyectos, que luego fueron licitados por el Director de Construcción del Comité, arquitecto Juan García. Fue así como las oficinas asociadas Infante, Vial, Ihnen Arquitectos, José Domingo Peñafiel Arquitectos, Turner Arquitectos, Edwards y Soffia Arquitectos, Víctor Lobos Arquitectos, Carlos Alberto Urzúa Arquitectos y Alemparte, Barreda, Wedeles, Besançon Arquitectos y Asociados, movilizaron a sus respectivos equipos para la reconstrucción de los colegios.

Contra el tiempo El gran desafío de los equipos involucrados fue proyectar y construir al mismo tiempo… y contra el tiempo. Así, apenas a nueve meses del terremoto, culminó la titánica labor de reconstruir, reparar y levantar un total de 320 proyectos de escuelas, entre las regiones Metropolitana y Octava, que abarcan 800 kilómetros del territorio nacional.

The selected modules offered multiple advantages in respect to the others: they were units completely assembled, externally clad with plates of steel and prepainted aluminium, whose assembly system - on six axes - facilitated ground transport. The interior of the rooms, with carpeting or with linoleum floor, vinyl or Formica veneer on the walls, blackboards, lighting incorporated on the raised ceiling, emergency lights and exit doors, hermetically-sealed-double glazing aluminium frame windows, also enabled that the chosen product had the highest international standards for schools. Nevertheless, the fact that they came ready assembled complicated the marine transport, given that only few ship in the world could handle them.

Next, the inscription and selection of the schools that would have this help, started. The Committee visited one by one the devastated areas to expose the project to the local authorities, so that the next step would be for them to apply to the reconstruction of the damaged establishments. The School’s for Chile answer was that it depending on the type and intensity of the damage.

The AOA member architects that volunteered in different projects, along with the Architecture Central Office of Schools for Chile that was formed, directed and coordinated by the architect Carlos Alberto Urzúa, achieved in finishing in record time the design of all the projects, that were then bided by the Construction Director of the Committee, architect Juan García. As such, the member offices of Infante, Vial, Ihnen Architects, José Domingo Peñafiel Architects, Turner Architects, Edwards and Soffia Architects, Víctor Lobos Architects, Carlos Alberto Urzúa Architects and Alemparte, Barreda, Wedeles, Besançon Associated Architects, mobilized its respective teams for the reconstruction of the schools.

Against time The greatest challenge of the teams involved, was to design and build at the same time… and against time. In fact, only nine months after the earthquake the titanic labour was completed of repairing and erecting a total of 320 school projects, in between the Metropolitan and the Eighth region, that encompasses 800 kilometres of the country.

Este trabajo enfrentó los filtros de la burocracia, las inclemencias del clima y la dispar ubicación de cada una de las escuelas.

Para resolver el problema del escaso tiempo se tomaron ciertas decisiones clave. Se estableció que una oficina centralizaría la elaboración de los planos generales de las escuelas tipo y los detalles de los espacios públicos y baños. Posteriormente, las otras oficinas participantes se encargarían de los planos generales de cada una de las escuelas con la topografía disponible y otros antecedentes, muchas veces insuficientes o incompletos.

La oficina central tomaría a su cargo los proyectos más complejos, no sólo por su envergadura sino por su relación con edificaciones que se deseaba conservar o respetar de cada proyecto. En varias ocasiones se trabajó con mínimos antecedentes, en un "fast track” permanente y desquiciado.

La cantidad de proyectos y la gran extensión de la tarea hizo de este desafío un trabajo que involucró a un gran número de profesionales, técnicos y trabajadores que se sumaron como un equipo silencioso y eficiente, que buscó ubicar la Educación en un lugar digno y de primer nivel, con todo la tecnología disponible y los medios para lograrlo.

This work faced the bureaucracy filters, the inclemency of the climate and the different location of each one of the schools.

To resolve the limited time issue, certain key decisions were taken. It was established that an office, would centralize the elaboration of the general plans and the details of the spaces public and bathrooms for the generic school type.

Later, the other participating offices would be in charge of the general plans of each one of the schools with topography and other information available, many times insufficient or often incomplete. The central office would take care of the most complex projects, not only because of their magnitude but also because of its relationship with specific constructions that were aimed to be conserved or respected in each project. On several occasions one worked with minimum information, in a permanent and crazy “fast track” mode.

The quantity of the projects and the great breadth of this task required this challenge to involve a great number of professionals, technicians and workmen that joined as a silent and efficient team, which sought to locate Education in a worthy place of first level, with all the technology available and the means to obtain it.

