What is Plants Nouveau and What Do We Do? Plants Nouveau is a new plant introduction and marketing company. We do not sell plants. Think of us a Breeder’s Agents, just like the people who work with artists and musicians. Plant breeders need agents too. We help bring their plants to market by navigating the introduction process, helping them to protect their invention with patents and trademarks, marketing the product for them and making sure the people who sell the products pay a royalty for every product they sell. The breeders and Plants Nouveau then use the royalty income to make and introduce even more new plants.

At Plants Nouveau, we think of ourselves as architects for better gardens, better minds and a better world. We introduce fantastic NEW plants from around the world that help people get out and play in their gardens. Our plants are bred to make gardening more colorful, less complicated and more enjoyable.
We find the plants. We bring the plants to our growers. We do extensive trials and evaluations all over the world. We patent the plant to protect the inventor — just like any other invention. We develop creative, on-trend marketing materials. Plants are sold by growers. We engage consumers to create demand for the growers.
It’s our job to select and market the new plants to the growers. We leave the selling to those who do it best. We do our best to help you find a source for our plants because our goal is for everyone to have access and every gardener and designer to benefit from the hard work we do to select plants that are just right for today’s consumers.

Who is Plants Nouveau? We are run by two plant loving women who have been around the world in search of cool, new plants. Co-Owned by Angela Treadwell-Palmer and Linda Guy, Plants Nouveau is all about relationships and community. The breeders and growers we work with are like family. ANNUALS ALOE XHUMILIS ‘ANDHOGP’
SPINELESS HEDGEHOG™
Did someone say they saw a Hedgehog in the garden? We’ve got something even better, one without spines. An upright, urn-shaped aloe, Spineless Hedgehog blooms with spikes of coral-red flowers in spring and again in late summer. This is the perfect plant for hot, dry locations, and it makes quite an impression in the front of a border or as a container specimen, offering months of vibrant color. If it isn’t cold hardy in your region, you can bring it in doors for months of enjoyment near a sunny window. As long as you don’t over water it during the winter, it will thrive indoors and be ready to go the following spring when you can put it back outside.

‘POISON DART FROG’ Vibrant, but certainly NOT toxic, the shiny, dark-green leaves of this caladium are splotched with red and reflective in bright light, making them look waxed. While most caladiums benefit from shade, Poison Dart Frog is at its best in partial sun, opening new possibilities for use in the garden and mixed containers. A medium-sized grower with huge potential for decorating, combine with begonias, ferns and other shade loving plants for the perfect texture combination.

The lava-red, heart-shaped leaves of this sun tolerant caladium are framed with dark-green rims. Waxy, with a reflective sheen, Red-Bellied Tree Frog is saturated in vivid color. FROG’
Tie-Dyed Tree Frog is playfully colorful, and a tall grower by caladium standards. Darkgreen leaves are accented by a red mid-vein, and mottled with lime-green and yellow variegation. Small, pink and white spots pepper each leaf, making them look like splattered paint. Large, heart-shaped foliage can be very effective when planted in big sweeps.

After making multiple crosses with Borneo Giant and Odora, breeder Brian Williams came up with the perfect hybrid, exhibiting the best attributes of both parents: a faster rate of growth like Borneo with enormous, rippled leaves like Odora, and cold hardiness to zone 8! ALOCASIA ‘KUCHING

During an expedition to Borneo, Breeder Brian Williams and his fiancé Sarah visited the city of Kuching, which in the Malaysian dialect, is synonymous with “cat”. Once home, and excited to find this amazing new alocasia in Brian’s breeding lines, they remarked on how the deeply lobed leaves reminded them of “cat ears” — and decided to name it after the city they so enjoyed. A very distinct variety, with a reach of up to 4’ wide, Kuching Mask makes a striking specimen. Maturing to only 2’ tall, its dark-green, pointed leaves are accented with off-white, dramatic-looking veins. Perfect for container planting or better yet, to use as a backdrop for Caladiums and other summer annuals! Size: 2’ x 3–4’

