Suspended Horizon is a project that addresses the cultural vibrancy of the neighborhood between Chinatown and Olvera Street. The site’s abundant natural sunlight shapes both the building’s form and spatial experience. Glass brings light into public spaces, creating openness, while wood adds warmth and intimacy to private areas. These materials work together to guide and transform light, much like a gallery, revealing layers of meaning within the space.
The building features two complementary forms - one opaque and private, the other translucent and public - that interacts to create a seamless transition between introspection and engagement. A cantilevered section extends outwards, forming a shaded threshold for gathering and reflection, where light filters through translucent edges to cast dynamic patterns.
Design to evoke tranquility, the project harmonizes light, materiality, and form, offering both a retreat from the fast pace of Los Angeles and an invitation to connect deeply with the environment.

Vertical Village challenges us to reimagine and reshape neglected urban spaces, such as street medians and parcels of land deemed unusable for conventional purposes. Through this course, we designed Vertical Village to see beyond the surface of these areas, unlocking their latent potential and breathing new life into them with inspired architectural designs. This transformative process empowers us to bring value to discarded sites, turning them into beacons of creativity, resilience, and community vitality.
To achieve this, Vertical Village speculates and pushes the boundaries of conventional thinking by incorporating forward-looking elements. Vertical Village not only responded to current trends but also created building programs that include visionary landscapes and account for emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and evolving data software.

For Vertical Village , my partner, Allison Yen, and I spent the first half of the semester exploring various artificial intelligence tools to inform our design process . We began by using Midjourney to generate conceptual designs , referencing architects and specific programs to shape our initial iterations. As we progressed, we refined our prompts—blending successful generations and leveraging Midjourney’s evolving memory to develop a concept that resonated with us. We also highlighted specific regions within the images to direct Midjourney’s focus more effectively.
To further enhance our visualization, we incorporated reference images to establish the right contextual background and utilized additional AI tools such as LookX AI and Veras . Alongside this, we employed ArcGIS for data mapping , analyzing demographics and education levels surrounding our Venice Blvd site. This research led us to develop two distinct design concepts , which we later synthesized into a cohesive 3D form
Grounding our project in physical materiality , we visited fabric stores and conducted site studies to inform the tactile and spatial qualities of our model. The result was a playful and stimulating preschool designed to extend the Venice Library’s educational reach to young children . The form of the building draws inspiration from the adjacent residential housing, fostering a sense of familiarity while introducing an engaging and dynamic learning environment

Studying architecture abroad in Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Cambodia provided a unique opportunity to explore diverse architectural styles while collaborating with students from different cultural backgrounds. This experience deepened my global perspective and understanding of how design responds to regional contexts.
In Japan, my partner and I studied the traditional teahouse (Chashitsu), analyzing its minimalist aesthetic and seamless integration with nature. In collaboration with students from Hong Kong University, we explored the city’s dense urban fabric, focusing on vertical urbanism, sustainability, and adaptive reuse through the study of historic Shophouses (Tong Lau). In Vietnam, working with students from the University of Architecture, Ho Chi Minh, we examined the resilience of vernacular architecture, particularly the Vietnam KTT (Khu Tap The), and its resourceful approach to communal living.
This cross-cultural experience enriched my ability to compare architectural strategies across regions, reinforcing the impact of history, climate, and societal needs on the built environment while strengthening my adaptability and collaboration skills.

KONNICHIAN TEAHOUSE | ANALYTICAL DRAWING MY PARTNER, ALLISON YEN, AND I DOCUMENTED THE KONNICHIAN TEAHOUSE (CHASHITUS) IN KYOTO, JAPAN, IMMERSING OURSELVES IN ANALYTICAL DRAWINGS TO UNCOVER THE INTRICATE ELEMENTS OF TRADITIONAL JAPANESE TEAHOUSE DESIGN. THROUGH DETAILED STUDY, WE EXPLORED ITS SPATIAL COMPOSITION, MATERIALITY, AND THE SEAMLESS INTEGRATION OF ARCHITECTURE WITH BORROWED SCENERY, EMPHASIZING THE DELICATE BALANCE BETWEEN BUILT AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS.

