Historic Trappe will be hosting an Early American Craft Fair on Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This special artisan show will be held at St. Luke’s, located at 200 W. Main St. in Trappe, Pa. Admission will be $10. Visitors may talk to the artists about their work and historical inspirations while shopping for handcrafted items and treasures that include pottery, woodcarvings, textiles, furniture, painted boxes, and fraktur, among other items.
All the proceeds will benefit Historic Trappe, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve and share historic places, landscapes, and heritage of southeastern Pennsylvania. Historic Trappe proudly supports traditional artisans throughout the year in its museum store and exhibits fine Americana and folk art in its museums.
Show admission includes free guided tours of Historic Trappe’s Center for Pennsylvania German Studies and the Muhlenberg House, located just across the street from the show.

By Karl Pass
Celebrate the return of live performance at The Frick Collection. Since 1938, the Frick’s concert series has captivated audiences with performances by world-class soloists, chamber groups, and pioneering early music ensembles. Following a hiatus during the institution’s renovation and enhancement, the series returns in the new Stephen A. Schwarzman Auditorium, opening in April.
The museum will present a two-week music festival, April 26 to May 11, inaugurating this new auditorium. Audiences are invited to experience an expansive program of baroque, classical, and 20th- and 21-century music, presented by extraordinary soloists and ensembles.

Premier Military Auction Results Confederate Officer’s Sword Brings $22,000
Milestone’s first Premier Military Auction of 2025 commanded collectors’ attention with 705 lots of high-quality items that tracked a 250-year timeline from the Revolutionary War through the modern-war era. The Jan. 18 auction took in a hefty $725,000 and was led by an exciting, freshto-the-market discovery: a rare, untouched and well-preserved original Confederate sword made by Thomas Leech of Memphis, Tenn.
Of a type known as a “floating CS” staff and field officer’s sword, the coveted Thomas Leech production featured a 30-inch blade identified to, and engraved with the name of, Lieut. W. B. Spencer 31st, Regt. Tenn. Vols. It was a recent discovery that crowned a selection of approximately one dozen Confederate entries and sold for $22,000. Its presale estimate had been set at $10,000-$15,000.
In addition to Confederate items, there were many desirable Union pieces available. A Civil War officer’s shabraque, a decorative saddle cover, was reflective of a style used by the European light cavalry in the 18th and 19th centuries but American-manufactured in

distinctive U.S. Union colors. Created from midnight-blue wool, lined in oil cloth and trimmed with gold braid and black leather edging, the attractive equine accessory was bid to $3,813 against an estimate of $500-$1,000.
The most active auction category was World War II relics, especially those emblematic of the Nazi Party. The top lot within the specialty classification was a trunk grouping originally belonging to WWII Nazi German Panzer General and Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves recipient Fridolin von Senger und Etterlin. The trunk’s contents included a tailored, Italian-made wood uniform comprised of a tunic, trousers and cap, plus leather marching boots, a buckled belt, dagger, and many other

military accessories and items of ephemera. Formerly displayed at the now-closed AAF Tank Museum in Danville, Va., this trunk grouping sold for $15,990 against an estimate of $6,000-$10,000.
From the Italian side of the Axis of Evil came a WWII MVSN (Fascist militia) general’s
M1933 helmet displaying a highly-visible painted image of a large, age-toned gold Roman eagle holding a fasces (a bundle of rods with a projecting axe blade). This avian depiction was an emblem of authority both in Fascist Italy and, many centuries earlier, in Ancient Rome. Estimated at $500-$1,000, it attracted 67 bids before retiring at $5,166. The bottom of flag shows insignia of the Battalion as well as Battle Honors of the 33rd Division with its insignia. It sold for $3,567 against a $500-$800 estimate.
This WWII A-2-patched flight jacket was worn by J.B. Bass while a pilot with the U.S. 1st Combat Cargo Group, 1st Squadron, an outfit that flew dangerous supply missions in Asian combat zones. The jacket is decorated with several China-Burma-India Theater leather insignias on its front and a large American Flag and blood chit on its back. Made in 1936, suggesting Bass may have been an early member of the Army Air Corps, the jacket sold above high estimate for $5,535.

This battalion saw significant action in the Pacific theater, incurring 2,426 battle casualties. Another 396 of its troops were wounded in action, one was taken as a prisoner of war, and there were 2,024 MIAs. The bottom of this important flag shows both the battalion’s insignia and Battle Honors of the 33rd Division with its own insignia. Against a $500-$800 estimate, the unique memento rose to $3,567.
After the hammer fell on the final lot, Milestone Auctions’ co-owner and principal auctioneer Miles King remarked, “We were very pleased with the results of this sale. It was a good, solid lineup with the types of rare and
interesting pieces collectors want. Several bidders complimented us on the catalog descriptions, many of which were quite in-depth. Much of the enjoyment of owning any piece of antique or vintage militaria comes from knowing as much of its history as possible. It can be very time-consuming for our experts, but they are committed to leaving no stone unturned in digging up the fine details.”

