Expanding our Horizons in 2023
Looking back over my career, I realise that have invested 20 years of my life working towards sustainability within this industry. Most of the time, I was alone in my convictions amongst my peers, but I continued preaching best practice to industry players and trying to lead by example because I was absolutely convinced that this was the way forward.
So, did I manage to change the world on my own?
Not really!
But now, as the President of IFES, I am honoured to have the backing of an entire community of likeminded colleagues who can help me to effect this change, and more. These IFES members are the partners whom I need to drive transformation, welcome new standards, and pave the way for the younger generation of exhibition professionals.
The family connection
One of things that sets IFES apart is our members’ shared passion for the Exhibition and Events industry. I love the people in this industry. We respect and trust each other and our global network expands our businesses through mutual support. Wherever we work in the world, there is a local, trusted IFES partner that can, and will, provide the services our customers need, at the
same standards, with the same care and value that we ourselves would provide. Ours is a ‘family business’ with a fiercely loyal bond.
Globalisation
The IFES network stretches worldwide, but in the coming years we will turn our attention to areas that may be underrepresented to achieve a more even spread. Our first World Summit in Singapore this year will strengthen our collaboration with the Asian Exhibition and Event industry, and we hope to welcome more members to our family because of our time there.
The road to sustainability
I am a firm believer that for our industry to remain viable, all of us, wherever we are, need to work together to coordinate the changes that we need to move us forward. As IFES members, with a genuinely “coopetitive” approach we realise that investing time in cooperating with our competitors and sharing knowledge, can only advance the industry and help us adapt to challenges as they arise.
Sustainability has been a key focus for us for some time but is an increasingly urgent issue. Of course, the fundamentals of our way of working form a bridge to take us into a more sustainable future. IFES members’ ability to work locally anywhere in the

world removes the need to travel or transport equipment which significantly reduce our carbon emissions and environmental impact.

We have pledged our support for Net Zero Carbon Events and continue to ramp up our efforts, provide training and assist our members to embed sustainable practices into their organisations.
Focusing on the bigger picture

In short, in 2023 we are broadening our horizons, because the wider our reach, the more effective and sustainable we become. We have a strong worldwide network of service providers, but 2023 will bring more vertical expansion too. We plan to work more closely with Venues, PCOS, Associations and larger organisations to bring them on board with our principles and connect them to our network to benefit our industry overall.
Everyone is an important player within their own market, but being part of IFES expands your capabilities, generates more business and links you to a global community on which you can always rely.
We value your support. As always, we are better together than apart!
PHILIPPE BEILLE, IFES PRESIDENTExpanding Horizons
We have proven resilience when the pandemic hit us. We have shown flexibility when business bounced back. Now we are at a stage where we can improve our business one step further.

Global collaboration, sharing knowledge and partnership at eye level – the core values of IFES – are valid assets for the upcoming challenges. We understand that getting more sustainable in the way we act is vital, trade shows and events don’t stand alone but are linked to several other communication media, our customers are increasingly value-driven and the future leaders in our companies are expecting more than just regularly paid wages. We have to adapt to these changes in the same way that we adapted to the challenges we experienced over the past three years.
With all this in the back of our minds we are ready to expand our horizons; with new collaborations like those with JMIC and IAPCO, taking our World Summit further east than ever before to the vibrant City of Singapore, with sustainable improvements that are touchable and measurable, and with ITT members who are the future.
“When it matters, people meet” is one key finding of the pandemic. Looking forward to meeting you in person real soon!
Lessons from a pandemic

The IFES Board is evolving to embrace a new future. We are seeing meaningful recovery within the Exhibition and Events Industry and we are starting a new year with enthusiasm and hope for a brighter future. Our IFES Board reflects on what the experiences of the past couple of years have taught us and how we can carry those lessons forward to inform our decision making, strengthen our collective vision and reassess what is important in our business trajectory.
Philippe Bielle IFES PresidentAs 2023 dawns, we need to ask ourselves whether we are making the “best” choices or the “right” choices to take us forward.
While a successful business is all about making money and making what we believe to be the “best” choices will help us earn even more money; is that really as important as we think? The almost complete closure of our industry over the past two years made us look at things a little differently. We need to dig deeper to see whether the “best” choices are necessarily the “right” choices for us. While we certainly need to be able to make money , it

is even more important to be able to make money for as long as possible. It is only by making the “right” choices that we can achieve this objective.
For me personally, the two most critical “right” choices are clear.
The first choice is to increase our commitment to sustainable development. It may cost us a bit more in the short term, but it is essential to drive change if we intend to be in business in 10 years’ time. Money is a necessity, but it is not what we should be focusing on today.
The second prerequisite is to understand that our businesses are nothing without people. Teamwork affords us the greatest achievements and love and emotion provide enough leverage to move mountains. Doing things with a purpose makes sense; this is the key driver for younger talents who are the future generation of our industry.
IFES supports members in growing their businesses by
working together, all around the world. Rest assured that IFES will also support members to drive the changes, to inspire, and to train, for the betterment of our industry overall.
break-down times. This pressure was exacerbated by the loss of key staff during the pandemic.
I do believe that 2023 will be an easier year for our industry, with advance planning of events, some staff returning to our industry, and new staff gaining greater experience.

