El primer artículo de este número aborda a Mario Pérez de Arce Lavín (1917-2010), respetado arquitecto y académico. Su hijo y socio, Mario Pérez de Arce Antoncich, explica la obra de su padre a la luz de su personalidad y como resultado de un largo proceso intelectual.

En cuanto a las obras de nuestros socios, de manera excepcional destacamos tres proyectos de infraestructura deportiva: el Velódromo de Peñalolén, el Centro Acuático Estadio Nacional y el Centro Deportivo Odesur. Como edificio corporativo mostramos las oficinas Resiter, como edificios públicos presentamos la Biblioteca Independencia en Santiago y el Edificio Consistorial de Pencahue, y en vivienda publicamos el Edificio Pocuro-Andacollo y la casa Mava en Zapallar, entre otras obras.

En la entrevista internacional, conversamos con Pablo Katz, vicepresidente de la Sociedad Francesa de Arquitectos, quien visitó Chile y entregó su visión en torno a temas como la arquitectura francesa actual, la vivienda social, el manejo de áreas verdes urbanas, el patrimonio y la sustentabilidad.

En Arquitectura Joven presentamos a la dupla formada por Guillermo Hevia García y Nicolás Urzúa Soler, ambos arquitectos PUC de sólo 27 años.

Finalmente, en línea con uno de los focos definidos por la revista, presentamos los concursos de la Torre Antena de Santiago, el proyecto para el Edificio Rector Eduardo Morales M. de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Universidad Austral y el concurso desarrollado y dirigido por el grupo Arquitectura Caliente para proyectos de pregrado.

Throughout its 26 editions the editorial board of the magazine has had remarkable continuity. Raimundo Lira –a member from the start who had to interrupt his collaboration for personal reasons– has recently rejoined occupying the seat vacated by Mirene Elton, whom we thank for her valuable contribution during her time in this committee.

The first article in this issue delves into the life and work of Mario Pérez de Arce Lavín (1917-2010), respected architect and academic. His son and partner, Mario Pérez de Arce Antoncich explains his father’s work in light of his personality and as a result of a long intellectual process.

As for the works of our associates, we exceptionally chose three sporting infrastructure projects: the Peñalolén Velodrome, the National Stadium Aquatics Center and the Odesur Sports Complex. In corporate buildings we present the Resiter Office building, and in public buildings we present the Independencia Library in Santiago and the Pencahue City Hall building. In housing we publish the Pocuro-Andacollo building and the Mava house in Zapallar, among other works.

PRESENTACIÓN / presentation

A lo largo de sus 26 ediciones, el comité editorial de la revista se ha caracterizado por su continuidad. Raimundo Lira, quien participó desde un comienzo y por razones personales hace un tiempo interrumpió su colaboración, recientemente se reincorporó, ocupando la vacante dejada por Mirene Elton, a la que agradecemos su valioso aporte durante su paso por este comité.

In the international interview we spoke with Pablo Katz, vice president of the French Society of Architects, who visited Chile and offered his vision on issues such as the current state of French architecture, social housing, the management of urban green spaces, heritage and sustainability.

In Young Architecture we present the duo formed by Guillermo Hevia García and Nicolás Urzúa Soler, both 27-year-old architects from the Catholic University.

Finally, and in line with one focus defined by the magazine, we present the competitions for the Santiago Antenna Tower, the project for the Rector Eduardo Morales M. building at the School of Sciences, Universidad Austral and the contest developed and managed by the Arquitectura Caliente group for undergraduate projects.

Mario Pérez de Arce Lavín nace el 13 de junio de 1917. Su padre (Diego, abogado) fallece cuando Mario tiene solo cinco años, dejando a su esposa Sara y a sus tres hijos -Mario y dos hermanas- en precaria situación económica. Él estudia en el Colegio Mercedario de San Pedro Nolasco, del cual egresa con el máximo premio académico.

Entra a estudiar Ingeniería en la Universidad Católica, pero en segundo año su amigo Vicente Philippi Izquierdo lo convence de cambiarse a Arquitectura. Aquí lo espera un ambiente estimulante, además de nuevos y numerosos amigos como Emilio Duhart, Juan Echenique, Héctor Valdés, Patricio Schmidt, Fernando Castillo, Alberto Piwonka, Manuel Gutiérrez y, algo mayor, Sergio Larraín García Moreno, de quien sería primero ayudante en su curso y después colaborador, socio ocasional y amigo de toda la vida.

Tras cursar una beca de no mucho interés en Florida, EE.UU, donde vive de cerca el ambiente de guerra, vuelve como profesor a la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad Católica, siendo uno de los actores en la “quema del Vignola”, acto simbólico de ruptura de las nuevas generaciones con el academismo imperante en la docencia de la arquitectura. Los jóvenes comienzan a adherir con entusiasmo a los postulados del modernismo impulsados por la Bauhaus y el joven Le Corbusier.

Casado con Beatriz Antoncich, tiene cinco hijos, dos de ellos arquitectos, a los que se sumarían numerosos nietos, entre los cuales también se cuentan varios arquitectos.

Su pasión por la arquitectura lo mantiene activo profesionalmente y siempre comprometido con la docencia en la Universidad Católica. Su otra pasión, el paisaje, lo transformará en un excursionista constante, admirador del territorio, incansable crítico y, finalmente, impulsor de nuevas ideas para la ciudad y también para la formación de los nuevos arquitectos.

En 1983 recibe el Premio Nacional de Arquitectura y una década después es nombrado profesor emérito de su querida Escuela de Arquitectura PUC. Plenamente activo, muere el 2010 a los 93 años.

Formado en el rigor de los tratados neoclásicos, a lo largo de su vida conserva y respeta valores de ese modo de hacer arquitectura. Componer con equilibrio, como componía un pintor del Renacimiento. Con la mesura clásica, donde todas las partes se orquestan en un todo armónico.

“Emilio Duhart y yo trabajamos algún tiempo en la oficina de Alberto Chupo Cruz Eyzaguirre, el más riguroso autor de mansiones clásicas, principalmente francesas, que recurría a su colección de grabados del siglo XVII y XVIII. Nos parecía absurdo realizar esa arquitectura en el siglo XX, pero mucho después reconocimos que para nosotros había sido una buena experiencia de rigor, orden y cuidadoso detalle en las obras”, afirma. Y al enfrentar opciones suele repetir: “Chupo lo habría hecho así”. Será referente en su arquitectura posterior, abiertamente divergente de la Academia.

Si algo se ve bien, es porque está bien. La proporción, relación que se percibe entre las partes de un todo, es la armonía, donde cada parte cumple su papel en el todo. El “verse bien” en arquitectura tiene mucho que ver con un equilibrio detectado y descrito por los clásicos. Una columna debe tener un diámetro proporcional a su altura, su capitel proporcional al fuste, lo soportado por la columna también mantiene una proporción con esta, y así todo el edificio es el resultado de proporciones entre sus partes. Sin duda, haberse formado en la disciplina de las proporciones clásicas le permite a él y a la primera camada de arquitectos modernos abordar la modernidad con una disciplina y rigor propios de la Academia.

Esta formación explica también cómo esta generación se apoya en el MODULOR, la Nueva Norma redactada por Le Corbusier como reemplazo de la normativa académica. Esta vez, poniendo al hombre como principio y centro en lugar de una idea abstracta de la proporción.

Mario Pérez de Arce Lavín was born on June 13, 1917. His father Diego, a lawyer, passed away when Mario was only five years old, leaving his wife Sara and their three sons - Mario and two sisters - in a difficult financial situation. He studied at Colegio Mercedario San Pedro Nolasco graduating with the highest honors.

He enrolled in the engineering program at the Catholic University, but transferred to architecture in his sophomore year convinced by his friend Vicente Izquierdo Philippi. There he found a stimulating environment and many new friends such as Emilio Duhart, Juan Echenique, Héctor Valdés, Patricio Schmidt, Fernando Castillo, Alberto Piwonka, Manuel Gutiérrez and the somewhat older Sergio Larraín García Moreno, with whose class he would be a teacher assistant and later a collaborator, occasional partner and lifelong friend.

After completing an uneventful fellowship in Florida, USA, where he closely experienced the war atmosphere, he became professor at the School of Architecture at the Catholic University, and became one of the actors in the “burning of the Vignola”, one of the new generation’s symbolic break-up actions with the prevailing academicism in the teaching of architecture. The students began to enthusiastically adhere to the tenets of modernism promoted by the Bauhaus and a young Le Corbusier.

He married Beatriz Antoncich and fathered five children, two of them architects.

Numerous grandchildren came after; several of them architects today.

His passion for architecture kept him professionally active and permanently engaged in teaching at the Catholic University. His other passion, the landscape, transformed him into a constant hiker, an admirer of the land, a tireless critic and ultimately an advocate for new ideas for the city and for the education of new architects.

In 1983 he received the National Architecture Prize and a decade later he was appointed Professor Emeritus at his beloved School of Architecture at the Catholic University.

He died in 2010 while fully active, at the age of 93.

Academic Rigor

El Modulor es la Nueva Norma de Le Corbusier que se impone a la normativa académica reemplazando al Vignola./ The Modulor is the New Standard proposed

by Le Corbusier as a replacement for the academic regulations.

Formed in the rigor of the neoclassical treatises, throughout his life he preserved and respected the values of this way of making architecture: composing with the balance of a renaissance painter, with the classical restraint where all the parts are orchestrated into a harmonious whole.

“Emilio Duhart and I worked for some time at the office of Alberto Chupo Cruz Eyzaguirre, the most rigorous author of classical mansions, mainly French, and who resorted to his collection of seventeenth and eighteenth century engravings.

To us it seemed absurd to design this type of architecture in the twentieth century, but long after we recognized that it was a good experience of rigor, order and carefully detailed works”. When facing choices he usually repeated, “this is how Chupo would have done it”. It would later be a reference for his architecture, clearly divergent with the Academy.

If something looks good, it’s because it is good. Proportions - the relationship perceived between the parts of a whole - are harmony, wherein each part plays its role in the whole. The “looking good” in architecture has a lot to do with the balance detected and described by the classics. A column must have a diameter proportional to its height, its capital proportional to its shaft. The supported element also maintains a proportion with the column, and so the whole building is the result of proportions between its parts. Certainly, having been trained in the discipline of classical proportions allowed him and the first group of modern architects to address modernity with the discipline and rigor of the Academy.

This training also explains how this generation is based on the MODULOR, the New Standard proposed by Le Corbusier as a replacement for the academic regulations. This time, placing the human being as the principle and center, rather than an abstract idea of proportion.

Naturaleza y paisaje

Se aficiona a subir a la cordillera cuando es todavía una aventura. Desde lo alto logra una visión del territorio, del amado territorio. Geografía pura, paisaje puro.

Una sola bajada en esquíes de madera desde la cumbre de El Colorado premian un día completo de escalada y cansancio. Frecuentes son sus excursiones en tren al Cajón del Maipo lleno de jóvenes en busca de la magia de la montaña. Descubre los perdidos lagos del sur con otro incansable explorador, Emilio Duhart: su casa paterna en Cañete es punto de partida a remotos destinos.

El hombre de campo, abriendo acequias con una pala, le hace pensar en el encuentro dulce y amargo entre culturas antagónicas, la aborigen y la española.

La sencilla casa rural es para él una referencia permanente. Allí está todo en su forma elemental, simple y pura. Especialmente el parrón, que brinda sombra en el verano, frutos en el otoño y se desviste de su follaje para permitir el sol en invierno. Siempre quiso tener uno, y lo construyó en sus casas de calle El Vergel (1945), Oviedo (1954) y también en el Cerro San Luis (1980), y en todas el parrón fue núcleo durante los veranos. El parrón, entonces, es recurso frecuente en muchas de sus obras habitacionales.

El paisaje es un tema tan significativo para él que busca con afán la manera de introducir su estudio en la Escuela de Arquitectura. Establece un vínculo con la Universidad de Berkeley, California, cuya latitud y clima son simétricos con los de Chile central y sus paisajes, equivalentes. Con el apoyo en Esmée Cromie, hábil paisajista inglesa casada con el arquitecto Jaime Bellalta, intenta establecer la disciplina formalmente, lo que se hará realidad mucho más tarde a través del Postítulo de Arquitectura del Paisaje, en el que se formarán muchos profesionales hoy en pleno ejercicio (con los años el programa se canceló).

“La fealdad de Santiago se ha convertido en una opinión común. Los que la sostienen olvidan su maravilloso entorno geográfico”, escribe. Luego se refiere al árbol urbano, otra constante en sus preocupaciones: “La arborización rica y extensa mejoraría la calidad ambiental… pero además, a través de la generosa belleza de los árboles entregada a todo el mundo, elevaría la dignidad de los ciudadanos y estimularía su cariño por la ciudad”.

En su arquitectura el paisaje y el árbol siempre serán protagónicos. En su defensa del paisaje emprende épicas campañas, como la protección de los añosos álamos carolinos que acompañan el acceso a Santiago desde la ruta a Valparaíso. Y más importante, su defensa de las riberas del Mapocho como parque urbano.

El sentido de sus viajes

Viajero empedernido, nunca pierde la capacidad de sorprenderse. En sus habituales recorridos por Chile se comporta con la curiosidad de un turista, asomándose a todos los rincones y buscando en ellos lo desconocido y lo propio.

En 1947 conoce Cuzco y Machu Pichu. En 1952 asiste a un congreso en México. En ambos lugares, usando sus palabras, se reconoce en lo mestizo y lo colonial.

En Europa recorre con devoción los vestigios de la arquitectura del pasado. Los clásicos griegos en Paestum lo marcan. Se emociona con el Renacimiento en Italia, con el gótico y con la serenidad del románico. Admira la discreta solemnidad del neoclásico inglés y la capacidad de manejar grandes paisajes de Francia e Inglaterra a partir del siglo XVII. Obvio, el encuentro con la obra de Le Corbusier es un episodio inolvidable. Pero también están sus vivencias en lugares simples, ocultos y mágicos, que aportan la obra vernácula y llena de humanidad en todos los lugares que recorrió en América, Europa y Asia (“En Europa sentí amor por cada país”, declara).

Es invitado por el prestigioso MIT de Boston a impartir clases de taller. También recibe una invitación para desarrollar un curso en la Architectural Association de Londres.

Un viaje al parque Pumalín en la Patagonia, haciendo auto stop con dos de sus nietos, es quizá la última de sus aventuras. Para entonces tiene 90 años.

Nature and landscape He became fond of mountain climbing when it was still an adventure. From the hilltops he achieved a vision of the land, his beloved country: pure geography, pure landscape. A sole descent on wooden skis from the summit of El Colorado hill rewarded a full day of climbing and fatigue. In frequent excursions by train to the Maipo River canyon, with a numerous group of young people he searched for the magic of the mountain. He discovered hidden lakes in the south with another tireless explorer, Emilio Duhart: his father’s house in Cañete was the starting point for remote destinations.

The peasant, opening ditches with a shovel, made him think of the bittersweet encounter between the opposing cultures of the Native Americans and the Spanish.

The simple rural house is for him a permanent reference. Everything is present in its elemental, simple and pure form. Especially the grape arbor, providing shade in the summer, fruits in autumn and shedding its foliage to let the winter sun in. He always wanted to have one, so he built them in his houses on El Vergel Street (1945), Oviedo (1954) and also at Cerro San Luis (1980), and in all of them the arbor was the center of family life during the summer. The grape arbor is therefore a frequent element in many of his residential works.

The landscape became such a meaningful issue for him that he eagerly sought ways to introduce its study in the School of Architecture. He established a relationship with the University of Berkeley, California, whose latitude and climate are symmetrical with those in central Chile, and their landscapes are equivalent. With the support of Esmée Cromie, an English landscape designer married to architect Jaime Bellalta, he tried to formally establish the discipline, finally realized much later through the Landscape Architecture Postgraduate Degree, in which many currently practicing professionals were formed (the program was eventually canceled).

“The ugliness of Santiago has become a common opinion. Those who believe this forget its wonderful geographical location”, he writes. He then refers to the urban tree, another permanent concern: “A rich and extensive tree planting campaign would improve environmental quality ... while at the same time the

generous beauty of trees given to everyone would raise the dignity of citizens and encourage their affection for the city.”

In his architecture the landscape and trees will always be fundamental. In his defense of the landscape he undertakes epic crusades such as the protection of the elderly Carolinian poplars lining the access to Santiago from the Valparaiso highway, and more importantly, his defense of the banks of the Mapocho River as an urban park.

The meaning of his travels He was an avid traveler, always capable of wonderment. In his frequent travels in Chile he was as curious as a tourist, peeking and searching in every corner for the unknown and the familiar.

In 1947 he visited Cuzco and Machu Picchu. In 1952 he attended a conference in Mexico. In both places, using his own words, he recognized himself in both the mestizo and colonial cultures.

In Europe he traveled with devotion through the remains of the architecture of the past. He was marked by the Greek classics in Paestum. The Renaissance moved him in Italy, as well as the Gothic and the serenity of the Romanesque. He admired the discrete solemnity of English neoclassicism and the ability of France and England to manage large-scale landscapes in the 17th century.

The encounter with the work of Le Corbusier was obviously an unforgettable episode. But he also experienced the simple, hidden and magical places of the vernacular architecture filled with great humanity in all the places he visited in America, Europe and Asia (“In Europe I felt love for each country”, he says1).

He was invited by the prestigious MIT in Boston to lead a workshop. He also received an invitation to develop a course at the Architectural Association in London.

A trip to the Pumalín Park in Patagonia, hitchhiking with two of his grandchildren, was perhaps the last of his adventures. By then he was 90 years old.

Estructura y función El gótico es para él un testimonio histórico de rigor, de fe y también de lógica estructural. El gótico más refinado llega a transferir roles estructurales a los mismos vitrales y expresa en forma de nervios el rol estructural de las partes. Es la estructura la que, en definitiva, se hace cargo de la estética en las construcciones góticas. Esta idea le fascina. Admira a Félix Candela y Pier Luiggi Nervi, dos diseñadores de estructuras que transfirieron la sabiduría del gótico al lenguaje y tecnología modernos.

Si bien él no tiene oportunidad de desarrollar grandes edificios, hasta los más modestos elementos estructurales son dignificados en su arquitectura. La estructura se acusa siempre en fachadas y se expresa contribuyendo de esa forma a enriquecer la arquitectura. Un ejemplo elocuente es el edificio Nueva de Lyon (1967) con su sistema de muros estructurales.

