The School’s recent strategic planning exercise brought together a broad range of members of the Churchie community to determine our goals for the boys, staff and Old Boys for the years ahead.

Necessarily, this process involved exploring our mission as an independent school in the Anglican tradition, our long-standing four tenets and our overall vision for a great future.

Throughout the many months of deliberations, surveys and consultation, it became very clear that the time-honoured phrase, 'the making of men', stood at the forefront of our thinking and is, therefore, expressed prominently as our mission statement in Our Strategy 2018 – 2022.

An investigation of Canon Morris’ writing, notably his memoir Sons of Magnus, reveals no instance of ‘the making of men’ as a phrase, although it is very clear what Morris understood to be the vital mission of education in a churchfounded boys school. Morris wrote of the need for faith, courage and integrity. He wrote, ‘We are a church school, so chapel and parish, bible and prayers must be part of our practice and our lives. We are founded for learning, and that can only come with hard work, so slacking and shirking and cribbing must be cut right out.

We are to be strong and leaders of our nation, so hardship and pain and poverty must be courageously borne; be honourable, of course, and don’t be extravagant.’ Thus was the image of a faithful, honourable, decent and hardworking man that the Founder sought to make of every boy who attended Churchie.

Robert Cole, in naming his 1986 book about the history of Churchie, The Making of Men, firmly established the phrase when he noted the Founder saw education as a forging process, one in which ‘boys were made men’. Morris would establish a place of learning that would imbue new generations with a sense of the essence of life in the context of Christian ideals.

Today, while we view the mission through a contemporary lens, the traditional values remain uppermost. We seek for our boys to grow as men of character and service. We wish for them to be honest, forthright and wise. We ask them to serve others with generous hearts and to bring their gifts and talents to bear for the benefit of others. We expect them to have open minds to questions of faith and would hope that, ultimately, they might choose to develop in their relationships with God. We seek for our boys to become leaders as well as to serve, to be scholarly and open to the hard work of truly learning, and to be relentless in their pursuit of knowledge and truth. We wish for them to grow in breadth and depth by pursuing their great passions in the arts, sport, languages and cultural endeavours, and to acknowledge and celebrate these gifts in others.

We want them to always build others up, rather than to diminish, and be an endless source of goodwill and encouragement in a world that will benefit greatly from such optimism.

It is these things that occupy our minds today when we accept as our mission, the making of men. It is our intent that our boys will be imbued with this mission and that it may sustain them throughout their lives and destinations.

You will find numerous examples in the following pages of this edition of Eagles’ Wings that demonstrate how we are pursuing our mission and how it permeates all that we do in this school.

Deputy Headmaster

Academic

Churchie welcomed Richard Wheeldon as our new Deputy Headmaster Academic this year.

Richard is an accomplished educator, with experience in academic and pastoral leadership roles at Newington College (Sydney), Shore School (Sydney) and St Dunstan’s College (London).

Originally from the UK, and then raised in Melbourne, Richard holds a Master of Arts in Literature, a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Music (Hons) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Melbourne. He has been an HSC Marker for Advanced and Extension English and offers significant experience in leading, teaching and assessing subjects in the IB Diploma Programme.

Richard is looking forward to meeting the Churchie community and continuing to grow the School’s academic programmes.

‘I am enormously impressed by Churchie’s commitment to offering a strong liberal education, by its recent introduction of the IB as an excellent complement to the rollout of the new QCE, making sure that the learning interests and propensities of all students are catered for in a supportive, nurturing and challenging environment.

‘I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to contribute my own best work to Churchie’s journey, and to be inspired, challenged and motivated by lots of different people along the way,’ Richard said.

‘Schools are big and complex organisations, but one of the reasons I like them so much is that they all seem to be about a single goal: the enrichment of students, both individually and collectively.

'The way that communities often come together to support this goal is extraordinary.

I’m looking forward to meeting everybody and learning about the different experiences, views and hopes that people have.’

Richard’s interests include golf, tennis, cycling, swimming and reading. Also, as a former singer with Opera Australia, he has a particular interest in music. We warmly welcome Richard, his wife Haline, daughter Amelia and son James to Churchie and wish them all the best as they settle in to the Churchie community and explore Brisbane.

Dean of International Baccalaureate

Teacher Researcher and Mentor

Building on her experience at Churchie as an English teacher and former director of debating, Catherine Wells commenced as Dean of International Baccalaureate from Term 3.

Already well known to the Churchie community as Head of Art, Vicky Leighton has commenced an exciting, newly created role that will have wide-reaching impacts.

As an educator, Catherine was drawn to the IB after undertaking professional development during the School’s comprehensive IB preparations.