Hawes Past IFES President
This past year has been a rollercoaster ride. At the beginning of 2022 we were still very much in the Covid-19 pandemic, and large gatherings and events were not taking place. But gradually as the pandemic eased, exhibitions and conferences started happening again, often at short notice and with very tight lead times. People wanted to make up for lost time and the big demand placed on venues, resulted in short build-up and
The last couple of years have shown us the importance of face-to-face interaction and the desire for in-person events, exhibitions and conferences is stronger than ever. However, I think that in-person events will be complemented by an online element, resulting in more hybrid events. With the growing focus on the impact of climate change, sustainability is important and hybrid events make sense.
When I look back on the last couple of years, I am amazed at how we have endured. Our industry is filled with problem-solving, creative, resilient types and we will put these attributes to good use in 2023 as we recover and grow.
Scenario planning for the New World of in-person events
Over the past two years, event experience leaders showed agility in the face of constant change as they pivoted to virtual and hybrid formats, offering experiences that engaged attendees while safeguarding against the spread of COVID-19. Today, as restrictions loosen and people begin to feel more comfortable meeting, the demand for in-person events has returned. These events will occur in a changing world, with heightened expectations and evolved attitudes toward in-person ex pe riences.
In this critical moment, event experience leaders must build on lessons from their pandemic pivots to chart a new course for in-person events. Unfortunately, there’s no crystal ball to offer a perfect roadmap to delivering a new in-person experience. In lieu of clairvoyance, scenario planning equips organisers to pursue the best possible event outcome, no matter what event experience planners face.
Identify Four Possible Scenarios. Strategic foresight expert Peter Scobic describes scenario planning as “a constant cycle between imagining the future and acting in the present” – an apt description of the last few years of event planning.
Justin
One of the biggest positive takeaways for us arises from the challenges we faced especially in the aftermath of the pandemic: the importance of flexibility. The unpredictable situation demanded last minute solutions, preparing us not only to be more flexible but also to create a more dynamic working environment around ourselves.
As each and every one of us was forced to familiarise themselves with new communication tools, everyone and everything became more connected, more reachable. Long-distance meetings and working from home became the norm.
But many people have had enough of home office, virtual
meetings, and on-screen connections. The effect of REAL human contact is unmatched, which is why our industry, even after a global pandemic, will not be replaced by, or moved into the virtual space. It will rather find a coexistence with the latter. The rules may have slightly changed, and the cards reshuffled, but at its core, the game remains the same.
Finances have been a huge issue during the pandemic, for our association and especially for most of our members and our entire industry. While some countries offered good “rescue packages,” others could unfortunately not provide any help at all. Nobody was prepared for this devastating situation.
Luckily, things have changed in the last couple of months and look brighter although the prices are exploding in most fields.
With the new Executive Board, our Management Office, and our members, I aim to generate a solid financial base for our association and create clear
benefits for our members with new products and services. Alone we cannot make the difference. Let’s work on it!
Peter Theodorides IFESHow can one best summarise the post-pandemic exhibition industry recovery? Survival of the fittest, exhausting times, change management, or simply, life goes on!

What we all have experienced and endured over the last 14 months in our sector,
As you plan your next event experience, commit to a bold, sharp purpose early and identify your desired outcomes. Then imagine how shifting world events could jeopardise the path to reaching those outcomes. Focus on what would most significantly affect the ideal path to your objectives and develop four pivot scenarios that preserve your event’s goals while responding to the moment.
Look for Signals and Warnings. Once you’ve considered how world events could change your event’s execution, define the warning signs your team should look for as they plan. Pinpoint issues to monitor, brainstorm disparate outcomes, and lay out how different signals map to planned alternate scenarios. Gartner identifies seven key areas of disruptive change to review for any strategic planning initiatives:
• Technological: the evolution and impact of technological change.
• Political: shifting attitudes, institutions, and legislation.
• Economic: local and global economic factors.
• Social/Cultural: attitudes, behaviours, and lifestyles, both individual and societal.
• Trust/Ethics: ethical expectations, behaviours, duties, and biases.

