The ANESEC Committee is delighted that you have found your way to the 2nd version of our ‘Inside ANESEC’ brochure.
Needless to say, the Covid-19 pandemic has stamped the last few years and forced us to adapt to new reg ulations and behaviours, which we had not previously experienced. Students and universities were limited to remote learning and teaching, ousting the aspects many of us have known and appreciated so far. Simi larly, physical events such as our Business Day had to be cancelled and thus had to be replaced by virtual sessions and events. Consequently, Covid-19 and its repercussions have encumbered students from net working and having their first contact with the pro fessional world.
As a student association, our fundamental mission is to support university students and provide them with opportunities to enter the professional world. With the increased use of digital tools, ANESEC has replaced physical events with remote ones in order to ensure a continued strong connection between our eagerly encouraged members and the professional working world in Luxembourg.
The purpose of this brochure is to highlight our dif ferent activities and events throughout the academic year of 2021/2022. Specifically, the booklet contains information about the association, its members, its mission, and its partners.
Furthermore, we wanted to showcase some typical jobs for Economics and Business students and asked our broad alumni network to describe their job and what they do on a day-to-day basis. This description should give you a better understanding of what these jobs mainly consist of and thus require from you. Fos
tering the link between students and the professional world and bringing young and old with common in terests together is essential to our mission as a stu dent association. Additionally, these professionals and the ANESEC committee are always keen to help you if you have any further doubts and would also be delighted about a LinkedIn connection request to ex pand the already growing ANESEC network.
Finally, on behalf of ANESEC, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to:
Our partners for their continuous support throughout the last years and our good collabora tion during these difficult times.
Our alumni for the time and energy they have invest ed into this association, and without whom ANESEC would not be what it is today.
My wonderful committee, without whom this year would not have been the same. Thank you for your continued efforts, time, and motivation, which have made this challenging year successful and rewarding.
Our members, students, and future students: Your interest and feedback are crucial to ANESEC’s development.
That being said, after this fascinating and fruitful time, it is with a heavy heart, enduring memories and many influential relationships that I hand over the reins to the new president.
Pit Scheer, President 2021 / 22

Who is ANESEC and what do we do?
The National Association of Students in Business and Economics (ANESEC) was founded in the early 80’s. In 1994, the ANESEC was officially registered and ad opted a non-profit association status. Furthermore, ANESEC is co-founder of the Fondation des Universi taires en Sciences Economiques (FUSE) and serves as an advisory member to the Association des Cercles Luxembourgeois (ACEL). Today the association is the only national organization representing the interests of Luxembourg’s business and economics students from all over Europe. The association is managed by a board of approximately 10 representatives exercising their mandate as volunteers and for the good of its member students.
ANESEC has three main priorities:
In a first instance, we guide and assist high school students in their decision-making process for higher education studies in our field of interest. Hence, we attend events of several high schools in Luxem bourg throughout the year in order to share our ex periences with the students. For instance, having completed several university applications ourselves, we try to help them understand the requirements needed to attend certain universities across different countries. We also encourage students to contact us at any time of the year for any further assistance they might need. Hence, at the beginning of the academ ic year, our ‘Primaner Box’, including several gadgets and contact information sheets, is distributed among Luxembourg’s graduating highschool students with the main goal of emphasizing our presence as well as our willingness to support and assist.
Furthermore, we act as an intermediate party between students and professionals, enabling the former to gather first insights into the labour market. As such, we organize several yearly events during which students get the opportunity to net work with our partners, and thus create valuable connections with renowned national employers. Fur thermore, these events often come along with great opportunities such as, individual speed interviews,, professional headshots for LinkedIn profiles and re sumes, technical workshops, roundtable discussions and many more. Consequently, these events support students in landing valuable internships and/or their first entry level position.
Moreover, as an association, we are engaged in educating students about the current national and international trending topics within the domains of economics and business. Hence, with the help of our partners and local experienced professionals from the field, we organize lectures and roundtable discus sions with the main goal of giving students unique and essential insights into todays’ topics of interest. This year’s Career Opportunity Day for instance, en abled students to listen to and connect with leaders within the field of Cryptocurrencies, Blockchain and Financial Technology.
Lastly, we organize several informal events to bring economics and business students closer to gether and thus create a valuable network. This enables students to share their experience over some food and drinks while exchanging perspectives and connecting with former students as well as ANESEC alumni.

