An inventive structure 140 meters high and with 11 rings designed by the office of Smiljan Radic was the winning entry for this competition organized by the Ministry of Housing, to eradicate the visual pollution caused by the proliferation of telecommunications antennas at the Santiago Metropolitan Park.
Aspectos tanto urbanos y estéticos como prácticos y tecnológicos debían abordar los proyectos participantes, ya que por una parte se buscaba generar una estructura icónica e innovadora que marcara presencia distintiva en el cerro San Cristóbal y en la ciudad y, por otra, que reuniera en una sola torre las múltiples antenas de telecomunicaciones allí instaladas, aportando de paso un nuevo espacio de carácter público al Parque Metropolitano. En el concurso, público e internacional, participaron alrededor de 60 propuestas, 42 de ellas de oficinas locales. El jurado estuvo integrado, entre otros, por Rodrigo Pérez Mackenna, entonces titular del Ministerio de Vivienda y Urbanismo; Sebastián Gray, presidente del Colegio de Arquitectos; y Leopoldo Prat, decano de la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Chile. El jurado destacó especialmente la interacción del proyecto ganador con el emblemático monumento de la Virgen, ubicado a 600 m. The participating projects were to address both urban and aesthetic as well as practical and technological aspects. On one hand they were to create an iconic and innovative structure with a distinctive presence on San Cristobal Hill and the city, and on the other, combine in a single tower the multiple telecommunication antennas located there, while providing the Metropolitan Park with a new public space. The open and international competition gathered close to 60 proposals, 42 of them from local offices. The jury was composed, among others, by Rodrigo Pérez Mackenna, then head of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development; Sebastián Gray, president of the Colegio de Arquitectos; and Leopoldo Prat, dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Chile. The jury underlined the interaction of the winning project with the iconic monument of the Virgin, located 600 m away. The Santiago Antenna Tower will be 140 m high and have 11 rings; it will feature changing nocturnal lighting, a public terrace, pond, café, shop, ticket office and public restrooms. The start of construction would be in early 2015 and due in 2017, in time for the centennial of the Metropolitan Park.

Se propone construir un objeto híbrido, cuya apariencia se moverá entre una torre y una antena. Entre un cuerpo estable y reconocible, y otro que se desarma transparentando una apariencia inestable e inquieta. Por la escala y tamaño del proyecto propuesto las lecturas obligadas para la revisión de su eficacia urbana deben ser hechas desde una distancia muy próxima y otra muy lejana. Todas las medidas intermedias cuelgan de estas como soluciones resultantes. La antena siempre se leerá como un cuerpo transparente fuera de línea, sutilmente cambiante gracias a sus módulos estructurales en rotación, pero ordenados formalmente a través de la modulación estándar de sus componentes y de los anillos técnicos que flotan desde sus vértices formando una columna virtual en toda su altura. De noche, cada uno de los elementos que la construyen será distinguido con una iluminación diaria cambiante en periodos semanales en su densidad y color. Esto permitirá medir el tiempo o su rutina semanal, a la manera de las antiguas torres de pueblo y sus campanas. The project proposes the construction of a hybrid object, somewhat between a tower and an antenna, between a stable and recognizable body, and one that comes apart revealing an unstable and restless appearance. Due to the scale and size of the proposed project the reading of its urban efficiency must be made both from a very short distance and from far away. All intermediate decisions depend on these as resulting solutions. The antenna is always read as an offset, transparent body, subtly changing due to its rotating structural modules but formally organized through the standard modulation of its components and technical rings floating from its vertices forming a virtual full-height column. At night, each of its composing elements will be discernible through daytime illumination changing density and color every week. This will allow the track of time or weekly cycles, in the manner of old bell towers.
