“World-Leading Research? RABBITS AND DOGS Sheffield researchers participated in a study where mesh was implanted on inflicted wounds of rabbits, who were left for up to three months with these injuries before being killed. Sheffield researchers were involved in a study based in China where over 40 young beagles (housed inside for their entire lives) were experimented on and killed. Four dogs died during the study.
DEAFENING GERBILS Gerbils are the species of choice at Sheffield for hearing research. Animals were placed in a soundproof booth and exposed to up to 110 dB of noise. 150 dB is considered enough to burst a human eardrum. Electrodes were inserted into the brain to record the results. DRILLING HOLES INTO RATS Rats had holes drilled into their leg bone and cancer cells were injected. The rats then underwent daily force-feeding to test the efficacy of a new drug on cancer pain. They were then killed.
