The An Lanntair Residency programme is a two-way exchange between visiting artists and the island community, offering time and space for creative work or research. Open to all disciplines, the residency has hosted artists from over 32 countries and emphasizes local engagement, drawing on island knowledge and culture. Focused on mutual benefit, the programme supports local communities especially young talent—while building global connections and enriching island life. Participants often share their work through exhibitions, talks, and events, becoming part of both An Lanntair’s programme and the island’s social fabric.

We also have ‘Muir is Tir’ sailing residency in partnership with Sail Britain 28 June - 4 July. The residency is across disciplines with 6 participants taking part – it’s based on the ocean on board the yacht ‘Merlin’ between Lewis, Harris and Uist, utilising The Shiants and different anchorages each day as a hub to explore from.

‘Muir is Tìr’ is based on the Gaelic sea-lore book of the same name by George Macleod. It utilises the land and seascapes of the Outer Hebrides at high Summer as both venue and research arena, offering a window into the traditions, language, culture and communities of the islands through an involved and participatory approach.

RANT

A decade on from their first performance – and with 3 acclaimed albums under their belt – RANT remain at the forefront of the Scottish fiddle scene. The meeting of four of the country’s finest players, the quartet use just their fiddles to weave a tapestry of melodies, textures, layers and sounds.

Bethany Reid from Shetland, Anna Massie and Lauren MacColl from the Highland peninsula of the Black Isle, and latest member Gillian Frame from Arran join forces to showcase the combined resonance of their instruments with repertoire unearthed from both old collections and their own contemporary writing. RANT create a sound which is both spacious and lush, yet retaining all the earthy bite and spark synonymous with a Scottish fiddle player. Their latest album – ‘The Portage’ – was recorded over 4 days in the renowned Mackintosh Queen’s Cross, the only church in the world to be designed by architect, artist and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The recording – a stark and honest reflection of their live sound – was awarded ‘Top of the World’ status from Songlines Magazine. Their live set reflects their years of honing their sound together and their love for the music of their respective home regions through their writing, repertoire and stories.

The last time Bensider played An Lanntair was March 2020, (the last gig before lockdown!!)

Bensider is a collective of talented musicians that formed around Graham (the Bensider) to help bring his songs to life. Much of the original material is inspired by Graham’s upbringing on the Isle of Lewis, coming late to music and songwriting he wrote his first song at the age of 42 and they just keep coming as he approaches his 60 year. th

Alongside Graham, (lead vocals/guitar), are Roy Hunter, (double bass), Libby McGugan, (fiddle), Mike Munro, (trumpet) and Seth Gardener, (percussion)

Bensider music is hard to categorise and is influenced by many genres but is probably best described as acoustic, swingy folk with a dark edge.

Review of Bensider from a recent charity gig for Alzheimer Scotland at Stereo Glasgow:

“After two (great) solo acts it was good to see a full band take to the stage next and what a joy they turned out to be. Yet more Scottish, Americana but with songs brand new to my ears but sounding like I’ve heard them 100 times before and a trumpet player I could listen to solo all night long (now there’s something I never thought I would ever say)”

In conjunction with Drunken Promotions.
