Pioneering Artists The pioneering artist project was a group project to showcase the life and works of a famous figure in the design world who was a pioneer of their time. My partner was Antonia Antonelli, and we researched Edmund bacon. Edmund Bacon was a city planner and helped shape Philadelphia into what it is today. Bacon was also the first city planner to ever be on the cover of Time magazine.

Project 1: Form, Space + Order: Analytical Investigations Projetc 1 focused on researching a chosen house, which would be used for the entire semester. The chosen house was the Case Study House #8, also known as the Eames House. The purpose of this project was to develop skills in site analysis and research, while also developing an appreciation of architecture of the 20th century.

Project 2: Concept and Color : Material and Theory, Phenomenon, Organization + Space Projetc 2 was a continuation of project 1. It branched off into the abstract concepts that made up the mother house. Project 2 caused for deeper thinking into how can these concepts be shown through diagrams and models. Project 2 required three concepts. They were structure, pattern, and solid/void. The main concept focused on was structure.

Project 3: Precedent + Invention, Structure + Intention: Imaging Research as Architecture + Space Project 3 incorporated the skills learned in Projects 1 and 2, to create a new house on a site on campus. The objective was to make a community of newly designed houses with the other students in the class. The new house did not have to resemble the mother house, but it had to keep concepts and correlate in some ways. This project included multiple site visits, coordination with students, several drawings, and multiple models.

Semester Summary This semester taught me a lot throughout each project. Every project was intertwined, focusing on different aspects of the same overall subject. Each project related to the Case Study house in some way. Project 1 centered on researching and analysis of a site. Project 2 emphasized looking at the house through an abstract way to develop key concepts. Project 3 took those key concepts and skills to creatively design a new house on a plot of land. Throughout all of this I gained a new appreciation of the architecture before my time through studying a 20th century house, and from the Pioneering Designer project. I noticed that the first semester taught the basic skills needed to be an architect, while the second semester was like a real-life project. All of the skills I’ve learned this semester were valuable and will help me later on.
