Se abre un nuevo hall entre el patio de los Bomberos y el patio del edificio histórico: la construcción de un vacío interior de 17x17x14 m es la operación principal del proyecto. Seis caras relacionan y configuran los nuevos programas con el edificio existente y con el centro de la manzana. - Cara sur: muro histórico. El carácter interior del recinto, sin lluvia, permite exhibir el muro histórico desprovisto de estuco. Se transparenta la materialidad del edificio y la nobleza de su construcción, enfrentando la antigua técnica de albañilería de cal y canto de 1804 con la nueva edificación. - Cara poniente: tres salones de Exposición. Las medidas de 21x11x4,5 m de cada recinto permiten otorgar el rango de salón. En el primer subsuelo, los laboratorios participan del espacio central a través de patios ingleses, constituyéndose como vitrinas públicas de las actividades interiores. - Cara norte: las circulaciones. Una escalera escultórica relaciona todos los niveles, conectando las distintas salas y programas del Museo. La cara norte está suspendida, configurando a nivel del hall un vano que relaciona el patio de los Bomberos con el Museo. Por último una sala de exposiciones se entrecruza en todo el alto del vacío con las circulaciones. 116
A new hall is created between the courtyard of the Fire Station and the courtyard of the historic building: the construction of a 17x17x14 m interior void is the main operation of the project. Six faces relate and organize the new programs with the existing building and the heart of the block. - South side: The historic wall. The interior character of the premise, protected from the rain, permits the display of the historic wall devoid of stucco. The materiality of the building and the nobility of its construction become transparent, contrasting the ancient art of masonry of 1804 with the new construction. - West side: Three exhibition halls. Measuring 21x11x4.5 m, each room has the dignity of a grand hall. On the first basement, the laboratories participate in the central space by means of light wells, becoming public showcases of the internal activities. - North face: Circulations. A sculptural staircase connects all levels, connecting the various rooms and programs of the Museum. The north face is suspended; therefore creating a void at the main hall level that relates the Fire Station court with the Museum. Finally, an exhibition space follows the circulations throughout the full height of the void.
