Profile In Pennsylvania German Studies
By Karl Pass
Gladys M. Lutz (1909-2007) of Schnecksville, Pa. (born in Lynnport, Pa.), was an elementary school teacher for 37 years prior to retiring in 1964. The start of her education career was in one-room schoolhouses. Lutz was a member of Jacobs Church in New Tripoli and began her painting career in 1968. Documenting Pennsylvania German everyday life and culture, primarily in the Lehigh Valley, she worked with a vibrant color palette on board in what is considered a naive untrained or self-taught folk tradition. Lutz provided a short description on the reverse of her paintings using her manual typewriter, providing a documented historical record of what the scene or activity depicted. Specializing in themed series, she often did paintings in groups of five, such as covered bridges of the region. One example in the 9-by-12inch oil-on-board covered bridge series depicts “Schlicher’s Bridge.” The typed index card on reverse reads: “Schlicher’s Bridge is located near the Trexler-Lehigh County Game Preserve. It is also known as the Deer Pen Bridge. It is the shortest (108 ft. long) and the ‘newest’ (built in 1882) bridge that spans the Jordan Creek. It is a one span structure, constructed with the Burr truss and is maintained by the state. It is one of five covered bridges that cross the Jordan Creek. The others are Guth’s Bridge, Wehr’s Bridge, Rex’s Bridge, and Geiger’s Bridge.” The other four are also depicted in the series.

“Folk Art Memories: The Folklife Illustrations of Gladys M. Lutz” was published in 2014 by the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University.
In 2005, the Albany Township Historical Society had a booth at the Kutztown Folk Festival recreating a Pennsylvania German summer kitchen and daily food ways of rural Pennsylvania Germans during the summer. Many farms used (some still do) summer kitchens during the heat of the summer months in order to keep extra heat out of the house. Summer kitchens are most often attached outbuildings with a hearth and bake oven. An outgrowth of the festival experience prompted society volunteers to create a cookbook using Lutz’s paintings to illustrate traditional activities in a seasonal format such as collecting dandelion greens in spring, harvesting berries and baking pies in summer, making apple butter in the fall, and smoking meats in winter. “Folk Art & Foodways of the Pennsylvania Dutch” by Jeff Dietrich and Lucetta Trexler Muth, the cookbook organized around the four seasons with seasonal illustrations by Lutz, was published in 2006. Filled with 115 recipes collected from local Pennsylvania German families, some are classic dishes, and other recipes are more contemporary, adapted to modern times.
Dietrich and Trexler Muth perfectly incorporate 13 of Lutz’s colorful paintings. With each illustration is a story written by the artist and skillfully arranged in the book by Gail Gottlund.
Another worthwhile examination of Lutz’s artwork was done by the Pennsylvania German Cultural

The 62nd Lititz Antiques Show Regional Show Among The Most Popular In Marketplace
By Karl Pass
“I thought Saturday was strong and great stuff sold,”
mentioned Cory Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation, the organization which runs
the Lititz Antiques Show as its annual fundraiser. In its 62nd year, the show is as relevant as ever in a fast changing marketplace. Held June 27 and 28 in Warwick Middle School in Lititz, Pa., there were 51 dealers. Primarily country, this show boasts a variety of quality material which appeals to a large audience of today’s buyers.
Attendance was steady both Friday and Saturday, with advance ticket sales growing year-over-year and the overall gate up 13 percent from last year.
A camera team from WGAL News (Lancaster) was there to showcase in their broadcast. Last year, WHTM News (Harrisburg) did a feature. Buyers came from Delaware, Maryland,

New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts. Dealer spaces sold out earlier than most years, indicating how the show is viewed within a changing show circuit. Many exhibitors, both full and part time, said they like the time of year this show is held, always the last weekend in June during a neighboring extravaganza in Adamstown and Kutztown. Some mentioned wanting to do a show with lower overhead costs that brought in comparable attendance if not stronger buyers than certain other shows. Many reported being pleased with the amount of business done.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics
Michael Jordan Scores A Slam Dunk At Auction