The position of Teacher Researcher and Mentor is a unique role that represents the School’s commitment to educational research and teacher professional development. Sitting within the Churchie Research Centre and working with Dr Terry Byers, Vicky will be supporting teachers in their continual professional learning and development while also translating current research theory to evidence-based practice.

‘The Diploma Programme looks at the whole educational experience and aims to encourage students to be lifelong learners who are actively involved in the world around them. I think the assessment is well designed, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of teaching IB courses,’ Catherine said.

This role will allow Catherine to further her professional interest in the IB landscape, as she will oversee the growing IB community in the Senior School since the Diploma Programme was introduced in 2018.

'I am looking forward to being able to work closely with some of the key stakeholders in the programme—students, teachers and parents,’ Catherine said.

As current recipient of the Harrop Teaching Fellowship, Catherine will also bring valuable research experience to the role. The fellowship has allowed her to study a collaborative teaching style called The Harkness Method, which Catherine is looking to implement in her courses and share with colleagues.

‘Collaboration is a key learning aspect of the IB. My work in this area will assist collaboration in my classroom, as well as my wider work with IB students in preparing for external examinations,’ Catherine said.

‘Churchie has a strong, active culture of learning and development, and I will build on this to establish a framework of best research practice and dissemination from which all teachers may benefit. I will encourage and coordinate research-led practice, identify and mentor teacher development, build university and industry partnerships, and be involved with research projects within the School,’ Vicky said.

Vicky’s background as a researcher, from her Masters degree to her Churchie Teaching Fellowship current PhD programme, will provide an inspiring and experienced influence on Churchie’s teachers who are looking to further their practice.

‘It is my job to help create an environment that empowers teachers and boys to be intellectually curious and lifelong learners. This is a role that has, at its core, a desire for this community to grow and thrive as co-creators of knowledge. This new role is an exciting initiative, and I really can’t ask for more than that in my teaching career,’ Vicky said.

From Churchie to Georgetown

Ordination journey

Alex Chan (2018) has accepted an offer to study at Georgetown University in Washington DC, commencing an undergraduate degree at the McDonough School of Business in August.

Churchie congratulates Old Boy The Reverend Alastair Crouch (2005) on his ordination as a deacon in March this year. The ceremony was held at St David’s Cathedral in Hobart by The Right Reverend Dr Richard Condie. Alastair is currently serving as assistant minister at Burnie Anglican Church in Tasmania.

Alex applied to study at Georgetown because the university is renowned for its International Relations programme and has many successful politicians among its alumni.

‘I’m really looking forward to exploring how international business works,’ Alex said. ‘Georgetown will present me with many different career options, including business, investment banking and law.’

Alex completed his senior years as a boarder in Goodwin House at Churchie. ‘I had a strong academic background when I first arrived at Churchie from China, but it wasn’t enough to get me into the top universities. The additional co-curricular and service activities at Churchie gave me the balance I needed to make a successful application,’ Alex said.

During his time at Churchie, Alex participated in many co-curricular areas, including music, football and rugby, and was very involved in community service. Alex developed a soccer charity foundation that aims to provide better access to soccer facilities for rural children. He raised $10,000 to build a soccer field and $18,000 to start a charity tournament that brings rural children to the city to compete.

While God and the Christian faith have been constants in his life from a young age, Alastair recalls his journey into ministry began to take shape during his time at Churchie.

‘Through the ministry of Ian Loom and attending the ICSF group ‘wings’, I realised that faith needed to be more than an intellectual exercise. I was challenged to put my faith in action and I’m forever grateful for this challenge. It is this realisation that gave me direction, purpose, and began my path to ordination,’ Alastair said.

After Churchie, Alastair sought to gain life experience before seeking ordination. He studied chemical engineering and worked in an alumina refinery in Western Australia for five years before relocating his family to Sydney to study at Sydney Missionary and Bible College.

‘It was there that God further shaped and developed my knowledge, understanding and love for him. He opened the door to ordination in the Anglican Diocese of Tasmania and to ministry in Burnie where I now serve,’ Alastair said.

After being ordained as a deacon this year, Alastair plans to continue walking this path and look to ordination to the priesthood in the next couple of years.

In 2019 the churchie emerging art prize was proud to announce Churchie Old Boy Sam Cranstoun (2004) as the newly appointed Patron of ‘the churchie’ 2019. As a former finalist of ‘the churchie’, Sam is looking forward to supporting new artists in this role.

A highlight of the Churchie Service calendar is World’s Greatest Shave. This fundraising event for the Leukaemia Foundation is supported by many Churchie students, who garner the support of families, friends, neighbours and businesses to assist this wonderful charity.

‘I have keenly followed 'the churchie' and watched as past finalists have gone on to grow and refine their careers and exhibit on a national stage. I look forward to taking on a more active role in supporting this new generation of artists as Patron of 'the churchie',’ Sam said.