PRINCESS’
A one of a kind tropical, Yucatan Princess will cause you to take a second look at her incredibly glossy, patent leather-like leaves held high on strong, sturdy, stems. Each leaf unfurls to reveal a calm, cool grayish-green surface and an underside the color of a tall glass of chocolate milk. A mutation of an already beautiful specimen, this dark form of Alocasia sarawakensis stands tall and powerful with bold foliage reaching to eight feet high and five feet wide. The thick chocolate stems of this powerful princess hold her leaves straight and tall all summer like an Indian headdress. Size: 8' tall by 4–5' wide

This is one hard working, sexy elephant ear. The first time we saw Black Ripple (formerly known as ‘Puckered Up’) in the trial fields, we were blown away by the number of stems and leaves, the sheen and the amazingly puckered foliage. This is one of the cutest, most attractive colocasias released in a long time. The light plays off of each pucker to make the foliage look a lot like a shiny turtle shell. The habit is rather compact, with many stems, so this one will make a lovely presentation in any retail setting in a one, two or three gallon pot. Size: 3–4' tall by 3–4'wide

COLOCASIA ‘PHARAOH’S
MASK’ PPAF
A unique variety, Pharaoh’s Mask has bright green leaves that are accentuated by bulging purple veins, creating an unusual 3D effect that is impossible to ignore. At maturity, the leaf edges curve under, showing off the purple veins even more. Strong, dark stems, the same color as the veins, support individual leaves like masquerade masks, to form tight clumps that stand 4 feet tall and are tolerant of full sun or part shade. Pharaoh’s Mask lends itself to containers, where it can be placed in various garden spaces, or in large pots — poolside, to show off its amazing attributes as well as in mass plantings and near the water’s edge — just be careful not to get its feet too wet!

With leaves being the most important ornamental trait of colocasias, the dark-black leaves of Painted Black Gecko are certain to grab your attention! 3–4’ clumps catch and reflect the light with a shimmering iridescence, offering a unique look between the black tops and the undersides of the leaves, which vary from maroon to gray in color. A moderate grower, Painted Black Gecko is easy to find a spot for, and can be used anywhere you would plant caladiums for that contrasting color only elephant ears can offer.
Plant a Gecko in your garden or in a pot for instant color and a superior tropical effect. What do Geckos and Elephant Ears have in common? They both like warm weather, and they are uniquely colored. They can also range in size from very small, to quite large. This series has it all. One of the largest plants in the Gigante Series, this new behemoth is arguably the most unique as well. Strong, purple stems form the foundation for large, green, heart-shaped leaves, which are also complimented by purple veins. Once mature, plants regularly produce tall, purple flowers with white spaths, resembling lovely, ornate candles ablaze. A one-of-a-kind plant, this is the first Colocasia we’ve seen with ornamental flowers!

‘DRAGON HEART GIGANTE’ PPAF For years, Brian Williams, the breeder of the Gigante series dreamed of a black-leaved Colocasia gigantea. GIGANTE’ PP 26152 Are you an impatient grower or gardener? This is the series for you. Gigante is Spanish for giants, and boy are they huge. These new tropical elephant ears will grow up to 8 feet tall in one growing season and the leaves on these plants can reach 2–3 feet long. Our incredibly bold, colorful selections are perfectly happy in the ground or in large containers. Make a tropical oasis anywhere you need with the Gigantes. Imperial Gigante shows off massive black leaves each one particularly ornate, accented by light green veins and stems. Robust in nature, these 3–4' long leaves are held horizontally like giant fan blades.

With a name like Maximus one might think of the colossal leaves of this taro like giant shields, giving smaller plants a safe and shady respite under its broad canopy. A mighty, upright grower, Maximus has striking, purple leaves with chartreuse veins that often reach 3–5’ long. Capable of growing 6–8’ tall in a single season, it is best to site Maximus in a protected area away from strong winds with 4–8 hours of full sun. In colder areas, large bulbs can be harvested and stored indoors in a cool, dry place for replanting the following spring. Size: 6–8’ x 5–6’

