The Pennsylvania Show Will Be Held In Valley Forge On April 23 To 26 For America’s 250th
Historic Trappe is delighted to announce the launch of the Pennsylvania Antiques Show, a new event highlighting the best of Americana as well as folk art, garden antiques, French, Dutch, English, and Chinese decorative arts along with standout pieces of 20th-century art and design. The event will take place April 23 to 26, 2026, at the convention center at Valley Forge Casino Resort, just minutes from Valley Forge National Historical Park.
The show will begin with a special preview party on Thursday, April 23, from 5 to 9 p.m. It will then open to the public on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. All attendees will receive free admission to Historic Trappe’s museums, located just 20 minutes from the show, including the Center for Pennsylvania German Studies, in the Dewees Tavern; the Muhlenberg House, furnished to the Revolutionary War era; and the Speaker’s House, home of Frederick Muhlenberg, first Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, which will have its own grand opening to the public in spring of 2026 after 25 years of restoration.
The venue is easily accessible via major highways and offers free parking, an on-site hotel, and multiple restaurants, making it an ideal destination for collectors, dealers, and visitors alike. More than two dozen of the nation’s leading antiques dealers have already committed to the show, including Arader Galleries, A Bird in Hand, Barbara Israel Garden Antiques, David A. Schorsch-Eileen M.Smiles, H.L. Chalfant American Fine Art and Antiques, David M. Kurau-William R. & Teresa F. Kurau, Diana H. Bittel, Dixon-Hall Fine
Art, Earle D. Vandekar of Knightsbridge, Elliott and Grace Snyder, Greg K. Kramer, Hilary and Paulette Nolan, James M. Kilvington, James L. Price, Jayne Thompson Antiques, Jeff R. Bridgman, Jeffrey Tillou, Kelly Kinzle, Levy Galleries, Lillian Nassau, Nathan Liverant and Son, Olde Hope, Schwarz Gallery, Silver Art by D&R, and Antique French Fine Arts.
Patrick Bell and Edwin Hild of Olde Hope, who will be celebrating their 50th anniversary in the antiques business in 2026, noted that “this is exactly
what the field needs, a fresh burst of energy, with seasoned dealers and younger ones alike participating.” Skip Chalfant, a longtime exhibitor at the Delaware Antiques Show and Philadelphia Antiques Show, is also an enthusiastic supporter, saying “I am very excited about this new venue. The fact that you have some of the best dealers in the country as well as the 250th anniversary of our nation is a win-win situation!”
David Schorsch, who began as an antiques dealer at age 12 working with his mother, added, “I applaud
Historic Trappe’s efforts to attract younger dealers and collectors.”
Diana H. Bittel, a nationally recognized antiques dealer and veteran show manager, will help organize the event, bringing her expertise from the Delaware Antiques Show and The Newport Show.
Highlighting the next generation of dealers, collectors, and scholars, Historic Trappe is making a special effort to engage younger antiques dealers, collectors, designers, and scholars in the show. Zac Ziebarth,

Hake’s To Hold Auction On July 29 And 30
Sale To Feature Pop Culture Collectibles, From Original Comic Art, Comic Books And Action Figures To Sports, Political And Disney Rarities
Hake’s Tuesday and Wednesday, July 29 and 30, online-only auction offers collectors a top-notch mix of pop culture rarities crossing literally hundreds of categories. Highlighted by exceptional pieces from long-held collections of every imaginable type, the 1,562-lot selection, with its variety, makes it possible for everyone to discover and bid on something exciting and special. From original comic art and “GI
Joe” and “Star Wars” figures to early Disney toys, sports and political memorabilia, the all-inclusive pop culture mix covers all the bases. In the DC comics domain, the big three are Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, but to own a copy of “Action Comics #1” or “Detective Comics #27,” the books in which the Man of Steel and Caped Crusader first appeared, respectively, would be cost-prohibitive for most
people. That leaves one of the strongest superheroes of all time: Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman. While she first appeared in “All Star Comics #8” in 1941, she earned her own comic book title in summer of 1942. A CGC 3.0 Good/VG example of “Wonder Woman No. 1,” which retells the origin story of the Amazonian demigoddess and includes the first appearance of her main foe
and ink cover art from an early run of “2000 AD,” Issue 197, featuring Judge Dredd. The book was released by Fleetway Publications on Jan. 31, 1981, and its cover features an amazing image of Judge Dredd being blown from his Lawmaster motorcycle as an atomic bomb explodes. It is particularly desirable because not all issues of “2000 AD” depict the lead