Roles within ANESEC President & Advisor
How would you explain your job to students and recent graduates?
“ I have different responsibilities in my current posi tion. As a purchasing analyst, I am responsible for or dering and managing the stock of our most high-sell ing items in the US. In other words, I make sure that our customers can buy their baguettes at every one of our stores! Furthermore, I also contribute to deci sion making and problem solving through analyses of ordering and sales data. “
What do you like most about your job?
“ What I like most about my job is that I can literally see the outcome. I can go to any Lidl store and buy the food I ordered. I was always interested in the food industry and supply chains. Thinking about all the steps and work that go into selling an item amazes me. Working for an international retail brand, whose supply chain is highly impacted by global events, is exciting and doesn’t get boring – especially in the current circumstances. “
What is the most challenging part of your job?
“ Professionally, the biggest challenge is having to deal with factors that are out of your control. The global supply chain crisis is putting retailers to a real test. You can be as good as possible at your job, but there is nothing you can do about unforeseen cir cumstances. Personally, working in the US has been
a bit of a challenge as well, as the work culture differs widely from the European one. However, working for a European company in the US made this transition smoother! “
What skills are required?
“ In my opinion a mix between soft and hard skills are necessary for this job. Among the former, I believe common sense, problem-solving and effective com munication are essential. To be comfortable in your position you also should not be afraid to step up and ask questions. Among hard skills, Excel and Power BI are particularly useful. I can only recommend prac tising these skills or taking online classes, as they are very useful when starting in an analyst position. “
What should our members study to be optimally suited for a career in your branch?
“ Anything related to business, management and supply chain is helpful for my current position. How ever, I believe that personal motivation and effort are the key factors to succeeding in this role. The more passionate you are about a topic, the easier it will be to spend the necessary time on it to improve. Every job will provide you the accurate amount of training and resources needed to perform if, you are willing to put in the effort. “

CLAIRE JÉNIN
Current Occupation Marketing department at Banque Raiffeisen
How would you explain your job to students and recent graduates?
“ The main objective of my work is to ensure that our banking products and services are in line with the evolution of the financial markets and correspond to the needs of our clients and prospects. To do this, our team monitors the market, analyses customer expectations and satisfaction and implements stra tegic marketing campaigns. “
What do you like most about your job?
“ Something I appreciate about my job is the close cooperation with other departments, such as Com munications, Private Banking, Corporate and our Branch Network. This close cooperation is essential to get a complete vision of the Bank and to better market our range of products. “
What is the most challenging part of your job?
“ In a constantly changing financial environment, it is a challenge to attract and retain customers and strive for continuous growth. “
What skills are required?
“ The ability to analyse critically, enjoyment of project management and creativity are necessary, as well as an interest in the Luxembourg banking sector. “
What should our members study to be optimally suited for a career in your branch?
“ Studies in marketing or strategic management as well as an educational background in economics are particularly important for these careers. “

JACQUES HOFFMANN
Joined ANESEC in 2011 - 2013 Roles within ANESEC Board Member
Current Occupation Head of ESG at Banque Raiffeisen
How would you explain your job to students and recent graduates?
“ As a Head of ESG one is responsible for all the bank’s activities which are related to Sustainable Finance, ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). This includes amongst others coordinating and initiating Sustain able Projects (e.g. development of sustainable prod ucts) and participating in the latest, contributing to the overall ESG strategy of the bank, reporting (e.g. extra-financial report), tracking and analysing of the latest developments in this field, representing the bank internally and externally in sustainable matters and finally understanding the various activities of the bank and trying to create synergies. “
What do you like most about your job?
“ The transversality of my function is the most inter esting part. As a Head of ESG, you must be able to work together with nearly all the business unities of a bank in order to implement the numerous Sustain able Finance, ESG and CSR projects. The diversity of subjects and the strategic part of this function would be other positive points to highlight. “
What is the most challenging part of your job?
“ Keeping up with the “Tsunami” of EU regulations re lated to sustainability (CSRD, SFRD, MiFID, EU Taxon omy, CSDDD…) is probably the most challenging part
of my job at the moment. Especially the fact that no blueprint exists which can be taken to implement these concepts as they are fairly new and they need to be implemented “at once” in a very short period of time. “
What skills are required?
“ Being versatile and curious are probably the two main soft skills which are required. Regarding the hard skills, solid management studies (including Law, Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Business Ad ministration, Human Resources, Risk Management, Languages, Economics…) would give you the most valuable toolkit you need to be good in this job. “
What should our members study to be optimally suited for a career in your branch?
“ International Management with a specialisation in Sustainable Finance would be a good basis to start a career in my branch. Furthermore, lifelong learning and executive education classes are of paramount importance to adapt and to be able to evolve in a fast-moving Sustainable Finance, ESG and CSR land scape. In the end, my university studies at ICHEC –Brussels Management School gave me this toolkit mentioned before and the continuous will to learn during my work life allowed me to adapt to any kind of challenges which arose during my career so fare. “