COLOCASIA ‘BIKINI-TINI’
COLOCASIA ‘MADIERA’
Bikini-tini stands above the others, literally, growing 5 to 7 feet tall, the upward-facing bluish-gray leaves form cups that show off the dark purple petioles and veins. It’s a tetraploid, so it is also strong-stemmed and thick-leaved. For a fun game when it rains, watch the cups of Bikini-tini fill with water, and then tip to pour it out! Children will love this. Part of the Tropi-cool Series, bikinitini has proven perennial, even where the soil freezes. They will please gardeners everywhere with their bold color and easy to handle sizes.
Midway in size between a caladium and an elephant ear, Madeira grows only 2 to 3 feet tall, adding depth and drama to garden compositions. It is an ideal selection for the mid border or as a foliar element in large containers, where it contrasts and complements brightly colored foliage and flowers. Another great character trait of this new selection is that unlike other black-leaved forms, Madeira will not spread and take over your garden.

COLOCASIA ‘SANGRIA’ A tropical look is easier to attain in northern climes because these tubers overwinter in gardens as cold as zone 6. Part of the Tropi-Cool Series, Sangria has proven perennial, even where the soil freezes. This new selection makes a lovely focal point, sporting vibrant pinkish red petioles, like rhubarb. A closer look reveals the bluish green tint of the leaves and the purple veins that branch throughout the blade.

KAEMPFERIA
Often referred to as “Hostas for the South” or “Peacock Gingers”, kaempferias produce decorative, colorful leaves when grown in filtered to deep shade in regions of the U.S. from the Gulf Coast to Florida and west to California. Generally appearing before the foliage, iridescent, pink to purple flowers can be a pleasant surprise as plants waken from their long slumber. Beginning in June and continuing till frost, ornate leaves form decorative mats — perfect for planting where there are limited choices under the shade of mature trees. Easy to grow as long as they are well drained in winter, kaempferias make lovely groundcovers in small areas and thrive in extreme heat. #madeforshade BRUNNERA MACROPHYLLA ‘SEA HEART’ PP 24684 Sea Heart holds up much better to the heat and humidity and it flowers about one to two weeks early than other selections with a lovely two-toned bloom. If you’ve always wanted a brunnera in your garden, this brunnera is for you — even if you live somewhere where the summers are hot and humid. It holds up well and keeps going well into fall until a good hard frost takes it out. We’ve also noticed that other brunnera are affected by foliar, nematodes and ‘SeaHeart’ and ‘Silver Heart’ are NOT.