can only be truly appreciated by those within our industry. The struggles, endless nights, ongoing changes and coping with hard realities, made us aware that we always need to be able to diversify and remain flexible But most importantly, we need to keep our heads up, make plans, get back on our feet and continue to do what we do best with a passion for exhibitions and events!
There is no doubt that 2022 proved to all of us that we are back on track and ready to tackle an even more dynamic 2023. The new IFES Board is committed to meeting new challenges, and is united, stronger, and determined to invest the time and effort to realise our goals.
I am confident that together with your active participation in our events, our new “strategic partners” to open new possibilities and markets for you, and the
new members expected in the upcoming years; IFES will continue to flourish as the only truly worldwide networking association for many more years...
this reason, it is essential to let them have their say and to determine the path together with us “experienced” ones.

Recent experiences and corresponding challenges have shown us once again that it is our purpose to work and grow together as an industry. Using a collaborative network effectively to cope with the hurdles and challenges of the coming years makes more than just sense. Topics such as Community building, digitization and sustainability are the drivers of the next generation – our future clients. Precisely for
The industry needs to drive a change of perspective, also by heart. As Co-Chair of our Sustainability Committee and Co-Chair of the Net-Zero Carbon Events Initiative, I would like to – once more – highlight the topic of sustainability as the license to operate our future business in the events industry, no matter where we stand in the value chain. Sustainable solutions are not add-ons to our usual course of actions, they will become standard, and economically the key to succeed. We need to step forward. Our first impulse needs to be the urge to establish concepts & strategies, events & exhibitions with all corresponding partners right from the beginning.
I would like to invite you to start small and start now.
• Regulatory/Legal: changes in policies rewarding or punishing particular behaviours.
• Environmental: technical, political, economic, cultural, ethical, and legal changes. Not every factor will apply to every event, but the framework facilitates a comprehensive approach to anticipating change.
Agree on a Source of Truth. Your team must align on trusted resources to stay ahead of significant changes and adjust as needed. Rather than follow the shifting winds of a bevy of headlines, agree on critical data sources like public expert perspectives, trusted analyst sources and respected polling agencies. Using shared sources to identify signals of change provides consistency that drives unified decision-making.
Tap Into Your Wisdom. Event experience leaders are more prepared than ever to tackle tough questions and develop creative solutions. Every organizer solved new problems, reimagined the boundaries of events, and pushed the limits of flexibility at the height of the pandemic. Don’t treat the re-emergence of events as a return to business as usual. Imbue your work with all the wisdom and lessons learned from virtual and hybrid events.
Open the Lines of Communication. Change comes fast, and teams cannot react with agility and precision unless they’re on the same page. Transparency is key to free-flowing information.

Education
Here we are again at the gates of a new year, re-evaluating and rethinking our goals and objectives. After the last few years, in which the world situation forced us to look very deeply into our companies and our lives, and also put us on an equal footing with the rest of the world; I can confirm that education and self-initiative are the most solid bases we have to find the creativity and the strategy to make our companies grow under any circumstances.
Within the board we will continue our work to give your organisation access to quality information and training in the
field of tradeshow & event marketing by providing opportunities for continuing education.
Updating, Specialisation and Improvement content will be proposed throughout the year in our events and activities to complete, expand and develop the level of knowledge and experience, adding value to IFES membership within the IFES family.
marketing activities and business travel, the industry is riding the momentum to fully recover in two to three years. Manpower shortages exacerbated by the pandemic presented a great challenge for our industry, alongside compressed planning, and delivery timelines. While the industry went through unprecedented challenges, the IFES community demonstrated unity and strength, rendering support for each other, steadfastly responding to occasional calls for assistance.