Las circulaciones claras y jerarquizadas, iluminación, ventilación, la adecuación de los espacios a su función específica, en suma, la funcionalidad, es un aspecto clave al momento de proyectar. Asume con vivo interés incluso el diseño de un edificio de estacionamientos como el Sol de Chile, que proyecta con Sergio Larraín y Emilio Duhart en 1954, cuyas restricciones funcionales son máximas.

El sentido común

El “sentido común” es el principal mensaje que reciben sus alumnos durante los 40 años en que ejerce gratuitamente (como se usa entonces) la docencia en la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad Católica. Para él, es norma de vida y sin duda para muchos de sus alumnos es el núcleo de su enseñanza. No busca la novedad por la novedad, tentación permanente en el ejercicio de la arquitectura. El sentido común es la fórmula para poder extraer lo justo de la tradición, imaginación, cultura o del repertorio de modelos externos.

El sentido común es el tema central de su discurso al recibir el título de profesor emérito: “Quiero aprovechar esta ocasión para compartir una reflexión sobre un asunto que me ha perseguido desde hace tiempo y se me ha ido aclarando con los años, ayudándome en la comprensión de muchos problemas y en las decisiones que respecto a ellos he debido tomar. Se trata de lo que llamamos ‘sentido común’ (…) Facultad entroncada probablemente en el ancestral instinto de conservación y que permite entrever el bien, la verdad y la belleza por entre la maraña de la vida”.

Durante los duros momentos en que le corresponde asumir el decanato de la Escuela de Arquitectura, su apego al sentido común le permite sostener posiciones y generar acogida entre personas tan diversas como las que pululan en el Consejo Superior de la Universidad en esos tiempos de radicalización extrema. Allí se enfrentan Jaime Guzmán y Hernán Larraín con José Antonio Garretón, Fernando Castillo, su amigo y rector, y el Cardenal Silva Henríquez, por citar a algunos.

Hay posiciones irreconciliables que llegan a generan la escisión de la Escuela en dos facciones rivales. Puede conversar con todos porque su mansedumbre y su sentido común resultan más fuertes que las consignas en combate.

Renuncia a su breve decanato luego de que el gobierno militar designa al almirante Jorge Swett como rector y se suceden múltiples acciones que no comparte. Swett había sido su “cliente” en el proyecto de la Escuela Naval y habían hecho una buena amistad, pero ahora defienden posiciones antagónicas.

Hasta hoy escucho reconocimientos a su figura de parte de quienes fueron sus contrarios.

Su larga trayectoria como profesor le valen la admiración de muchas generaciones de arquitectos. Siempre a cargo del taller de tercer año, sabe introducir a sus alumnos en una equilibrada experiencia de pasión y razón.

Hombre manso, quiere que su obra y su mensaje estén marcados por el “buen sentido”. No hay protesta en su obra, sino propuesta. Esta actitud se traduce en un espíritu siempre positivo, imaginando una realidad mejor y descubriendo valores hasta en lo más insignificante.

Structure and function The Gothic is for him a historical testimony of rigor, faith and structural logic as well. The finest gothic assigns structural roles to the stained glass windows that express in the mullions the structural role of the parts. Ultimately, in gothic buildings it is the structure that is responsible for the aesthetics. This idea fascinated him.

He admired Félix Candela and Pier Luiggi Nervi, two structural designers who translated the wisdom of the Gothic into modern language and technology.

Although he didn’t have the opportunity to develop large buildings, even the smallest structural elements were dignified in his architecture. The structure is always present and revealed in the façades, thus contributing to the enrichment of architecture. A clear example is the Nueva de Lyon Building (1967) with its system of structural walls.

Clear and hierarchical circulations, lighting, ventilation, the appropriateness of spaces to their specific functions, in short, functionality is the key aspect while designing. He undertakes with great interest even the design of a parking building such as Sol de Chile, designed with Sergio Larraín and Emilio Duhart in 1954, where functional constraints were extreme.

Common sense “Common sense” is the main message received by students during the 40 years of volunteer teaching (as was customary then) at the School of Architecture of the Catholic University. For him, it is a rule of life, and certainly for many students it is the core of his teaching. He does not seek novelty for novelty’s sake, a permanent temptation in the practice of architecture. Common sense is the formula to extract what is proper from tradition, imagination, culture or the repertoire of external models.

Common sense is the central theme of his speech upon receiving the title of Professor Emeritus: “I want to take this opportunity to share my thoughts on

an issue that has haunted me for some time and has become more clear over the years, helping in the understanding of many issues and the decisions I have had to make concerning them. It is what we call ‘common sense’ (...) a capacity probably rooted in the ancestral instinct for survival that allows a glimpse of goodness, truth and beauty through the tangle of life.”

During the difficult period when he had to undertake the deanship of the School of Architecture, his dedication to common sense allowed him to sustain positions and generate acceptance among people as diverse as those close to the Superior Council of the University in those times of extreme radicalization. Jaime Guzmán and Hernán Larraín engaged in confrontation with José Antonio Garretón, Fernando Castillo - his friend and university rector - and Cardinal Silva Henríquez, to name a few. Irreconcilable positions generated the division of the School into two rival factions. He was able to talk to everyone because his modesty and common sense were stronger than the conflicting slogans.

He resigned his brief deanship after the military government designated Admiral Jorge Swett as rector and after many decisions he did not agree with. Swett had been his “client” in the project for the Naval Academy and they had become good friends, however they now stood on opposite grounds.

To this day I hear acknowledgments regarding his person from those who were his adversaries.

His long career as a teacher made him worthy of the admiration of many generations of architects. Always in charge of the third year workshop, he knew how to introduce students to a balanced experience of passion and reason.

A humble man, he wanted his work and his message to be marked by “good sense”. His work is not to be a protest but a proposal. This attitude resulted in a permanent positive spirit, imagining a better reality and discovering value in the most insignificant places.

Faith made into architecture

Profundamente católico, siente una responsabilidad hacia los desposeídos y se vincula y compromete con movimientos de iglesia a los cuales entrega importante parte de su vida.

Una íntima colaboración con la Fundación Cristo Vive, liderada por la religiosa alemana Karoline Mayer, culmina con el proyecto para una escuela de oficios. Con la misma institución proyecta viviendas, parroquias y recintos de equipamiento para comunidades de muy bajos recursos. Sus principios de funcionalidad y de lealtad con la estructura son puestos a prueba con el rigor de las condiciones económicas.

Por encima de las limitaciones de una arquitectura concebida con recursos mínimos, siempre tiene presente la belleza y busca con afán las maneras de hacerla llegar también a los más pobres. Es un convencido de que hay una necesidad espiritual de belleza tan respetable, vital y urgente como las necesidades básicas de techo, pan y abrigo.

Es notable cómo hasta hoy, pasados tres o cuatro decenios, en la Iglesia de Cristo Vive se sigue rindiendo homenaje a su arquitecto, a quien le guardan afecto y respeto.

Otra institución con la cual se compromete vivamente, CCN (Cristianos para la Ciudad Nueva), le solicita un proyecto para la adecuación de las viejas bodegas de la antigua Viña Conchalí como un lugar de eventos. Nuevamente, con mucha economía transforma el conjunto ruinoso obteniendo bellos espacios en sus patios, corredores y recintos interiores.

Su compromiso con una iglesia renovada lo mueven a proponer formas nuevas para la Iglesia del Verbo Divino: la forma circular, que expresa literalmente el sentido de Iglesia entendido como la reunión de fieles en torno a Jesucristo, representado por el sacerdote oficiante.

As a devout Catholic, he felt a responsibility towards the dispossessed. He committed himself to participation in church movements to which he dedicated an important part of his life.

A very close collaboration with the Cristo Vive foundation - led by Karoline Mayer, a German nun - resulted in a project for a trade school. With the same institution he planned homes, parishes and facilities venues for very low-income communities. His principles of functionality and loyalty to structure were put to the test with the rigor of financial conditions.

Beyond the limitations of architecture designed with minimal resources, beauty was always present in his mind and he eagerly sought ways to make it reach the poorest communities. He was convinced there is a spiritual need for beauty as respectable, vital and urgent as the basic needs for roof, bread and shelter.

It is remarkable how even today after three or four decades, those attending the church of Cristo Vive are still paying tribute to its architect and remembering him with affection and respect.

Another institution he strongly committed to, the CCN (Christians for the New City), asked for a project to convert the cellars of the old Conchalí Vineyard into a venue for events. Again, with scarce means he transformed the dilapidated complex attaining beautiful spaces in its patios, corridors and interior premises.

His commitment to a renewed church inspired him to propose new forms for the Church of the Divine Word: a circular shape that literally expressed the meaning of the Church understood as the faithful meeting around Jesus Christ, represented by the officiating priest.

El invitado a participar en el concurso es Sergio Larraín García-Moreno, quien a su vez invita a Emilio Duhart, Alberto Piwonka y Mario Pérez de Arce al equipo. Tras ganar el primer lugar, comienza inmediatamente el trabajo del proyecto definitivo, que se desarrolla conservando los lineamientos generales del anteproyecto, con el estadio puesto al oriente del conjunto, con un patio abierto hacia el estadio, el oriente y la magnífica vista a la cordillera.

El proyecto genera una sólida relación entre los arquitectos y las autoridades del colegio, la cual se prolonga por medio siglo, cada vez con encargos para etapas nuevas o para acondicionamiento de antiguas unidades.

Con la muerte o retiro de sus socios originales, Sergio Larraín G-M y Emilio Duhart, Mario Pérez de Arce queda a cargo de los pabellones que completan el conjunto, en colaboración con Alberto Piwonka, hasta su muerte. Los últimos los desarrolla con su oficina particular.

Sergio Larraín García-Moreno was invited to participate in the competition, and later invited Emilio Duhart, Alberto Piwonka and Mario Pérez de Arce into the team. After obtaining the first place, work for the final project began immediately, retaining the general guidelines of the initial proposal, with the stadium placed to the east of the complex and a courtyard open towards the stadium, the east and the magnificent views of the Andes Mountains.

The project established a strong relationship between the architects and the school authorities, which extended for half a century, each time with commissions for new stages or the conditioning of old units.

With the death or retirement of his original partners, Sergio Larraín G-M and Emilio Duhart, Mario Pérez de Arce remained in charge of the pavilions that completed the complex, in collaboration with Alberto Piwonka until his death.

Este importante concurso tuvo dos etapas. En la primera se seleccionan dos finalistas y en la segunda, con proyectos mucho más acabados, se determina al ganador.

Mario Pérez de Arce se presenta a la primera etapa con Hugo Errázuriz y Jaime Besa. Con otro equipo de arquitectos de la Universidad Católica pactan previamente que si uno de ellos es seleccionado para la segunda etapa, el otro lo apoyará sumando a todos sus miembros al equipo favorecido, quedando todos comprometidos como profesionales en caso de finalmente ganar.

El equipo de Pérez de Arce, Errázuriz y Besa obtiene el primer lugar. Se suman en consecuencia los arquitectos Hugo Gaggiero, Fernando Castillo, Sergio Larraín G-M, Arturo Urzúa, Ismael Echeverría, Germán Brandes y Hernán Labarca. Pero el voluminoso grupo no tarda en desgranarse, y muchos de sus integrantes optan por retirarse. Quedan Jaime Besa, quien luego también se retira, Hugo Errázuriz, Germán Brandes, Arturo Urzúa y Hugo Gaggiero. En definitiva, el único arquitecto del numeroso equipo comprometido originalmente es Mario Pérez de Arce Lavín.

El proyecto, con sus patios abiertos al mar y sus volúmenes fuertes y simples, se ha identificado con su rol y ha sido cuidadosamente conservado y mantenido, generándose en torno a él un sentido de especial afecto. Lamentablemente, se adiciona posteriormente un edificio para la piscina cubierta que obstruye la notable perspectiva del corredor principal, con su remate original en el mar.

This important competition had two stages. In the first, two finalists were selected and in the second - with more detailed projects - the winner was determined.

Mario Pérez de Arce participated in the first stage with Hugo Errázuriz and Jaime Besa. They previously agreed with another team of architects from the Catholic University, that if one of them was selected for the second stage, the other team would add its members to the favored one, becoming all engaged as professionals should one of the teams eventually win.

The Pérez de Arce, Errázuriz and Besa team won first place. Architects Hugo Gaggero, Fernando Castillo, Sergio Larraín G-M, Arturo Urzúa, Ismael Echeverría, Germán Brandes and Hernán Labarca were added accordingly to the team. But the large group soon broke down, and many of its members chose to retire.

This left Jaime Besa - who also retired later - Hugo Errázuriz, Germán Brandes, Arturo Urzúa and Hugo Gaggero. Finally, the only architect from the large original committed team was Mario Pérez de Arce Lavín.

The project, with its courtyards open to the sea and strong, simple volumes, has been attributed to his role and has been carefully preserved and maintained, generating a sense of special affection. Unfortunately, a building for the indoor pool was subsequently added, obstructing the remarkable perspective of the main corridor, with its original culmination in the ocean.

Habitar un nuevo Chile

Entre los proyectos que desarrolla puede distinguirse un anhelo de reformular la forma de vivir, con economía pero adecuándola al goce de un clima y un paisaje particulares y también a la idiosincrasia local.

Hay valores que aparecen una y otra vez en sus proyectos: el protagonismo de un parrón como espacio intermedio en la vivienda, aludiendo a la casa campesina tradicional de la zona central del país, presente en varias de sus viviendas. En otros casos propone un simple espacio exterior en torno al que se organiza la casa, como ocurre en los distintos modelos del conjunto Salar del Carmen. De forma parecida proyecta lo mismo para su casa de Cachagua, separando físicamente las zonas de estar y comer de los dormitorios en torno a un patio central descubierto y asoleado, obligando a los ocupantes a circular y vivir el espacio exterior con su maravillosa vista. A pesar de la sorpresa entre sus amigos y familiares, la solución sigue vigente después de más de 40 años.

La búsqueda de una densidad compatible con una buena calidad de vida es otro punto insoslayable. Está explorada al máximo en la población Salar del Carmen, y de una forma fina y novedosa en las casas de calle Presidente Riesco, donde gracias a la pendiente logra acceder a una vivienda superior por la calle de arriba y por la calle inferior a la vivienda situada debajo.

En dos conjuntos proyectados sucesivamente en calle Apoquindo formula una casa continua de solo 5 m de frente y tres niveles, articulándolos de forma de no caer en la monotonía repetitiva. En un conjunto de La Dehesa, la apuesta es por la disposición de las unidades permitiendo para cada una un jardín independiente de buen tamaño.

Estas ideas son mucho más relevantes que la exploración de novedades formales.

De hecho, en general las soluciones suelen adoptar elementos tan tradicionales como las techumbres inclinadas, a veces incluso con teja de arcilla aludiendo a esa casa campesina tradicional que siempre le sirve de referencia.

Among the projects he developed we can identify a desire to rethink the way we live: with economy of means, although incorporating the enjoyment of a particular climate and landscape as well as the local idiosyncrasies.

Some attributes appear again and again in his projects: the role of the grape arbor as an intermediate space in the house, alluding to the traditional peasant house of the Chilean central region, present in several of his houses. In other cases he proposed a simple exterior space around which the house is organized, as in the various housing types for the Salar del Carmen complex. He designed a similar solution for his own house in Cachagua, physically separating the living and dining areas from the bedrooms with an open and sunny central courtyard, compelling the occupants to occupy and live in this exterior space with its wonderful views.

Despite the surprise among his friends and family, the solution remains valid after more than 40 years.

The search for a density compatible with a good quality of life is another unavoidable topic. It is explored to the fullest in the Salar del Carmen complex, and with a delicate and novel way in the houses on Presidente Riesco Street, where, thanks to the sloped site he devises access to the upper homes through a higher street and to the housing below by means of a lower one.

In two complexes designed in tandem on Apoquindo Street he proposed row houses barely 5 meters wide and with three levels, articulating these so as not to fall into repetitive monotony. In the complex at La Dehesa, the arrangement of the units allowed for an independent good-sized garden for each one.

These ideas are much more important than the exploration of formal novelties.

In fact, the solutions generally tend to adopt traditional elements such as sloped roofs and sometimes even clay-roofing tiles alluding to the traditional peasant house that served as a permanent reference.

Quebrada Salar del Carmen, Antofagasta Viviendas, Parvulario, Centro Social y Centro Asistencial Corvi 60.000 m² 1961

Concurso convocado por la Corporación de la Vivienda, CORVI, a fin de construir un nuevo barrio habitacional para la ciudad de Antofagasta en una pampa deshabitada contigua.

Al concurso se presentan Jaime Besa Zañartu y Mario Pérez de Arce Lavín, socios en ese momento, y obtienen el primer premio con un proyecto distinto a lo habitual. La vivienda se ajusta al singular medioambiente desértico: se organiza en torno a un patio interior protegido por una pérgola sombreada. Los recintos interiores se conectan y los techos son planos considerando la inexistencia de lluvias. Las casas se articulan combinando de diferentes formas sus componentes, produciendo una variedad urbana no conocida en proyectos de vivienda social. Los espacios públicos se completan con sombreaderos y muy pocos árboles acorde a la dificultad de hacerlos crecer en ese riguroso ambiente.

Con el tiempo, el conjunto sufre innumerables transformaciones, algunas atractivas y valoradas por el arquitecto durante una visita hecha a Antofagasta muchos años después.

CORVI, the governmental Housing Corporation organized the competition to build a new residential neighborhood for the city of Antofagasta in an adjacent uninhabited plain.

Jaime Besa Zañartu and Mario Pérez de Arce Lavín, partners at the time, participated in the competition and obtained the first prize with an unusual project. The housing units fit the unique desert environment: they are organized around a central courtyard sheltered by a shaded trellis. The indoor rooms are connected and the roofs are flat reflecting the scarcity of rainfall. The houses are articulated in different ways by combining their components, producing an urban variety unseen in low-income housing projects. Shading trellises and very few trees are used to configure the public spaces, considering the difficulty of growth in the harsh environment.

In time, the complex has withstood many transformations, some attractive and appreciated by the architect during a visit to Antofagasta many years later.

Su huella en concursos El sistema de concursos de arquitectura goza de prestigio durante buena parte del siglo XX. Gracias a él, son seleccionados buenos jóvenes arquitectos cuyas soluciones vienen a refrescar el ambiente de la arquitectura.

