Kempton Antiques Show Set For Oct. 18

Antique Dealers Association Of Berks County Runs Popular One-Day Show

It’s not too early to mark calendars for this good autumn show. The 11th annual Kempton Antiques Show will be held Saturday, Oct. 18.This quality show is presented by the Antique Dealers Association of Berks County (ADABC) and takes place at the Kempton Community Center, located at 83 Community Center Drive in Kempton, Pa. Kempton is a rural northern Berks County town roughly between Allentown and Hamburg, north of Route 78. The location is ideal for collectors and dealers in the Lehigh Valley, as well as northern New Jersey.

The well-lit and newly renovated community center is a great venue for a show, and 45 dealers will showcase a full variety

of merchandise such as Pennsylvania country furniture; textiles including quilts, hooked rugs, coverlets, and samplers; pottery such as redware, stoneware, and Staffordshire china; vintage toys of tin, wood, and celluloid; metalware such as pewter, wrought and cast-iron, and tin; and other items, such as folk carvings, baskets, illustration art, Native American rugs and jewelry, Asian arts, estate jewelry, art glass, old books and historical documents, and much more. The range of items is extensive, and this is a dealer-friendly show known for having high-quality material. It ranks as the best one-day show in Pennsylvania, with items priced to sell. Great discoveries are found every year.

A Legacy In Stitches: The Ellen Rosenbach Collection

Dana Auctions Will Sell Contemporary Quilt Collection On Sept. 27

Dana Auctions LLC of Princeton, N.J., is honored to present “A Legacy in Stitches: The Ellen Rosenbach Collection,” a high quality offering of more than 170 quilts created by master quilt artist Ellen Schargel Rosenbach over the span of four decades. The simulcast auction will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, in Princeton, N.J., and online at www.DanaAuctions.com, with all lots opening at $10, selling without reserve, and shipping available worldwide.

Rosenbach, a nationally recognized quilt artist and inventor of Applipop®, a patented tool that revolutionized turned-edge appliqué circles, has earned a devoted following for her distinctive designs, her dedication to quilt history, and her generosity in sharing her process with the quilting community. Her body of work pays homage to the grandeur of historical quilts, particularly 19th-century medallion quilts, while infusing them with her own signature style. Circles and dots, meticulously appliquéd with her trademark precision, appear as a recurring motif. While some early works feature hand appliqué, the majority were created on her home sewing machine, yet the workmanship is so refined that many are

Fueled by demand for vintage toys, superhero prototypes, and early Apple technology, the LCG Auctions Summer Premier Auction closed Aug. 24 with a record-breaking $850,202 in total sales. With 154-lots sold, the Louisiana-based auction house is known for vintage toys and pop-culture collectibles.

Leading the way was the “Masters of the Universe” Castle Grayskull playset (AFA 90), which cost $24.99 when it retailed in

1983, selling for $209,410, setting the all-time record for any production toy across all franchises. Another record-setting highlight was a 1978 Kenner Luke Skywalker with Telescoping Lightsaber (AFA 90), which realized $161,458, a new record for any production action figure. Known as the finest Luke Skywalker figure in existence, the piece originally retailed for $1.86 when Kenner introduced “Star Wars” figures in 1978.

Also making headlines was the 1982 Kenner Superman “Pitch Piece” Prototype, which sold for $97,691, setting the record for any superhero action figure ever sold. This historic piece was originally used in Kenner’s presentation to DC Comics as they pursued the rights to produce superhero figurines.

Beyond toys and action figures, LCG Auctions is also known for specializing in the category referred to as vintage technology,

Illustration Art Record Established

Frank Frazetta’s Defining Image Of Conan Brings $13.5 Million

Frank Frazetta’s original cover painting for the 1967 Lancer/Ace Conan paperback, a landmark of modern fantasy art commonly known as “Man Ape” (1966), sold for a record-shattering $13.5

million including the buyer’s premium on Sept. 12 at Heritage Auctions. This new world record for an original Frazetta painting follows the parade of Frazetta records set by the auction house in recent years

and illuminates the ever-increasing desirability of the American artist’s works. This is currently the highest auction result for any Frazetta work and any comic or fantasy artwork globally.

“This is one of the most important paintings in the history of fantasy art ever to come to auction,” according to Todd Hignite, Heritage’s executive vice president. “Frazetta didn’t just illustrate Conan, he transformed him into an icon. This result is a testament to the power and permanence of his vision and to the unmatched reverence collectors have for his work.”