Also this year, ‘the churchie’ will have a new home via a partnership with the Institute of Modern Art (IMA). This will give Australia’s emerging visual artists the opportunity to exhibit at an internationally renowned gallery that is committed to contemporary arts practice, experimentation and cultural diversity. ‘the churchie’ attracts over 900 individual artworks consisting of all visual art forms, from drawing and painting to performance and conceptual works. The finalists’ exhibition will be held at the IMA, located at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Fortitude Valley, from 10 to 21 September 2019. ‘the churchie’ offers a total prize pool of $25,000, with the overall winner receiving a non-acquisitive $15,000 cash prize donated by long-term sponsor BSPN Architecture. Over several weeks, the boys source sponsorship with campaigns that reach well into the thousands of dollars. With so many participants this year, the hair shaving took place over two festive lunch-time events in March.

Churchie is a well-recognised contributor to World’s Greatest Shave, illustrated in the picture above where the boys are holding their awards Churchie received from the campaign last year. This year, the boys collectively raised $50,000.

Churchie’s Director of Service John Collins said, ‘This is an amazing effort by the boys, their families and friends. This contribution enables the Leukaemia Foundation to further its research into curing blood cancers and supporting families in need.’

Notable fundraising efforts this year included $2282 from Josh MacKenzie and $2575 from Patrick Trimboli. The stand-out fundraiser was Tom Servin, who raised $12,800. Tom is a Churchie boarder from Gainsford (near Rockhampton), and he also topped the fundraising list in 2018 with $5000. Congratulations to Tom and the many Churchie young men for their community service efforts.

experiences

Having the opportunity to travel abroad to learn, experience and help others is an essential part of a Churchie education.

In the recent school holiday period, four Senior School groups travelled to Africa, Asia and Europe. Our science students completed wildlife conservation research in Malawi, music students performed on the world stage in China, Navy Cadets completed exhibitions in Scandinavia and service students contributed to the education of children in Cambodia.

Planning for

sporting success Churchie has a long, proud and successful tradition of sporting excellence. Sport shapes our year as we make our way through the GPS seasons, bringing our community together, whether celebrating success or pulling together to overcome adversity on the field, court, gymnasium or hall.

To build on this heritage, a review of our sports programmes was undertaken as a component of the latest school strategic plan. The result is Our Sports Plan, a strategy to achieve unity across the sports programmes and to define and nurture successful performance. Further, the sports plan supports the enduring value that sports provide all students as part of their holistic education.

Since its founding, Churchie has sought to develop the whole person—physically, spiritually and mentally. This dimension of Churchie is also embedded in our founding tenets, where we require our students, teachers and parents to pursue and support a balance across academic excellence, personal growth, spiritual awareness and service.

The tenet of personal growth is of particular relevance to our sporting programmes.

Personal growth at Churchie is fostered in the life of every young man by providing a comprehensive range of challenges and activities where he can develop character, build resilience and experience leadership.

Co-curricular activities, which include sport and the arts, foster lifelong skills and passions that are essential to a holistic education.

Given the strong link between our co-curricular programmes and personal growth, the sport review examined our sporting programmes, in conjunction with the current GPS landscape,

with a view of assessing and addressing how best to develop a united sports strategy for improved performance. This relates to the individual performance of boys in their activities, the group performance of teams in their divisions and also the broad performance of our programmes to provide relevant, meaningful, competitive, enjoyable and safe environments.

For Churchie to continue to be a leading school in the GPS environment, all programmes need to be unified in their delivery to achieve the best possible outcomes for all students involved.

While each programme differs in many aspects, to cultivate and develop successful sporting programmes, four core provisions were deemed paramount in the management of each sport: player development, programme resources, programme management and competition.

Player development encompasses the physical and mental component of sport and students at Churchie, whether at the elite or development level. Students will have the opportunity to improve their skills at all ability and age levels.

Programme resources, which include equipment, facilities and coaches, will provide the best instruction and game day experiences available, developing pathways for elite and external representation through a network of sporting associations.

Through a cohesive programme management approach, which further integrates the Prep and Senior Schools, we will maximise the learning experience for all students, beginning at a younger age (for example, from Reception).

Through our dedication to providing competition opportunities, we will continue to meet, where possible, the growing demand for our popular sports. This includes a commitment to provide meaningful experiences and engagement for all ability levels of students, both within and beyond the GPS competition.

