Chickens raised on ‘higher welfare’ farms are still subjected to rough handling, burning levels of ammonia, lack of medical care and high-density housing. ’Free-range’ does not mean a life free from pain and suffering.

BRED TO SUFFER

Even ‘slow growing’ chickens experience lameness, heart problems, leg deformities and skin burns. Unable to stand to reach their feeders, chickens often die slowly from dehydration and exhaustion. Injured and suffering birds are afforded no medical care.

A LIFE CUT SHORT

Chickens on ‘higher welfare’ farms are typically slaughtered from just nine weeks of age. This is a mere 21 days longer than the industry standard of 42 days for intensively-reared birds.

Naturally, chickens can live up to 12 years.