The painting, consigned by the Frazetta family, sold in a one-lot auction, part of a three-day Comic Art summer event that ended on Sept. 14. Scores of bids online preceded the live event, and the live bidding in the auction room was brief, fast and furious.

The painting’s image crystallized a literary hero and reset the expectations of popular illustration art. Completed in 1966 and published the following year, the oilon-canvas endures as one of the most recognizable of Frazetta’s Conan works and among the greatest images the artist ever produced.

generated and see the entire process as a celebration of the Frazetta legacy. We’re so grateful to Heritage for collaborating with us over many years as expert co-custodians of that legacy; their commitment has helped us realize record result after record result, and our relationship has played a huge role in continuing to expose new generations of fans to Frank’s fantastic artwork, which is the goal of everything we do. So, our sincere thanks to Heritage and congratulations to the winning bidder of this masterpiece!”

A favorite of Frazetta, “Man Ape” had until now remained with the artist and his family since its creation, preserving an unbroken link to Frazetta’s studio. Holly Frazetta, Frank Frazetta’s daughter and the co-founder of www.frazettagirls.com, stated, “Our family is beyond thrilled with this incredible result, and the most gratifying aspect is knowing without a doubt how proud my dad would have been. He often talked about how much breaking records meant to him, but I don’t think he could have imagined this record! My daughter Sara and I are blown away by the enthusiasm Conan has

“This painting by Frank Frazetta is one of the most recognizable and iconic images of Conan the Cimmerian,” said Robert E. Howard historian Mark Finn. Drawn from Howard’s tale “Rogues in the House,” the scene stages Conan’s brutal encounter with the man-ape Thak. Frazetta distilled the story into an unforgettable tableau: a barbarian warrior squared against a hulking beast, each figure modeled with authority and electrified by movement.

When “Man Ape” appeared on the cover of the 1967 Conan paperback reissues, it did more than sell books; it reinvented a character for a new era. “Frazetta’s covers for the Lancer/Ace series introduced a new theatricality into paperback illustration,” said Hignite. “They made Howard’s prose feel palpable to a new generation of readers, and for a huge number, these images became the stories.”

Collector Anecdotes And Antics

Record Breaking Sales Dominate The Trade, But...

It is becoming quite clear that there is a massive

connect in activity between the high end of the antiques and collectibles trade and the lower end. This is nothing new. The top 5 percent of many collecting categories tend to react differently to leading economic indicators like inflation, unemployment, and interest rates. This is simply because the collectors buying these items at this level are immune from most economic volatility due to being, in most cases, extremely affluent. I have often argued that it is a major miscalculation to analyze the top sales in the trade and assume how the entire antiques and collectibles trade is doing based on these results. Case in point, the ultra-high-end market for extremely sought-after vintage comic books is still booming at present time. Titles that sell for six to seven figures are still selling for these amounts. Unfortunately, however, other vintage comics books that routinely sell for thousands of dollars at present time are almost flat across the board. Make no mistake, these books are still selling, but they are not hitting record-breaking price levels like they were just a few short years ago. In an upcoming article I plan to discuss the changing demographics of the vintage comic book market and how collectors can best prepare. While vintage comic books are definitely not a dying collecting market as of yet, younger collectors are not as interested in this market as GenXers and Baby Boomers are. The demographics are slowly changing away from vintage comic books and moving

towards up-and-coming collectibles like “Pokemon” and vintage video games. “Pokemon” is extremely popular with millennial age collectors and younger generations across the board.

However, sports cards, collectible card games, and factory sealed toys from the late 1970s and 80s are another story entirely. LCG Auctions just sold a “Masters of the Universe” Castle Grayskull factory sealed playset graded by AFA (Action Figure Authority) in 90 condition for $209,410. And in that same auction they also sold a 1978 Kenner “Star Wars” Luke Skywalker 12-back double telescoping action figure in factory sealed condition, also graded by AFA in 90 condition, for a record sum. I hope you are sitting down because this action figure sold for $161,458! The prices I am quoted include the 20 percent buyer’s premium that LCG Auctions charges.