Jardín Infantil Nivequeten, Laja, Victor Lobos Arquitectos Las escuelas fueron construidas con solo tres elementos básicos: salas modulares, pasos cubiertos y galpones para cubrir canchas multiuso (en algunos casos). También se incorporaron los jardines y áreas de juegos.

El aporte del diseño arquitectónico consistió en la organización espacial, el ordenamiento funcional y la conformación de llenos y vacíos para crear un ambiente propicio para la educación, que en muchos casos superó a los recintos originales. La participación del equipo de diseño, liderado por Macarena Aguilar, propuso la imagen que sería el sello característico y unitario de todas las escuelas en las que participó el Comité Escuelas para Chile con la AOA. Cada proyecto se adecuó a terrenos que no contaban con los antecedentes técnicos necesarios, se conectó a los servicios de infraestructura y fue necesario asumir también la tramitación y obtención de los permisos municipales correspondientes.

La capacidad de los arquitectos para conformar, dirigir y coordinar equipos multidisciplinarios permitió que en nueve meses se diseñaran, construyeran y entregaran para su uso una superficie de obras nuevas estimada en 70.000 m², en toda la extensión de la zona afectada por el terremoto.

The schools were built in only three basic elements: modular rooms, covered hallways and sheds for the multi-use courts (in some cases). Gardens and play areas were also incorporated. The contribution of architectural design consisted in the spatial organization, the functional order and the conformation of mass and void to create a propitious atmosphere for education, which in many cases surpassed the original enclosures. The participation of the design team, lead by Macarena Aguilar, proposed the image that would be the unifying characteristic seal of all the schools in which the Schools for Chile Committee with the AOA participated.

Each project was adapted to sites that did not count with the necessary technical information. They were also connected to infrastructure services,C and it was necessary to also carry out the paperwork for the respective building permits.

The capacity of the architects to conform, to direct and to coordinate multidisciplinary teams allowed that in nine months an approximate surface of 70.000 m² was designed, constructed and handed for use, in the whole extent of the zone affected by the earthquake.

Museo del Vino en el Cerro San Cristóbal Wine Museum in the San Cristóbal Hill Organizado por Arquitectum, junto a la Universidad Finis Terrae y la Asociación de Viñas de Chile, el Concurso Internacional Santiago de Chile 2010 invitó a arquitectos de todo el mundo a diseñar un museo que contenga áreas de exhibición de la historia del vino del siglo XX y constituya un hito para la capital chilena. Se ubicaría en el emblemático cerro San Cristóbal.

Organized by Arquitectum, together with Finis Terrae University and the Association of Chilean Wineries, the Santiago International Competition of 2010 invited architects of all over the world to design a museum that consisted in exhibition areas showcasing the history of wine in the twentieth century, and that would constitute a landmark for the Chilean capital. It would be located in the emblematic San Cristóbal Hill.

El objetivo del concurso fue reunir propuestas e ideas para la el diseño y la construcción de un Museo del Vino que se constituya en un nuevo hito arquitectónico de Santiago. Como emplazamiento se definió un lote del cerro San Cristóbal, punto privilegiado tanto por su entorno natural como por su presencia urbana, telón de fondo que se relaciona con el concepto de un producto natural-artificial como es el vino.

De las numerosas y originales propuestas provenientes de todo el mundo, el jurado –integrado por Cristina Felsenhardt, Enrique Browne, Felipe Assadi, José Gabriel Alemparte, Jorge Marsino y Bernardo Kupfer– destacó las de los equipos de México (1er lugar), Argentina (2º) y Albania (3er).

The objective of the competition was to gather proposals and ideas for the design and construction of the Wine Museum, which would become an architectural landmark for Santiago. A privileged spot was selected for the location, both for its natural surroundings and for its urban presence; backdrop relating to the concept of a natural-artificial product such as wine.

Out of the numerous and original proposals received from all over the world, the jury, made up by Cristina Felsenhardt, Enrique Browne, Felipe Assadi, José Gabriel Alemparte, Jorge Marsino and Bernardo Kupfer, choose the ones from the teams of Mexico (1st place), Argentina (2nd place) and Albania (3rd place).

El valor del tiempo: el edificio, como el vino, envejece, y su materialidad muta progresivamente en una relación del tiempo y espacio, permitiendo que la naturaleza circundante lo envuelva y lo integre progresivamente, asumiendo así el paso del tiempo como un aliado.

La piel se configura como una inmersión permeable que filtra y conecta las sensaciones internas y externas; guarda las sorpresas del interior y crea conexiones mágicas con el entorno por medio de la luz y la vegetación, construyendo un gran cuerpo que emerge con el lugar.