The strong rebound of exhibitions and events globally reaffirms the importance and resilience of our industry. With the re-opening of borders and ensuing pent-up demand for
How often have we heard now that sustainability will be our licence to operate? As designers and producers of the events industry, we have to rethink, with sustainability as a key component of our design strategies. Collectively as an industry, we are able to move the needle. We must evolve and we have to embark on this journey, if we have not, it is now!
Technology supporting clear communication and real-time updates of event planning details helps teams from becoming siloed, losing valuable time and energy constantly realigning.
Map It Out. Consider the steps for executing each scenario you’ve developed. Identify the stakeholders and specify the information they’ll need to change course from your intended format, timing, and location.
Using comprehensive planning technology to execute changes instantaneously fosters consistency in times of uncertainty. A flexible event design blending digital elements into an in-person structure from the beginning enables a smooth transition to hybrid or fully virtual to address changing circumstances.
And once you’ve mapped out the steps to shift from your initial plan, identify any new snags you may introduce.
Scenario planning can’t account for every possibility, but it offers a strong foundation for Event Experience Leaders navigating a new world of in-person events. When your team uses scenario planning, it becomes innate to your event experience management as you imagine the future and act in the present.
IFES Board Member, Associations
Don’t trust humans or politicians when you see their mouths move Specifically, don’t trust humans when it comes to predictions. Why?
Humans are fundamen tally flawed when it comes to predictions. We’re way too emotional, affected by bias, needs, and wants, and discard facts/ history too readily. But that doesn’t sound like much fun.
I dread being asked for my predictions for the industry, the future, the economy, tech, hybrid, work from home etc. etc. and in my role as an association director I get asked a fair amount. The best prediction for me is trust in your behaviour, it’s predictable, mostly. No prediction in the world can affect you more than how you act as a person or business. The world, now more than ever, is full of the eponymous Black Swan events. It’s becoming harder not to utter Que Sera, Sera when we turn on the news. So, trust in your community, your IFES community, continue to pull tight and in the same direction, seek those that hold your values. Seek collaboration
and not competition . The next 12 months are going to be determined in the main by decisions you make, not others, but don’t think you have to do this alone.

Martijn Besaris Coopted IFES Board member Talent Team

What a year; from a lockdown at the beginning of the year straight into a continuous sprint to the end of the year! I am so happy that shows are running again, that we can build booths and can look and plan months

and years ahead instead of only for tomorrow.
The reopening of our industry has also brought new issues, including shortages of labour and materials. Attracting and retaining young talent has become challenging across all levels of business but especially amongst the men and women working in the field and in the workshop. Together with the IFES Talent Team I am working on programs and activities to address this, to create awareness and be the voice of the younger generation.
But we can’t do this alone and we invite you all to support us in investing in a bright and hopeful future.

Next steps for sustainable events

The fast-paced ‘build-up, break-down and move on’ nature of exhibitions and events does not naturally lend itself to a sustainable working methodology, but the necessity for sustainable practice to become a core element in all of our daily business activities is undeniable, and increasingly urgent.
Many stakeholders in the events and exhibitions industry have pledged to meet the goal of net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 in line with the Net Zero Carbon Events movement and the Paris Agreement on climate neutrality, but the industry is adapting at varying rates, and it will require some serious commitment to accomplish these goals.
The launch of the Net Zero Carbon Events (NZCE) Roadmap at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP27 on
11 November 2022 in Egypt signified another milestone in the Sustainability journey for the events industry. The International Federation of Exhibition & Event Services (IFES), alongside 40 of our organisation members, have pledged to this initiative with our Sustainability team contributing to the development of the roadmap.
Hence, the ISO certification is an invitation to our community to get things started, to show our stakeholders (clients, employees, political institutions,
scientific bodies etc.) that our industry is committed and is defining a way to meet goals in a common and certified manner.
Much progress for this Roadmap has been achieved since the launch of the initiative a year before. It is a useful tool to guide our industry members on the next step forward. For those who want to embark on the sustainability journey but are clueless on how to get started, the Roadmap details how to implement actions. Sustainability has been a topic of discussion
in the industry for a decade already, but this Roadmap is an indication of commitment, dedication and, more importantly, walking the talk.
The IFES Sustainability team’s effort since our summit in Amsterdam in June 2022 has been focused on information sharing on the pursuit of sustainability certification, specifically ISO20121:2012 on event sustainability management through 2 consultants, 2bdifferent and Green Evénements. An attempt was made to encourage group pursuit of certification alongside other IFES members, to make the journey more cohesive, collaborative and cost-effective. The first convoy started last December; but still the interest was lukewarm. Does the certification process seem onerous? Is it too costly for our

members? Is sustainability still not a priority for our industry? Do our members think that certification is not essential? Is ISO20121 not the ideal certification? Or maybe we are just too preoccupied with project

delivery? These are just some of the questions that our team has pondered over.
Certainly, certification is not the most important to an organisation embarking on its sustaina bility journey. Certainly, for some markets it is more important than for others.
What could be more pertinent than having sustainable practices in place to get started and understanding what best practices can be put in place towards being a more sustainable company and industry?
The IFES Sustainability core team, together with Experiential Designers & Producers Association (EDPA) and other industry stakeholders, is now involved in one of the NZCE work streams to address “Smart Production & Waste Management” as
• Ecological roadmaps to avoid, reduce and compensate/offset own carbon footprint creating carbon neutrality

