Forty works by forty artists over four decades of An Lanntair

On the 8th of March 1985 An Lanntair was officially opened in our original upstairs premises in Stornoway Town Hall by one of the Island’s most esteemed sons, the late writer Iain Crichton Smith.

Since then, a lot of water has gone under the bridge. But rather than labour the point with a list of triumphs and awards, landmarks and watersheds, challenges and reckonings, or the luminaries who established, developed and sustained us, suffice to say that An Lanntair is now a leading light in the arts firmament of Scotland. A beacon just as our name suggests.

To mark the occasion, this exhibition is both retrospective and looks to the future. An anthology, comprised of works by 40 of the artists we have represented, encouraged and supported in various capacities over these past four decades. It includes pieces by some who are no longer with us, by established practitioners, and by others who are at an earlier stage in their practice.

SUE BLAIR STUDIO VISIT

FRI 9 MAY 2pm- 3.30pm

Borgh Pottery

£8 / £7 members & concessions EDUCATION

Visit Artist and Ceramicist Sue Blair at her studio Borgh Pottery in Fivepenny, Borgh. Sue will talk to the group about her creative background and current work, and give insights into her practices. Enjoy a browse in the pottery and established garden. There will be plenty of time for questions and a cup of tea or coffee.

Sue Blair has been a ceramicist since establishing the business with her late husband Alex, as Stornoway Pottery in 1974, moving to Borgh in 1978. Its critical, commercial success, and longevity is a testimony to the enduring quality of her work. In the 90s Sue enrolled at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen as a mature student, elevating her horizons and the depth and range of her work. On graduating it resulted in Pàrras (Paradise), an ambitious, interior garden installation with a ceramic fountain as a centrepiece, held at An Lanntair.

The pottery is situated 18 miles north-west of Stornoway on the A857 to Ness (Nis).

The journey takes approximately 25 mins by car and parking is available.

The Borgh Pottery garden was featured on Lios Mhairi/Mairi’s Hebridean Garden on BBC Alba at 8.30 pm on the 9th April.

Exhibition Run: 24 May - 5 July

UAIM AN ÒR: MAIRI GILLIES

An innovative sonic installation on the relationships between place, people, piping, and plants based on the multiple versions of the story Uamh an Òr (The Cave of Gold).

The main theme features a piper who goes into a cave and meets with an untimely end. But there are unique variations on the story, lyrics and melody linked to corresponding caves found across the Gàidhealtachd, which represent portals into the ‘otherworld’ and the place from which creativity is born into Gaelic culture; in particular pìobaireachd (piping).

The title is a play on Fuaim and Uamh, to mean 'seam of gold').

TOUCHING WOOD: LAURA DONKERS

This series of drawings/paintings conveys tactile surfaces as visible artefacts on paper. They are created using ‘Frottage’ (rubbings) to record intimate exchanges between maker, materials and surface. Collected whilst travelling through New Zealand’s South Island in 2020 they depict native tree markings in forests, coastlines and thoroughfares across Te Wai Pounamu (South Is.). They are made with acrylic paint, graphite, wax or conte crayon on handmade paper set onto a cradled plywood panel.

Across the world, ‘touchingwood’ is a common superstition where people look to bring themselves good fortune or ward off bad luck. Many cultures believed woods to be sacred, and that spirits and gods resided in trees. Knocking on tree trunks was to rouse them to ask for their protection, show gratitude for good luck, or chase away demons. It was thought that the sense of touch reconnected them with something of the Divine.

Laura Donkers lives and works in North Uist. She holds a PhD in Contemporary Art Practice (Dundee, 2020), MA in Art and Social Practice (Distinction) (Shetland, 2023), MFA in Art, Society, Publics (Dundee, 2014) and BFA Hons in Fine Art (First Class) (Outer Hebrides, 2011). Her PhD research explored collaborative artistic methods to promote eco-social regeneration for small island communities. It was awarded an SGSAH/AHRC scholarship with additional awards to visit Elam School of Art, University of Auckland. She transformed this research into the creative agency LimenLab, which delivers eco-art projects that document and promote exchange between people and nature at a time of biodiversity loss and climate change.

ARTIST’S SUPPORT

SONGWRITERS CIRCLE

WED 21 MAY

7PM - 9PM

Our monthly songwriters circle is an opportunity for island songwriters to try out ideas on each other with no audience, no pressure and no expectations, just a group of kindred spirits who can offer encouragement and support. A chance to share unfinished songs, ask for feedback, and perhaps find someone to collaborate with.

We welcome musicians at any stage in their creative development, from beginners to experienced musicians looking to try out something new. The songwriters’ circle is hosted by island based musician Andrew Eaton-Lewis.

ARTIST GATHERING

FRI 30 MAY

6PM - 8PM

An Lanntair’s Artist Gatherings are monthly social events for island artists of all disciplines, from music, film and theatre to visual art and design. You do not need to be established or professional to come along – everyone is welcome and we are here to support all forms of creativity. Each month we invite different artists to talk about their work. Our guests in May will be Fiona Simes, who recently started curating a series of exhibitions at Dùsgadh Baile na Cille in Uig, and Ishbel Murray and Ruaridh Urpeth, who will screen Luchd-Ealain San Fhasach, a new film they have made about Hebridean artists for a Culture Collective project called Artists in the Wild. If you’d like to share your work at a future Artist Gathering, contact Andrew Eaton-Lewis at andrew@anlanntair.com. All contributors will be paid a fee.