Con su grupo de colegas es un decidido partidario del sistema y partícipe habitual en las principales competencias. Con espíritu generoso, a sabiendas de que un concurso de arquitectura deja un solo ganador y muchos perdedores, una y otra vez vuelve a organizar equipos para hacer frente a cada nueva convocatoria. A lo largo de su vida participa en más de 50 concursos, ganando varios de gran importancia y que fueron construidos (ver recuadros).

En 1952 participa con un equipo en el concurso para la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Chile, en el que se enfrenta a soluciones tradicionalistas.

Mucho se comenta de esta contienda con la que se abre un nuevo tiempo para la arquitectura. Obtiene el segundo premio, resultando vencedor el arquitecto Juan Martínez con un proyecto de corte clásico aun cuando desprendido de toda ornamentación.

Durante 1972 participa en un concurso para el Centro Pompidou en París. Al año siguiente gana un concurso para una nueva torre en la Remodelación San Borja, pero sobreviene el golpe militar y el contrato para su construcción se anula. En 1978 se impone en el concurso privado para la sede del Banco Unido de Fomento.

Al desaparecer esta institución, el edificio es terminado por el Estado y asignado al Poder Judicial, rol que conserva hasta hoy. El edificio concebido como una torre, se interconecta con las edificaciones circundantes por intermedio de una placa de cinco niveles.

En 1982 reincide presentándose al concurso para el Parque La Villete, también en París, con una propuesta que incluye la plantación de especies chilenas. No recibe premio (se presentan sobre 500 proyectos), pero es publicada.

En 1988 gana el concurso de la piscina cubierta para el Estadio Español de Las Condes, en cuya autoría tiene importancia la mano de Teodoro Fernández, por esa época asociado a la oficina. El proyecto -que se construye- consulta una piscina construida sobre nivel de terreno, abierta en grandes vidrieras al paisaje circundante y al aporte térmico del sol del norte. El recinto resultante es alegre y luminoso, y además se integra al estadio en forma amable con sus fachadas transparentes que contrastan con otras construcciones deportivas anteriores.

Como director de concursos trabaja arduamente en una compleja convocatoria para la ampliación del Congreso Nacional y, posteriormente, en el concurso para el parque más importante ejecutado hasta ese momento en la ciudad: el Parque Araucano. Considera que la elaboración de bases es una primera intervención arquitectónica en la solución, y pone sus mejores esfuerzos en la tarea.

Algunos le dejan un dejo amargo, como el anteproyecto para el memorial del Padre Hurtado, que desarrolla con un lenguaje de recursos sencillos y casi pobres en sintonía con el personaje, pero siente no haber sido comprendido (resultó segundo).

Gran interés revisten sus propuestas para el Aula Magna PUC, para la Plaza Baquedano (tercer premio) y para la Plaza de la Ciudadanía (recompensa), proyecto en el que excluye el hundimiento de la Alameda como proponen las bases.

His mark in competitions Architectural competitions remained a prestigious system during much of the twentieth century. Thanks to it, talented young architects are selected with solutions that refresh the architectural landscape.

With his group of colleagues he became a strong supporter of the system and a frequent participant in the major competitions. With a generous spirit, knowing that an architectural competition has only one winner and many losers, over and over again he organized teams to face each new invitation. Throughout his life he was involved in more than 50 competitions, winning several very important ones that were subsequently built (see boxes).

In 1952, he participated with a team in the competition for the School of Medicine at the University of Chile, in which he encountered proposals of a more traditional nature. Much has been said of this competition, which opened a new era for Chilean architecture. He obtained the second prize whereas architect Juan Martínez won first prize with a project of classical features even if devoid of ornamentation.

In 1972 he participated in a competition for the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The following year he won a contest for a new tower in the San Borja Complex, but the military coup ensued and the contract for its construction was canceled. In 1978 he won a private competition for the headquarters of the Banco Unido de Fomento. Upon the disappearance of the institution, the building was finished by the state and assigned to the judiciary, a function it serves to this day. The building was designed as a tower connected to the surrounding constructions by means of a five-story base.

In 1982 he participated once more in a competition for the La Villette Park,

also in Paris, with a proposal that included the planting of Chilean species. He received no award (over 500 projects were presented), however his proposal was published.

In 1988 he won the competition for the indoor pool of the Spanish Stadium of Las Condes, in whose authorship Teodoro Fernández, at the time associated with the office, played an important role. The project - which was later built – proposed a swimming pool at ground level, open to the surrounding landscape and to the warmth of the northern sun by means of large picture windows. The resulting complex is cheerful and bright, and combined to the stadium in a friendly way with transparent façades in contrast with previous sports facilities.

He worked very hard as director of competitions in a complicated tender for the expansion of the National Congress and later in the competition for the most important urban park at the time, Araucano Park. He considered that the development of the tender rules was the first architectural intervention towards a solution, and he put his best efforts into the task.

Some left a bitter aftertaste, such as the design for the memorial of Father Alberto Hurtado, which he developed with a language of simple and meager resources in tune with the character. However he felt he was misunderstood (he came in second).

His proposals for the Aula Magna at the Catholic University, Baquedano Square (third prize) and the Citizens Square (reward) were of great value, the last one a project that did not include the Alameda Avenue underpass as suggested by the tender rules.

Trabajo en equipo Su larga trayectoria en la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad Católica, primero como colaborador de Sergio Larraín G-M, después como profesor, como director y como decano en un corto período, fue un ejercicio permanente de trabajo en equipo.

Fue reconocida su capacidad de conciliar posiciones y de originar un clima de eficiente colaboración entre los integrantes del equipo.

Durante su vida profesional forma múltiples asociaciones con diferentes arquitectos por períodos cortos o simplemente para proyectos específicos. Al inicio de su vida profesional trabaja esporádicamente asociado a Sergio Larraín G-M y Emilio Duhart (Edificio de la Caja bancaria de Pensiones, Edificio Sol de Chile). Su primer socio estable es Jaime Besa Zañartu, quien sale del país para asumir un cargo en el Banco Mundial con sede en Washington. Lo sigue Hugo Errázuriz Echenique. También hubo colaboraciones con Germán Brandes, Hugo Gaggiero y Arturo Urzúa, Jorge Eguiguren y Enrique Concha Gana, y con Renato Parada en proyectos relacionados con la Universidad Católica.

Después de 1968 consolida una sociedad con quien escribe estas líneas y con Teo Fernández durante un período.

Espíritu público El actuar de Pérez de Arce Lavín está usualmente animado por un espíritu de búsqueda del bien público, a veces oponiéndose a sus mismos clientes. Es el caso del Edificio de La Merced, proyecto encomendado por la Orden de la Merced.

Propone un edificio de solo ocho pisos, la altura tradicional del centro, incluso recogiendo los dos últimos con el propósito de no atentar volumétricamente con la silueta de la vieja basílica. Muchos no entienden por qué no proyecta una gran torre, permitida por las normas locales del momento. Pero él sostiene que la 48

conservación del antiguo claustro, la armonía de altura con el centro tradicional y la continuación de la red de pasajes interiores por las manzanas, son más importantes que perseguir el máximo rendimiento comercial por m2 construido.

Movido por su apego al paisaje, por el amor a Santiago y por su propio optimismo y espíritu público, en la última etapa de su vida emprende algunas iniciativas que transforma en propuestas concretas para la ciudad. Desde antiguo visualiza el cauce urbano del río Mapocho como una oportunidad de un parque lineal por sus bordes.

En los últimos años del 2000, ve amenazado este sueño por el discutido proyecto para una costanera al norte del río, que propone destinar el terreno conquistado a la caja, una vez más para obras viales como se ha venido haciendo por años.

Como reacción al polémico proyecto, que se discute acaloradamente en las aulas y en la prensa, emprende el estudio de una alternativa, con un recorrido distinto, salvando así el destino de parque urbano para las riberas del río.

El recorrido propuesto, desplazado hacia el norte del río, propone además una acción renovadora en el barrio Recoleta, poniendo en valor su cercanía con el centro y su patrimonio edificado.

Logra estructurar un proyecto alternativo que obtiene apoyo de la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad Católica y también del Colegio de Arquitectos y es presentado a las autoridades. Aunque no es acogido, contribuye a generar mitigaciones importantes en el proyecto oficial, que es el que finalmente se ejecuta.

Sin embargo, decide insistir e invertir sus últimos años en estructurar esta idea de un parque continuo a lo largo de todo el río Mapocho en su trayecto urbano.

No por casualidad elige terminar su vida abocado a un proyecto transformador del paisaje de su amado Santiago. El Parque del Mapocho tendrá un rol integrador en una ciudad tremendamente estratificada y dividida.

Teamwork His long career at the School of Architecture of the Catholic University, first as an associate of Sergio Larraín G-M, and later as a teacher, director and dean for a short period, was an ongoing exercise in teamwork.

He was acknowledged for his ability to reconcile positions and create an atmosphere of efficient collaboration among team members.

During his professional life he created multiple partnerships with different architects for short periods of time or for specific projects. Early in his professional life he occasionally worked associated with Sergio Larraín G-M and Emilio Duhart (Pension Fund Building, Sol de Chile Building). His first stable partner was Jaime Besa Zañartu, who left the country to take a position at the World Bank in Washington.

Hugo Errázuriz Echenique came next. There was also collaboration with Germán Brandes, Hugo Gaggero and Arturo Urzúa, Jorge Eguiguren and Enrique Concha Gana, and with Renato Parada in projects related to the Catholic University.

After 1968, he consolidated a partnership with the writer of these lines and with Teo Fernández for a period.

Public Spirit A spirit of seeking the public good usually animated the actions of Pérez de Arce Lavín, sometimes in opposition to his own clients. Such is the case of the La Merced Building, a project commissioned by the Order of Mercy. He proposed a building with only eight stories, the traditional height of the city center, even setting back the last two in order not to interfere volumetrically with the silhouette of the old basilica. Many did not understand why he had not designed a tall tower as allowed by the local regulations of the time. But he argued that the preservation of the ancient cloister, the harmony with the traditional city center height and

the continuation of the network of interior alleys of the city blocks were more important than pursuing the maximum commercial yield per square meter built.

Moved by his affection for the landscape, the love for Santiago and his own optimism and public spirit, in the last stage of his life he embraced some initiatives and transformed them into concrete proposals for the city. From early on he visualized the Mapocho River urban riverbed as an opportunity for a linear riverside park.

In the late 2000, this dream was threatened by the controversial project for a riverside highway to the north of the river, which proposed to use the land reclaimed from the riverbed once again for road works as had been done for years.

In reaction to the controversial project, which was hotly debated in classrooms and in the press, he undertook the study of an alternative with a different route, preserving the riverbank for a future urban park.

The proposed route, moved to the north of the river, also planned a renewal of the Recoleta neighborhood, recognizing the value of its proximity to the city center and its built heritage.

He managed to structure an alternative project that obtained support from the School of Architecture of the Catholic University and the Association of Architects and that was presented to the authorities. Although it was not accepted, it contributed to the creation of important mitigations in the official project, which was finally executed. However he chose to insist and invest his last years in structuring the idea of a continuous park along the full urban course of the Mapocho River.

Not coincidentally he chose to end his life dedicated to a project transformative of the landscape of his beloved Santiago. The Mapocho Park will eventually have an integrating role in a tremendously stratified and divided city.

Víctima de un cáncer irreparable y ante la decisión de someterse a una cirugía compleja -más considerando su edad-, asume el riesgo: “Necesito terminar mi tarea”, dice. Casi muere en el trance, pero se recupera y logra armar su proyecto con ayuda de jóvenes arquitectos de su Escuela. La propuesta es presentada en una clase magistral y poco después, declarando terminada su labor, se entrega a la muerte.

Su propuesta es la única que adquiere el rango de “proyecto Bicentenario”, siendo adoptada como tal por el gobierno del Presidente Sebastián Piñera.

Con una actitud crítica pero propositiva permanente, pone por escrito sus pareceres.

Llena libretas con textos, tanto publicados en la prensa como inéditos.

Formalmente colabora en dos libros alusivos al paisaje. El primero de ellos, del cual es coautor junto a Marta Viveros y a Patricio Gross, se titula Santiago, Espacio Urbano y Paisaje. En el segundo, El Mapocho -dirigido por Diego Matte, actual director del Museo Histórico-, participa en la redacción de un capítulo.

Hay algunos discursos que cobran un valor testamentario, elaborados con cuidado y revisados y corregidos muchas veces. Quizás el más importante es el que lee durante la ceremonia en que es nombrado profesor emérito de la Pontificia Universidad Católica, El libro Mario Pérez de Arce Lavín, parte de una colección dedicada a arquitectos notables ex alumnos de la Universidad Católica, es encomendado a León Rodríguez, ayudante de su curso de Taller de arquitectura por largos años, quien dedica largas horas de conversación y trabajo con su entrevistado.

Algunos de sus proyectos también están respaldados por escritos. Son de interés los que apoyan sus proyectos teóricos para una alternativa de la avenida Costanera Norte y para el parque a lo largo del Mapocho.

En todos sus textos se advierte una intención docente, son como prolongaciones de su actividad como profesor.

En sus últimos años asume con pasión el estudio de temas trascendentales y filosóficos. Lo hace con toda la seriedad y rigor y al mismo tiempo se vincula a pensadores con quienes discute en busca de grandes verdades. Deja un cuadernillo titulado “Mi Búsqueda”, con la versión final de sus pensamientos, que distribuye entre sus más cercanos.

Estas reflexiones filosóficas establecen una coherencia entre la búsqueda del bien, de la belleza en la obra arquitectónica y artística y la búsqueda de la armonía suprema del Creador.

Juntos participaron en la creación del curso de postítulo de Arquitectura del Paisaje en la universidad, del que fue alumno y luego profesor hasta la extinción del programa. Es autor de “Josué Smith Solar, un arquitecto del 900” (Ediciones ARQ, 1993) y “Smith Solar & Smith Miller” (Ed. Finis Terrae, 2011). Hoy comparte su estudio con su hijo Mario Pérez de Arce Ovalle.

Victim of irremediable cancer and contemplating the decision to undergo complex surgery – even more so considering his age - he took the risk: “I need to finish my homework”, he said. He almost died in the trance, but recovered and managed to assemble his project with the help of young architects of his School. The project was presented in a master class and soon, after declaring his work completed, he embraced death.

His proposal is the only one that acquired the status of “Bicentennial project”, being adopted as such by the government of President Sebastián Piñera.

Publications and Texts With a critical but permanently proactive attitude, he put his views in writing.

He filled notebooks with texts both published and unpublished.

He formally collaborated in two books referring to the landscape. The first, which he co-authored with Marta Viveros and Patricio Gross, is entitled Santiago, Urban Space and Landscape. In the second, The Mapocho River - by Diego Matte, current director of the Historical Museum – he participated in the drafting of a chapter.

Some speeches have acquired a testamentary value, carefully prepared, reviewed and edited many times. Perhaps the most important is the one he read at the ceremony in which he was named Professor Emeritus of the Catholic University.

The book Mario Pérez de Arce Lavín, part of a collection dedicated to notable architects alumni of the Catholic University, was commissioned to León Rodríguez, assistant teacher in his architecture workshop for many years, and who spent long hours of conversation and work with his subject.

Some of his projects are also backed by written texts. Those of interest are the ones that support his theoretical projects for an alternative North Riverside Highway and the park along the Mapocho River.

An educational intent is evident in all his writings; they are extensions of his activity as professor.

He passionately dedicated his final years to the study of transcendental and philosophical themes. He did this with all seriousness and rigor while at the same time communicating with thinkers with whom he discussed in search for the great truths. He left a booklet entitled “My Search” with the final version of his thoughts, which he distributed among his closest.

These philosophical reflections establish a consistency between the search for goodness, for beauty in architectural and artistic work and the pursuit of the supreme harmony of the Creator.

Una sola plataforma clara y rotunda que se levanta al oriente, con la cordillera configurando el paisaje principal para el recinto deportivo. Una cubierta simple, constructivamente resistente y duradera que visualmente no se apoya en fachadas perimetrales a fin de mantener permeable el volumen.

La forma del terreno permite dar solución a las graderías en taludes pre-existentes, apareciendo la cubierta como una nube más del paisaje. Los revestimientos del exterior se diseñaron con patrones de microperforaciones que evocan movimiento y fluidez. Producen juegos de luces y sombras que le entregan al edificio un carácter recreativo y lúdico, además que lo integran al parque donde está emplazado. El diseño busca eficiencia y economías.

La estructura se soluciona en perfiles de acero que conforman una tenso estructura con marcos articulados que salvan las grandes luces. Los cerramientos perimetrales son cierros metálicos que facilitan incorporación de luz natural y ventilación como condición de diseño. Las dependencias de servicios y de deportistas se concentran en un edificio único de hormigón visto que está incorporado a los niveles del terreno.

En la elección de los materiales fue relevante la durabilidad y la mantención. Se optó por especificaciones de alta resistencia al uso y el clima interior.

A single strong and clear platform rises to the east, with the mountain setting the main landscape for the sports arena. A simple roof, of durable and long-lasting construction, which doesn’t rely visually on perimeter walls and therefore maintains a permeable volume.

The shape of the site allows the placement of the grandstands on pre existing slopes, making the roof appear as another cloud in the landscape. The exterior cladding was designed with micro perforated patterns that evoke movement and fluidity. They generate a game of light and shadows that endow the building with a recreational and playful character that integrates into the park where it is located. The design seeks efficiency and savings.

The structure is based on steel profiles that form a tensile structure with articulated frames spanning the large sections.

The perimeter walls are metal enclosures that enable the entry of natural light and ventilation as a design condition. The ancillary service units and athletes’ premises are concentrated in a single concrete building set into the ground.

Durability and maintenance were the relevant criteria for the choice of materials, specifying high resistance to wear and the indoor climate.

Las superficies del agua de las piscinas son el centro del proyecto ubicado en el Estadio Nacional en Ñuñoa. Avanzan para definir los accesos y ordenan el total. Se abren al oriente y a la vista, se cierran al poniente y al sol.

The water surfaces of the swimming pools are the center of the project located at the National Stadium in Ñuñoa. They move forward to define the entrances and organize the full design. They open up to the east and the views; they close off to the west and the sun.

El partido se hace transparente al entorno y al parque. Las graderías se abalconan sobre el agua y los árboles como un muro de apoyo guardando los servicios en el interior.

La cubierta es el elemento arquitectónico de mayor significación.

Define un gran espacio luminoso y ligero, que recibe con claridad y se orienta al espectáculo y al paisaje. El parque, la piscina y las graderías son contenidos con el plano único de la cubierta. Un gesto claro y rotundo define el espíritu y sentido del proyecto, un edificio que es más un espacio que un volumen.

