Annapolis Symphony Orchestra Season 64 Concerts

Page 1

WELCOME TO SEASON 64!

Each season, I ask myself: “What stories do we most need to hear right now?”

This year’s journey with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra takes us across borders and generations—through music as rich in history as it is alive with possibility.

I’ve chosen works that honor the traditions we cherish while amplifying the voices we need to hear today. We’ll dive into the vibrant pulse of modern Mexico with Gabriela Ortiz’s  Antrópolis and rediscover the long-overlooked brilliance of William Dawson’s powerful  Negro Folk Symphony. We’ll revisit Rachmaninoff’s sweeping Second Piano Concerto with the phenomenal Olga Kern, and celebrate the flair of French modernism as Pascal Rogé brings Ravel’s jazz-infused concerto to life.

We’ll also welcome Pablo Sáinz-Villegas, performing Arturo Márquez’s brand-new Guitar Concerto, and the incomparable Christine Goerke, whose breathtaking voice and commanding presence continue to captivate audiences worldwide.

This season reflects music that has shaped my own creative journey as well: Strauss’s virtuosic  Don Juan, Copland’s rugged and expansive  Billy the Kid, and Shostakovich’s mighty Fifth Symphony— a work of immense drama, resilience, and coded defiance.

Each piece was chosen not only for its artistic merit, but for its power to move, challenge, and connect us. Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to sharing these unforgettable moments of discovery with you at Maryland Hall, the Music Center at Strathmore, Meyerhoff, and beyond.