This year has already seen examples of our successful sporting programmes. Our First XI made sporting history when they secured the GPS Football premiership, our junior team took out the GPS Junior Cross Country Premiership and our rowers won the Old Boys' Cup at the Churchie regatta. I would like to conclude by noting that these latter two achievements in cross country and rowing were the result of collective efforts across all ages. Along with sports such as basketball, volleyball and chess, they are illustrations of healthy sporting programmes defined by outstanding student engagement, excellent coaching, supportive communities and leading facilities. The future is certainly bright for our cherished sporting heritage.

the making Captain of Football and First XI Lachlan Smith

Churchie celebrated its first-ever GPS Football premiership this year, the culmination of many years developing a vigorous and competitive programme.

Even though the final round of GPS Football was held on the student-free day at the end of Term 2, a large contingent of Churchie supporters turned up in their blue and grey to witness a historic event.

Churchie introduced football in 1972, entering four teams in the Junior Brisbane Soccer Association. Football became a GPS sport in 1991; Churchie's GPS premiership was 29 years in the making.

Football at Churchie has grown significantly in recent years, with boys across the Prep and Senior Schools involved. In 2019, Churchie had its best-performing season since GPS Football commenced, setting new school records in four of the eight rounds played and, on aggregate, our highest points total, wins and goals scored.

‘The level of football in the GPS competition continues to get higher and higher, and this year has been extremely competitive,’ Director of Football Derek Lennon said.

‘Dreams apparently do come true, not because of luck or chance, but the culmination of hard work, dedication to the Churchie badge and passion,’ Lachlan said.

‘The premiership win has been a long time coming, and we are very proud of the achievement of the playing group and coaching staff. I recognise and thank the thousands of boys who have represented the School over the years I have been here, and also throughout the years before.’

‘I thank every single boy in the squad, whether you played no minutes or 80 minutes each week, for demonstrating everything we are about as a team. You all deserve to be part of this amazing achievement.’

Reflecting on his team’s success, Captain of Football and First XI Captain Lachlan Smith said he had always dreamed of being part of a team that creates history.

We congratulate all boys, staff and parents of Churchie Football for their combined and sustained efforts that led to this historic achievement.

Cross Country champions Churchie’s Years 5 to 7 GPS Cross Country team did the School proud and secured the GPS Junior Cross Country Premiership in May. The boys were dedicated in their preparations, beginning in February with twice-weekly training sessions followed by four pre-meets leading up to the championships.

Prep Cross Country Captain Jackson Eijsvogel spoke about the team’s training and success at a Prep Assembly towards the end of Term 2.

‘Running, especially cross country, is a challenging sport, needing not only physical toughness but also mental strength. The boys trained their hearts out, pushing themselves with hard sessions, including half-chapel runs and—the boys’ least favourite—Mowbray Terrace hill runs,’ Jackson said.

The effort across the team was evident on the day. While there were no first places, each age group secured a top-three finish, a true collective effort resulting in the junior premiership.

Celebrations were also in order at the GPS senior event, with Year 12 athlete Ky Robinson (pictured) winning the open age group event in record time. His time of 18:12.9 for the 6 km race at Limestone Park was a course record: 37 seconds faster than the previous record.

It was held by Churchie Old Boy Jack Bruce from 2012 and only the second time under 19 minutes at Limestone Park since the Open GPS Championships became 6 km in 2000.

Director of Cross Country Michael Simes commended the team on their hard work this season.

‘GPS Cross Country is a very high level of competition and the success of these boys is the result of great dedication and commitment to training over a long period of time. Well done to all boys who participated in cross country this year—their attitude and effort was outstanding,’ Michael said.

CHURCHIE SPORT

True team effort Churchie’s 2019 rowing season saw a collective, sustained team effort that secured the Old Boys’ Cup at Head of the River for the first time since 2006.

Given that the Old Boy’s Cup is awarded to the school that accumulates the most points at Head of the River across 12 racing divisions, this success recognises the efforts of all 223 students in the Churchie Rowing programme.

‘There is a strong camaraderie among the boys in rowing, and we have developed a culture of inclusion and accountability. Across all 36 crews, I saw dedication and focus during both training and competition,’ Director of Rowing John Callie said.

Rowing is a popular sport at Churchie, despite the challenges presented by early morning training and travel for regattas.

To ensure boys can balance rowing and other school commitments, training sessions focus on being highly efficient without compromising on performance.

‘The time demand of rowing can be a major challenge to participation. However, we have developed measures to maximise the time we have at the boat shed or the gym, such as specially designed boat trailers that that can carry boats without derigging and finding ways to expediate launching and returning boats at training,’ John said.

Congratulations to all Churchie rowers whose team effort secured this historic achievement.

Effective

study strategies Most of us will need to undertake ‘study’ at some point in our lives. Most of us will be familiar with the various techniques, such as re-reading, highlighting and cramming.

However, how effective are these techniques, and are there better strategies students can learn?

A partnership between the Churchie Research Centre and UQ’s Science for Learning Research Centre is placing ‘study’ under the microscope. The project is examining the study skills of secondary school students to better understand strategies they employ and then equip them with effective study skills for high school, university and beyond.