The architectural parti becomes transparent towards the surroundings and the park. The grandstands hang over the water and the trees like a supporting wall keeping the ancillary services inside.

The roof is the most significant architectural element. It defines a large, bright and airy space that distinctly welcomes and orients towards the spectacle and the landscape. The single plane of the roof embraces the park, the swimming pool and the grandstands.

A clear and unequivocal gesture defines the spirit and sense of the project, a building that is more space than volume.

Los tres elementos fundamentales se independizan en su construcción: la piscina, las graderías y la cubierta. Desde las graderías el escenario es el agua, y el telón de fondo el parque y la cordillera. El edificio exhibe su interior y a la vez se proyecta al exterior. El plano de la cubierta genera el gran espacio interior flexible que incorpora vistas, programas y múltiples usos. De la intención espacial se construye la lógica estructural de todo el proyecto.

The three fundamental elements become independent in their construction: the pool, the grandstands and the roof. From the stands the scenario is the water and the backdrop is the park and the mountains. The building displays its interior while projecting to the exterior. The plane of the roof generates a large flexible interior space that incorporates views, the program and multiple uses. This spatial intention generates the structural logic of the entire project.

El proyecto contempló el diseño y construcción del recinto polideportivo para los X Juegos Odesur, realizados en Chile en marzo de 2014, considerando una capacidad aproximada de 4.000 personas, instalaciones para deportistas, prensa y autoridades, así como instalaciones para público general con áreas de aprovisionamiento, baños públicos y recintos exteriores de esparcimiento y reunión.

En su condición de recinto polivalente, el proyecto genera una nave central con gran accesibilidad para permitir el ingreso y evacuación eficiente de actos masivos. La cancha hundida permite óptimas condiciones de visibilidad para el público y condiciones de autonomía para los deportistas.

Un factor importante es su localización, dentro del recinto del Estadio Nacional, lo que genera condiciones para el carácter sustentable de la obra, capaz de integrarse a su entorno verde y cumplir con altas exigencias en materia de eficiencia energética, térmica y lumínica solicitadas por el mandante. Es por ello que el proyecto se diseña bajo criterios de eficiencia en materia de iluminación y consumo energético, logrando una volumetría expresiva, funcional y flexible.

Su forma cóncava permite una gran eficiencia estructural para una amplia superficie libre de elementos soportantes mediante dos arcos estructurantes que conforman una cúpula traslúcida de policarbonato alveolar, permitiendo una alta autonomía lumínica y permanente control de la temperatura interior. Además el diseño facilita la transmisión del sonido y la disipación de ruido, para un ambiente libre de “excedentes acústicos” molestos.

The project comprised the design and construction of the sports complex for the X Odesur Games (South American games) held in Chile in March 2014, with an approximate capacity of 4,000 spectators, facilities for athletes, media and authorities as well as for the general public, with areas for vendors, restrooms and outdoor areas for meeting and recreation.

As a multi-purpose arena, the project creates a central nave with easy accessibility to enable quick and efficient access and evacuation for mass events. The sunken field allows optimum visibility for the audience and functional autonomy for the athletes.

Its location within the grounds of the National Stadium is an important factor that creates conditions for the sustainable character of the work, integrating into its green surroundings while meeting the high standards on energy, thermal and lighting efficiency required by the client. This is the reason why the project is designed based on efficiency in lighting and energy consumption criteria, achieving an expressive, functional and flexible volumetric solution.

Its concave shape permits great structural efficiency for a large area devoid of supporting elements, by means of two structural arches that give shape to a dome of translucent cellular polycarbonate, with considerable lighting autonomy and permanent control of indoor temperature. The design also facilitates sound transmission and noise dissipation for an environment free of disturbing acoustic excess.

Small openings in the upper zones generate cones of enough natural ventilation to preserve comfortable temperatures in public areas during periods of heat.

Green roofs in the athlete’s areas maintain stable room temperatures, minimizing the use of mechanical cooling during the year.

The green and translucent envelope of the project reinforces its sustainable features and presents a distinctive look that symbolizes the new design concepts inspiring sports facilities in Chile.

The new building is an expansion of the existing Resiter Building, located at the corner of Los Conquistadores and Los Hidalgos Streets in the Providencia district of Santiago. The proposal presents two volumes in harmony and conceived as a whole.

El primer edificio se concibió como un volumen cúbico de tres pisos construido de acuerdo a la máxima ocupación de la normativa de su época. Se trata de un edificio de reconocida calidad arquitectónica (Baixas y Del Río Arquitectos), constituido por muros de hormigón visto pigmentado, con vanos controlados y un vacío de triple altura que recorre todo el edificio de sur a norte.

El nuevo edificio se proyectó de modo que ambos volúmenes sean armónicos y se entiendan como un conjunto de la misma compañía, con el mismo lenguaje de volumen cúbico del edificio existente, con un tratamiento de vanos controlados, con vacíos interiores y con un nuevo material de revestimiento de fachada que respeta la tonalidad y peso del color del edificio existente.

The first building was conceived as a cubic three-story volume built to the maximum occupancy according to the zoning regulations of the time. It is a building of acknowledged architectural quality (Baixas y Del Río Architects), consisting of tinted concrete walls with restrained openings and a triple-height void that runs through the building from south to north.

The new building was designed to achieve harmony between both volumes and be understood as a compound for the same company, with the same cubic volumetric language of the previous building, discreet openings, interior spatial voids and a new cladding material for the façades that acknowledges the hue and weight of the color of the existing building.

Los dos edificios se unen a nivel de primer piso mediante un volumen triangular revestido en mármol como contrapunto a los dos volúmenes cúbicos. En este volumen se ubica el acceso al nuevo edificio y se articula el acceso al subterráneo del edificio existente.

La normativa que rige actualmente para la zona permite una edificación de hasta cinco niveles con una altura máxima de 16 m. El nuevo edificio construye el volumen máximo permitido, contemplando tres subterráneos y cinco pisos superiores.

El volumen máximo incluye los vacíos interiores, los cuales están conformados básicamente por el hall de acceso de cuatro pisos de altura y el vacío de doble altura en la fachada norte. Estos dos grandes vacíos configuran la continuidad espacial interior del edificio y potencian la continuidad del vacío interior del edificio existente, todos orientados hacia el Cerro San Cristóbal.

El edificio se concibe con plantas atravesadas y relacionadas entre sí a través de dos ejes principales: uno vertical compuesto principalmente por el hall de acceso de cuatro alturas, y uno horizontal en cada piso, conformado por un eje de traspaso visual en sentido norte-sur, que viene a continuación del vacío-eje planteado en el edificio existente. Con estos ejes se construye una transparencia hacia el cerro a través del edificio. Además de estos dos ejes ordenadores de la propuesta, el volumen se perfora con terrazas orientadas a distintas vistas y que permiten el ingreso de la luz natural hasta el corazón del proyecto.

Las fachadas norte y poniente se trabajan con un espesor de 70 cm situando las ventanas en el plomo interior, lo que permite regular la entrada de luz al interior del edificio.

La estructura del edificio es en base a muros en el perímetro y en el núcleo de ascensores y escaleras. Para aprovechar al máximo la altura permitida, se consideraron losas postensadas, sin vigas.

The two buildings are joined at the first level by a marble-clad triangular body as counterpoint to the two cubic volumes. This body holds the entrance to the new building and articulates the access to the basement of the existing building.

The regulations currently in force for the area allow construction of up to five levels with a maximum height of 16m. The new building fills the maximum allowed volume with five stories and three underground levels.

The maximum volume includes the interior spatial voids, which are mainly the four-story entrance hall and the double-height void on the north façade. These two large empty spaces constitute the interior spatial continuity of the building and enhance the continuity of the interior void of the existing building, both of them positioned towards San Cristobal Hill.

The building is conceived as a set of floor plans that are crossed and interconnected by two main axes: a vertical one composed by the quadruple-height entrance hall, and a horizontal one on each floor, a north-south visual transference axis that is the continuation of the void-axis of the existing building. These axes create a transparency through the building towards the hill. Besides these two organizing axes the volume is pierced with terraces positioned towards different views allowing the entry of natural light into the heart of the project.

The north and west façades are designed with a thickness of 70 cm and windows placed flush on the inner face, which allows regulating the entry of natural light into the building.

The structure of the building is based on perimeter walls and a core comprising the elevators and stairs. Post-tensioned slabs without beams were used to maximize the allowable height.

La sustentabilidad Todo el proyecto fue pensado en la perspectiva del ahorro de energía por lo que todas las especialidades involucradas diseñaron sus proyectos en base a los lineamientos dados por LEED para lograr este objetivo.

El edificio contempla un sistema de clima en base a volumen variable, artefactos sanitarios con ahorro de agua e iluminación en base a Led y sensores de volumen. El paisajismo contempla riego por goteo y especies nativas. El proyecto de arquitectura trabajó la envolvente completa como una fachada ventilada y aislada por el exterior del muro estructural de hormigón, lo que ayuda en gran medida al buen comportamiento térmico del edificio.

Se cuidó la especificación de todos los revestimientos interiores en base a lo exigido en relación a su composición, pegamentos con bajo VOC, cadenas de custodia y otros.

Todos los logros en diseño de las distintas especialidades en conjunto a un proceso de construcción que tomó todas las medidas de reguardo para el manejo de desechos durante la construcción, el control de erosión y sedimentación durante la construcción, el manejo de la calidad de aire interior durante la construcción y antes de la ocupación del edificio, lograron la certificación LEED Gold del edificio.

El programa En el primer piso se ubica un auditorio, las oficinas para visitas, la salida al patio posterior y el hall que comunica con el edificio existente. El segundo y cuarto piso se conforman con oficinas individuales y plantas libres para los distintos equipos de trabajo.

El tercer piso es el más cerrado y alberga oficinas individuales. Por último en el quinto piso se ubican las dependencias del directorio y la cafetería. Durante el transcurso de la obra se decidió habilitar el techo como una gran terraza panorámica con vistas en 360°.

The program The first floor contains an auditorium, offices for visitors, an exit to the back patio and the hall that links with the existing building. The second and fourth floors are organized to contain individual offices and open plan areas for different work teams.

The third floor is less open and contains private offices. Finally, the premises for the board of directors and a cafeteria are placed on the fifth floor. During construction a decision was made to enable the roof as a terrace with panoramic 360° views.

Sustainability The entire project was conceived to follow energy savings criteria and therefore all engineering projects involved were designed based on the corresponding LEED guidelines.

The building includes a variable air volume HVAC system, water saving plumbing fixtures and lighting with LEDs and volume sensors.

The landscaping design includes drip irrigation and native species.

The architectural project involved a full enclosure of ventilated and isolated façades set on the exterior face of the structural concrete walls, greatly improving the thermal performance of the building.

Careful consideration was taken in the specifications for all interior finishes in relation to their required composition, adhesives with low VOC content, chains of custody and others.

The building was certified LEED Gold thanks to all the design features in the different engineering specialties plus a construction process that took all the necessary safeguard measures for waste management, erosion and sedimentation control, and the management of indoor air quality during construction and prior to building occupancy.

Against a highly contrasted urban environment, known for the presence of valuable public buildings and rudimentary dwelling, the project looks for a compact, strong and monolithic image in order to represent a cultural centre for Independencia community.

El contenedor arquitectónico debe ser capaz de jugar un rol relevante en la conceptualización y configuración de los espacios de encuentro, entregando las condiciones físicas que puedan motivar y acoger el acto de la comunicación que caracteriza a las actuales bibliotecas, más allá del tradicional rol contenedor del acervo bibliográfico tradicional.

En este nuevo contexto paradigmático, las bibliotecas devienen en íconos arquitectónicos que articulan e impregnan de nuevos significados jerárquicos a la forma compositiva de la ciudad tradicional.

Cualificando su condición de esquina y aprovechando su larga fachada (60 m) que enfrenta al jardín arbolado de la Biblioteca de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Chile, el proyecto propone un paseo cultural abierto hacia la ciudad, con un recorrido ascendente que se inicia en Av. Independencia haciendo fácilmente comprensible al visitante todo el programa que contiene.

The materialization of this space tries to establish itself as a valuable input to the configuration and conceptualization of gathering spaces, bringing physical conditions to motivate and to host the act of communication featured in contemporary libraries, which go beyond the role of a conventional bibliographic heritage containers.

In this context of paradigmatic change, libraries become into architectural icons, joining and pervading new meanings to the formal composition of the conventional city.

Acknowledging its corner situation and making use of its 60 m long east facade in front of the forest garden of the Universidad de Chile Medicine Library, the project proposes a continuous promenade open to the city, with an ascending path which starts in Independencia Avenue, and offering an easy understanding of the contained programme.

Concordante con los rasgos de autosuficiencia y simultaneidad en la cultura contemporánea, se plantea una continuidad narrativa de múltiples entradas y recorridos. Un contenedor espacial estratificado por desniveles interconectados que permitan la integración visual y la segregación funcional.

La estructura perimetral del edificio permite considerar “plantas libres” en sus diferentes niveles, lo que facilita la adaptación y redistribución futura de las áreas de atención al público. Incluso la mayor altura de las plantas del segundo piso permitiría la ampliación de la biblioteca.

Acorde con los criterios de la mantención de la edificación pública en Chile se utilizaron materiales de probada resistencia, que en conjunto permite un bajo índice de mantenimiento. Se trata de una obra de hormigón armado tradicional con muros sísmicos perimetrales, columnas interiores y losas del mismo material en los entrepisos. La techumbre corresponde a una estructura metálica, con cubierta de aluzinc prepintado y cielo acústico de yeso cartón al interior. Los muros interiores cuentan con el mismo material acústico en posiciones estratégicas que permiten reducir la reverberancia. El revestimiento de los muros exteriores es mármol travertino nacional (color similar a la Facultad de Medicina). Los revestimientos de pisos son de porcelanato antideslizante. Los cristales son laminados transparentes y forman parte de una reja/celosía proyectada en todas las ventanas como elemento de seguridad.

En las áreas de lectura y/o estar de trabajo se consideran ventanas superiores orientadas al sur (luz homogénea), la reja/celosía también actúa como quiebrasol o parasol según su orientación (oriente y poniente).

El edificio es ventilado de manera natural y reforzado mecánicamente en las áreas de servicios. Considera calefacción por radiadores de agua caliente en muros perimetrales y se han considerado las instalaciones necesarias para la futura habilitación de un sistema de aire acondicionado en caso de ser necesario.

Regarding individuality and simultaneousness of contemporary cities like Santiago, a fluent, flexible spatial interrelationship is required to bring a narrative continuity of multiple entrances and walkthroughs. Consequently, it is proposed a container for a space of interrelated ramps, achieving visual connection and functional segregation.

The structural perimeter allows an open layout in both levels, which eases adaptation and new arrangement for the public areas in the future. Even the taller second floor allows an extension within the library itself.

Close to the maintenance criteria of public buildings in Chile, only proved resistant materials were used, so they ensure low maintenance rate as a whole. Materials considered are cast concrete structure with seismic walls in the perimeter, interior columns and slabs of the same material in the mezzanine level.

The roof consists of a steel frame structure with painted metal sheets, and acoustic plasterboard ceilings in the interior. Interior walls are of the same acoustic material placed strategically as a way to reduce reverberation. The external envelope is made of local Travertine marble, similar to the colour of the Medicine School is facing to. Floorings are of non-slippery ceramic tiles.

Windows are made of laminated transparent glass and have bar blinds fixed, built as a safety feature.

In the reading areas and/or workspaces, higher south-oriented windows are considered for gaining indirect flatter sunlight during the day, and safety bars acting as blinds or sunshade are placed in the east and west.

The building has natural ventilation, only service areas being fed mechanically. Although air conditioning is not considered, the necessary plumbing was already installed if needed.

El Edificio Consistorial se genera debido a la necesidad del municipio de concentrar todas sus destinaciones, antes dispersas, en un solo lugar. La obra fue adjudicada mediante proceso de licitación pública el año 2009 y su construcción se ejecutó durante los años 2012 y 2013.

The City Hall Building solved the need of the municipality to concentrate all its previously scattered departments in one place.

The project was commissioned through an open bidding process in 2009 and its construction was implemented during 2012 and 2013.

El desafío de desarrollar un programa de arquitectura vasto en un terreno pequeño desencadenó en un edificio de tres niveles, con un gran espacio central. El edificio se emplaza en un extremo de la Plaza de Armas de la comuna, donde funcionaba la antigua alcaldía, dañada por el terremoto del 2010.

La propuesta urbana consiste en la generación de un atrio techado, el cual proyecta el interior del edificio hasta una plaza dura exterior, lugar de uso ceremonial-conmemorativo y vínculo entre la Plaza de Armas y el interior del edificio. La continuidad de los pavimentos refuerza esta condición y permite una solución que favorece la unidad del total.

La propuesta arquitectónica genera un volumen interior de tres niveles, con un gran espacio central de triple altura. El primer nivel contiene los usos más públicos, los comunitarios, tales como la radio local o el salón multiuso, los que permiten su uso a cualquier día y hora, a diferencia del horario de oficina del resto del edificio. Estos recintos se relacionan con el atrio techado del edificio, el cual se define como un gran corredor, similar al de una casa tradicional chilena. El atrio y el primer nivel también se distinguen del resto del edificio por su revestimiento de piedra.

El interior del edificio se ordena a partir del gran espacio central, el cual concentra todas las circulaciones verticales. En el piso 2° y 3° se ubican los distintos departamentos municipales y servicios, los que concentran sus lugares de espera de público hacia el espacio central de triple altura. El uso del vidrio y la madera otorgan al perímetro interior del edificio una solución sobria y característica.

The challenge of developing a large architectural program in such a small plot resulted in a three-story building with a large central space. The building is placed at one end of the Plaza de Armas where the old town hall –damaged by the 2010 earthquake– was located.

The urban proposal is based on the creation of a covered atrium, which projects the interior of the building out on to a hardscaped exterior square, a place of ceremonial and commemorative use and a link between the Plaza de Armas and the building. The continuity of paving reinforces this condition and favors the unity of the complex.

The architectural proposal creates an interior three level volume with a large central triple height space. The first level contains the most public community uses, such as the local radio and a multi-function hall, which allow their use at any day and time, unlike the office hours governing the rest of the building. These areas relate to the building’s covered atrium, which is defined as a large corridor reminiscent of the traditional Chilean home. The atrium and the first level stand out from the rest of the building for their stone cladding.