Heritage Auctions is also not immune from record-breaking sales either, and they just sold the most expensive sports card ever on Aug. 23, and it went for $12,932,000, eclipsing the previous record-breaking sale that was set back in August 2022 for the infamous 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card that sold for $12.6 million. The new record holder is a 2007 Upper Deck Dual Logoman card graded by PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) in 6 condition. The card was signed by both NBA greats, Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan. Kobe Bryant is sadly no longer with us, which adds to the overall appeal of this card. The buyer made an appearance on CNBC and was revealed to be none other than Kevin O’Leary of “Shark Tank” fame. O’Leary stated he bought the card with a group of two other high-profile collectors as an investment. Sales like this are quite common across the upper echelon of the collectibles trade.

On the lower end side of the trade, modern era mass produced “Pokemon” cards are nearly impossible to get at retail stores like Walmart, Target, and Game Stop. Resellers are swarming

major retailers and finding out when restocks are being made and fighting to get their hands on any new product releases. This is having a disastrous effect on the market as parents are complaining that they have to pay extraordinary markups to get the cards on sites like eBay to keep their children happy. Unfortunately, “Pokemon” has become the new go to mass-produced collectible that is being hoarded. And while the market has a lot of organic collectability since “Pokemon” has been in existence for almost 30 years with vintage cards selling for incredible sums on the secondary market, you still wouldn’t be wrong for comparing this frenzy to what took place during the mid1990s when “Beanie Babies” were the hottest (cough) guaranteed investment. Only now, since “Pokemon” has survived this long, collectors and speculators are arguing these cards will only continue to go up in value. How long will this current trend last? Your guess is as good as mine, but I wouldn’t be refinancing the house to buy modern era “Pokemon” cards, regardless as to what any one on social media tells you.

Other collecting categories that are making waves right now are higher end graded U.S. coins and currency. Whenever gold and silver prices increase like they are now, interest in higher end coins and currency also sees increased demand. And given that this is one of the most liquid markets in the entire antiques and collectibles trade, I don’t see this market slowing down any time soon.

In conclusion, I often recommend that collectors and investors operating in these markets look beyond the headlines. Every time a major sale occurs in the trade, the mainstream news media goes into overdrive to report on it. I am very cautious of a lot of collectible markets right now, and one should be asking why Kevin O’Leary, also known as Mr. Wonderful, immediately wanted everyone to know that he was one of the buyers of the now infamous most expensive sports card ever

sold. It is very easy to create artificial demand and hype in an unregulated market such as this. Add in the added layer of emotional attachment, and sadly it is easy to see that prices can go even higher over the short term. That said, what buyers should be asking is what are these high-end collectibles going to do over the long term? That unfortunately, is an article for another day. Until next time, remain level-headed and always remember that something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it at the exact time of sale. Enough said.

Collaboration Offers Innovative Way To Teach Visual Material

Barnes Foundation Partners With Penn Museum For Online Learning Platform

The Barnes Foundation has announced the expanded use of its innovative online learning technology, the Visual Experience Platform (VXP), through a new partnership with the Penn Museum. Beginning in fall 2025, the Penn Museum will host its popular “Deep Dig” classes and virtual lecture series, “Archaeology in Action,” on the VXP.

The VXP is a first-of-its-kind online learning platform developed by the Barnes specifically for the teaching of visual material. Intended for adult learners and K-12 students alike, the VXP

breaks from the static screenshare model, allowing students to interact with the digital image by zooming in on works of art, investigating details that are often not visible in person. With the VXP’s deep zoom technology, the work of art is no longer a static image on a slide; it is a dynamic field waiting to be investigated. The “explore” feature allows students to interact with the work of art independently, moving around the digital image, zooming in on details, and focusing on whatever sparks their interest.

Offering 360-degree views of galleries, synchronous and asynchronous delivery modes, and a searchable library of completed classes, the VXP affords students and teachers greater flexibility and more control over their learning experience.

The Barnes first began hosting its popular online classes on the platform in January 2023.

Between January 2023 and June 2025, the Barnes enrolled nearly 4,600 students in over 110 online classes hosted on the VXP, with 14 percent of students receiving scholarships. According to post-course surveys, 76 percent of students reported that the class was highly or extremely impactful on “the ways they look at art,” and 91 percent of students reported that the class “inspired them to continue their learning.”