A 1929 R316 Kashin Publications Babe Ruth (HOF) signed card, PSA 2 (MK) with PSA/DNA 7 autograph grade, card was signed in 1932, possibly at a game, while Ruth was still playing pro ball, holds an open estimate with required starting bid of $10,000, which has already been surpassed.
Ares, is a highlight of Hake’s sale. Written by William Moulton Marston with art by HG Peter. Its auction estimate is set at $20,000 to $35,000. Several outstanding pieces of original comic book art are likely to land in the top 10. First, there’s Brian Bolland’s signed original pen
character, nor were they all created by Bolland, the British artist most closely associated with Dredd. To many Americans, this issue would have been their first exposure to the futuristic law enforcer from Mega-City One. The estimate is $35,000 to $50,000.
More than a century after he first stepped onto a pro baseball diamond, the immortal Hall of Famer Babe Ruth is still widely regarded as the greatest baseball player who ever lived. In ESPN’s 2025 Hall of 100, the “Bambino” still holds the #1 spot, followed by such legends as Willie Mays and Ted Williams. In their July auction, Hake’s includes a collectible from Ruth’s storied career, a 1929 R316 Kashin Publications baseball card clearly autographed (in 1932) by the home run king himself. The card shows Ruth in his Yankees uniform ready to swing at a pitch. PSA-graded 2 (MK) with a PSA/DNA 7 autograph grade, it has an open estimate and has already surpassed its required starting bid of $10,000.
An important Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson 1864 “National Union Ticket” fabric broadside with 26-star American Flag and names of 26 electors representing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is one of only three examples known to Hake’s political experts. Provenance from Rex and Patti Stark collection, it is estimated at $10,000 to $20,000.
A rare 1930s (Japan) Mickey Mouse and Betty Boop “Time Is Gold” celluloid wind-up toy with elusive original cardboard box with illustrated label, depicting Mickey standing beside simulated clock, is the only known boxed example and will hold an estimate of $10,000 to $20,000.
Every Hake’s pop culture auction includes stellar political memorabilia. The July event is no exception. One of the rarest pieces in the entire sale is an Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson 1864 “National Union Ticket” fabric broadside with a 26-star American Flag and the names of 26 electors who represented the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that year. One of only three examples known to Hake’s political experts, this important broadside was formerly in the collection of legendary collectors Rex and Patti Stark. The estimate is $10,000 to $20,000. Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert
This Week: A Timely Thought
By Peter Seibert
One of my oldest friends and mentors was the late John Snyder of Lancaster, Pa. John, who has been gone a number of years, was one of those folks who you trusted with their guesses about antiques more than you trusted most people’s facts. He had that innate ability to look at the design, history, and provenance of an object and then to immediately contextualize it.
John was passionate about regional furniture, and we often talked about the differences between Reading and York or Harrisburg and Carlisle. For John, there was a visual catalog of those differences that clearly pointed out where things were made. Considering the paucity of signed works, I soon came to realize that John’s Rosetta Stone for documenting a regional variation was in clock cases. While it was never a total slam dunk that a clock case was made in the same town as the clockmaker who assembled it all, there was still a lot of good evidence there for establishing patterns. And those patterns were the big tell in figuring out where things were made.
When John passed, I believe he had well over 100 clocks in his collection. No, he did not run them all. In fact, I am not sure I ever heard one running when I visited his home. But the reality was that he thoroughly studied
every clock to understand its construction and thus to create the mental catalog that he had for where things were made. How closely did he study the clocks? Well, I recall him telling me that he crawled inside a particularly wide Lampeter clock and got stuck. All these years later and I still cannot understand how, but he was suitably shaken to not try that again for a while.
Today, the benefit of John’s scholarship can be seen in numerous county historical societies and museums (especially Rock Ford). All are worth a visit to see both the objects and also to appreciate John’s scholarship. For me, John’s process was as important as his discoveries. We talked about how many scholars will focus solely on either the artistic aspect or construction of a piece. Those are important techniques in analyzing an object. How does it relate to others of the same type?

Mantle “holy grail” baseball card finished at $59,000, in Miller & Miller Auctions online-only Pre-1980 Sports Cards & Memorabilia auction held June 22.
All prices in this report are in Canadian dollars and include an 18 percent buyer’s premium. The Barilko hockey stick was the undisputed sleeper item of the sale, easily blasting through its $5,000 high estimate on its way to top lot honors. In all, 235 lots came up for bid in an auction that grossed $386,952.
“The Bill Barilko stick was an absolute thrill to bring to market and see a Canadian icon’s name live on in the sale of a historic piece of memorabilia,” said Ben Pernfuss, consignment director for the sale, adding, “Card results remained strong, as two 1952 Mantles highlighted an exciting offering of pre-1980 cards. Sold was a range of cards, sports
Similarly, how is it built? Does it have extra pinning and wedged dovetails? Then it must have been made by a Germanic cabinetmaker. But, John also brought a deep and abiding knowledge of genealogy and history to the study as well. Learning who it was made for was just as important as the maker in many respects. I recall his pursuit of an affluent Mennonite named John Musser. Musser’s home must have been spectacular, and John Snyder devoted hours to understanding it. Why? First was his interest in decorative arts and architecture. Second was that John Musser’s possessions were among the finest made. What did that tell us about affluent Mennonites in the 18th century?
I tell interns repeatedly that rather than studying just one aspect of an object that they need to look at every part. Who made it? Why did they make it? Who was it made for? What was
the owner’s status and background? When you combine those answers, you get a much fuller and more robust picture of the history of any antique.
“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