The interior of the building is organized around the large central area, which concentrates all vertical circulations. The varied municipal service departments are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors, locating their public waiting areas towards the central triple height space. The use of glass and wood provide the interior perimeter of the building a restrained and distinctive solution.

Respecto a la materialidad, el edificio contiene elementos estructurales en hormigón armado con terminación vista y pintados de color blanco, revestimiento de Durafront en sus fachadas norte y sur. Hacia el norte, relacionando la expresión material del edificio con la arbolada de la plaza, la fachada contiene celosías verticales revestidas de aluzinc y jardineras que visten la fachada de verde en época estival. La madera en cielos, puertas y los porcelanatos de tonos grises.

Adicionalmente, para mejorar el ahorro energético, el espacio central se plantea como una cubierta revestida de madera por el interior y con ventanales en su perímetro, los que en verano se mantienen abiertos durante la noche, favoreciendo la disminución del uso del aire acondicionado durante las tardes. Junto con el gran espacio central, las fachadas norte y sur se componen de fachadas ventiladas, con revestimiento Durafront de colores grises por el exterior y aislación térmica por el interior. Junto con lo anterior, la fachada verde también otorga una solución que busca el ahorro energético.

As to the choice of materials, the building has its structural elements in white-painted exposed concrete and Durafront paneling on its north and south facades. To the north, linking the material expression of the building with the tree-lined square, the facade features aluzinc coated vertical blinds and planters that paint the facade in green during summer. The ceilings and doors are wooden while the floors are paved with gray toned ceramic porcelain tiles.

Furthermore, and to improve energy savings, the central space is conceived as a roof with a wooden ceiling and windows on its perimeter that are kept open in summer nights favoring the reduction of air conditioning use during the afternoons. Along with the large central space, the north and south facades are composed of ventilated facades with gray Durafront panels on the outside and thermal insulation on the inside. In addition, the green facade also provides a solution that contributes to energy savings.

Esta vivienda de descanso se ubica en el condominio Beranda, entre los balnearios de Cachagua y Maitencillo. Está emplazada en una fuerte pendiente, con una radical vista al Océano Pacífico, expuesta a los vientos del sur poniente y a futuros vecinos.

This vacation home is located at the Beranda condominium between the seaside resorts of Cachagua and Maitencillo. It is located on a steep slope, with a sweeping view of the Pacific Ocean, exposed to southwestern winds and future neighbors.

La estrategia principal fue crear una gran terraza, a la manera de un “nuevo suelo” que permitiera la vida “del ocio” y radicalizar aún más la vista al océano, ofreciendo una relación única entre el habitante y la línea del horizonte, así como los acantilados.

La terraza se prolonga hacia el mar eliminando la mirada a las casas existentes. El programa se descompone en dos unidades, lo cual permite abordar el terreno de una manera adecuada y posibilita dar el apoyo arquitectónico a la terraza. Hacia el sur, una gran viga-muro de metal y durmientes permite enmarcar la vista, protegerse del viento sur poniente y de la vista de futuros vecinos. Bajo ella se crea un nuevo lugar, que acoge el acceso a la vivienda, la relación entre las dos casas y un lugar al resguardo del sol. El recorrido arquitectónico se completa accediendo a un patio interior que se abre al cielo y desde el cual se sube a la terraza y la vista.

The main strategy was to create a grand terrace, a “new ground level” of sorts to allow for a life of “leisure” and to further radicalize the ocean view, offering a unique relationship between the inhabitant and the horizon, as is experienced on a cliff.

The terrace extends towards the sea, blocking the view towards existing houses. The program is divided into dual units to deal with the site in a proper manner and provide architectural support to the terrace. To the south, a large girder/wall of steel and railroad ties frames the views, protects against the southwestern wind and the views of future neighbors. A new place is created underneath accommodating the access to the dwellings, the connection between the two homes and a place sheltered from the sun. Entering an inner courtyard that opens to the sky and provides access to the terrace and the views completes the architectural journey.

Las dos viviendas desarrollan sus recorridos interiores en sentido perpendicular a la pendiente, haciendo participar a todos los recintos interiores de la vista. La arquitectura de los dos volúmenes longitudinales, en corte, se descompone y se pliega en una serie de losas y vigas que permiten salvar grandes luces sin entorpecer la vista al océano y protegerse del sol poniente.

La temperatura y la atmósfera creada por los materiales utilizados ofrece una integración con el color de la tierra y vegetación del lugar.

The two houses develop their interior circulation perpendicular to the direction of the slope, providing views for all the indoor enclosures. The architecture of the two longitudinal volumes breaks down and folds –in section– into a series of slabs and beams that allow for large spans without obstructing the ocean views and provide protection from the western sun.

The temperature and the atmosphere created by the chosen materials integrate with the color of the earth and the local vegetation.

Definido por el terreno, el partido general fue un edificio largo y angosto distribuido en dos núcleos verticales en los extremos, independientes, para servir a tres departamentos por cada uno.

Uno de ellos, el más grande, da a la culata del edificio para así ganar tres orientaciones; los pequeños se ubicaron hacia el norte y el sur.

La envolvente se trabajó como una “caja blanca” simple, regular y suspendida a la cual se adosó una rejilla cuadriculada de hormigón gris al norte y sur. En esta se desarrollaron balcones de los departamentos pequeños dentro del mismo plomo y ventanas de recintos secundarios. Se optó por este concepto de simplicidad para responder de la manera más neutral posible al entorno.

Las perforaciones de esta caja son regulares y rítmicas en forma vertical, siendo balcón corrido al oriente y poniente (calle) y otras al interior de los departamentos, brindando una luminosidad interior intensa y regular.

El concepto del edificio se planteó con departamentos en un piso con un programa simple, amplio y con metrajes mayores a los de edificios habitacionales similares. Los espacios interiores –como estar, comedor y cocina– se distribuyen en un solo ambiente de modo de acentuar esta espacialidad y amplitud, sumada al balcón que al estar al mismo nivel se incorpora al espacio.

El concepto “evolución” alude a que estos departamentos pueden ampliarse en un dormitorio en el caso de los departamentos chicos y dos dormitorios en los grandes, gracias a muros de tabiquería.

The site determined the main concept: a long narrow building with two independent vertical cores at the ends to serve three apartments each. The largest units were placed at the head of the building in order to benefit from three different exposures.

The smaller apartments were located to the north and south.

The enclosure was designed as a simple, regular and suspended “white box”. A gray concrete square grid was attached to the north and south faces. Balconies for the small apartments were placed flush to this grid, as well as windows for the secondary rooms. This concept of simplicity was chosen to respond to the context in the most neutral way possible.

The perforations of this box are regular and have a vertical rhythm with continuous balconies running to the east and west (to the street) and others within the apartments, providing a strong and even interior light.

The proposed building concept is based on single story apartments with a simple and expansive program, with greater surface areas than similar residential buildings. The interior spaces –living room, dining room and kitchen– are joined together to accentuate this spatiality and breadth. The balcony, being at the same level, adds to the space.

The term “evolution” refers to the fact that these apartments can grow an extra bedroom in the case of the small ones and two bedrooms in the larger units, thanks to soft partition walls.

La cubierta se proyectó con terrazas/quinchos independientes para algunos departamentos del último piso, unidos a través de escaleras desde el balcón. Además se distribuyeron dos terrazas comunes. Así el edificio tiene una quinta fachada que permite darle una expansión a sus usuarios y al entorno una cubierta viva y con matices de pavimento y vegetación.

The roof features terraces and private barbecues for some of the top floor apartments, reached via stairs on the balconies. Two common terraces were implemented as well. The building has therefore a fifth façade that provides an expansion to its users, and to the environment a living roof with nuanced paving and green groundcovers.

Guillermo Hevia García + Nicolás Urzúa Sus primeros trabajos juntos los hicieron como compañeros en la Escuela de Arquitectura de la PUC, de la cual se titularon hace tres años como destacados alumnos. De hecho, Nicolás ya sumaba estudios en la prestigiada Ecole Paris Malaquais (2008) y Guillermo obtuvo el Premio Promoción 2011, a lo que sumaría experiencia como editor de la sección de Arquitectura de la Revista ED (2012) y luego como editor de contenidos de Plataforma Arquitectura (2013). Hoy ambos siguen ligados a la PUC, el primero como profesor de Taller I y Hevia como profesor de Taller IV en la Escuela de Arquitectura.

Si bien no conforman una oficina establecida, la dupla desarrolla un trabajo colaborativo a partir del cual se están haciendo notar en la escena de la arquitectura chilena joven. Además de un breve portafolio de obras, entre sus logros está el primer lugar obtenido en el concurso Estación Cero de CMPC–Constructo, con el proyecto Los Bosques, y el segundo lugar del concurso nacional Edificio Anexo Museo Histórico Nacional (2013). También fueron finalistas del Young ArchitectsProgram 2012 (YAP_Constructo/MoMA NY/MAXXI Roma) con su proyecto Playground.

En su ejercicio profesional buscan abarcar y realizar proyectos lo más diversos posible. “No tenemos, ni nos interesa, tener un manifiesto o manera a priori de enfrentar los proyectos, ya que nos parece artificioso y pretencioso cuando no existe un gran camino recorrido. Buscamos salirnos de los encasillamientos o clasificaciones artificiosas que hoy en día abundan”, explican.

Their first joint work was made as partners in the School of Architecture at the Catholic University, from which they graduated three years ago as outstanding students. In fact, Nicolás had already performed studies at the prestigious Ecole Paris Malaquais (2008) and Guillermo won the 2011 Promotion Award, and later gained experience as section editor of Architecture at ED Magazine (2012) and then as contents editor of Plataforma Arquitectura (2013). Both continue linked to the Catholic University today, the first as professor of Workshop I and Hevia as professor of Workshop IV at the School of Architecture.

Despite not having an established office, the duo has developed a noteworthy collaborative work in the young Chilean architecture scene. Apart from a brief portfolio of works, the first place obtained in the Zero Station competition by CMPC-Construct, with the Los Bosques project, and second place in the national competition for the National Historical Museum Annex (2013) stand out among other achievements. They were also finalists in the 2012 Young Architects Program (YAP_Constructo/MoMA NY/MAXXI Roma) with their Playground project.

In their professional practice they seek to embrace and implement projects as diverse as possible. “We do not have, nor do we want, a manifest or a priori way of dealing with projects because it seems contrived and pretentious in the absence of great experience. We seek to avoid the pigeonholes or artificial classifications that are so common today”, they explain.

Este proyecto consistió en el diseño de un pabellón de acero temporal y desmontable para ser rearmado a futuro en un nuevo terreno. La complejidad radicó en el emplazamiento sobre un pabellón existente y la posibilidad de construir solo sobre la sala que ocupa actualmente la Fundación (7.6 x 7.6 m), sin alterar el perímetro. El nuevo pabellón se alzó sobre cuatro pilares desde el interior, generando un gran vacío central y abriendo una cara hacia el patio de la Escuela de Arquitectura PUC, cerrando las otras caras con paneles perforados de gran formato a modo de un disipador de calor.

This project involved the design of a temporary and demountable steel pavilion, to be reassembled on a new site in the future. The challenge was the placement over an existing pavilion and the possibility of building only within the perimeter of the hall the Foundation currently occupies (7.6 x 7.6 m). The new pavilion was raised on four inner columns creating a large central void, which opens one side to the courtyard of the School of Architecture of the Catholic University and closes the other sides with large format perforated panels that act as heat dissipaters.

El proyecto consistió en remodelar el colegio existente y construir nuevos programas con el fin de modernizar la infraestructura y dar nueva cara a la institución, con tres escalas de acción: la primera ordenó el colegio en función de sus cuatro patios como cuatro lugares con atmósferas según sus usuarios; la segunda se relacionó a la construcción de una envolvente metálica perforada y la inserción de lucarnas; la tercera incorporó umbrales y celosías que median la relación con el cuerpo.

The project involved the renovation of the existing school and the construction of new programs to modernize the infrastructure and provide a new face for the institution. The design comprised three levels of action: the first organized the school around its four courtyards as four places with atmospheres based on its users; the second level related to the construction of a perforated metal skin and the insertion of skylights; and the third added thresholds and shading lattices that articulate the relationship with the body.

Se buscó generar un lugar en el cual se trabaje de manera creativa y colaborativa, reflejo o manifiesto físico del espíritu de la agencia, alejado de los típicos esquemas de oficinas de planta libre o sectorizada.

Se propuso un espacio fluido en el cual se insertaron estratégicamente tres volúmenes para los tres programas fundamentales. Estos volumenes crean los diferentes espacios y las relaciones entre las partes del proyecto y sus usuarios.

The objective was to create a place in which to work creatively and in collaboration, a reflection or a physical manifestation of the spirit of the agency, far from the typical open plan or sectional office schemes. The proposal was a fluid space in which three volumes for the three core programs were strategically placed. These volumes create the different spaces and relationships between the parts of the project and its users.

From his active role in the French Society of Architects, the Argentine architect and urban planner based in France shared his experience and views regarding issues

Hace más de 30 años que el argentino Pablo Katz (56) llegó a París a complementar sus estudios de arquitectura, sin imaginar que allí asentaría una sólida carrera profesional que incluye un estudio con nombre propio, Pablo Katz Architecture; más de 2 mil viviendas, programas de urbanismo y edificaciones públicas tales como el Centro de Congresos de Périgueux y la reestructuración de un edificio medieval para la Ópera del Rin en Estrasburgo; actividades académicas en instituciones como la École Speciale d’Architecture (ESA) de París y la Kunstakademie de Stuttgart, y también una comprometida actividad gremial concentrada en la Sociedad Francesa de Arquitectos, entidad de la que hoy es vicepresidente y que antes presidió. En ese rol le tocó recibir al grupo de arquitectos de la AOA que viajó en Misión Tecnológica a Europa el año 2012. Muchos de los temas que conversaron entonces se profundizaron esta vez, en que Katz fue invitado a Chile para participar en el Seminario de Actualidad Inmobiliaria y dar una conferencia en la FAU de la Universidad de Chile.

The Argentine Pablo Katz (56) arrived in Paris over 30 years ago to deepen his studies in architecture, never imagining that he would establish a solid career there that includes a study with his own name, Pablo Katz Architecture: more than 2000 homes, urban planning programs and public buildings such as the Congress Center at Périgueux and the restructuring of a medieval building for the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg; academic activities in institutions such as the Paris École Speciale d’Architecture (ESA) and the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design; and also a dedicated union activity focused in the French Society of Architects, entity of which he is now vice president and previously chaired. In that position he met a group of AOA architects that traveled on a Technological Mission to Europe in 2012. Many of the issues discussed in that opportunity were deepened this time, taking advantage of Katz’s presence in Chile, invited to participate in a real estate seminar and a lecture at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, University of Chile.

- Enrique Browne: La arquitectura francesa ha perdido el peso cultural que tuvo en la época de Le Corbusier o de L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui.

En su opinión, ¿cuáles son los nombres que marcan hoy el camino en Francia?

Es difícil dar nombres y definir la arquitectura francesa actual porque hay mucha diversidad. Vivimos un periodo de búsqueda y de debate con escuelas, tendencias y posiciones muy diversas. Están los arquitectos de estatura internacional, como Jean Nouvel, Christian de Portzamparc y quizá también Jean Michel Wilmotte…

Pero la necesidad de ser parte del star system les ha hecho mucho mal. En lo personal yo respetaba mucho a Nouvel por sus cuestionamientos y propuestas, pero se está perdiendo en una búsqueda desenfrenada por sorprender y mantener su status de gran figura. De Portzamparc se ha sometido a la necesidad de hacer una obra de artista al punto de caer en un manierismo exagerado.

- Yves Besançon: ¿No incluye a Dominique Perrault?

No, no lo incluyo. Es curioso, Perrault es mucho más conocido fuera que dentro de Francia, donde su pensamiento y su obra siempre han sido objeto de debate.

Es una figura. En lo personal lo considero muy buen constructor, con un nivel de detalles fantásticos, pero con una arquitectura muy académica. La arquitectura es un arte útil, no es producto de un capricho, y la arquitectura de Perrault en muchos casos se desentiende de las necesidades del proyecto.

- Raimundo Lira: ¿Qué figuras existen más allá del star system?

Hay muchísimos arquitectos menos conocidos que desarrollan una producción de calidad con posicionamientos muy diversos. El último premio nacional de arquitectura, por ejemplo, Marc Barani. Es de muy bajo perfil. No tiene muchas obras, pero cada una es de calidad notable. Un gran proyecto suyo es el terminal de tranvías de Niza. También hay varios discípulos del Cursus 1 de Enrique Ciriani en Francia, figuras interesantes como Jacques Ripault, quien estuvo casado con una hija de Emilio Duhart y formaron un estudio. De la misma tendencia es Michel Kagan, ya fallecido, pero que dejó una obra de gran nivel y que continúa su mujer, Nathalie Régnier.

Destaco también a Patrick Bouchain, cuya obra tiene una mirada muy personal y que se relaciona menos con la alta tecnología y más con la reutilización, reconversión y reciclaje de materiales, investigación técnico constructiva. Otros que han desarrollado un trabajo bastante personal, con una reflexión profunda sobre la evolución de los programas, son Anne Lacaton y Jean-Philippe Vassal.

Tienen obras tan curiosas como la restructuración del Palais de Tokyo, un antiguo edificio convertido en museo y que dejaron en estado brutalista, como una obra inacabada del tipo okupa, con muros derruidos y apuntalados con anillos de acero.

Son conocidos por sus propuestas de vivienda social, como la remodelación de la Tour Bois Le Petre, una torre en un sector muy popular al norte de París por la que ganaron la Escuadra de Plata, el premio a la mejor obra del año en Francia.

Se inscriben en un discurso más general frente a lo patrimonial, discurso que yo comparto. Es una posición sobre las intervenciones en el patrimonio de la arquitectura moderna que alude a edificaciones que dejó el periodo de postguerra y que son parte de la herencia de la arquitectura del paisaje francés.

- Enrique Browne: French architecture seems to have lost the cultural influence it had in the era of Le Corbusier or the L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui magazine. In your opinion, what are the names that mark the way in France today?

It is difficult to give names and define current French architecture because there is so much diversity. We live in a period of exploration and debate with different schools, trends and positions. There are architects of international stature, such as Jean Nouvel, Christian de Portzamparc and perhaps Jean Michel Wilmotte ... but the need to be part of the star system has caused them much harm. Personally I had a great respect for Nouvel for his research and proposals, but he is losing himself in a frantic race to impress and maintain his status as a great figure. De Portzamparc has caved in to the need to make “artist’s works” to the point of falling into exaggerated mannerism.