the next phase of the development for the Roadmap. In addition, these members of the team are involved in parallel initiatives around the world to do more for sustainability for our industry.
Governments and organisations around the world are giving greater focus to sustainability. Singapore launched its sustainability roadmap on 1 Dec 2022 to
become Asia Pacific’s leading sustainable MICE destination by 2030. The roadmap launched by Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and Singapore Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers (SACEOS), lists 3 specific targets.
1. The development of a set of sustainability standards by 2023 that the industry can readily apply with the aim of
Our contribution/expectations towards sustainability
being internationally recognised by 2024.
2. All six purpose-built MICE venues within Singapore and 80% of SACEOS members to obtain internationally or nationally-recognised sustainability certification, or both, by 2025.
3. The Singapore MICE industry to start tracking waste and carbon emissions by 2023.
Concrete steps
• First round of ISO 20121 certification began in December 2022. IFES members who take part will establish a structured sustainability management. Benefits of the certification: transparency, credibility, structured sustainability management, competitive advantage as sustainability will be a client need.

• Net Zero Carbon Events Initiative set up a roadmap incl. responsibilities for main action areas: e.g. CO2 reduction, (food)waste management, logistics,… Next step: transmitting the roadmap to IFES, reaching consesus on roadmap, finding tools to reach goals
More countries are expecting listed companies to embark on mandatory or more stringent sustainability reporting. Increasingly, we are facing clients or prospects asking us for our Sustainability Policy in their procurement processes, Event Organisers are striving to make their events more sustainable, and our employees want to work for a more sustainable company. For those who are still adopting a wait-and-see approach, I urge you to re-think and take the first step.
Collectively, we can move the needle. If every IFES member adopts a sustainable work process today, we can be a more sustainable industry tomorrow. Let us commit, collaborate and start reducing our impact on the environment today.
SARAH CHEW, CHAIR IFES SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE

Net Zero Carbon Events
IFES has re-joined the Joint Meetings Industry Council, the driving force behind Net Zero Carbon Events – a global initiative uniting the events industry to achieve net zero by 2050.
The initiative, launched in 2021 at COP26 in Glasgow, brings together event industry stakeholders from around the world including conference, exhibition and event organisers, convention bureaux, venues and other suppliers. The aim is to drive collective action from across the sector to meet key sustainability milestones.

Since its launch, more than 400 conference and events industry organisations from 55 countries have pledged to achieve net zero carbon by 2050. Every events organisation is invited to join and sign the Pledge. By signing it, the organisation commits to support
the goal of net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, in line with global efforts set out by the Paris Agreement to limit warming to 1.5°C and reduce total global GHG emissions by 50% by 2030, and to actively promote and advocate for industry efforts throughout the value chain. Specific goals are as follows:
1. Before the end of 2023, publish the organisation’s pathway to achieve net zero by 2050 at the latest, with an interim target in line with the Paris Agreement’s requirement to reduce global GHG emissions by 50% by 2030.
2. Collaborate with partners, suppliers and customers to drive change across the value chain.
3. Measure and track its Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions according to industry best practice.
4. Report on its progress at least every two years.
The next stage of the Net Zero Carbon Events initiative was the launch of the Roadmap launched recently at COP27 in Egypt. The Roadmap provides a common framework for all event industry stakeholders to support and guide them to achieve the net zero target. It sets out a comprehensive pathway for individual organisations as well as details around the five key industry-wide action areas: venue energy, food and food waste, logistics, travel and accommodation as well as smart production and waste management. IFES will be the leading entity for the latter.
JMIC’s President James Rees explains: “The Roadmap will support and guide organisations through the process of achieving Net Zero linked to our target. It’s an ambitious target, but it’s one we really must meet. We have no choice – we have to act and we have to do so now.
“Addressing this fundamental sustainability challenge is a global and united effort - and we need to drive consistency across our industry. Net Zero Carbon Events is here to bring people together and affect real change.”

New Strategic Partnership agreed between and
The International Association of Professional Congress Organisers (IAPCO) and the International Federation of Exhibition and Events Services (IFES) have agreed a new 3-year Memorandum of Understanding which will see both organisations’ communities benefit across a number of initiatives.
At their most recent Meeting, held in Dubai, IAPCO Council unanimously agreed to a new collaboration with IFES, the first of its kind for both associations. The collaboration will see experts from both organisations share knowledge and educational content through industry events, seminars and webinars, visibility via on-line recognition, and business development opportunities.
Ori Lahav, IAPCO President commented “Many IAPCO member client events require exhibition and stand builds for their global business and professional events. Knowing and having immediate access to the most appropriate and trustworthy partners to work with just makes sense. This new MoU enables IAPCO and IFES members to have more
direct contact, build upon their respective expertise and provide added value across the board to the clients they serve.”
With a membership retention rate of just under 100% over the past 2 years, a growing number of new membership applications and continued support from global partners, IAPCO continues to focus its attention on providing added value and new services to its members. The MoU that outlines this Strategic Partnership is another great example of the value that PCOs can expect when they have a membership in IAPCO.
“As we enter our fourth decade as an association, I am proud of this new collaboration between IAPCO and the International Federation of
Exhibition and Events Services (IFES), as a manifestation of the IFES motto of “sharing knowledge”. We look forward to a long and beneficial partnership with IAPCO and its members, through which we will be able to support our respective members by generating more business together.
I believe that the pillars on which IFES was founded; trust, human relationships and integrity, will play a vital role in how our associations develop over the next few years.
I am confident that together with IAPCO we can enhance our industry worldwide, move our industries into a more sustainable environment and mutually create the values for the next generation,” says Philippe Beille, IFES President.
Combining fresh ideas with the power of experience