Además de ser una sucesión de galerías y rutas lineales, el museo es un emisor constante de corrientes y sensaciones relacionadas al proceso de vinificación, y el observador puede disfrutar del espacio y del ritual de la degustación a través de acciones que encierran misterio, creación, fluidez, inmersión, filtros de aire y estructura.

The value of time: the building as well as wine, ages, and its materiality mutates progressively in a time space relation, allowing the surrounding nature to envelope and integrate it constantly, allying itself thus to the passage of time.

The skin is formed like a permeable immersion that filters and connects internal and external sensations; it protects surprises from the interior and creates magical connections with the surroundings by means of light and vegetation, constructing a great body that emerges with the place.

In addition to being a succession of galleries and linear routes, the museum is a constant emitter of currents and sensations related to the wine-making process, and the observer can savour the space and the ritual of wine-tasting through actions that procure mystery, creation, fluidity, immersion, air filters and structure.

Una trama de viñedos se extiende a lo largo del terreno, permitiendo al visitante vivir el proceso de elaboración del vino en su totalidad. Las áreas de exposición están dentro del cerro San Cristóbal, aprovechando su pendiente natural para adentrarse en él a medida que se avanza por el recorrido planteado. Las salas emergen del mismo cerro, creando una relación directa entre arquitectura y terreno, donde ninguno compite con el otro sino que se confunden dentro de una totalidad.

Todos los espacios buscan recrear situaciones lumínicas, espaciales y sensoriales similares a las que se pueden experimentar dentro de una bodega.

Las salas están conectadas entre sí a través de patios enterrados dispuestos en puntos estratégicos. En cada uno, un globo aerostático otorga la posibilidad de elevarse hacia el sky bar, ubicado en el punto más alto del complejo, o seguir subiendo hacia un tour panorámico. Las vistas sobre Santiago son inigualables, sin comprometer el paisaje existente.

A plot of vineyards extends throughout the land, allowing the visitor to experience the process of elaboration of wine in its totality. The exhibition areas are inside the San Cristóbal Hill, taking advantage of its natural slope to enter the hill as one advances on the proposed exhibition route. The rooms emerge from the hill itself, creating a direct relationship between architecture and land, where neither competes with the other, but are confused within a totality.

All the spaces seek to recreate the lighting, spatial and sensorial situations similar to those found within a warehouse.

The rooms are connected to each other through buried patios arranged in strategic important points. In each one, an air balloon grants the possibility of rising to the sky bar, located in the highest point of the complex, or of continuing to rise on a panoramic tour. The views on Santiago are matchless without jeopardizing the existing landscape.

Tributo a la naturaleza: el desafío de la arquitectura de hoy se encuentra en crear edificios completamente funcionales que no sólo sean amigables con la naturaleza, sino también ‘copien’ la naturaleza en su comportamiento y apariencia, minimizando el impacto visual de la intervención.

Considerando el contexto urbano donde se construirá el museo y la cercana relación de su programa con la naturaleza, se lo ha conceptualizado como una vasija verde, con tierra de cultivos, plantas, labores y un camino peatonal al aire libre que atraviesa las plataformas de observación de naturaleza y espacios funcionales.

El museo tiene muros verdes que reducen el impacto visual y ambiental y filtran las emisiones de CO2. Cuenta con un colector de agua de lluvia para consumo normal y para asegurar el ciclo natural de las plantas.

Tribute to nature: the challenge of today’s architecture is in creating completely functional buildings that not only are friendly with the nature, but also `copies' nature in their behaviour and appearance, diminishing the visual impact of the intervention.

Considering the urban context where the museum will be constructed and the close relationship of its program with nature, the museum has been conceptualized as a green vase, with cropland, plants, workings and a pedestrian outdoor path that crosses the nature viewing platforms and service spaces.

The museum has green walls that reduce the visual and environmental impact and filter the CO2 emissions. It has a rainwater collector for normal use and to assure the natural cycle of the plants.

El proyecto busca la intervención natural del Cerro San Cristóbal en el tejido urbano de Santiago, para combinarlos y transformarlos en un edificio híbrido que responde positivamente a la ciudad y al parque nacional. El museo se desarrolla con la pendiente del sitio, elevando la mayor parte de sus espacios como losas flotantes que dejan el suelo debajo intacto. A lo largo del entramado, los visitantes pueden tener una experiencia sensorial de la fabricación del vino como una evolución de espacios interiores y terrazas.