- Yves Besancon: You don’t include Dominique Perrault?

No, I don’t include him. Remarkably, Perrault is much better known abroad than in France, where his thought and works have always been subject of debate. He is certainly a figure. I personally consider him a great builder with a fantastic level of detail, but with a very academic architecture. Architecture is a useful art, it is not the product of a whim, and Perrault’s architecture often ignores the needs of the project.

- Raimundo Lira: What figures are beyond the star system?

There are many less known architects who are developing a production of quality from very different positions. Marc Barani, the latest national architecture award recipient is an example. He cultivates a very low profile. Not too many works, but each one of remarkable quality. The tram terminal in Nice is a great project. There are also several disciples of the Cursus 1 by Henry Ciriani in France, interesting figures like Jacques Ripault who formed a studio with his wife, a daughter of Emilio Duhart. Of the same trend is Michel Kagan, now deceased, but who left a work of the highest standards continued by his wife, Nathalie Régnier.

I would also like to mention Patrick Bouchain, whose work has a very personal imprint and is less related to high-tech and more to the reusing, conversion and recycling of materials, as part of a technical constructive research. Others, who have developed a very personal work with deep reflection on the evolution of the program, are Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal. They have such curious works as the restructuring of the Palais de Tokyo, an old building they converted into a museum and left in a brutalist state, as if an unfinished building for squatters, with crumbling walls and braced with steel rings. They are known for their social housing proposals such as the remodeling of the Tour Bois Le Petre, a tower in a very popular area north of Paris, for which they won the Équerre d’argent, the prize for the best work of the year in France. They form part of a broader discourse on heritage that I agree with. It is a position regarding interventions on the modern architectural heritage that refers to buildings left by the postwar period and that are part of the legacy of the architecture of the French landscape.

- Carlos Alberto Urzúa: Es mirar el patrimonio no solo a partir de su estética, sino también desde su representatividad cultural, histórica y social.

Hay muchos, como el propio De Portzamparc, que han dicho que los arquitectos debieran pedir disculpas por haber dejado como legado los grandes conjuntos habitacionales de la postguerra. Es una aberración como discurso. Esos conjuntos se hicieron para acoger a gente que vivía en condiciones terribles. En los años 50 y 60 en Francia había un déficit de millones de viviendas, y en París menos de la mitad tenía calefacción, agua, electricidad y baños al interior. Por entonces se construían 650 mil viviendas anuales que daban respuesta a millones de personas. Entonces ¡cómo decir que los arquitectos deban arrepentirse! En esos momentos la sociedad francesa pudo responder a un problema urgente de vivienda, sin embargo hoy en Francia tenemos más de un millón de personas en condición de precariedad habitacional y solo se construyen alrededor de 200 mil viviendas al año. Y si comparamos la calidad del espacio, de superficie, de luz, esas viviendas eran hasta un 30% más grandes que el promedio de la vivienda que se construye hoy. Actualmente los costos del suelo y de la construcción son altísimos, y la gente no puede comprar una propiedad ni pagar arriendo. Para adaptar el mercado inmobiliario de venta o alquiler a las posibilidades económicas se han ido reduciendo las superficies. Por eso el ejemplo de Lacaton & Vassal es interesante, porque pese a todo agrandan la superficie de vivienda y proponen tipologías valiosas.

Patrimonio con otra mirada - YB: ¿Cuál es la posición de los arquitectos frente a las políticas de desarrollo urbano del estado?

Es muy diversa. Pero arquitectos como Lacaton & Vassal han ido contra una política de demolición de edificaciones de la postguerra, una suerte de negación de esos barrios de barras y torres para reemplazarlos por edificios de cuatro a seis pisos de vivienda privada. En este movimiento pensamos que hay que valorizar las obras a partir de lo que son, apoyarse sobre la materia con la que trabajamos y no con lógica de tabla rasa. Esos tejidos de grandes conjuntos tienen defectos, pero también grandes virtudes y potencialidades. Los defectos son menos arquitectónicos que sociales, son el hecho de que se han concentrado en sectores con malos servicios públicos y equipamiento, sin trabajo, sin oferta cultural, sin transporte público, con poblaciones de mayor precariedad. Es cierto que hay edificios sin ningún valor y que pueden demolerse, pero muchos de esos tejidos se pueden rescatar.

- CAU: Gran parte de los encargos de arquitectura pública en Francia se resuelven por concursos, en un sistema organizado y transparente. Las convocatorias son acotadas y parece existir relación directa entre concurso fallado y obra construida. ¿Cómo opera el sistema de concursos?

Efectivamente la mayor parte del encargo público es por concurso y los concursos son por invitación, es decir, no son abiertos. El primer paso es publicar el llamado en un diario oficial, invitando a los interesados a mandar un dossier de referencia con sus proyectos, además de acreditar seriedad, probidad y estado financiero. De los candidatos -de toda Francia y de la Unión Europea, según sea el encargo- se seleccionan entre cuatro y seis equipos, incluyendo al menos una oficina joven.

Los seleccionados reciben las bases definitivas y también un pago por participar, una prima estimada en el 80% de los gastos que en el caso del ganador es un adelanto de sus honorarios.

- Carlos Alberto UrzĂşa: A vision of the heritage not only from its aesthetic value, but also from its cultural, historical and social representativeness.

Many, including De Portzamparc himself, have said that architects should apologize for having left the legacy of the great postwar housing complexes. This is an aberrant discourse. These complexes were made to accommodate people living in terrible conditions. In the 50s and 60s France had a deficit of millions of homes, and in Paris less than half had heating, water, electricity and indoor bathrooms. By then, 650 thousand homes a year were built to respond to the needs of millions of people. So how can anybody say that architects should regret this! At the time French society could respond to an urgent housing problem, while today we have over one million people in France living in precarious housing and only about 200 thousand homes are built per year. And if we compare the quality of the space, surface areas and natural light, these homes were up to 30% larger than the average home being built today. Currently the costs of land and construction are extremely high, and people cannot buy property or pay rent. To adapt the real estate market to the current economic possibilities for purchase or rental, surface areas have had to be reduced. So the example of Lacaton & Vassal is interesting, because despite all, they have increased the housing surface area and they propose valuable typologies.

Another vision of heritage - YB: What is the position of the architects regarding public policies for urban development?

It is quite varied. Architects like Lacaton & Vassal have gone against the policy of

demolishing buildings of the postwar period, a sort of denial of those neighborhoods of slabs and towers by replacing them with four to six-story buildings for private housing. In this movement we believe we have to value the works from what they are, relying on the material with which we work, without the logic of a clean slate. The urban fabric of those large complexes has defects, but also great virtues and potential. The defects are less architectural than social, the result of being concentrated in areas with poor public services and amenities, with no jobs, no cultural options, no public transportation, and highly vulnerable populations.

Certainly there are buildings with no value that can be demolished, but many of these urban fabrics can be recovered.

- CAU: A significant part of the commissions for public architecture in France are resolved through competitions, in an organized and transparent system. The calls for tender are restricted and there appears to be a direct relationship between judged competition and built work. How does the competition system work?

Indeed most of the public commissions are based on competitions by invitation, they are not open to all. The first step is to publish the call in an official newspaper, inviting interested parties to send a reference dossier with their projects demonstrating reliability, integrity and financial situation. Four to six teams are selected as candidates - including at least one young office - from all over France and the European Union depending on the commission. Those selected receive the final tender rules and everyone is paid to participate with a premium estimated to cover 80% of the cost that in the case of the winner is an advance on their fees.

- YB: Es interesante la selección acotada de participantes, porque efectivamente ningún jurado puede evaluar a fondo, con la detención y análisis que se requiere, más de seis o siete propuestas. En Chile eso no ocurre y los jurados llegan a evaluar decenas de propuestas. Y tampoco se cubren los costos de participación, lo cual deja de antemano fuera a muchos buenos arquitectos.

Todo trabajo merece retribución, más uno de la envergadura de los concursos de arquitectura, que implican pago de equipos y materiales, además de energía creativa. Y frente a la cantidad de proyectos a evaluar, si son muchos en la práctica el jurado termina eligiendo imágenes, dejando de lado proyectos que pueden ser notables por estar mal presentados.

- RL: La arquitectura francesa parece surgir de un proceso de reflexión, en que el estado se compromete a dar trabajo a los arquitectos cuando corresponde y ellos están obligados a desarrollar buena arquitectura. ¿Cómo participa usted de eso?

Una de las cosas que me ha marcado es la definición que hace la ley de arquitectura y rige el ejercicio profesional en Francia. Ella define la arquitectura y el rol del arquitecto como un trabajo en defensa del interés común. Es decir, el arquitecto es un profesional que obra en el sentido del interés general. Esto es un elemento mayor, porque ha permitido a los arquitectos tener legitimidad para opinar sobre cuestiones urbanas y arquitectura, participar en debates sobre el futuro de la ciudad, proponer y resolver con autoridad.

Sin embargo, mucho de esto está en regresión, y muchos arquitectos están preocupados del rumbo que está marcando la economía en una Unión Europea que en vez de nivelar hacia arriba, nivela hacia abajo, minando muchas de las especificaciones francesas de calidad. Si antes la vivienda social se construía por concurso, hoy estamos pasando a contratos por licitación.

RL: Volviendo al tema de la recuperación patrimonial, ¿cómo enfrenta su oficina esa conversación? Tomemos por ejemplo el conjunto de los atelier, en que optó por generar un antejardín en un entorno de fachada continua, o la Casa Cubo (Maison de Ville), una obra transparente que parece romper la altura y volumetría del sector. ¿Por qué esos contrapuntos?

De verdad considero que pongo especial atención en el contexto, pero soy un arquitecto contemporáneo que trabaja hoy, con materiales y tecnologías de hoy, para usuarios de hoy y también de mañana, no de ayer. La inserción de proyectos en el tejido antiguo de manera literal no es mi métrica, porque tengo preocupación por las fuentes térmicas, la sustentabilidad y cuestiones distintas a la arquitectura de Haussmann o del castillo de Versalles. Pero sí defino relaciones con el lugar: respeto por la altura, las estructuras, el volumen, las condiciones de asoleamiento, el sistema de vida de los vecinos.

En el proyecto de los ateliers, por ejemplo, había casas retiradas de la calle, es decir, estaba el referente. El terreno se conformaba de cinco parcelas y no quería hacer allí un único edificio, quería conservar la escala de la calle. Entonces hice cinco edificios manteniendo la escala existente. El hecho de disociarlos para marcar la escala de cada parcela permite que el sol entre a los jardines. Es un proyecto extremadamente atento al contexto, pero sin mimetismo, trabaja sobre la repetición con pequeñas variaciones.

En la Casa Cubo trabajé en un terreno muy pequeño, con 110 m² disponibles para construir la casa y un estudio independiente. En la calle existía un par de edificios relativamente elevados, como también casas de dos pisos; al frente hay una pequeña colina con casas, un jardín prácticamente inaccesible y un muro contenedor de piedra 3,5 m. La geometría de la casa se define por su condición de esquina. Recoge elementos como el muro y el jardín, y define una fachada vidriada que aprovecha la zona verde del frente; del otro lado protege las vistas de los edificios vecinos con un muro horadado, al mismo tiempo que mantiene las relaciones. Lo que hice fue restituir la escala intermediaria entre las casas existentes y los edificios en esta situación de ángulo entre dos calles.

The landscaped management of rainwater and flooding is a recurring feature in projects by Katz.

- YB: The limited selection of participants is an interesting idea because actually no jury can assess, with the detention and analysis required, more than six or seven proposals. This doesn’t happen in Chile and juries evaluate many more proposals. Furthermore participation costs are not covered, leaving out many good architects beforehand.

Every work deserves reimbursement, even more so one the size of an architectural competition, which involves teams to pay and material costs besides creative energy. And regarding the number of projects to assess, if they are too many the truth is the jury ends up choosing images, leaving out poorly presented projects that could be significant.

- RL: French architecture seems to arise from a process of reflection, in which the state commits to providing work for architects when appropriate and in turn they are required to develop good architecture. How do you participate in this process?

One of the things that have marked me is the legal definition of architecture that oversees professional practice in France. The law defines architecture and the architect’s role as a work in defense of the common interest. That is, the architect is a professional who works for the general interest. This is a major element, because it has allowed architects to comment with legitimacy on urban issues and architecture, participate in discussions on the future of the city, and propose and resolve with authority.

However, much of this is in decline, and many architects are quite fearful of the direction the economy is taking in a European Union that instead of leveling up is leveling down and undermining many of the French quality specifications. If social housing was originally built by competition, today we are moving towards tender contracts.

RL: Going back to the issue of heritage recovery, how does your office participate in that discussion? Take for example the atelier complex in which you opted for creating front yards in a context of continuous façades, or the Cube House (Maison de Ville), a transparent work that seems to disrupt the height and volume of the area. Why these counterpoints?

I truly believe I put special attention to the context, but I’m a contemporary architect working today, with today’s materials and technologies for the users of today and tomorrow, not of yesterday. The literal inclusion of projects in the old fabric is not part of my standards, because I have concerns regarding heat sources, sustainability and issues that are different from those of Haussmann architecture or Versailles. But I define relationships with the site: respect for heights, structure, volume, sunlight conditions, and the system of life for residents.

In the project for the ateliers for example, some houses were set apart from the street line. The reference was right there. The site was made up of five lots and I did not want to make one single building, I wanted to maintain the scale of the street. So I made five buildings preserving the existing scale. The act of breaking them up to mark the scale of each plot allows sunshine into the gardens. It is a project that is extremely attentive to the context, but without mimicry, it works with repetition and slight variations.

In the Cube House I worked in a very small site, with 110 m² available to build the house and a separate studio. There is a pair of relatively tall buildings on the street, as well as two-story homes; facing the site there is a small hill with houses, a virtually inaccessible garden and a stone retention wall 3.5 m high. The geometry of the house is defined by its street-corner condition. It takes elements such as the wall and the garden, and defines a glazed facade that takes advantage of the green area in front; on the other side it restrains the views of neighboring buildings with a perforated wall, while maintaining the relationships. What I did was restore the intermediate scale between the existing houses and buildings in this angled situation between two streets.

Terreno de arquitectos - CAU: Muchas de sus obras incluyen parques y áreas verdes diseñados especialmente para recoger las aguas lluvia y las crecidas del río. Una de ellas es un parque dentro del río, sustentable con las manifestaciones de la naturaleza.

Lo medioambiental es fundamental, pero desgraciadamente muchas de las respuestas que se aportan son ficticias. Las cuestiones medioambientales no pueden pensarse sin tener en cuenta la relación con la ciudad y la problemática de la escala de una manzana y del barrio, la ubicación y orientación de los edificios cuyos requerimientos son distintos dependiendo del lugar. Pero las normativas aplanan todo e imponen respuestas en muchos casos absurdas, e incluso negativas desde el punto de vista medioambiental. Los arquitectos debemos invertir eso a partir de la especificidad y singularidad de cada situación, teniendo claro que cada vez que se sobredimensiona una de las entradas conceptuales del proyecto –la económica, la social, la patrimonial, la medioambiental, la tecnológica- se hace 114

en detrimento del equilibrio. El arquitecto es quien debe poner cada una de esas entradas al servicio del todo. Son cuestiones mayores y los arquitectos no tenemos derecho a perder la legitimidad que nos corresponde en esas cuestiones.

- YB: Sobre la base de su experiencia en la Sociedad Francesa de Arquitectos, ¿cómo manejan el tema de los derechos y deberes profesionales?

Debemos resistir y recuperar espacios que hemos abandonado y que son competencias propias de los arquitectos. En la SFA estamos muy involucrados en este tipo de combates. Participo en la comisión interministerial por la calidad de las construcciones públicas, dirijo un grupo de trabajo multidisciplinario que incluye a representantes de distintas especialidades de ingeniería y otras, a fin de diseñar modelos que nos permitan trabajar juntos y buscar acuerdos para proteger nuestras profesiones. Es un texto de refundación de las relaciones profesionales y entre los clientes y los profesionales de la construcción. Si queremos tener peso debemos unirnos.

The domain of architects - CAU: Many of your works include parks and green areas especially designed to collect rainwater and river risings. One of them is a park in the river, sustainable considering the manifestations of nature.

Environmental issues are essential, but unfortunately many of the solutions that are provided are fictitious. They cannot be thought out without regard to the relationship with the city and the problems of scale of the block and the neighborhood, the location and orientation of buildings whose requirements are different depending on the site. However, regulations level everything and in many cases impose absurd and even detrimental solutions from an environmental point of view. We as architects must revisit this from the specifics and uniqueness of each situation, with the awareness that every time we overstress one of the conceptual entries of the project - economical, social, heritage related, environmental, technological – it is done at the expense of the balance. The architect is the one who should put each of those entries at the service of the whole project. These are larger issues and as architects we don’t have the right to lose our legitimate role in them.

- YB: Based on your experience at the French Society of Architects, how do you handle the issue of professional rights and duties?

We must resist and regain the spaces that we have lost and that are part of the architects’ own competence and domain. In the French Society of Architects we are quite involved in this kind of struggle. I participate in the inter-ministerial commission for the quality of public buildings. I run a multidisciplinary working group that includes representatives from various engineering and other disciplines, to design models that allow us to work together and seek agreements to protect our professions. It is a new founding document for professional relationships and those between clients and construction professionals. If we want influence we must unite.

An inventive structure 140 meters high and with 11 rings designed by the office of Smiljan Radic was the winning entry for this competition organized by the Ministry of Housing, to eradicate the visual pollution caused by the proliferation of telecommunications antennas at the Santiago Metropolitan Park.

Aspectos tanto urbanos y estéticos como prácticos y tecnológicos debían abordar los proyectos participantes, ya que por una parte se buscaba generar una estructura icónica e innovadora que marcara presencia distintiva en el cerro San Cristóbal y en la ciudad y, por otra, que reuniera en una sola torre las múltiples antenas de telecomunicaciones allí instaladas, aportando de paso un nuevo espacio de carácter público al Parque Metropolitano.

En el concurso, público e internacional, participaron alrededor de 60 propuestas, 42 de ellas de oficinas locales. El jurado estuvo integrado, entre otros, por Rodrigo Pérez Mackenna, entonces titular del Ministerio de Vivienda y Urbanismo; Sebastián Gray, presidente del Colegio de Arquitectos; y Leopoldo Prat, decano de la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Chile. El jurado destacó especialmente la interacción del proyecto ganador con el emblemático monumento de la Virgen, ubicado a 600 m.