‘SILVER HEART’ PP 24685 We planted this new selection side-by-side with ‘Looking Glass’ and noticed a huge difference in foliage toughness. The leaves are thicker and more pubescent (or hairier) and they hold up much better in extreme heat and humidity. The blooms are still deep cobalt blue and the foliage is as silver as a baracuda’s skin. Try this plant in your shade garden. In the shade and on warm summer evenings, each leaf looks like a little moon, lighting up the garden. The mature leaves are as big as your head! We’ve noticed that other Brunnera are affected by foliar, nematodes and ‘SeaHeart’ and ‘Silver Heart’ are NOT.
CAMPANULA ‘FREYA’ PP 22738 Freya stands at a maximum of 15" tall in full bloom and spreads to make a lovely, floriferous, yet contained clump full of blue-violet flowers. The Great Hydrangea Mystery WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED? One of the most commonly asked questions at garden centers worldwide is — Why didn’t my hydrangea bloom? You need to know which kind of hydrangea you have, because it’s a bit complicated. First, some definitions: There are three ways in which hydrangeas flower — those that flower on new wood, those that flower on old wood, and now there are some newer selections that flower on new and old wood and therefore they require little or no pruning each year. Old Wood means this plant’s branches have been on the hydrangea since the summer before the current season, and flower buds for the next spring are formed the fall prior on those branches. In warmer climates (USDA Zone 7 and warmer), this type of plant should not have any die back. People living in colder climates should not plant this type of hydrangea — stick to selections that bloom on new only or new and old wood. New wood means branches that will develop on the plant during the current growing season, so even in cold climates (USDA Zone 6 and colder), you should get flowers each season. The caveat here is — the flower buds form in the fall under the soil, and then emerge in the spring. That said, if you notoriously have warm fall weather late into fall and then some cold snaps, the buds forming under the soil for next year’s flowers could still be frozen. We’ve found mulching in the early fall with composted leaf litter, composted hardwood or pine bark heavily on the crown (the spot where all of the branches come together at the base) will keep the buds under the soil warm and toasty until they can harden off for winter. Leave the mulch until you see green leaves forming in the spring. This type of hydrangea blooms a little later in the summer. Pruning hydrangeas that bloom on new wood (this year’s branches). This type of hydrangea is determined to flower every single year, no matter how they are treated. Prune these plants in the late summer after they have bloomed to manage their size only. If the size is fine, wait until spring to prune. And by pruning, we mean cut back last year’s branches that have died back and do not produce any new leaves in the spring. Do not prune these after the new branches emerge from the soil because you will cut off the flower buds that are forming. Pruning hydrangeas that bloom old wood. Unless your hydrangea gets too big for its space, you do not need to prune selections that bloom on old wood until late spring — and then if there is a little dieback on the tips of the branches — prune back to the spot on the branch where you see new leaves emerging. These hydrangeas are perfect for more southern, or coastal climates. Pruning hydrangeas that bloom on both new and old wood. Prune these hydrangeas only if they are getting too large for the space or if you want to remove old flowers in late summer. If you prune them much beyond late summer, you will risk removing the flower buds that are developing on the current branches. If you have one of these hydrangeas and you live in the north, you may see dieback on the branches. We suggest waiting until Memorial Day weekend to see where the green leaves are on the branches. If there is any branch that has dead wood above the last green leaf, cut the branch back to the first green leaf to remove the dead wood.
What if you don’t have a garden, and you want to grow hydrangeas? Grow your hydrangeas in a container. It’s easy! Since our hydrangeas are hardy to USDA zone 5, anyone living in Zone 5 and warmer should be able to grow the Everlasting® & Magical® hydrangeas in a large pot outside and leave it outside until a hard freeze, then bring them indoors and place them in a sunny window until it’s warm enough to put them back outside the next year. The leaves will fall off inside. Water and fertilize the plants regularly and they will start to leaf out in mid January and then be ready for going outside in late spring — when all threat of frosts are over in your area. Note: if your indoor winter spot does not have good ventilation, you may see some two-spotted spider mites on the leaves. They will make the leaves look like they have specs of sand on them. If you see this, spray the plants with some insecticidal soap. That should do the trick.

Some varieties are fed up with being lumped into the “common lilac” category of Syringa vulgaris. They don’t want to be thought of as oversized, treelike shrubs that bloom for a few weeks in the spring. How is THAT going to work in our smaller urban gardens? And what about summer fragrance or fall color? Don’t they count? Violet Uprising™ is raising her branches to the sky in a newfound solidarity. We’re making history here people! An upright form of Manchurian lilac, Violet Uprising’s branches are strongly ascending as a very young plant — think goalpost. Lightly fragrant clusters of violet colored flowers form 12” panicles in early summer, measuring 6” across — also reaching upward. It has extraordinary spring, summer and fall color that will light up any garden space. Each spring, bright, lime-green needles emerge with a rosy-orange frosting, making for a two-toned effect. As the summer days grow longer, and the heat and humidity pick up, the needles change to bright, chartreuse and don’t fade until fall brings on a bright, orange hue. This new selection can take full sun without foliage burn, but will be just as colorful in part shade. Use it as an accent in a mixed border or a focal specimen in any garden space for months of color and a gorgeous backdrop to flowering shrubs.

TILIA ‘KROMM’ SWEET

An extremely uniform grower, Kromm linden is a selection found by Darrell Kromm of Reesville Ridge Nursery in Reeseville, WI. Favored for its tight, pyramidal habit, it has lustrous dark-green leaves that persist late into the season. The bark is light grey to silver in color. Sweet Street™ originated from a native seed source in Dodge Co. WI, making it very winter hardy. Due to its narrow habit, it can be used in more constricted spaces than other Tilia cultivars, giving us the confidence that Sweet Street will make a useful tree for urban street plantings. Like all Tilia americana, it has sweet smelling flowers that are prized by bee keepers for the linden honey they make. It appears to have good Japanese beetle resistance but hasn’t been thoroughly tested for that trait yet. Size: 30’ tall by 15’ wide