The project seeks the natural intervention of the San Cristobal Hill in the urban fabric of Santiago, combining and transforming them into a hybrid building that responds positively to the city and to the national park. The museum evolves with the slope of the place, elevating the majority of its spaces as floating slabs, leaving the floor underneath intact. Along the length of the structure, visitors can have a sensory experience of wine-making as an evolution of interior spaces and terraces.

Considerando la relación entre el parque y la ciudad, y el impacto sobre el terreno, se establece un solo edificio lineal, suspendido sobre pilotes que resalta y establece un relación directa con la pendiente del terreno, respetando las concentraciones de árboles existentes. De esta manera todos los recintos de exposición cuentan con iluminación y vistas hacia el entorno, sin irrumpir con el paisaje y respetando la escala del lugar.

Considering the relationship between the park and the city, and the impact on the land, a single linear suspended building is established, which emphasizes and sets a direct relationship with the slope and respects the existing tree concentrations. By this way, all the enclosures of exhibition have both light and views towards the surroundings without disrupting the landscape and respecting the scale of the place.

Chile, un país largo y angosto / Chile, a long and narrow country

La idea parte del concepto del “terroir”, que alude a las condiciones de geografía, luz, clima y suelo que definen a un vino. Se buscó entonces que el museo evocara al lugar donde se concibe la vid, su origen, de manera simple y sencilla. Que mediante su recorrido creara la impresión de estar bajo la parra y circular por la viña, dónde hay cierto ritmo constante, el cielo se asoma de manera discontinua y se da la sensación de contención expuesta.

The idea stems from the concept of “terroir” that alludes to the conditions of geography, light, climate and ground that determine a wine. It was thus proposed that the museum evokes to the place where the grapevine is conceived, its origin, in a simple and easy way. That by means of its route, it would create the impression to be under a grapevine, circulating around the vineyard, where there is a steady pace, the sky looks discontinuous and there is a sense of exposed containment.

El museo nace de la tierra misma hasta hacerse presente en un remate que permite el asomo al recorrido realizado.

La sensación de contención expuesta de estar bajo la parra, donde el cielo se deja entrever, la discontinuidad de este.

The museum is born out of the ground until presenting itself in a conclusion that enables the sight of the taken route.

Una selección de más de 260 croquis reúne el segundo volumen de la serie editada por Publicaciones AOA, que esta vez recopila los dibujos hechos por un grupo de 11 profesionales socios durante las cuatro giras tecnológicas realizadas por la Asociación de Oficinas de Arquitectos de Chile durante 2007 y 2008, como parte de sus iniciativas de actualización de conocimientos técnicos y arquitectónicos.

Se trata de un singular y muy personal recorrido por India, Dubai y Abu Dhabi, Inglaterra y Holanda, Cuba y, por último, el Sudeste Asiático, bajo la mirada y pluma de los arquitectos Carlos Alberto Urzúa –quien además dirigió la edición–, Cristián Boza, José Gabriel Alemparte, Andrés Briones, José Antonio de Frutos, Fernando Guarello, Jorge Iglesis, Raúl Irarrázabal, Charles Murray, David Rodríguez e Iván Vial, todos ellos también talentosos croquistas.

Sus diversas y versátiles miradas constituyen un viaje por la expresividad y subjetividad del trazo frente a la arquitectura y el paisaje, como destaca la presentación hecha por la Corporación Patrimonio Cultural de Chile, entidad que patrocinó la realización del libro en reconocimiento a su calidad y aporte cultural.

Los resultados de una encuesta hecha por la Universidad del Desarrollo acerca de Santiago impulsaron la realización de este libro, desarrollado en conjunto por la Facultad de Arquitectura y Arte y el área de Publicaciones de la AOA. Su objetivo, mostrar la percepción y opinión que los habitantes tienen de su ciudad, que forma parte importante de su espacio existencial.

Así, más allá de la visión de arquitectos, sociólogos o urbanistas, surgieron los 14 lugares que en definitiva constituyen el ‘alma’ de nuestra capital, los cuales inspiraron los textos a cargo de académicos de la UDD, en su mayoría arquitectos. El libro se complementa con numerosas imágenes que nos permiten una nueva y más amable mirada sobre la ciudad.

“Santiago fue amada de nuevo, como en los comienzos. Amada como hay que amar, con sus defectos, sus sombras, sus errores y una belleza que no está en los libros sino en las calles caminadas, en los rincones, en los lugares donde se amó y sufrió. Porque sólo puede hablar y decir una ciudad quien amó y sufrió en ella”, según se lee en el evocador cierre escrito por Cristián Warnken, decano de la Facultad de Educación y Humanidades UDD.