La Torre Antena Santiago tendrá 140 m de altura y 11 anillos; considera iluminación cambiante durante la noche, una terraza pública, estanque de agua, cafetería, tienda, boletería y baños públicos. El inicio de la construcción sería a comienzos del 2015 para culminar el 2017, año del centenario del Parque Metropolitano.

The participating projects were to address both urban and aesthetic as well as practical and technological aspects. On one hand they were to create an iconic and innovative structure with a distinctive presence on San Cristobal Hill and the city, and on the other, combine in a single tower the multiple telecommunication antennas located there, while providing the Metropolitan Park with a new public space.

The open and international competition gathered close to 60 proposals, 42 of them from local offices.

The jury was composed, among others, by Rodrigo Pérez Mackenna, then head of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development; Sebastián Gray, president of the Colegio de Arquitectos; and Leopoldo Prat, dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Chile. The jury underlined the interaction of the winning project with the iconic monument of the Virgin, located 600 m away.

The Santiago Antenna Tower will be 140 m high and have 11 rings; it will feature changing nocturnal lighting, a public terrace, pond, café, shop, ticket office and public restrooms. The start of construction would be in early 2015 and due in 2017, in time for the centennial of the Metropolitan Park.

Se propone construir un objeto híbrido, cuya apariencia se moverá entre una torre y una antena. Entre un cuerpo estable y reconocible, y otro que se desarma transparentando una apariencia inestable e inquieta.

Por la escala y tamaño del proyecto propuesto las lecturas obligadas para la revisión de su eficacia urbana deben ser hechas desde una distancia muy próxima y otra muy lejana. Todas las medidas intermedias cuelgan de estas como soluciones resultantes.

La antena siempre se leerá como un cuerpo transparente fuera de línea, sutilmente cambiante gracias a sus módulos estructurales en rotación, pero ordenados formalmente a través de la modulación estándar de sus componentes y de los anillos técnicos que flotan desde sus vértices formando una columna virtual en toda su altura.

De noche, cada uno de los elementos que la construyen será distinguido con una iluminación diaria cambiante en periodos semanales en su densidad y color. Esto permitirá medir el tiempo o su rutina semanal, a la manera de las antiguas torres de pueblo y sus campanas.

The project proposes the construction of a hybrid object, somewhat between a tower and an antenna, between a stable and recognizable body, and one that comes apart revealing an unstable and restless appearance.

Due to the scale and size of the proposed project the reading of its urban efficiency must be made both from a very short distance and from far away. All intermediate decisions depend on these as resulting solutions. The antenna is always read as an offset, transparent body, subtly changing due to its rotating structural modules but formally organized through the standard modulation of its components and technical rings floating from its vertices forming a virtual full-height column.

At night, each of its composing elements will be discernible through daytime illumination changing density and color every week. This will allow the track of time or weekly cycles, in the manner of old bell towers.

Bajo la antena el espacio público retoma la historia de urbanización del cerro San Cristóbal, marcada por la ocupación de sus cimas. La terraza pública, el espejo de agua negra y sus servicios (cafetería, tienda, boletería, baños públicos) conforman el espacio público como un islote sólido de pesados muros como coronación de la topografía. De esta manera se consolida un recorrido mayor dentro del Parque Metropolitano, en el cual el mirador panorámico y el observatorio forman una unidad turística con acceso peatonal desde la plaza México.

El programa se distribuye bajo el esquema placa-torre, donde todos los elementos de servicios técnicos y de apoyo a la antena están concentrados en la placa de tres niveles. La torre-antena permanece aislada como una pieza técnica, adyacente a este volumen. Los recorridos públicos siempre son exteriores y topográficos, en cambio los recorridos técnicos son interiores, ubicándose su acceso a ellos desde los estacionamientos técnicos bajo el edificio placa en el nivel 1.

La antena tiene una altura de 140 m. En ella se posicionan 11 anillos técnicos de 11,5 m de diámetro para la distribución de antenas de radio, televisión y microondas. Cada anillo posee dos niveles de antenas en su perímetro exterior (16 antenas en cada anillo).

Beneath the antenna the public space reflects the story of urbanization of San Cristobal Hill marked by the occupation of its hilltops. The public terrace, the black reflecting pool and its services (cafe, shop, ticket office, public restrooms) configure the public space as a solid island of heavy walls crowning the topography. This operation consolidates a major circulation within the Metropolitan Park where the panoramic viewpoint and observatory conform a single tourist destination, with pedestrian access from Plaza Mexico.

The program is distributed according to the tower-base scheme, where all elements of technical services and antenna support are concentrated in the three-level base. The antenna tower remains isolated as a technical piece, adjacent to this volume.

Public circulations are always external and topographic, while technical paths are internal, with access from the technical parking under the base building at level 1.

The Antenna is 140m high, with eleven technical 11.5m-diameter rings for the positioning of radio, television and microwave antennas. Each ring has two levels of antennas on its outer perimeter (16 antennas in each ring).

La “Antena Metropolitana” se origina en la proposición de una infraestructura del paisaje capaz de integrarse a su contexto inmediato, al tiempo que se relaciona con su contexto geográfico.

La propuesta avanza desde una lógica de hitos urbanos a la escala del Santiago fundacional, como son el funicular y la cumbre de la Virgen, para establecer un nuevo símbolo a escala metropolitana.

El proyecto busca ser percibido a la distancia como la construcción de una silueta cambiante, que más que elementos puntuales sobre los cerros buscan definir una continuación de ellos. Un trenzado de cables que continúa el bosque y acaba construyendo una geometría topográfica y aérea.

La mayoría de los hitos presentes en el parque, desde el observatorio Manuel Foster, el Santuario de la Inmaculada Concepción, el funicular o el teleférico han sido lugares orientados y, por ende, han establecido jerarquías en el cómo mirar la ciudad.

La propuesta, en cambio, propone una ausencia de orientación definida. Dicha condición permitirá el poder ver y ser visto desde todas las comunas, que los ciudadanos la vean desde sus barrios y los reconozcan en sus visitas, lo cual sumado a la estrategia en desarrollo para habilitar nuevos accesos irá borrando la lectura de un adelante y un atrás del cerro.

The “Metropolitan Antenna” arises from the proposal of a landscape infrastructure able to integrate into its immediate surroundings while relating to its geographical context. The proposal moves from the logic of urban landmarks at the scale of historical Santiago, such as the funicular and the summit of the Virgin, to the establishment of a new symbol on a metropolitan scale.

The project aims to be perceived in the distance as the construction of a changing silhouette that, rather than being a specific hilltop element, seeks to define a continuation of them. A braided cable that extends the forest and ends up building a topographic and aerial geometry.

Most of the landmarks present in the park, from the Manuel Foster Observatory, the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the Funicular or the cable car are oriented places and therefore have established hierarchies on how to look at the city. The proposal, however, suggests the absence of a defined orientation. This condition will allow seeing and being seen from all districts of the city. Citizens will be able to observe it from their neighborhoods while simultaneously recognize them on their visits to the place.

Added to the strategy in development to enable new accesses, this will eventually erase the perception of the hill as having a front and a back.

La propuesta define una estrategia de tocar el paisaje de manera sutil, considerando las preexistencias como patrimonio a resguardar y desarrollando una inteligencia en su lógica de situarse que define intervenciones puntuales y medidas para no generar mayor alteración. Este se basa en un centro rígido esbelto, el cual es arriostrado por finos elementos trabajando a tracción, siguiendo el principio de distribuir los esfuerzos en una mayor cantidad de elementos menores que puedan ser flexibles frente a las particularidades del terreno.

The proposal defines a strategy for subtly embracing the landscape, considering the pre-existing elements as a heritage to protect and developing an intelligence in its placement logic that defines specific interventions and measures in order to avoid further disruption. This is based on a rigid slender center, which is braced by fine tensioned elements, following the principle of distributing stresses in a large number of small elements that can be flexible encountering the particulars of the site.

El diseño de la torre tiene reminiscencias de volcanes y fenómenos ópticos como el halo y el pilar solar.

La torre se organiza a través de una distribución vertical del programa arquitectónico desplazado horizontalmente, de forma que se enfatiza su horizontalidad más que su verticalidad.

La materialidad homogénea de la torre hace referencia a su naturaleza escultural en vez de sugerir su funcionalidad y combina tanto su motivación icónica con su funcionalidad como torre de telecomunicaciones. Cada paquete programático se reconoce fácilmente por el desplazamiento del volumen que lo compone, permitiendo así que se reconozca cada parte funcional de la torre a simple vista. La forma de la torre toma significado y es dominada por un gran anillo panorámico de 85 m de diámetro que sobrevuela la Cumbre de las Antenas. Al caer la noche, el anillo se ilumina, actuando como un halo sobre la cumbre que disipa su significado funcional y adquiere una presencia sutil en el paisaje nocturno de la ciudad.

The tower design is reminiscent of volcanoes and optical phenomena such as halos and sun pillars.

The tower is organized through a vertical distribution of the horizontally shifted architectural programs, so that the horizontal condition is emphasized over the vertical. The homogeneous material of the tower refers to its sculptural nature instead of suggesting functionality – it combines both its iconic motivation and its functionality as telecommunications tower. Each program unit is easily recognized in the displaced volume that houses it, allowing each functional part of the tower to be recognized at first glance. The shape of the tower acquires meaning and is dominated by a large panoramic ring 85 m in diameter that flies over the Summit of the Antennas. By nightfall, the ring lights up, acting as a halo on the hilltop that dispels its functional meaning and acquires a subtle presence in the nocturnal city landscape.

El programa arquitectónico de distribuye a través de círculos excéntricos apilados unos sobre otros en base a paquetes programáticos. En la planta baja (0,00 m) está la zona de acceso de visitantes y sus programas relacionados. Así, en una planta diáfana, encontramos la cafetería, tienda, boletería, lavabos y el núcleo de acceso a la terraza panorámica. En su lado este también aparece el acceso técnico de servicio, que da directamente al montacargas para el mantenimiento de la torre. Alrededor de esta planta se ubica el estanque superior de agua de riego de forma de lámina de agua que refleja la torre y conecta con el terreno. Se accede a través de un puente sobre el estanque que es a su vez el final de un recorrido serpenteante que conduce al visitante desde el aparcamiento a la base de la torre.

The architectural program is distributed in eccentric circles stacked on top of each other on the basis of program units. The area of visitor access and related programs are on the ground floor (0.00 m). A clear plan organizes the cafe, shop, ticket-office, restrooms and access core to the panoramic terrace. On its east side, the technical service access leads directly to the maintenance lift of the tower. The upper irrigation pond surrounds this plan as a sheet of water reflecting the tower and connecting to the site.

A bridge over the pond provides access, which is in turn the end of a winding path that leads visitors from the parking to the base of the tower.

El primer lugar lo obtuvo HLPS, con un edificio de 5.600 m² que aspira a convertirse en un hito del lugar.

The competition defined a blueprint for the new faculty building at the Isla Teja Campus in Valdivia. The first place went to HLPS, with a 5,600 m² building that aspires to become a campus landmark.

Aspecto gravitante en la evaluación de las propuestas fue su adecuada integración con el entorno, tanto construido como natural, dando cuenta de la importancia urbana del emplazamiento. El sector de la Av. Eduardo Morales donde se situará el nuevo edificio tiene características de centro urbano del campus, por lo que debía considerar lugares públicos de intercambio y un diseño que constituyera un aporte a la imagen total del enclave.

En el proyecto ganador se valoró su claridad conceptual y estructural. Consiste en un cubo de nueve pisos girado respecto a la calle principal del campus. Su planta libre con un vacío central cubierto permite acoger la totalidad del programa y una correcta disposición funcional entre sus partes. La altura y posición del volumen confiere un valor icónico al edificio que se articula bien con las áreas verdes circundantes y con el Edificio Emilio Pugin.

Considering the urban importance of the location, the gravitating aspect in the evaluation of the proposals was the appropriate integration with the built and natural surroundings. The Eduardo Morales Avenue sector where the new building will be located is characterized as the urban center of the campus. Therefore the proposals were to consider public meeting places and a design that would contribute to the overall image of the area.

The winning project presented clarity of concept and structure. It consists of a nine-story rotated cube relative to the main street of the campus. Its open floor plan with a covered central void can accommodate the entire program and an accurate functional arrangement of its parts. The height and position of the volume gives the building an iconic value that is well articulated with the surrounding green areas and the Emilio Pugin Building.

Master plan proposal based on the construction of two free-standing buildings of 11,200 m² in total, with the smallest possible footprint to preserve all existing trees and transforming the block into a park within the campus.

El campus es todavía una agrupación de construcciones dentro de un parque y construye con esto su propio valor, el cual va más allá de edificios entendidos como piezas aisladas. Cualquier desarrollo futuro debiera mantener esta condición y por lo tanto la escala adecuada de intervención está dada en cuanto cuide el territorio y se mantenga como intervención puntual dentro del paisaje.

The campus still manages to group a valuable set of buildings in a park, with units that go beyond being understood as isolated parts. Any future development was to maintain this condition.

The appropriate scale of intervention is therefore the one that preserves the existing order and represents a specific intervention in the landscape.

El sitio definido para el edificio de la Facultad de Ciencias presenta, dentro de la urbanización del campus, una situación privilegiada desde dos puntos de vista: - Por una parte se ubica en un sector alto dentro de la Isla, el cual aparece justo al terminar la Alameda de acceso al Campus, por lo cual es un lugar muy visible y que constituye potencialmente una puerta interior al campus.

- Por otra parte, el sector de la Av. Eduardo Morales tiene características de centro urbano, encontrándose los edificios de la biblioteca, el casino y otros servicios comunitarios de la universidad, por lo cual presenta gran potencial de uso como espacio público o centro universitario.

Frente al primer punto, el proyecto plantea la creación de un hito vertical a través de un volumen alto, el cual aporte como imagen y construya una nueva referencia a escala geográfica. En relación al terreno como potencial centro universitario, se plantea la creación de una plaza pública con superficies puntuales secas que albergan mesas y bancos, para que en ella se desarrolle la vida universitaria fuera de las salas. Para esto mantiene el 87% de la superficie del terreno desocupada y el 100% de los árboles existentes.

Within the urban design of the campus the site defined for the building of the Faculty of Science has a privileged situation from two perspectives: - On the one hand it is located in a high area of the island, appearing at the end of the tree-lined access road to the campus, a very visible site and potentially a door to the whole complex.

- Moreover, the area of Eduardo Morales Avenue has the features of an urban center, lodging the library, dining hall and other university communal services. It has therefore great potential for use as a public space or University Center.

Regarding to the first item, the project proposes the creation of a Vertical Landmark by means of a tall volume that contributes a new image and geographical reference. Regarding the potential of the site as university center, the project proposes a public square with limited paved areas with tables and benches to harbor college life outside the classrooms. To achieve this, 87% of the surface of the plot is left vacant and 100% of the existing trees are preserved.

A través de una serie de recorridos cubiertos que conectan el edificio con las calles principales adyacentes se plantea generar un sistema de recorridos públicos que rodee al nuevo edificio pero que permita, más allá de su propio programa, la conexión entre la Av. Eduardo Morales con el sector oriente y sur del terreno en el cual hoy se ubican el Instituto y Escuela de Biología Marina, Turismo, la sala cuna y el Invernadero Kay. El proyecto busca principalmente implementar sistemas pasivos para acondicionar los espacios. Estos se resumen principalmente en la conservación de la energía, la obtención de ganancia solar directa y ventilación natural. El volumen comprimido del edificio produce un mejor aprovechamiento de las energías pasivas, así como un mejor aprovechamiento del calor entregado por sistemas de calefacción.

A series of covered walkways connecting the main building with the adjacent main streets generate a System of Public Circulations to surround the new building while allowing –in addition to its own programmatic requirements– the connection between Eduardo Morales Avenue and the area east and south of the site where the Institute and School of Marine Biology, Tourism, the nursery and the Kay Greenhouse are located today.

The project primarily aims to implement passive systems to condition the spaces. These are mainly summarized in the conservation of energy, the production of solar gains and natural ventilation. The compact volume of the building makes better use of passive energy sources and a more efficient use of the heating systems.

La imagen principal de los edificios, en la Isla Teja y en la mayoría de los campus de la universidad, es de circulaciones techadas.

Antes que los edificios en sí se ven estos techos. Circula por ellos y muchas veces entra a los edificios sin apreciarlos porque la única perspectiva es la de la cubierta. Entonces, ¿cómo hacer de esta imagen la imagen de un edificio?

Se tomó la imagen del techo y se creó una plaza techada, llamada Plaza de las Ideas, hacia la calle principal. De esta forma, el techo ya no es aquel pasillo con estructura de acero y fibrocemento, sino un lugar de encuentro cubierto y protegido del viento. Junto a esta se instaló el Pabellón de los Estudiantes, conectado y en el mismo nivel que la plaza. El Edificio de Investigación, retirado de la calle principal, permite mantener la escala de los edificios existentes y crear una imagen que se verá desde el río. Con la futura ubicación de los estacionamientos, todo aquel que llegue en auto al campus cruzará por este edificio, transformándose así en un nuevo pórtico de entrada.

The fundamental image of the buildings in Teja Island and in most of the college campuses is of roofed circulations. These roofs are seen before the buildings themselves. People walk through them and often enter without appreciating the buildings since the only perspective is that of the roof. So, how to turn this into the image of a building?

This image of this roof was used to create a covered plaza, called Plaza de Las Ideas, Square of the Ideas, towards the main street.

Thus, the roof is no longer the corridor structured in steel and fiber cement panels, but a covered meeting place, sheltered from the wind. Alongside sits the Student Pavilion, with a direct connection and on the same level as the plaza. The Research Building, off the main street, follows the scale of existing buildings and creates an image that will be seen from across the river. With the future location of parking, everybody coming to the campus by car will cross this building, thus becoming a new entrance portico.

Como consecuencia de esta operación, se propone un edificio eficiente y concentrado, con un sistema de estructura tradicional de marco rígido y muros en base a hormigón con tintes negros.

Las lamas de las fachadas y las del techo de la plaza serán prefabricadas. Estas dos decisiones permiten que el paso del tiempo no afecte la imagen del edificio.