The game-used, teamsigned Bill Barilko hockey stick from the Toronto Maple Leaf’s 1950-51 Stanley Cup season offered a significant piece of hockey history. The stick was made by the Love & Bennett sporting goods store, located on the same block as the Maple Leaf Garden. It was stamped with Barilko’s number 5 and signed by the members of that championship team.

especially those connected with a favorite toy. To many boys and girls of the 1980s, it would have been a dream come true to own a Transformers 1986 Series 3 Trypticon (Decepticon Dinosaur/ City/Battle Station) with its transforming mini-car FullTilt and tank named Brunt.
However, not many youngsters got their wish.
“It was a giant, expensive toy, so if some other kid in the neighborhood had one, that’s where everyone would congregate,” said Alex Winter, president of Hake’s Auctions.
“Few toys have had the staying power of Trypticon; it’s
hard to beat a dinosaur-robot combination. Hasbro is still producing Trypticons, and the nostalgia for the earliest versions is huge.” The set in the auction is an especially rare first-release version that only saw limited production and did not come with a poster, as later versions did. Graded AFA 80 Q-NM, it is one of only four examples of its type to be graded by AFA and the only one in its high grade. The auction marks the first time a set of its exact type will have appeared at auction. It’s estimate is $10,000 to $20,000.
From the golden era of toy production comes a rare 1930s (Japan) Mickey Mouse and
The Kenner 1978 “Star Wars” Early Bird Special Certificate Package store display, AFA 70 EX+, was designed to hold stiff illustrated cardboard envelopes, each containing a sealed kit available for a limited time to mail-order the first set of four action figures (Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbacca and R2-D2). Only example of its type ever to come to auction in any grade, it holds an open estimate.

An “Appearing Magic Kettle,” estimated at $3,000 to $5,000, appeared at a selling price of
$14,400. Made in Los Angeles, Calif., by John Gaughan in the early 2000s after a design of Carl Willmann, with this illusion, the performer produced a tea kettle from an empty foulard, then poured any drink called for from it. This was one of six examples manufactured by Gaughan. A foulard is a soft lightweight fabric such as a handkerchief.
Klosterman’s massive library of magic publications, lecture notes and thin magic booklets, spanning the 20th century, sold for $20,400.
Klosterman’s magicians’ tokens and wooden nickels collection was estimated at $2,500 to $3,500 and realized $10,200. This expansive collection of over 700 tokens and over 200 wooden nickels was housed alphabetically in four vinyl binders, with most tokens in cardstock coin holders with inked identifications. Klosterman’s collection of magicians’ cufflinks was estimated at $2,000 to $4,000 and scored

Betty Boop “Time Is Gold” celluloid wind-up toy, complete with its elusive original cardboard box with pictorial label. The toy’s design includes a smiling pie-eyed Mickey standing beside a simulated clock with movable hands. The only known example retaining its original box, it is one of the rarest of all Mickey and Betty toys. It carries a $10,000 to $20,000 estimate.

“As it turns out, the name Klosterman is synonymous not only with magic tricks, but magic at auction, as our fourth single-consignor sale from his legendary collection proved. Bidding was fierce and spirited through the nine-hour long auction, with the final results of over $600,000 landing some 20 percent above the high estimate,” summed up Gabe Fajuri, President at Potter & Potter Auctions.

owner of Ziebarth’s Antiques and current president of the Antiques Dealers’ Association of America, will be participating. At 23, Jeffrey Ricketts of East Nottingham Antiques will likely be the youngest dealer in the show. He is passionate about the antiques business and recently spoke at Colonial Williamsburg’s Antiques Forum on the restoration of his 18th-century log house in Cecil County, Md. Oliver Garland will be exhibiting a mix of 17th to 19th century decorative smalls, European antiques, curiosities, and portraits. Another young couple joining the show, Christopher and Bernadette Evans of Virginia, specialize in country Americana and folk art. Phil Mead, of Mead Americana, will offer Colonial and Revolutionary American militaria, books, paper, and personal objects. Mead holds a Ph.D. in early American history from Harvard and is the former chief historian and curator of the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia.
Many younger collectors also serve on Historic Trappe’s board and will be actively involved with the show’s planning. “We’re excited to leverage the energy and contacts of both our trustees and professional staff, many of whom are significantly younger than those at peer organizations,” said Lisa Minardi, executive director

New research by young professionals and emerging scholars will also be presented throughout the event. One featured speaker is Emily Sneff, a Trappearea native and leading historian of the Declaration of Independence, who recently earned her Ph.D. from William & Mary. She will speak about her forthcoming book, “When the Declaration of Independence Was News” (to be published by Oxford University Press) and host a book signing during the show. Another young scholar who will be speaking is Christopher Malone, curator at Historic Trappe, who will share new discoveries on Pennsylvania German redware from the forthcoming volume three of “Americana Insights,” an annual volume series focusing on traditional Americana and folk art.