It will be up to the next generation of industry professionals to take our industry forward. Our IFES
Talent Team is specifically aimed at the under 40’s young talent working within our sector – a solutions-driven hub for knowledge sharing, colla boration and brainstorming.
Headed up by a diverse team of young leaders from all over the world (from left to right: Martijn Besaris - Netherlands, Andrew Stevens – Canada, Vanessa Aguilar – US, Henrik Gislerud - Norway, and Boitumelo Pooe - South Africa), this Committee spearheads the drive to trigger fresh ideas, to promote the career opportu nities within the industry, to resolve common issues, to discover and share best practice and to highlight new innovations that meet the ever-changing requirements of the market. The goal is to bring fresh wind to, and raise awareness of the industry, make a valuable impact on the association and inspire long established company leaders to meet customer needs optimally. IFES
Talent Team connects young industry professionals worldwide so that they can then succeed together by sharing knowledge and innovative ideas.
Since the 2022 World Summit, membership of the Talent Team has increased by around 15%. With a strong ITT presence at EuroShop 23 and World Summit 23, we anticipate a further growth spike. The ITT members are the future network of IFES, the new generation IFES family. We urge all our members to put forward potential young talent from their companies to participate. The ITT Committee is the spark to ignite the industry to move forward with a new approach and the latest technology, in the most sustainable way!
OBJECTIVES:
• To encourage the input of young talent within the IFES Association.

• To attract and retain young skills into the sector to redress skills shortages.

• To promote knowledge sharing and cross-learning within the under-40’s industry segment.

• To harness creative energy and innovation to enhance the way the industry operates.
• To safeguard the future of the Exhibitions and Events industry by increasing awareness and appeal of the industry amongst the youth.
• Develop Staff Exchange programmes to fast-track experience and build knowledge.

Inspiring exhibition and events industry developments reflect the spirit of new beginnings.

After careful assessment, our hardworking panel of judges have announced the winners of the IFES Development and Innovation Awards 2022. This year’s IDIA Awards Judging panel had their work cut out for them in selecting the winners out of the exciting submissions received.
1 st
PLACE : Global tension fabric giant, Moss,
took first prize. Their product submission presented an exclusive 100% recycled fabric produced for the Global Exhibition market.
SustainaTex Ocean Fabric is produced entirely from upcycled plastic (including marine plastic) and recycled polyester, giving marketers an opportunity to activate their brand in a sustainable way. Moss has signed a license agreement with the SEAQUAL initiative, a community that works with ocean clean up programs, to transform recovered marine plastic into SEAQUAL yarn. The company has also removed all PVC from their gaskets and ships all SEG fabrics in recyclable bags made of 100% recyclable material.

Taking this development even further, Moss offsets all carbon associated with their production activities in the US and in Europe through a German carbon consulting company, ClimatePartner, so that the production method of this fabric is truly carbon neutral.
Judges comment
This product sends a clear signal to our industry that there are superior options that we can use in many of our projects to improve sustainability. The action of taking waste from the sea and turning it into something
useful touches many of us personally, and in fact Moss may have already made their mark on the judges as we will be looking out for this material to incorporate into our own projects. SustainaTex is a good solution to using waste from the sea. It may not be the final answer, but it is a good solution to take us a step forward.

The plan is for the Company to go Carbon Neutral by 2026, through employee awareness creation and a transparent reduction plan. beMatrix envisioned, described, and detailed the concept phase during 2020 -2021, and roll-out began in 2021 under the leadership of the C!&SO (Chief !nnovation and Sustainability Officer), Edwin Van der Vennet and the beMatrix Sustainability team, with the support of external specialists in measuring, reducing & contributing.
ProjectC! ™ recommends approaching sustainability with transparency and a positive mindset and integrating it into the business operation by means of:
• Product development and optimisation to reduce the footprint, avoid waste, optimise reuse, and identify best options using Product Footprint Calculations.
• Company: Calculating the absolute and relative footprint of every single aspect of a company and finding creative, innovative ways to reduce the footprint.