En el interior se plantean lugares de encuentros relacionados con el espacio. Los cielos acústicos con madera de la zona entregarán una imagen muy cálida y amable, pero a su vez resolverán técnicamente el edificio.

As a result of this operation, the project proposes an efficient and concentrated building, with a system of traditional structure of concrete rigid frames and black-tinted walls. The facade and roof tiles of the square will be prefabricated. These two decisions ensure the passage of time will not affect the image of the building.

Inside, meeting places are related to the space. Acoustical ceilings with local wood provide a very warm and friendly image, while providing a technical solution to the building.

The key feature of the Teja Island Campus is its balanced relationship between landscape, vegetation and buildings, providing an important part of its identity. We aim for a balance in the spatial relationship between architecture, construction and nature.

Ideas principales - Emplazamiento: el edificio contiene tres grandes apoyos, núcleos de ingreso para cada uno de los tres institutos.

- Relación con el entorno: se deja un primer piso despejado para garantizar la continuidad visual con el entorno paisajístico y la integración con la vegetación y edificios existentes. También se piensa en futuras reposiciones de edificios, y que estos últimos se integren armónicamente.

- Funcionalidad: se propone un edificio en 7 niveles. Las oficinas y laboratorios son tratados como plantas libres para que puedan adecuarse a los cambios y requerimientos futuros. Se produce una circulación vertical central de escalera con ascensor para cada facultad, y una circulación horizontal de pasillo central que distribuye oficinas y laboratorios. Cada facultad controla su punto de ingreso, pero comparte conexiones horizontales en pisos superiores.

- Espacio ingreso: se propone un espacio de ingreso fluido, accesible desde diferentes lugares y direcciones. Un espacio intermedio cerrado virtualmente con mamparas de cristal que converge en un espacio central de siete alturas, Plaza de Las Ciencias, cubierta traslúcida superior. Aquí se produce un espacio de ingreso común.

Main Ideas - Location: The building has three large supports, the entrance cores for each of the three institutes.

- Relationship with the environment: The first level is cleared to ensure visual continuity with the surrounding landscape and integration with existing buildings and vegetation. The future replacement of buildings is considered, to be harmoniously integrated.

- Functionality: The proposal presents a seven-story building.

The offices and laboratories are designed as open plans that can adapt to changes and future requirements. A central vertical circulation with stairs and elevator is provided for each faculty, and a horizontal central circulation corridor organizes offices and laboratories. Each faculty controls its entry point, but shares horizontal connections in the upper floors.

- Entrance space: A fluid access space is proposed, accessible from different places and directions. An intermediate space, virtually enclosed by glass partitions, converges in a seven-story central area, the Science Plaza, with a translucent cover. It is a common entrance space.

- Volumen: se propone una volumetría sencilla y compacta de siete alturas, con una imagen contemporánea. El tratamiento de los vanos es cristal de piso a cielo en la parte central, Plaza de Las Ciencias; todos se miran unos a otros, simbólicamente se comparte el conocimiento. Los exteriores se consideran antepechos para acomodar mesones de laboratorios y controlar luz exterior.

- Fachadas: son tratadas con una membrana unificadora, un quiebra vista metálico del tipo acero corten, que regule sus perforaciones de acuerdo a su orientación.

- Paisajismo: el edificio tendrá principal cuidado en incorporar la naturaleza, como una transición permeable y fluida a nivel de primer piso, y como escala macro a la altura de las especies arbóreas existentes del lugar.

- Servicios: los servicios comunes que comparten las tres facultades (bodegas, calderas, etc.) se ubican en un piso subterráneo para garantizar su fácil accesibilidad y facilidad de uso.

- Volume: The project proposes a simple, compact seven-story volume with a contemporary image. The façades are designed with floor to ceiling glass in the central area of the Science Plaza.

Everybody looks at each other, and knowledge is symbolically shared. The outer façades have windowsills to accommodate laboratory counters and control natural light.

- Façades: They feature a unifying membrane, a metal shading device in corten steel with perforations according to exposure.

- Landscaping: The building will take special care to incorporate nature as a permeable and fluid transition on the first level, and at a greater scale to match the height of existing tree species.

- Services: The common services shared by the three faculties (storage areas, boilers, etc.) are located in an underground level to ensure easy accessibility and use.

El volumen propuesto es delgado y alargado a la manera de una “pantalla” que retrocede para liberar a la esquina y contener un atrio de acceso, no solo a sí mismo sino al campus. Este espacio vacío se relaciona de manera generosa, tanto con el edificio de la Biblioteca Central como con los frondosos árboles ubicados en la esquina norponiente del predio. El vacío del acceso contenido por la biblioteca y el nuevo edificio de “Ciencias II” constituye el cabezal de la Av. Rector Dr. Eduardo Morales Miranda, eje ordenador de los edificios más emblemáticos del campus. La propuesta deja plantada la idea de intervención de este eje a través de cambios de pavimentos y la eliminación de estructuras secundarias que hoy subsisten de manera precaria.

The proposed volume is a thin and elongated “screen” that steps back to open up the corner and contain an access atrium, not only for itself but also for the campus. This empty space generously relates both to the Central Library building as well as to the leafy trees located in the northwestern corner of the property. The empty access space, contained by the library and the new “Sciences II” building, is the head of the Rector Dr. Eduardo Morales Miranda Avenue, organizing axis of the most representative buildings of the campus. The project proposes the intervention of this axis by means of pavement changes and the elimination of precarious existing secondary structures.

concurso / competition Arquitectura Caliente 2014, proyectos de pregrado Arquitectura Caliente 2014, undergraduate projects El Grupo Arquitectura Caliente convocó a estudiantes de 2° a 4° año de más de 20 escuelas de arquitectura de todo el país a participar en la primera versión del Concurso Nacional de Proyectos de Pregrado CNPP. The Arquitectura Caliente group summoned 2nd to 4th year students of more than 20 schools of architecture around the country to participate in the first version of the National Undergraduate Project Competition - CNPP.

En este concurso de arquitectura joven se evaluaron 47 proyectos desarrollados por estudiantes, de los cuales se escogió un Gran Ganador por nivel, además de seis ganadores y dos menciones honrosas. Ganadores de la categoría principal fueron alumnos de la Universidad de Chile (2do año), Universidad Católica (3er año) y Universidad Mayor de Santiago (4to año).

La organización del concurso estuvo a cargo de la AOA, con el arquitecto Pablo Gil como director. El jurado fue integrado por Sebastián Gray, Felipe Soffia, Cristóbal Molina, Pilar Barba, Alberto Fernández, Blanca Zúñiga, Enzo Vergara, José Tomás Franco y Rayna Razmilic, quienes entregaron fundamentadas críticas a los proyectos finalistas.

Este certamen se extiende al Concurso Nacional de Proyectos de Título CNPT, también convocado por el Grupo Arquitectura Caliente y con la organización de la AOA.

This young architecture competition evaluated 47 projects by undergraduate students, with one Grand Winner chosen by level, plus six additional winners and two honorable mentions. The main category winners were students of the Universidad de Chile (2nd year), Catholic University (3rd year) and Universidad Mayor of Santiago (4th year).

The organization of the competition was conducted by the AOA, with architect Pablo Gil as director. The jury was composed of Sebastián Gray, Felipe Soffia, Cristóbal Molina, Pilar Barba, Alberto Fernández, Blanca Zúñiga, Enzo Vergara, José Tomás Franco and Rayna Razmilic, who all gave informed criticism of the finalist projects.

This event follows the National Degree Project Competition - CNPT, also summoned by the Arquitectura Caliente group and organized by the AOA.

Tras evaluar se escoge un terreno que pertenece a la Villa Fresia para generar un proyecto de vivienda colectiva que rehabilite el sector.

Las viviendas deben seguir la lógica del conjunto pre-existente.

El proyecto busca dar una nueva estética a la zona, manteniendo leyes formales y criterios propios del lugar. El concepto que se buscó potenciar es el de espacios comunes, siendo cinco módulos (40 viviendas) de hormigón armado, abiertos por sus caras oriente y poniente; en su parte superior presentan un espacio de uso múltiple y en conjunto generan un patio duro respetando dimensiones del conjunto existente.

After proper evaluation the site chosen is part of the Villa Fresia community, with the purpose of generating a collective housing project to renew the area. The housing must follow the logic of the pre existing complex.

The project seeks to provide the area with a new aesthetic, maintaining the formal laws and criteria of the place. The concept to enhance is that of common spaces, with five modules (40 homes) of reinforced concrete, open at their east and west sides; on the top end they present a multipurpose space and together they create a hardscape courtyard following the dimensions of the existing complex.

Se propone un programa público/privado de acuerdo a la configuración del barrio, manteniendo leyes formales propias del lugar. Si bien el conjunto preexistente contiene un espacio de reunión vecinal (plaza), este carece de la permeabilidad necesaria para congregar un mayor número de personas. El proyecto además busca generar un traspaso fluido entre los actores públicos y privados, sin perder la intimidad propia de un conjunto habitacional.

El jurado destacó el nivel mostrado por el trabajo: “Se demuestran nociones de dimensionamiento y calidad de espacios interiores y exteriores. Desarrollo de diferentes escalas de proyecto. Buen desarrollo gráfico”.

A public/private program is proposed according to the configuration of the neighborhood and preserving the formal laws specific to the site. Although the existing complex has a neighborhood meeting space (square), it lacks the necessary permeability to attract a greater number of people. The project also seeks to create a smooth transfer between public and private actors, without losing the very intimacy of a housing complex.

The jury noted the level shown by the work: “notions of sizing and quality of indoor and outdoor spaces are shown … development of different scales of the project … good graphic presentation”.

La propuesta se emplaza en la localidad de Cutipay, en la costa valdiviana, apoyándose en este núcleo rural-urbano y colaborando a potenciar su carácter turístico y cultural. Esta nace del entendimiento de la arquitectura militar y de la reinterpretación de esta dentro de un contexto actual. Volumétricamente los programas representan encajes independientes dentro de una misma envolvente, otorgando al proyecto una riqueza espacial que permite conformar espacios por medio de las dificultades que esta estrategia presenta, a la vez que posibilita un adecuado control de iluminación, y una libertad expositiva en el interior.

The proposal is located in the town of Cutipay on the Valdivia coast, is supported by this rural-urban core and contributes to the enhancement of its tourist and cultural character. It rises from the understanding of military architecture and its reinterpretation within a current context. In volume, the programs represent independent couplings within the same enclosure, giving the project a spatial richness that enables the configuration of spaces through the difficulties presented by this strategy. At the same time it facilitates an adequate lighting control and flexibility for interior exhibitions.

Si bien la reproducción de arquitectura militar hoy en día parece un hecho ineficiente y costoso, propone una serie de características y patrones reinterpretables a las necesidades actuales.

- Bunker: representa la masa en su generalidad, otorga la posibilidad de convertir el lleno (hormigón) en un primer programa, y el vacío en su interior en otro programa, es a la vez volumen opaco cuyas vistas son privilegiadas en busca de un horizonte.

- Baluarte: se caracteriza por una geometría estrellada buscando generar el mayor perímetro en el menor espacio posible. Esto puede reinterpretarse para otorgar la mayor cantidad de caras de exposición y de almacenaje.

En su selección el jurado destacó el avanzado desarrollo de este proyecto, la calidad gráfica y la consistencia argumentativa: “Logra riqueza espacial a través del control de las aberturas de la envolvente. Espacios interiores bien pensados, en función del programa interior”.

Whereas the reproduction of military architecture seems an inefficient and costly action today, it poses a series of features and patterns adaptable to current needs.

- The Bunker: it represents mass as a generality; it gives the possibility of converting fullness (concrete) into a first program, and the interior void into another program. At the same time it is an opaque volume where views are privileged in search of a horizon.

- The Bastion: characterized by a starred geometry seeking to generate the greatest perimeter in the smallest possible space.

This can be reinterpreted to provide the greatest amount of exhibition surfaces and storage areas.

In selecting the jury highlighted the advanced development of this project, the graphic quality and consistency of argumentation: “It achieves spatial richness through the control of the enclosure openings. Well thought interior spaces regarding the internal program”.

Debido a una mala planificación urbana, se detecta una grave falta de espacios públicos y zonas verdes dentro de Valparaíso, siendo estos espacios residuales de la edificación. El proyecto habla de una dualidad de conceptos en todos los sentidos.

La estrategia del proyecto está íntimamente ligada a la estrategia urbana, de forma de que el museo se entierra conectando los dos terrenos existentes de forma subterránea, bajo calle Serrano.

Se generan elementos de luz y visión, que junto con los patios enfatizan la idea de llenos y vacíos y la relación entre el interior y el exterior.

Due to poor urban planning, Valparaíso has a serious lack of public spaces and green areas other than residual spaces between buildings. The project speaks of a duality of concepts in every sense.

The project strategy is closely linked to the urban strategy. Therefore the museum is buried under Serrano Street connecting the two existing plots. Elements of light and vision are generated and emphasize, with the patios, the idea of full and empty spaces and the relationship between interior and exterior.

El proyecto cede diferentes áreas a nivel de la calle, como espacios de uso colectivo. Se consigue así crear un nuevo ritmo de carácter urbano entre la plaza Echaurren y la plaza Sotomayor. Mediante el uso de las líneas de la fachada del palacio se crea un ‘cosido’ de la calle Serrano llevándolas al tratamiento de los suelos.

En el lobby se encuentra la exposición introductoria de Valparaíso, dando acceso al recorrido principal del museo que se entiende como un recorrido entre dos desde el terreno del cerro hasta el Palacio Subercaseaux. Las salas temáticas se organizan en bandas longitudinales que dirigen los flujos, con un recorrido en zig-zag marcado en su inicio por una torre de luz. La zona más privada corresponde a las oficinas, taller y zonas de instalaciones.

El jurado destacó la potencia del proyecto: “La operación arquitectónica propuesta de enterrarse y ocupar el terreno opuesto es clave. Se demuestra una madurez del estudiante, tiene una visión real de la estructura. Resuelve bien la analogía de la iluminación y la historia del inmigrante, lo que genera riqueza espacial. Discurso coherente. Sabe presentar el proyecto y diagramar la información que entrega”.

The project cedes different areas as communal spaces at street level. A new rhythm of an urban character is therefore created between Echaurren and Sotomayor Squares. Using the lines of the palace façade a ‘stitching’ of sorts is made on Serrano Street by projecting them onto the paving design.

The lobby lodges the introductory exhibition of Valparaíso and gives access to the main museum circulation, meant as a journey between both the site on the hill and Subercaseaux Palace.

The themed halls are arranged in longitudinal strips that direct the flows in a zigzag path marked at the onset by a light tower.

The more private areas are for offices, workshops and service installations.

The jury emphasized the power of the project: “The proposed architectural operation of burying and occupying the opposite site is key. This shows the maturity of the student with a real vision of structure. He adequately solves the analogy between lighting and the history of the immigrant, generating spatial richness.

With a coherent discourse, he knows how to present the project and diagram the provided information”.

Anuario AOA 2012-2013

Este nuevo libro del Premio Nacional de Arquitectura Enrique Browne reúne una serie de trabajos suyos acerca de arquitectura, cinco de ellos ya publicados en distintos medios más dos ensayos inéditos preparados especialmente para la publicación. En conjunto, los textos proponen una mirada a la dimensión social y artística de la profesión, destacando su importancia para la calidad de vida de las personas e invitando a reflexionar y construir un discurso en relación a ella.

Los escritos se alejan de la redacción académica a fin de acercar la visión del autor al público no especializado.

Con prólogo del arquitecto y académico Fernando Pérez Oyarzún, el libro busca poner el tema de la arquitectura en el debate público, tanto como arte y como profesión.

A través de imágenes, planos e historia, este proyecto editorial del Área de Arquitectura del CNCA recopila 35 representativos concursos de arquitectura, como parte de un programa que busca fomentar la calidad de la disciplina y evidencia la importancia de los concursos en su desarrollo.

Entre las innumerables experiencias se cubren casi 120 años, de 1895 a 2013, visibilizando el patrimonio urbano, cultural y social que fue conformándose a partir de concursos de arquitectura. Algunos de ellos: Reconstrucción Congreso Nacional (1895), Museo y Escuela de Bellas Artes (1903), Club de la Unión (1912), Escuela de Derecho Universidad de Chile (1934), Colegio del Verbo Divino (1948), la Embajada de Chile en Buenos Aires (1965), Edificio Shell (1984), el GAM y el Museo de la Memoria (2007) y el Edificio anexo Museo Histórico Nacional (2013).

Esta publicación bianual de la Asociación de Oficinas de Arquitectos congrega las mejores obras construidas por los socios en los últimos dos años. Por el volumen de obras publicadas -alrededor de un centenar, escogidas por cada oficina-, el Anuario constituye una muestra relevante de arquitectura chilena reciente. Cada obra se muestra en doble página, con fotos a todo color que buscan dar cuenta del programa, complementadas por una planta general y detalles técnicos. Este es el sexto volumen de la serie.

Borges and Neruda, Architects

This new book by National Architecture Prize Enrique Browne, brings together a number of his writings on architecture, five of them already published in different media and two unpublished essays especially prepared for this publication. Together, the texts suggest a vision of the social and artistic dimension of the profession, highlighting its relevance in the quality of life of people and inviting reflection and the construction of a related discourse. The writing style is far from academic in order to bring the vision of the author to a non-specialized audience.

With a foreword by architect and academic Fernando Pérez Oyarzún, the book aims to place the issue of architecture in the public debate, both as art and as a profession.

Architecture competitions in Chile

Through images, plans and history, this editorial project by the Department of Architecture of the CNCA contains 35 representative architectural competitions as part of a program to promote the quality of the discipline, and reveals the significance of competitions in its development.

Among the countless experiences almost 120 years are covered, from 1895 to 2013, making visible the urban, cultural and social heritage being built through architectural competitions. Some of them: Reconstruction of the National Congress (1895), Museum and School of Fine Arts (1903), the Union Club (1912), School of Law at the University of Chile (1934), Divine Word School (1948), the Embassy of Chile in Buenos Aires (1965), Shell Building (1984), GAM and the Museum of Memory (2007) and the National Historical Museum Annex Building (2013).

AOA Yearbook 2012-2013

This biannual publication by the Architectural Office Association brings together the best-built works by the partners of the past two years. For its volume of published works – close to a hundred, chosen by each office - the Yearbook is a relevant sample of recent Chilean architecture. Each work is displayed in a double page, with full-color photos that seek to account for the program, in addition to a general plan and technical details. This is the sixth volume in the series.