In addition to the Barnes’ own classes, the VXP is designed to host other cultural and educational institutions’ courses, lectures, and asynchronous content. The Penn Museum will be the first to license this innovative technology, with its classes and lecture series launching in October and November, respectively. Through the partnership, Barnes members will receive $50 off tuition for the Penn Museum’s “Deep Dig” classes, while Penn Museum members will enjoy the same discount for the Barnes’ online classes. “The Barnes has been teaching about art for more than 100 years, and when we shifted our classes online in 2020 in response to the pandemic, we realized that if we were truly going to deliver a meaningful educational experience about

nearly indistinguishable from handwork.

“I don’t usually encourage quilters to part with their own quilts at auction,” noted Dana Balsamo, AQS-certified

quilt appraiser and auctioneer of Dana Auctions. “It can be a deeply emotional process, and the results are not always satisfying. But Ellen’s work captivated me immediately. She reproduces some of the most challenging quilts seen in museums and publications, then adds her own

voice as an artist. Her craftsmanship is simply extraordinary.”

For Rosenbach, letting go of her collection is about more than downsizing. “My hope is to share my love of quilting and quilt history, to bring joy to others, and to encourage learning through my work,” she explained. “Each quilt

is part of my story, but I want them to continue their journey in the hands of others.”

Rosenbach’s quilts have been praised by leading figures in the quilt world, including Brenda Papadakis, Froncie Quinn, and Annette Gero. She has also inspired countless quilters through her published patterns, online community, and videos documenting her quilts from first stitch to finished quilt.

art, or indeed any visual media, we needed a platform designed specifically for its study,” says Thom Collins, Neubauer Family executive director and president of the Barnes. “The VXP is the first platform to offer a truly interactive experience in the online study of art and visual media. It doesn’t attempt to replace the in-person experience; rather, it enhances that experience, using technology to explore art and visual media in a way that simply cannot be done in person. We are delighted to expand the VXP’s use through this new partnership with our colleagues at the Penn Museum, which will allow more students to learn online using our immersive platform.”

“The Penn Museum is thrilled to partner with another renowned cultural and educational institution like the Barnes to offer our ‘Deep Dig’ classes and ‘Archaeology in Action’ lectures on their innovative VXP platform,” says Christopher Woods, Williams director of the Penn Museum.

“Optimizing the online learning experience for our audiences strengthens our mission to amplify stories of our shared humanity and make archaeology and anthropology accessible to all.”

The VXP was inspired, in large part, by the progressive-era philosopher John Dewey, who played an

important role in the development of the Barnes Foundation during the 1920s. “Dewey argued that the most meaningful learning happens when students participate actively in the process,” says Martha Lucy, deputy director for research, interpretation, and education at the Barnes. “He and Dr. Albert Barnes both believed that a work of art is something to be experienced and discovered by the individual learner, not something that you just passively receive information about. This is why the VXP is so exciting: it allows users to explore the work of art independently and get right up close to its surface, to do the kind of close looking and critical thinking that was so important to Dr. Barnes.”

The Barnes uses the VXP for its live and on-demand online classes for adults and K-12 students and many educational programs for Barnes members and the public. In January, the Barnes launched its first on-demand classes for adults.

Recorded on the VXP, each class, which consists of about five 10-minute-long videos, allows students to pan the surface of the artwork and interact with the digital image in a way that is not possible when viewing a typical video. The Barnes also recently launched a suite of new interactive, multilingual educational videos for students in grades two through 10.

a topic and a curriculum content area to the collection. Free to access, these videos are used to support in-class lessons or at-home learning, with topics including pigments and process (grades five to eight), illustrations (grades two to four), and Spanish and French language learning (grades seven to 10), all with corresponding worksheets. Additionally, the Barnes released an art integration lesson for teachers who want to learn how to use artworks to support learning in the classroom for other curriculum areas.

Our goals with online learning have always been to expand our educational service, to grow new and diverse audiences, and to build new streams of sustainable revenue,” adds Will Cary, chief operating officer of the Barnes. “There is nothing else quite like the VXP on the market, a platform designed specifically for the teaching of visual material, and we are thrilled to begin licensing this pioneering software so other organizations can achieve these goals as well during this critical moment for the field.”

The Visual Experience Platform (VXP) is an initiative of the Barnes Foundation’s Knight Center for Digital Innovation in Audience Engagement and is made possible by generous support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Wind Innovation Fund.

“Frazetta’s work continues to set the benchmark for comic and fantasy art at auction,” summed up Hignite. “We’re proud to be the auction house trusted with his legacy, and with each new record, we see more clearly just how influential and enduring his imagery truly is.”