2 nd PLACE : beMatrix, Belgium took second place with ProjectC!™
… their masterplan towards sustainable success across all levels of product, company, and industry with a lasting focus on Economic and Social sustainability.
• Industry: Rethinking the cooperation across the value chain in the event industry (with the Net Zero Events Initiative) including service suppliers to create closer collaboration and more integrated sustainable actions.

Judges comment
It’s critical to start sustainability initiatives from the top level and incorporate them throughout the company at every touchpoint. beMatrix is using a management approach, and this is why their plan is a winner. It’s so exciting to see that they have really thought about what they are doing and
have already started implementing changes. ProjectC!™ is a very impressive Roadmap to take them into a fully circular economy, and they are certainly on a good path to achieve ISO 20121 certification as well.

The third place is awarded to
Kadmon-Brin and GO Exhibitions
… for their thoughtful design of the TEVA Api Booth at CPHI, Frankfurt.

Their client requested an “out- of- the- box +sustainability concept” and Kadmon-Brin exceeded their expectations with this unusual concept empowered by sustainability. This challenging design was built by GO Exhibitions who combined beMatrix modular system in a very creative way at the highest standard. The TEVA stand’s perimeter walls
and counters were constructed completely out of cardboard boxes, designed not only for the look, but also for the structural stability. The stand’s 5 meeting rooms and kitchen/ storage all had glass doors and windows mounted into cardboard walls.
Not only did the concept make use of cradle -to- cradle sustainable material with a low carbon
footprint, but it also ensured that more than 90% of the stand building material was reusable or recyclable, with very little waste. Even the relatively big Videowall was made of beMatrix modular system covered with recycled textile banner. High efficiency LED lighting and a suspended vertical garden provided the finishing touches.
Judges comment
A really great initiative to see carboard boxes used in this way! The look and the curved walls worked very well in the context, showing us what is possible when you work with different types of material in trade fair construction. This is not an out of reach complex design; it shows what you can do with a normal booth when you just put in a little extra thought, so it has broad appeal. This is a tangible, experiential, “out-of-the-box” product. A very cool project that speaks for itself!

Inspirations 2020–2022

Staying connected while apart
Whilst the pandemic ravaged the planet, our Exhibition and Events industry players, who thrive on personal connection, were forced to remain apart from one another. It was bad for business, and it was bad for our mental health, but some of the innovations that emerged from our industry during the past two years will leave a lasting legacy.

Hybrid events are here to stay, and while everyone prefers the in-person experiences, we have learned to integrate remote audiences into our industry in ways that allow higher audience engagement without necessitating travel, are more inclusive and allow for events that are unaffected by external local factors. They provide fully global participation from speakers and audience members around the world, with lower costs and a reduced carbon footprint.
IFES was, of course, also affected, but some of the ways which we devised to keep the ever-important inter-personal connection were invigorating. Shortly after countries went into lockdown, the Skyperol sessions emerged as a weekly virtual get together with like-minded members. These later became known as the Townhall Meetings , a space where members could continue to connect and see each other’s faces, albeit virtually, to catch up, share experiences and swap ideas on how to manage in an uncertain climate.
The Solutions Sessions became a much-anticipated monthly fixture where industry experts
addressed global issues as they emerged. Topics such as What to expect in the New Normal, How to Increase exhibitor and attendee engagement through 3D virtual environments and avatars, Recruit, Retain and Rebuild – finding top event talent in 2021 and Self-care strategies to develop our resilience and live beyond our circumstances , helped members find ways to tackle concerns without losing hope.
The IFES AGM in 2020 was shortened from the usual 3 day, in-person event to a ½ day hybrid event. The official part of the event took place on 25 June from 1pm until 6pm CEST in Hanover at the Hybrid Showroom of Holtmann GmbH & Co. KG and members could attend either face-to-face (regulated by Covid-protocols) or online.