By Shawn Surmick
It should come as no surprise that sports memorabilia, and more importantly, sports trading cards, are one of the fastest growing markets in the entire antiques and collectibles trade. The demand for top tier artifacts is never ending, and record-breaking sales are quickly becoming the norm. That said, I have always advised caution in overheated collecting markets, and the world of sports trading cards is no different.
On June 26, a record-breaking sale caught the attention of many sports card enthusiasts, and as expected, the mass media hype machine went into overdrive. It was on that date that a 1986 Fleer basketball card featuring Michael Jordan sold for a record-breaking sum of $2.5 million. The card is considered to be his rookie card and was autographed by Michael Jordan from a secret card signing in Florida sometime last year. The card was also third party graded by PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) in 9 condition with an autograph confirmed to be original and graded in solid 10 condition. The $2.5 million

with original paint, split oak and rye straw baskets, stoneware, homespun linen, hand sewn quilts, fraktur, early maps, prints, pewter, gold leaf wooden store signs, Currier and Ives prints, gold and silver vintage jewelry, unusual costume jewelry, blown glass, 1700s and 1800s hardware,
price tag makes this the most expensive 1986 card in existence and, of course, one of the most valuable trading cards to come out of the 1980s.
As someone who has been in the antiques and collectibles trade since the age of 12, these headlines are never earth-shattering to me. In fact, when I hear about a sale like this I am more often fascinated by what occurred behind the scenes than the actual sale itself. It should come as no surprise to regular readers that I am a bit of a curiosity seeker, and I often have to remind myself (almost on a daily basis) that curiosity killed the cat. This sale however, itched a part of my brain that I just had to scratch. I had a mentor in the trade who once told me to always look beyond the headlines. “The devil is in the details,” he would always say to me. With that being said, I am by no way stating that this record-breaking sale is invalid. In fact, I believe it is more than valid, but there are some facts that need to be explored so that any potential collector or enthusiast can properly assess the importance of this record-breaking sale.
First, this item was auctioned off by Joopiter, which is not one of the first auction houses that come to mind when most collectors think of auction companies that deal in high-end sports cards. Joopiter is becoming a major player in the trade (pun intended), but that is mainly due to who owns Joopiter. Joopiter was started by Grammy-winning American musician Pharrell Williams. He is an artist and also has a passion for collectibles, so he decided to create
and so much more. Enjoy shopping in an 1840s brick Dry Goods store (with air conditioning!) on two floors with wide plank floors, tin ceilings, stenciling and beamed ceilings. Plus there are three other antique shops a few doors away, all in the 12-block National Register District. To learn more, call 610-390-0403.

Joopiter. Obviously due to Pharrell’s success in music he had the means to properly promote Joopiter, and this record-breaking sale ensures that Joopiter will, at least for now, be a household name among sports card collectors.
The “devil” in this case, however, is not who owns Joopiter or its relevance. The starting bid for this coveted card was $2 million, and Joopiter charges a 25 percent buyer’s premium, meaning this sale only needed one bid to sell at the $2.5 million price, and it got it. I would assume that when most people hear of a record-breaking sale in any collectible market, especially for an item that sold at auction, they envision several high-profile bidders battling it out at auction to the bitter end. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen here as there was only one single lone bid that claimed this item.
Another detail that should be pointed out is the fact that this card was originally listed for sale at Sotheby’s, before being removed at the request of the original consigner. With no disrespect to Joopiter or Pharrell Williams, I am confident that if you ask anyone who is not involved directly in the antiques and collectibles trade to name a well-known auction house, Sotheby’s would be mentioned more often than Joopiter. Now to be fair, Sotheby’s isn’t always the best choice to auction off an item like this, but I question why the consigner decided to pull the item from Sotheby’s and go with Joopiter instead? This is the part of my brain that is itching like crazy right now, and unfortunately, I feel this right here says all you need to know about the details of this sale.
Make no mistake, however; this does not mean the sale is less than stellar or invalid. I want to make that very clear. The antiques and collectibles trade is a perfect example of an unregulated market, and within that market, most sales are not overly transparent. Ask any high-end collector who regularly bids at auction if they want their name to be publicly released along with the price they paid for any item, and I can assure you that most high-end collectors would surely say no. Privacy is of the utmost importance in the trade, and most high-end auction houses go to great lengths to protect their most prominent buyers. This does not mean that collectors and the overall mass media who reports on these sales should not dissect transactions like this and be able to point out any details that cast some doubts on the record-breaking sale in question. The antiques and collectibles trade is a hype-filled business. Auction companies, grading companies, and high-profile investors operating in these markets have used marketing hype to their advantage for years. It is best we learn from this and question everything. This sale, while valid, deserves scrutiny, and so does every other sale in the trade that attracts media attention. Just some food for thought.

creative process while offering insights into his artistic methods across five decades.
While Renoir’s paintings have become icons of Impressionism, his drawings are less well-known. Yet beginning in his earliest days as an artist-in-training and continuing until his very last years, Renoir regularly drew and painted on paper
in a variety of media. The first comprehensive exhibition devoted to his drawings since “Aquarelles, pastels et dessins par Renoir” in 1921 at the Galeries Durand-Ruel, in Paris, “Renoir Drawings” assembles outstanding examples of all the media on paper in which Renoir worked, from pencil, pen and ink, chalk, pastel, and watercolor to etching and lithography.