The current literature in the fields of cognitive and educational psychology is focused on university students. The research shows that university students prefer and rely on study strategies that are considered low-utility when preparing for exams. These include highlighting, re-reading, summarising materials and cramming. Where do students learn these skills and why do they consider them useful?

These questions are critically important, given the assessment shifts in the new Queensland Certificate of Education and in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

School-based assessment and curriculum examines student understanding through a combination of assignment, projects and term-based exams. Their short-term nature supports, even reinforces, students using low-utility strategies and cramming for exams.

Cramming (or blocked/mass practice) is widely acknowledged as a deficit approach that works against the creation of enduring understanding in one’s long-term memory and ability to be knowledgeable, think creatively and solve problems – the hallmarks of lifelong learners. It is imperative for schools to create an environment that supports our students to be learners.

To be better learners, students require a more informed understanding of the nuances of different learning and study behaviours and strategies. They also need to understand how different behaviours and strategies aid or hinder the construction of deep understanding. They also need to know which behaviour or strategy to apply and when to apply it.

The Making Effective Learning Strategies Stick project will investigate how to best teach students in the use, and retention, of proven study strategies, collaboration structures and thinking routines. It aims to develop student understanding of the underlying cognitive processes (dual coding, interleaving, interrogative elaboration, retrieval practice and spaced practice) and to improve their self-regulation (focus and metacognition) in learning, now and into their post-schooling future.

At the same time, the project will illuminate what motivates students to persist with and translate these strategies into daily practice, and not revert to previous low-utility approaches. The project has devised a toolkit comprising six effective study strategies.

Their design bridges the latest empirical research from the cognitive sciences, neuroscience and psychology with the nuances of a secondary schooling context.

Each applies the cognitive behaviours and processes, but are adapted to be used

by Years 7 to 12 students in all subject disciplines.

As we continue to better understand the study behaviours of teenage students, while building their self-awareness and equipping them with more efficient strategies, we hope to empower better lifelong learning in Churchie boys, as well as all students, through this research.

Inspiring

young minds An exciting new building project in the Prep School will herald a new era of learning facilities.

Nestled next to School House, this two-storey building will provide innovative creative spaces for specialist learning and a new precinctapproach to year-group classrooms.

With the expansion of the Preparatory School in recent years, the need for additional classrooms and specialist teaching rooms has emerged. On the ground floor of the new building will be classrooms for visual art to centralise the teaching of this area in the Prep School.

Alongside the new art rooms will be an exciting new concept: a maker space.

This multipurpose learning area will have a range of technologies and tools for student exploration and practical activities, such as science and robotics.

Head of Preparatory School Michael Dunn explains, ‘Boys engage in their learning really well when they are actively involved and when they interact with concepts in a real-world, practical way. The maker space will provide facilities to enable these practical interactions.

The boys will love and respond to that.’

‘This new space will significantly enhance the learning opportunities for our inquiring, creative and imaginative Prep School thinkers,’ Michael said.

Given the Prep School’s successful adoption of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme in 2017, the new creative precinct and specialist area has been designed to foster the attributes of an IB learner.

‘This building is a provocation for inquiry.

It will inspire our boys to try new things with their learning, be inquisitive about the world and develop their knowledge and skills in a creative and collaborative way.

The development of the attributes of the IB learner profile will certainly be enhanced by the opportunities this new building will provide,’ Michael said.

On the second floor will be three Year 3 classrooms, with a connecting bridge walkway to the existing early-childhood classrooms located in School House.

The classrooms will open out to a large break-out space for collaboration, project work and learning as a cohort.

‘By grouping classrooms around a learning plaza, we are moving toward the concept of a cohort precinct, which we will look to apply across the Prep School in the near future. In this regard, the Year 3 area is a keystone development, heralding an exciting new design approach that will eventually benefit all children,’ Michael said.

tradition It’s the race that stops the Prep School and an event that brings families together.

The Prep School’s Billy Cart Grand Prix is a not-to-be-missed annual tradition that involves boys working with each other and their parents, to design and build a billy cart that is safe, fast and looks fantastic.

The annual Prep School Billy Cart Grand Prix is a fixture of the Churchie calendar.

Working in teams of three, students race down Oaklands Parade, competing for the glory of fastest cart, most creative cart or the best-themed race team. There is no doubt this is a most exciting and colourful event.

In 2019, the 33rd annual grand prix involved 300 students competing across 51 races, with support teams and extended families cheering on from the sidelines. There is also a very important community service element to the event, which sees participants and spectators contributing to fundraising efforts for a variety of charities.

