UAIM AN ÒIR : MAIRI GILLIES

An innovative sonic installation on the relationships between place, people, piping, and plants based on the multiple versions of the story Uamh an Òr (The Cave of Gold).

The main theme features a piper who goes into a cave and meets with an untimely end. But there are unique variations on the story, lyrics and melody linked to corresponding caves found across the Gàidhealtachd, which represent portals into the ‘otherworld’ and the place from which creativity is born into Gaelic culture; in particular pìobaireachd (piping).

The title is a play on Fuaim and Uamh, to mean ‘seam of gold’).

AN TURAS: THE CROSSING KEN

CURRIE

VISUAL ARTS

The Crossing transports viewers to an unknown archipelago, characterised by its desolate and barren islands and towering sea stacks. The landscapes, reminiscent of the westernmost islands of the Outer Hebrides, feature eroded rock towers that emerge from a deep, black sea, foaming and spraying at their bases.

In this stark and unforgiving environment, an unidentified community endures a precarious existence without shelter. Stranded or perhaps in a state of perpetual waiting, figures balance barefoot on guano-coated rock faces and navigate the waters in wooden-hulled vessels, steered by hooded ferrymen through the treacherous sea stacks. Their weatherbeaten appearance is marked by salt-stung, red-tinged eyes and skin. Currie's paintings are imbued with imagery evocative of inherited folklore, ritual, and faith.

The Crossing III

Given that the catalyst for these paintings was Currie’s experiences over several years in the Western Isles it is fitting that they should return to be exhibited in this part of the world.

Ken Currie shared the following words about this new body of work from his studio journal:

People of the Sea. People on the Edge. People at Extremes. Contested Land. Crossing the Sea. Eviction. Evasion. Evacuation. Displacement. Dispossession. Destitution.

The paintings were originally exhibited in London last year and for this exhibition at An Lanntair Currie has created a number new works specifically for the space.

ABOUT KEN CURRIE

Ken Currie (b 1960) studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1978–1983 and rose to attention within a generation of painters known as the ‘New Glasgow Boys’ in the 1980s. He is renowned for his unsettling portrayal of the human figure. The artist’s rich, luminous paintings depict mysterious rites, rituals, and quasi-medical practices, offering a meditation on violence in its many guises.

Ken Currie has exhibited widely internationally, including a 2013 solo exhibition at the National Galleries of Scotland, which also commissioned his painting Three Oncologists. Currie’s work is held in many major public collections including Tate, London; National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh; New York Public Library; Imperial War Museum, London; Campbelltown Arts Centre, New South Wales; Yale Center for British Art, New Haven; Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon; and the British Council, London.

WHERE THE OCEAN REMEMBERS THE SKY: KATE MCFADYEN

This collection of paintings reflects my memory of a place that is now etched into my heart forever.

I am so delighted to be holding my debut solo show on Harris and Lewis, where I have been made to feel so welcome.

“Wheretheoceanremembersthesky“ is the culmination of ten years study with the Open College of the Arts and my graduation exhibition.

In the summer of 2024, while searching for inspiration I embarked on a self‑directed residency to the Isles of Harris and Lewis, a place I had never visited before.

From the moment I stepped ashore I knew I had found the perfect place, I felt a real sense of coming home, an emotion that is hard to describe in words, but one I poured into every brushstroke and painting.

Harris and Lewis, from the vivid turquoise seas to the bright white sands, and the ever-present wind, has an atmosphere and landscape beyond words that almost feels like stepping back in time.

An island, who’s people remain in tune with nature and the elements.

WheretheOceanRememberstheSky….

The space where sea, cloud and heart all meet and the echo of Gaelic song is carried by the wind.

ARTIST GATHERING

FRI 25 JULY 6PM

An Lanntair’s Artist Gatherings are monthly social events for island artists of all disciplines, from music, film and theatre to visual art and design. You do not need to be established or professional to come along – everyone is welcome and we are here to support all forms of creativity.

Each month we invite different artists to talk about their work. If you’d like to share your work at a future Artist Gathering, contact Andrew Eaton-Lewis at andrew@anlanntair.com. All contributors will be paid a fee.

The An Lanntair Residency programme is a two-way exchange between visiting artists and the island community, offering time and space for creative work or research. Open to all disciplines, the residency has hosted artists from over 32 countries and emphasizes local engagement, drawing on island knowledge and culture. Focused on mutual benefit, the programme supports local communities— especially young talent—while building global connections and enriching island life. Participants often share their work through exhibitions, talks, and events, becoming part of both An Lanntair’s programme and the island’s social fabric.

CURRENT RESIDENCIES

RESIDENCIES

We have ‘Muir is Tir’ sailing residency in partnership with Sail Britain 28 June - 4 July. The residency is across disciplines with 6 participants taking part – it’s based on the ocean on board the yacht ‘Merlin’ between Lewis, Harris and Uist, utilising The Shiants and different anchorages each day as a hub to explore from.

‘Muir is Tìr’ is based on the Gaelic sea-lore book of the same name by George Macleod. It utilises the land and seascapes of the Outer Hebrides at high Summer as both venue and research arena, offering a window into the traditions, language, culture and communities of the islands through an involved and participatory approach.

THEATRE SUMMER SCHOOL

An Lanntair will run a week long creative course for young people aged 10 – 18 to devise and perform a unique piece of theatre. Drama practitioners will lead workshops in performance skills, devising a new story, rehearsing the created piece and preparing the cast to perform to an audience. Each day will begin with physical and vocal warm ups, and then the groups will agree on their creative brief for the day. At the end of each day all participants will share their created work and reflect on their experiences. The process will give young people hands-on experience of the processes involved in creating theatre. The workshops will progress young people’s skills, confidence and selfawareness and let them experience the excitement of creative theatre. Please bring a packed lunch and wear comfortable clothes. Water and snacks will be provided.

There are funded places available, please get in touch if you have any issues with the cost of the activity as we may be able to help. Contact Joe Mahony on joe@anlanntair.com for information.
