She would have had difficulty feeding, We recorded useless “welfare checks” by workers. Dead, lame, deformed, injured and dying birds on shed floors, and chicks being thrown, kicked, and trod on. One baby was left eight hours to die. Neck-breaking is deemed “humane” by the RSPCA, as long as they are checked afterwards. This didn’t happen. Workers snapped the necks of chicks on feeder lines, and threw convulsing birds onto the floor or into a bucket of human urine.

‘Enrichment’ was old plastic bottles hanging on feeder lines.

Dead bodies littered the sheds

Our cameras revealed she had been there for days. Silently suffering under a feeder.

The “product” of an industry built on profit and greed. Her legs had collapsed, feathers missing, and skin sore and inflamed.

RSPCA-certified, and ‘high welfare’ chicken farms. Our investigators followed the life of these birds - from the placing of chicks into sheds to their catching at nine-weeks old for slaughter. Scenes of chickens being caught are harrowing, with workers kicking, throwing and slamming birds into crates; and workers yelling, swearing and shouting at terrified chickens.

Animal Justice Project spent three months inside free-range chicken farms to document the reality for “slow growing” birds. We show that you can’t trust the RSPCA, Red Tractor, or supermarkets to protect animals; and that “slow growing” doesn’t necessarily mean a life free from pain and suffering.