Churchie’s first billy cart race was in 1986, and the race track was the driveway adjacent to the Campbell Centre. The track was later moved to Maurice Herring Drive, winding down from the Chapel to The Flat. The carts were typically made from secondhand materials, often salvaged from old prams, trolleys and fruit cases. Brakes were primitive and steering was controlled with a rope to the front wheels.

Today the race track is Oaklands Parade, a straight and gentle-sloping track where success depends significantly on efficient cart design and an explosive start provided by two boys pushing to achieve maximum speed in just a few metres.

Churchie’s Deputy Head of Preparatory School Gavin Darwin has seen many billy cart race days, initially as the start line announcer from 2005 before taking on the event organiser role from 2010. One of the highlights is the community aspect of the grand prix.

‘This is a wonderful event that brings the Prep School together, one that is always fondly remembered by Old Boys. I am filled with pride to witness every staff member work to produce an outstanding and unique event with every boy and his family involved either as a racer or supporter,’ Gavin said.

Beyond the racing is another important dimension. The event is a fundraiser for Churchie's broader community service efforts. Nomination fees, stalls on the day and proceeds from a billy cart silent auction

contribute to ongoing community service initiatives, the recipients of which include Aussie Helpers, Act for Kids, The Smith Family, Hummingbird House, CanTeen, Mater Little Miracles and World Vision.

Another important part of the Billy Cart Grand Prix is the educational and social benefits gained in the planning and building of carts. Boys need to work as a team to design and build a cart. Typically, the whole family gets involved.

‘The key challenge is to encourage boys and families to collaboratively build a cart, working together on a concept and the build.

While billy carts have changed so much over the years, becoming faster and utilising hightech materials, we place a great emphasis on keeping true to a home-made style of cart, with families working together,’ Gavin said.

We hope to see many more Billy Cart Grand Prix events in the future. It is a proud tradition that brings together friends, family and community for a fun day, all while providing a practical learning experience with a community service outcome.

Building experience One family who has wholeheartedly embraced the opportunity to make a home-made cart is the Johnston family.

Year 6 student Jack Johnston, having competing in three GPs, reflects, ‘The Billy Cart Grand Prix has been a great experience. We made a new billy cart with a different design each year, all in our garage. Dad made an instruction booklet that our team had to follow.

I learned about different tools and how to use them correctly.’

Jack’s dad Mike saw an opportunity to create a practical challenge for the boys.

‘ We wanted it to be a hands-on experience that stayed true to the intent of the grand prix.

‘It was a good opportunity for the boys to try woodwork and mechanical tools and techniques that are not as common for students to learn these days,’ Mike said.

After the boys came up with a theme, Mike found a design online and sourced the raw materials such as cables, nuts and bolts, and wood. After creating instructions for the boys, he handed it over to Jack and his two teammates to put together.

‘All the families came over and the boys followed the instructions to build the cart. We only stepped in if they really needed assistance. Once built and tested, serious practice commenced.

It was great to see the boys taking on something new—out of their comfort zone—and seeing the end result,’ Mike said.

A labyrinth is an ancient symbol found in many cultures that can be drawn on walls and objects or marked on the ground to be walked on. While many people confuse labyrinths with mazes, the difference is that mazes are designed to confuse, whereas labyrinths generally have one winding path to the centre and then back out again. A maze tries to make you lose your way. A labyrinth helps you find your way.

Early Christians adopted the labyrinth for meditative use in their churches. The oldest continually walked Christian labyrinth was set in the floor of the Chartres Cathedral in France in the 13th century.

In Brisbane, a group of Anglicans (clergy and lay) has formed, under the patronage of Bishop Jeremy, to help facilitate labyrinth practice.

The SEQ Diocesan Anglican Labyrinth Resource Group (ALRG) visited Churchie in June to share the joy of labyrinth prayer.

Jandal and Susan Dennings from the ALRG worked with Year 4 students and Chaplain Stephanie to create a giant labyrinth walk in the Campbell Centre using fabric and lanterns.

The boys learned about labyrinth history and the prayer walks from places around the world.

For one of the labyrinth walks, participants broke up their walk into three sections.

On entering the labyrinth, boys quietly asked God to help them be a better neighbour.

While in the centre, they brought to mind a person to whom they could be a better neighbour. On the way out, boys asked God to show them the path ahead to becoming better friends and neighbours. Another of the walks required one boy to lead up to two others wearing blindfolds.

The boys enjoyed the experience and engaged well with the process. Thank you to the ALRG for bringing labyrinth walks to Churchie.

When they reach the age of 70, Churchie Old Boys earn the honourary title of a Vintage Viking. The 2019 Vintage Vikings Morning Tea and Lunch was held in Morris Hall on Friday 24 May.