A selection of more than 260 sketches are united in this second volume of this series edited by AOA Publications, which this time round compiles drawings done by a group of 11 member professionals during the four technological tours carried out by the Architectural Office Association of Chile during 2007 and 2008, as part of its initiative of technical and architectural knowledge updates.

It is about an unique and very personal journey through India, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, England and Holland, Cuba and lastly Southeast Asia, under the eye and pencil of the architects Carlos Alberto Urzúa –who also directed the edition–, Cristián Boza, José Gabriel Alemparte, Andrés Briones, José Antonio de Frutos, Fernando Guarello, Jorge Iglesis, Raúl Irarrázabal, Charles Murray, David Rodríguez and Iván Vial, all of them also talented sketch artists.

Their diverse and versatile sight constitutes a journey through expression and subjectivity of the drawing line regarding architecture and the landscape, as is highlighted in the presentation done by the Cultural Patrimony Corporation of Chile, organization that sponsored the book in recognition to its quality and cultural contribution.

The results of a survey carried out by the University of Development (Universidad del Desarrollo - UDD) on Santiago, generated this book, developed in conjunction with the College of Architecture and Art and the Publications area of the AOA. Its objective was to illustrate the perception and opinion that habitants have of their city, which is an important part of its existential space.

Thus, beyond the vision of architects, sociologists or city planners, the 14 places that really constitute the `soul’ of our capital arose, which inspired texts by UDD faculty, on the majority architects. The book is complimented with numerous images that allow a new and more amicable relationship with the city.

“Santiago was loved once again as in the start. Loved as it has to be, with its defects, its shadows, its errors and a beauty that is not in the books, but is in the streets, in the corners, in the places where one has loved and suffered. Because only those who have loved and suffered in a city, can talk and say” according to the evocative closing written by Cristián Warnken, dean of the Faculty of Education and Humanities UDD (University of Development).

Blanca Montaña: Arquitectura reciente en Chile White Mountain: Recent architecture in Chile

Dirigida por los arquitectos Jeannette Plaut y Marcelo Sarovic, esta nueva publicación de carácter independiente está orientada a la promoción, difusión e investigación de la arquitectura, diseño y arte desarrollado en Chile. Planteada como un esfuerzo de internacionalización de la producción nacional, su primera edición aborda el lanzamiento del nuevo programa de arquitectura emergente en Chile: Young Architect’s Program, llamado PAL, asociado a MoMA PS1.

El número también investiga sobre el fenómeno de los caracoles comerciales de los años 70 y 80 en nuestro país. Además se incluyen entrevistas a Glenn Lowry y a Barry Bergdoll, director y curador Jefe de Arquitectura del MoMA, respectivamente, junto a artículos de Moritz Küng y Fernando Pérez Oyarzún más una entrevista hecha por Cosmin Casiuc al crítico británico-americano Kenneth Fampton.

En cuanto a la difusión de obras, destacan entre otras el trabajo experimental de Smiljan Radic (Moon Shadow) y del arquitecto-artista radicado en Nueva York Alfredo Jaar.

Directed by the architects Jeannette Plaut and Marcelo Sarovic, this new publication of an independent character is oriented to the promotion, divulgence and investigation of architecture, design and art developed in Chile. Proposed as an effort of internationalization of national production, its first edition presents the launch of the new program of emerging architecture in Chile: Young Architect’s Program, known as PAL, associated to MoMA PS1.

The edition also investigates the phenomenon of the snail shaped commercial galleries of the 70’s and 80’s in our country. Textos del propio Adriá –para quien “la arquitectura chilena es la más interesante y original de todo el continente americano”- y de los profesores e investigadores Horacio Torrent y Pablo Allard son la antesala de las 121 obras escogidas, y que incluyen proyectos de 60 reconocidos estudios de arquitectos vigentes.

A lo largo de más de 500 páginas, el proyecto editorial busca posicionar culturalmente a nuestro país en el exterior mediante ediciones pensadas para estar presentes en los más importantes museos y galerías del mundo.

This luxury book took three years of work, which under the edition of the Catalan architect Miquel Adriá, director of the Arquine Mexican magazine, compiles the most important contemporary architectural icons of Chile. Texts by Adriá himself – to whom “Chilean architecture is the most interesting and original of all the American continent” – and texts of the professors and researchers Horacio Torrent and Pablo Allard, are the prelude to the 121 selected buildings and which includes projects of 60 renowned architecture practices.

In more than 500 pages, the editorial project intends to culturally position our country internationally by means of editions intended to be present in the most important museums and galleries of the world.