NOS 1.3 PLAYING FIELD ROAD | ANALYTICAL DRAWING MY PARTNER, ALLISON YEN, AND I COLLABORATED WITH STUDENTS FROM HONG KONG UNIVERSITY TO EXPLORE AND STUDY HONG KONG’S SHOPHOUSE (TONG LAU), AN ARCHITECTURAL GEM THAT EMBODIES THE CITY’S HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL LEGACY. SITUATED IN MONG KOK, KOWLOON, THIS TONG LAU SEAMLESSLY BLENDS WESTERN AND CHINESE INFLUENCES IN ITS EXTERIOR, FEATURING INTRICATE CARVINGS, ORNATE BALCONIES, AND TRADITIONAL WOODEN SHUTTERS. THIS STUDY FOCUSES ON ANALYZING THE FAÇADE SYSTEM AND SPATIAL ORGANIZATION OF TONG LAU, DEEPENING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF ITS ARCHITECTURAL AND CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE.

CHUNG CHU 26 LY TU TRONG | ANALYTICAL DRAWING MY TEAM—CAYETANA MONCAYO, JUSTIN KACZENDER, AND I—PARTNERED WITH STUDENTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ARCHITECTURE, HO CHI MINH CITY TO CONDUCT AN IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS OF VIETNAM’S KTT (KHU TAP THE). THROUGH ON-SITE VISITS, INTERVIEWS, AND CONSULTATIONS, WE UNCOVERED THE UNTOLD STORIES BEHIND THESE ARCHITECTURAL WONDERS.COLLABORATING WITH VIETNAMESE STUDENTS PROVIDED INVALUABLE INSIGHTS, ENRICHING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF CULTURAL NUANCES AND LOCAL PERSPECTIVES. THIS TEAMWORK NOT ONLY ALLOWED US TO EXPLORE THE PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES OF THE KTT BUT ALSO REVEALED THEIR HIDDEN MEANINGS, HIGHLIGHTING THE SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND COMMUNITY.

Couture Courtyard, located in the vibrant heart of Downtown Los Angeles’ Fashion District, stands on the historic site of Hamburger and Sons’ / May Co. Department Store. This community center is dedicated to nurturing and educating the next generation of fashion designers.
The facade takes inspiration from the intricate textures of finely woven fabric, creating a visually captivating exterior. The double-layered surface mimics the complexity of textile patterns, offering a dynamic and fluid aesthetic. As light interacts with the facade, it replicates the way sunlight dances on different threads, evoking a sense of movement and depth.
Upon entering, visitors are welcomed into a spacious atrium, designed as a hub for creativity and collaboration. The open-concept layout encourages the free exchange of ideas among students, educators, and industry professionals. A continuous “Red Carpet” walkway connects the two main structures, reinforcing the unity and flow of the design. This seamless connection enhances both the functionality and elegance of Couture Courtyard, making it a vibrant space for learning and innovation.

Harvest Housing embodies a vision of fostering a healthier lifestyle within the community through the integration of thoughtfully designed gardens. The building’s architecture blends seamlessly with the surrounding neighborhood, featuring interconnected volumes that open onto vibrant green spaces, including ground-floor gardens and rooftop terraces.
In response to the pressing issue of food insecurity in inner-city Los Angeles, these gardens provide a sustainable source of fresh produce. They include fruit trees, vegetable beds, and herb gardens, complemented by a ground-floor food market offering affordable, convenient access to nutritious options for the community. Beyond their practical benefits, the gardens serve as recreational and educational hubs, encouraging community participation through gardening workshops and wellness programs.
Harvest Housing emphasizes social interaction and seeks to counteract the prevalence of fast food in the area, inspiring a cultural shift toward healthier eating habits. This architectural initiative adopts a holistic approach to well-being, seamlessly blending sustainability, education, and community engagement to create lasting positive change.