With a total of 129 in attendance it was a truly memorable occasion. Churchie's premiere jazz ensemble Big Band 1 performed splendidly, featuring vocal guest performances from Director of Music Jeffrey Black (1979) and Year 11 student Harry Shaw.

A highlight of this annual event is the acknowledgement of the oldest Old Boy in attendance. This year, at 95 years of age, Tony Osborn (1942) was the proud recipient. Tradition sees the oldest Old Boy

ceremonially crowned with a Viking helmet.

This year, the OBA Committee commissioned sculptor Dr Rhyl Hinwood AM to design a special leather helmet, modelled on the St Magnus statue in Magnus Quad.

Rhyl is a past parent of Churchie and was the sculptor of the St Magnus statue and the Canon Morris statue. The helmet also features leather work by Len Bytheway.

We congratulate Tony for being the first Old Boy to wear this new helmet and look forward to continuing this wonderful tradition.

For learning and prayer; for laughter and play; for idling and dreams; for chapel and cricket; for soldiering and the river; for science and Latin; for swimming and libraries; for the confidence of friendship; for the approach of beauty in art and literature; for health and happiness and the growth of a boy into true manhood.'

To be a Churchie boy means having one of the best appointed and most beautiful campuses in Australia. It means having committed teachers who see their role as a true vocation and seek us out, to be part of the best, so boys can reach their full potential academically. It is being able to participate in the widest range of co-curricular activities, from cadets to violin, rowing and rocketry. It means learning about and offering service in our community.

The Churchie Foundation exists to safeguard the School and see that it endures and that its goals are met. The Foundation strives to ensure we stay at the forefront of world-class education for our sons and our grandsons. The physical school as we see it, and a large part of our scholarships, derive from the generosity of benefactors, and this will be the case into the future. The first initiative is a new creative arts and Year 3 building in the Prep School, which will emerge next year to grow our young boys’ minds and make their ideas come to life.

We will be calling on our community to join us in assisting with the funding of this incredible building for our youngest minds.

We are close to rolling out the School’s firstever bequest gifts and will programme, called The 1912 Society. There will be an inaugural lunch to recognise our members. Having Churchie in your will is the gift a person can give which will make a difference and be long recognised.

The Foundation was proud to take its July board meeting to the outback. We travelled to Longreach for a meeting on 25 July, which was followed by a community event in the Qantas Founders Museum. Boarding and Churchie go hand in hand. It’s what our school was built on, and our boarding presence has been an essential part of Churchie’s culture from the beginning.

The Foundation also welcomes our newest Director Dr Steven Ting. Steven was Churchie’s school captain in 1994. He and his wife Anne have two boys, Jacob, in Year 1, and Isaac, who will be joining Churchie next year. Steven has been a big part of our community for many years now, and we look forward to having his voice and his Prep School perspective at our meetings.

Churchie has been very fortunate to receive many generous gifts and bequests over its long history. One of the earliest bequests was from John Darnell in 1930, for the construction of a library.

Churchie Old Boy Henry Harland (2015) was the 2018 recipient of a Churchie Foundation Overseas Study Scholarship. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has penned some highlights of his experience:

Many other bequests have enabled the School to respond to the increasing enrolment demand over the years, to ensure our students had access to the best educational facilities. These include bequest or gifts from Old Boys whose names are well known in our community today: L V Mervyn Jensen (1929), Stanley Smith (1923), Sir John Pidgeon (1943), Graham Fowles (1941), Barry McCart (1948) and David Turbayne (1929).

The generous giving to the School by Old Boys has enabled the establishment and evolution of one of the most outstanding school campuses in Australia. The impact of bequests and generous donations has left a lasting legacy for families of future students, Old Boys and the wider Churchie community.

To continue this legacy, the Churchie Foundation is proud to announce the formation of The 1912 Society to honour and thank the many generous Churchie Old Boys who wish to leave a legacy to Churchie in their wills.

'An exchange to the US was a long-term goal for me—a college town, a place overrun by students where the culture and passion that existed at Churchie may live on. The University of WisconsinMadison did not disappoint.

'While my classes were challenging, thankfully I shared several classes with the two Australians I was staying with. My US university was a very different experience to Australia. For me, it felt more like high school, with homework given out and checked, as well as near mandatory attendance in most classes.

'During my time in the US I also visited Chicago, New Orleans and Nashville, and experienced an authentic American Thanksgiving at a mate´s place in New Jersey.

'Living out of home for the first time was also a great experience.

Although we made it through the entire semester without a vacuum cleaner, mugs or a kettle, I´d say we did pretty well for ourselves and managed to keep the place in a decent state.

'I met so many good mates during my time in Madison, friends who hopefully I can convince to make the trek to Australia and show around here.'

of School Council Daniel O’Connor OAM. The OBA has been approached by a group of Old Boys who are looking to provide resources and assistance to fellow Old Boys seeking help with mental health issues.