The Masterclass of 2021 in June in Hanover took place one year after the first lockdown hit most parts of the world, helping members to ‘Get back in the Driver’s seat’. It was conducted in an interactive hybrid format with colleagues and customers discussing challenges in preparation for the new future of our industry.
The Dubai Expo 2020 was one of the first expos to reopen at scale. Packages were organised for IFES members wanting to experience this extraordinary expo and meet for the first time in an in-person exhibition setting.
Perhaps the events of the past two years were a necessity, teaching us humility and the value of standing together, while advocacy worldwide informed governments of the value of an industry that had formerly been side-lined. It was a period of invention and innovation, of stretching one’s capabilities, of realising the value of customer relationships, of tightening up safety protocols in our industry – a time that culled and advanced simultaneously. This has been an event that accelerated the digitalisation of the entire communications industry.
Now, we get to empower the new blood that is taking up positions vacated by those who left the industry, embrace our new future and carry our industry forward together with dedication and commitment.
Connecting minds, Connecting people
Running from 1 October 2021 – 31 March 2022 with an amazing 192 national Pavilions, the 2020 World Expo combined the introduction of the Arab culture, with incredible architecture, international friendship and a myriad of business possibilities.

With so many countries still under Covid–19 restriction, an Expo at scale was a beacon of hope, emphasising the role that global connectivity plays in shaping a future in which sustainability, mobility, and emerging opportunities are a key focus.
The best of humankind and the greatest show of our time IFES members were offered the opportunity to experience the remarkable 6-month World Expo for an exciting IFES Study Trip to Dubai in December of 2021. An enthusiastic group of participants were welcomed at dinner at the Kinera Restaurant, JA-Lakeview Hotel on the
evening of the 5th, before embarking on an whirlwind journey the next day which took them from the Mobility District across the German and Belgian Pavillions, the Japanese, Kazakhstan, USA, Spain and New Zealand areas and an illuminating browse through the Sustainability district before seeing out the day on the roof terrace at the Swiss Pavillion.
Wednesday the 7th began in the Opportunity District and IFES members were hosted at the UAE Pavillion before an afternoon reception in Baden-Württemberg in the afternoon. A short Egyptian sight-seeing tour set the tone for dinner courtesy of United Group in an ambiance
reminiscent of 1000 and one nights, closing the official tour programme on a truly memorable note.
Additional program Desert Tour

After three days crammed full of visual attractions, a sojourn into the desert for a calm day of dune cruising and golden hour post tour sundowners slowed the pace a little for members to enjoy an Arabic dinner under the stars together with a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to wear an intricate henna tattoo or ride a camel for those in the mood.

Flashback
Reuniting the global network at World Summit 2022

June 15 – 17, 2022, Amsterdam
The Winds of Change blew strong at IFES’ long-awaited 2022 World Summit held at Amsterdam’s beautiful Felix Meritis– a hotspot for creativity and crossover between scientists, artists, entrepreneurs and thinkers. This 4500 m2 Louis Seize-style building, christened Felix Meritis (“happy through merit”), was built during the Age of Enlightenment, yet proved an ideal choice for a modern AGM.
The excitement was palpable right from the outset, as IFES members began arriving from around the world to enjoy the in-person reunion with colleagues after years apart. In an industry that thrives on connections, around 170 members from more than 30 countries finally had the opportunity to compare experiences and share their learnings after two years under the constraints of the pandemic.
The Summit kicked off with the AGM, feedback and induction of new members, followed
by a memorable Welcome Dinner with Ras Al Khaimah. Attendees were treated to inspiring and thought-provoking talks by speakers Detlef Wintzen, Kai Hattendorf and Käthe Fleischer, got up close and personal with each other under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Carola Hieker, were encouraged not to “Go Back to Sleep” by Rob van Rijswijk, Elke Moebius and Stefan Eckert and left the venue reinvigorated by the concept of “Schoonheid” as explored by Daan Roosegaarde.
The Solutions Tables sparked robust debate and the gathering got to hear the recommendations from these discussions the next morning at breakfast.
The programme, through Thursday and Friday was compelling and the critical issue of sustainability was explored at length. Jörg Zeissig, David O Connor, David De Dios, Kai Hattendorf, Marieke van Eijndhoven, Edwin van der Vennet, Pauline Teyssedre, Beatrice Eastham, Clemens Arnold and Sarah Chew explored the
sustainability options available to the Exhibitions and Events industry and mapped out a path to take IFES forward on its journey to reaching Net Zero Carbon Events in the near future.

Of course, it was not all business and IFES members mingled over Dutch beer and peanuts at The Bierfabriek, dressed to impress for the Gala Dinner and embraced the spirit of the 80’s in full regalia at the Summit Party.

On Saturday, members were able to explore the picturesque
city of Amsterdam from the decks of a barge gliding down the canals.
While the World Summit celebrated the green shoots of recovery in the exhibitions industry and resuming business took centre stage; for many, the opportunity to network, reconnect and re-establish the relationships that make the IFES network such a formidable force, was the highlight of the event.

Summit takeaways:
1. Sustainability as an industry imperative.
2. Move forward by combining the talent of the younger generation with the experience of our veterans.

3. Focus on increasing membership and showcasing the attraction of the industry.