farm life and countryside scenes as seen and imagined through the artist’s eyes. On par with other artists such as Verna Seagreaves, Luke Gottshall, and Hattie Brunner, it is Gladys Lutz who served dual roles of being a historian and artist, not only skillfully rendering quality work but taking the time to document the associated history of the work.
The Gladys Lutz estate donated a collection of her paintings to PGCHC at Kutztown University. Unless noted, all images are courtesy of Jeff Dietrich.
Four seasonal paintings by Lutz, titled “Planting the Garden,” “Picking Sour Cherries,” “Harvesting Wheat,” and “Cutting Wood,” sold for $230 at the first Richard and Rosemarie Machmer auction held through Sotheby’s in Kutztown in 1997.

Old Toy Soldier Auctions Will March Forward As Part Of Morphy’s
With the recent passing of Ray Haradin, the founder of Old Toy Soldier Auctions (OTSA), the antique toy hobby lost one of its most vigorous and respected advocates. However, because of Haradin’s foresight and benevolence toward his clients and fellow collectors, the globally-recognized OTSA brand will not be dissolved. In honoring Ray’s specific wishes, his auction business will instead “soldier on” under the care
of Morphy Auctions and its founder/president, Dan Morphy. Going forward, Morphy’s will accommodate OTSA’s consignors and preserve the brand with a new, permanent section for toy soldiers and figures in its Toys and General Collectibles sales. The first selection of consignments from OTSA clients will be included in a Nov. 12 to 14 auction live at Morphy’s

New Frontier To Auction Old West, Cowboy And Native American Artifacts
Sale Will Be During Cheyenne Western Collectibles And Firearms Show
Many a Wild West tale originated in, or had a connection to, historic Cheyenne, Wyo., a railroad and cavalry town founded in the Dakota Territory in 1867 and nicknamed the “Magic City of the Plains.” Steeped in cowboy, outlaw and Native American lore, Cheyenne is the picturesque site of New Frontier’s annual Western Collectibles and Firearms Show and Auction, where 19th-century American legends come to life through artifacts, memorabilia and firearms of estate

In this year’s auction, New Frontier will present 383 lots, many fresh to the

equine tack is a Deerlodge Montana State Prison-made bridle that may be the only surviving example of its type made to fit a pony. It displays a seldom-seen combination of nine colors hitched in intricate geometric patterns and adorned by 10 tassels and glass rosettes. It has its original chin strap, iron bit and split reins, and it is in near-mint condition mounted on a professionallymade display stand.
One of the many treasures in the featured Native American collection is a rare, oversize Lakota double-sided figural-beaded tobacco bag.
The beadwork image shows a mounted Native warrior with a full trailer warbonnet against an uncommon periwinkle blue sinew-sewn background on brain-tanned hide. The 39-inch-long bag is also extensively beaded on its neck and mouth, and is accented by a dazzling quilled panel with turquoise and orange arrow patterns and long hide fringe.
More than five dozen pairs of decorative early spurs by premier makers are included in the sale. In terms of rarity, it would be hard to beat the pair of Qualey Bros single-mounted spurs with a full overlaid shield pattern, detailed rowels and characteristic double buttons. Also notable for their beautiful artistry, a pair of single-mounted GS Garcia spurs boast an eye-catching heart pattern on artistically-scalloped heelbands. They are further embellished by unusually long candy-striped shanks and feathered detail work on the rowels.

The new alliance between OTSA and Morphy’s has the blessing of Ray’s wife of 33 years, Nancy Haradin, who explained, “Ray left a letter with instructions to reach out to Dan. That way, he knew the business would carry on and that it would be done to his standards.”
“It’s an honor and a privilege for Morphy’s to be entrusted with perpetuating Ray’s legacy and his generous, highly-principled way of doing business. He was the backbone of the toy soldier market, and his auction company meant a great deal to him. For me, there’s also a personal connection that I take very seriously. Ray and I both grew up in Pittsburgh, and our families have known each other for 53 years. Ray was years ahead of me as a collector, and if it hadn’t been for his influence, I might not be in the business I’m in today,” commented Dan Morphy.
While OTSA will continue to be family-owned, its consignors’ goods will receive
OTSA is currently in the process of contacting the 42 consignors who had committed toy soldiers and figures to their next sale prior to Ray Haradin’s passing.
Those consignors will be given the option of having their pieces placed in Morphy’s November auction. Also, at the Sunday, Sept. 28, Chicagoland Toy Soldier Show, Morphy’s team members will be accepting toy consignments of all types for inclusion in the November event. The Chicagoland Toy Soldier Show will be held at the Schaumburg Marriott in Schaumburg (suburban Chicago), Ill.