Major Gift Announced To Museum
Latest Contribution Following Decades Of Support
The American Folk Art Museum revealed details about a new gift of masterworks from the collection of Audrey B. Heckler, a longtime and beloved AFAM trustee who passed away in 2024, which will significantly enhance and expand the museum’s collection of self-taught art.
The gift from the estate of Audrey B. Heckler, the first announced since her passing last year, comprises dozens of masterpieces by renowned self-taught artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, including Alo Ïse Corbaz, William Edmondson, Madge Gill, Morris Hirshfield, Mart Í n Ram Í rez, and Adolf W Ö lfli, among many others.
The announcement marks the latest of many significant gifts, now totaling nearly 150 works of art, to the museum by Ms. Heckler between 2015 and 2022. Those gifts included works by well-established American artists Achilles G. Rizzoli, Emery Blagdon, Mary T. Smith, J. B. Murray, and William L. Hawkins, among others.
A leading champion and advocate of artists active outside conventional art mainstreams, Ms. Heckler’s gifts to AFAM have significantly enriched the museum’s collection and representation of modern and contemporary self-taught artists who have been at the vanguard of rapid international attention in recent years, both from the art world and serious scholarly inquiry. The present group of works was
thoughtfully selected by Ms. Heckler, in dialogue with Valérie Rousseau, AFAM’s curatorial chair and senior curator of 20th-century and contemporary art, to reflect the scope of her esteemed collection and strengthen particular areas of the museum’s collection.
Among the many exceptional works included in this group is a monumental landscape by MartÍn RamÍrez (1895-1963) measuring 9 feet wide, which joins several other masterworks by the artist in the museum’s collection. This untitled collage, executed ca. 1950 while Ram Í rez was institutionalized at the DeWitt State Hospital in Auburn, Calif., where he resided from 1948 until his death, is composed of more than 100 recycled pieces of paper of varying colors, thicknesses, and sources, giving the work a depth and complexity that only accentuates the multi-layered realities and perspectives of his compositions. In this work, Ram Í rez’s landscape contains subjects that would have been familiar to him, such as train tracks, roads, cars, parking lots, food markets, farmland, kitchens, horses and carriages, and churches, in addition to fictional references such as statues of imaginary animals and persons, creatures, and flora. The intricately detailed iconography with which Ram Í rez populates the scene is emblematic of his unique visual vocabulary and language that defines his works. This
work, along with others included in this gift, are scheduled to be featured in a forthcoming collection-based exhibition at AFAM in spring 2026; further details to be announced in the future. “The creators in this collection were not in the art mainstream. Somewhere, someone discovered their work; they were found by chance.... The artists in my collection did it for themselves, for their own self-expression,” once stated Audrey B. Heckler.
Artworks from the Heckler collection were previously presented to critical and popular acclaim at AFAM in “Memory Palaces: Inside the Collection of Audrey B. Heckler” (2019-2020). The exhibition, comprised of works by over 80 artists, was drawn exclusively from Ms. Heckler’s collection and surveyed the international scope and diversity underlying her collection. The American Folk Art Museum also published “The Hidden Art: Twentieth and Twenty-First Century Self Taught Artists from the Audrey B. Heckler Collection” (2017), which features 32 essays by renowned scholars and art historians celebrating the individual contributions and legacies of the self-taught artists in the collection.
“We are forever indebted to Audrey for her conviction in the museum and shared belief in our mission of engaging the public through the promotion of self-taught art to critically give voice to and reclaim the stories of so many artists under-recognized in their lifetime because of the color of their skin, their education, or history of mental illness. With this latest gift, Audrey’s legacy is only further cemented as a leading
visionary who has helped solidify self-taught art as a significant art form in its own right. We are so grateful to Audrey’s sons, Jim and Andrew, for continuing her commitment to self-taught art and to AFAM,” mentioned Jason T. Busch, Becky and Bob Alexander Director & CEO.
A devoted AFAM trustee for more than 20 years beginning in 2003, Ms. Heckler enriched the museum for decades through loans for exhibitions, gifts to the collection, and financial contributions to a variety of initiatives, notably the formation of the Council for Self-Taught Art and Art Brut and the museum’s Visionary
Award, which launched more than 15 years ago and honors an individual or an organization that has made a distinctive contribution to selftaught art. In recognition of Ms. Heckler’s longtime commitment to AFAM, the museum recently renamed the Visionary Award the Audrey B. Heckler Visionary Award in 2024 in honor
of her longstanding commitment to the award as well as her legacy as a visionary leader and champion of artists. Additionally, one of the flagship galleries at the museum was renamed in Ms. Heckler’s honor, and she was celebrated at AFAM’s annual gala in 2019 for her longstanding and impactful

Antique Toy Dealer’s Collection To Be Sold In Two Sales
Morphy’s has won the right to auction the private collection of legendary antique toy and train dealer/ collector Tom Sage Sr., who passed away in November 2024. Under instruction from Tom Sage’s heirs, the 500- to 600-piece collection of rare and important European
and American toys will be offered in two parts, with the first session to be held Thursday, May 29, and part two to follow in late October. Both sales will take place at Morphy’s southeastern Pennsylvania gallery, with all forms of remote bidding available.
In addition to being an astute collector since 1967, Sage was also amongst the earliest entrepreneurs to develop a business around the buying and selling of antique toys. He was a ubiquitous presence at antique shows and auctions, both in the United States and Europe, and had a name that was synonymous with quality, trustworthiness and a superior knowledge of the categories in which he specialized.