The An Lanntair Residency programme is designed as a two-way exchange between visiting artists and the island community, offering artists of any discipline, writers and musicians time out to make new work or research new ideas.

The residency has an international focus with past participants coming from over 32 different countries. Our residencies come with an ethos of supporting the communities that they are based in, utilising local knowledge, services and expertise as well as providing a window into the language and culture of the islands.

We aim to benefit those communities, especially young and emerging island talent, fostering new links between them and the wider world, whilst building a greater understanding of island living and feeding into the creative, social and economic wealth of the place. Work created by the residency participants feeds into the broader An Lanntair programme through exhibitions, films, talks and events as well as the artists becoming temporary residents and part of the island social scene.

Henry Butterworth CURRENT RESIDENCIES

is a lens-based artist originally from Sydney/Eora, Australia, based in Glasgow since 2023

My work explores the documentary image, focusing on the intersection of fact and fiction in photography.

‘My primary focus will be documenting the peat-cutting season on the Isle of Lewis in May 2025. I aim to learn about (and record) the traditions of peat-cutting, exploring the cultural significance this practice holds on the Isle of Lewis. Following this, I hope to collaborate with local archivists and public libraries to gain access to archival materials, folklore, and oral histories which would contribute to research and visualisation of the project. I hope to also engage with local communities to better understand their connection to the land, particularly how oral storytelling, Scottish Gaelic poetry, and mythology are used to preserve the island's culture and history.’ www.henry-butterworth.com

Michele Marcoux

is undertaking an RSA residency at an Lanntair. During her stay she will explore abandoned habitations/sheilings, using this opportunity to experiment with approaches, finding new synergies between improvisation outdoors and more considered studio working. ‘I often work outdoors in places with a past—remote, sometimes abandoned. These landscapes offer solitude and space for improvisation. In the studio, found objects, images, and video serve as aide-mémoires. Through painting, drawing, and imagination, I extract stories from materials, mark-making, and gesture. The narratives and imagery which appear, are influenced by film, literature and myth. Histories of displacement, ghost stories and the experience of being an identical twin inform my work. Through this process, I am looking for overlaps and reciprocities of story and form’ www.michelemarcoux.com

Her award winning collaborative project ‘Eyes as Big as Plates’, with Karoline Hjorth, includes portraits shot on the portraits shot on the Isle of Lewis and Uist in 2019 & will be exhibited as part of the Residency events. Since 2018 Riitta has incorporated Winter swimming in the Atlantic as part of her artistic practice. She started this as a way to connect with collaborators across the Atlantic and during the 2020 global pause the surf at Rockaway peninsula became her link to her Nordic roots. For her residency she’s collaborating with international photographer Mhairi Law at Island Darkroom to present ‘Seachange Hebrides’ a beach, sauna and portraiture-based event celebrating World Ocean Day. She will also be exhibiting at Island Darkroom and An Lanntair where she’ll also give a talk. ONETOONE:JOHNANDYOKO

On August 30, 1972, in New York City, John Lennon played his only full-length show after leaving The Beatles, the One to One Benefit Concert, a rollicking, dazzling performance from him and Yoko Ono.

This riveting documentary takes that epic musical event and uses it as the starting point to recreate eighteen defining months in the lives of John and Yoko. The film uses a riotous mélange of American TV to conjure the era through what the two would have been seeing on the tube: the Vietnam War, The Price is Right, Nixon, Coca-Cola ads, Cronkite, The Waltons. As they experience a year of love and transformation in the US, John and Yoko begin to change their approach to protest — ultimately leading to the One to One concert, which was inspired by a Geraldo Rivera exposé they watched on TV.

SLADEINFLAME

Described as ‘the Citizen Kane of British pop movies’ by critic Mark Kermode, Slade in Flame both confounded and delighted audiences when it was released in 1975, at the height of the legendary glam-rock band’s success, starring the band themselves, this was a music film like no other.

Charting the rise and fall of a pop group at the end of the 1960s, this darkly cynical, warts-and-all portrait of a band in freefall amidst the music-industry suits who want a piece of the pie was not what anybody was expecting. Slade in Flame has been newly remastered by the BFI from the best available 35mm materials.

WARPAINT:WOMENATWAR

Margy Kinmonth’s feature documentary shines a light on the trailblazing role of women war artists, on the front lines round the world, championing the female perspective on conflict through art and asking: when it's life or death, what do women see that men don't? Traditionally a male domain, war art by women has been largely unrecognised. Until now...

Culture breaks the taboo, crosses borders - tells the truth to power. Artists featured include Dame Rachel Whiteread, Zhanna Kadyrova, Maggi Hambling, Assil Diab, Dame Laura Knight, Marcelle Hanselaar, Cornelia Parker, Maya Lin, Shirin Neshat and Lee Miller. An entirely female cast of contributors makes this film a unique undertaking – telling vital truths in turbulent times.
