Animal Justice Project has investigated the never-filmed-before cruel slaughter of male dairy calves. From the dairy farm, to a dealer’s yard, to the slaughterhouse. This is the first ever exposé of slaughter calves in the UK.

In 2020, 65,000 male calves under one month old, were killed in slaughterhouses. This is more than the latest numbers of calves shot on farms — 60,000.

Oaklands left tiny calves, as young as nine days old, in a wet and draughty lairage pen overnight during winter, unchecked by an Animal Welfare Officer. These babies will have been confused, cold, and scared.

Over half of slaughter calves come from dealers

The shooting of calves on farms has been condemned by the public. It was called dairy’s ‘dirty secret’. But now they have a new one.

Dairy companies, like Müller and Arla, as well as supermarkets, now prohibit this killing. But some policies often fail to stop calves going to market and slaughter. The fate of many male calves born on dairy farms is to enter the integrated calf rearing system, where they will be killed for their flesh...

… but thousands will still be unsuitable and unprofitable Over half of the 'slaughter calves' are bought by dealers from markets and dairies. Their flesh will be sold for human consumption and their skin for leather. We filmed calves being picked up from dairy farms supplying Sainsbury’s, via milk processor Müller, by renowned calf dealer Oaklands Livestock Centre. At Oaklands' yard, our undercover investigation revealed true horrors that calves had to face.

Could policy loopholes mean that thousands of calves are still sent to slaughter?

Violence awaited the young calves. Babies, who had their entire lives ahead of them, were stunned and then strung up by their legs before having their throats cut. This is the painful and shocking reality for thousands of slaughter calves each year.

THE SECRET IS OUT

Unweaned calves had no access to water during filming. Naturally, calves drink from their mothers throughout the day. Many went as long as 21 hours without food, flouting welfare regulations. They cried out for their mothers’ milk and paced in their pens. Some calves were fed just once in 29 hours.