We are keen to support and provide resources to this project, which includes the suggestion that alumni associations of the GPS schools collaborate on joint projects, such as the mental health initiative.

The OBA Annual Dinner is on Friday 16 August, followed by the annual Old Boys’ Day on Saturday 17 August. The Annual Dinner is at Howard Smith Wharves and numbers are looking very impressive. Our guest speaker is Old Boy Tim Walsh (1996), who is currently Head Coach of the Australian Men’s Rugby Sevens and was previously Head Coach of the gold-medal-winning Australian Women’s Rugby Sevens at the 2016 Olympics. Old Boys’ Day coincides with home games of the GPS Rugby and Basketball rounds against Gregory Terrace. The OBA will provide a barbecue in the afternoon and all Old Boys are invited to reconvene at the Pineapple Hotel to watch the Wallabies take on the All Blacks in the Bledisloe Cup match that evening.

Finally, during my term as OBA President to date, I’ve enjoyed many opportunities to meet with Old Boys from all eras. It is important to recognise what many Old Boys have and can continue to give to this association and the Churchie community in general. I look forward to meeting many more of you.

IN MEMORIAM

Brian Halligan (1941) Brian Halligan was born in Brisbane in 1924 and attended Churchie from 1938 to 1940. He had fond memories of the School and formed numerous lifelong friendships. Brian enjoyed sport, making the Second XI Cricket and the Second IV Tennis. He was also a strong cross country runner.

Brian enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in November 1942 and served as a tail gunner in a Wellington bomber, which was shot down near Budapest. In 1944, when returning from a bombing raid north of Vienna, Brian’s plane was again hit, wounding Brian. He landed in a field around 65 kilometres west of Vienna before being treated by farmers who took him to the Gestapo. After recuperating in hospital, he spent the rest of the war in a prisoner-of-war camp. On 22 April 1945, the camp was liberated by the Russian army and, by 11 May 1945, he was back in the UK ready to head home.

Upon returning to Brisbane, Brian studied to become a solicitor and co-founded law firm Walsh Halligan Douglas. Brian practiced law for more than 60 years, eventually retiring at the age of 82.

In 1956 Brian married his wife Jacqueline and had three sons. He joined the Tattersall’s Club in 1954 and, later, the Brisbane Club. During his spare time he enjoyed playing golf and was awarded an honorary life membership of the Queensland Golf Club.

Desmond Lloyd Sturgess McDermott (1947) (1957) Criminal barrister Desmond Gordon Sturgess QC died on 8 March 2019.

Desmond was raised at Southport on the Gold Coast and in rural Queensland (Longreach and Monto). He attended Churchie from 1944 to 1947.

After finishing school Desmond studied law and was admitted to the Bar in 1952.

He began his career in Papua New Guinea in 1953. In 1982 he resigned from the Bar Association of Queensland and was appointed Queensland's inaugural Director of Public Prosecutions in 1985, a role he held for five years, before retiring at the age of 60 in 1990. In 1998, he returned to public life, albeit briefly, as Chairman of the Queensland Community Corrections Board.

To reflect Desmond’s achievements in law, The IM Williamson Memorial Bursary was endowed with a bequest made in the will of Desmond’s aunt, the late Ivy May Williamson, and is awarded annually to a Year 12 student who is proceeding to study law.

Lloyd McDermott was born in 1939 in Eidsvold, a small town in central Queensland. In 1954 Lloyd commenced Year 9 at Churchie as a boarder in Gerald House. After completing his first year he was awarded a scholarship for his academic and sporting achievements. Lloyd played First XI Cricket in 1956 and 1957 and First XV Rugby in 1955, 1956 and 1957. He was also the under 16 champion in track and field in 1955.

Continuing his love of rugby, Lloyd made his debut for Queensland against Fiji in 1961 and later debuted for Australia against the New Zealand All Blacks in 1962, making him one of the first Indigenous Wallabies. In 1963 he made a notable stand against apartheid in South Africa by making himself unavailable for the national tour. With a mission to increase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in rugby union, Lloyd, along with a group of rugby enthusiasts, including Gary Ella, went on to establish the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team.

After graduating from law in the early 1960s, Lloyd commenced work in the Commonwealth Deputy Crown Solicitor’s Office. In 1972 he was admitted to the Bar and, in doing so, became Australia’s first Indigenous barrister.

Lloyd was a proud Mununjali and Waka Waka man and was known to his friends and colleagues by his tribal name, Mullenjaiwakka.

The legal community recognised him by naming the Mullenjaiwakka Trust for Indigenous Legal Students in his honour. In 2016, Lloyd was a recipient of the Queensland Greats Awards.

Lloyd passed away on 6 April 2019 aged 79.