CÉDRIC CRELO
Joined ANESEC in / Roles within ANESEC Head of Events Current Occupation Head of Communications and Chief Spokesperson at the European Stability Mechanism.
How would you explain your job to students and recent graduates?
“ As Head of communications, I manage both ex ternal and internal communications. I deal with the following questions: why communicate (aim), with whom (audiences), where (channels), what (messag es), how (tone of voice, level of complexity), and when (timeline and cadence). As a Spokesperson, I am in teracting with media and press, as well as my peers in other institutions. “
What do you like most about your job?
“ The scope is broad, and the substance is very much policy oriented. It requires to have a good overall un derstanding of the institution itself, and of the de bates that are of interest to the institution. “
What is the most challenging part of your job?
You need to be able to react to events at any time. It can be challenging in a 24/7 news cycle where news is instantaneous.
What skills are required?
“ Being able to communicate well, both in oral and in written forms, to think strategically, and to be vig ilant. “
What should our members study to be optimally suited for a career in your branch?
“ Given the nature of the institution and the position, preferable degrees are in economics, finance, inter national relations, communications, or journalism. A combination is always great! “

ANNE LOESCH
Joined ANESEC in 2017 - 2021
Roles within ANESEC Committee member, secretary, vice president and president in 2021.
Current Occupation Advisor at KPMG Luxembourg in the Public Sector and National Corporate Accounts department.
How would you explain your job to students and recent graduates?
“ 3 words: Interesting, challenging and multifaceted! Since joining KPMG two years ago, I’ve been able to work on a variety of projects covering a wide range of topics. There are times when the workload can be relatively high, but the job comes with a steep learn ing curve and there is a lot to gain on both a personal and professional level. You do not often get to touch so many different subjects in such a short period of time, which allows you to develop a wide spectrum of skills and experience. “
What do you like most about your job?
“ The fact that every day is different from the previous one. “
What is the most challenging part of your job?
“ Staying agile. In a constantly changing work envi ronment, it is sometimes a challenge to stay agile. “
What skills are required?
“ In my opinion, you need two things: Motivation and the curiosity to discover new subjects and to learn. With these two things, you have an excellent starting point for a career in advisory. “
What should our members study to be optimally suited for a career in your branch?
“ I can only speak for myself and my own job position, but in my opinion, no field of study is the perfect fit. At university you learn the theory or methodology of how to approach a problem and solve it; at work you will learn how to apply that theory or methodology in practice. “

TOM STEFFEN
Joined ANESEC in 2013 - 2015
Roles within ANESEC Vice President
Current Occupation Quantitative Research Director, Osmosis Investment Management, London.
“ My role consists of leading the quantitative re search effort for a boutique sustainable investment management company headquartered in London, UK. My research has as starting point that sustain able investment should not come at the cost of fi nancial returns and that sustainability metrics can successfully drive investment decisions. Conducting quantitative analysis, I try to understand how envi ronmental data, such as the carbon emissions, water usage, and waste generation of the world’s largest publicly listed companies, interacts with their finan cial balance sheet and stock market performance. I use econometric techniques to systematically evalu ate how companies’ environmental footprints relate to the economic value that they generate. My task is to provide robust evidence that companies that are more environmentally friendly compared to their competitors, perform better than those that are pol luting more heavily. “
client facing work. I value that there is a tangible out come of my work, with the research insights directly translating into portfolio construction and therefore influencing the allocation of capital towards sustain able business practices. I contribute in moving the needle, if ever so slightly, towards the transition to a greener economy. “
What is the most challenging part of your job?
“ The nature of research, whether quantitative or fun damental, can be a challenge in itself. It is normal for many projects to lead to ‘null results’, meaning you test a hypothesis and the resulting evidence is incon sistent with the initial hypothesis. While from a sci entific perspective null results are still results as they are informative and contribute to knowledge, they are less exciting and often do not have the same di rect impact. It is not uncommon for 75% of projects to yield null results, which can be frustrating. One tends to perceive them as a failure and a waste of time giv en the great amount of work that has gone into the ‘unsuccessful’ research project. “
“ My job is very diverse. This has in part to do with the fact that quantitative research can be used to tackle many different questions, but it can also be attribut ed to the fact that I work for a smaller company. As such, I am exposed to the many different functions that make up an investment management compa ny ranging from data management and research to portfolio management and execution, as well as
What skills are required?
“ Quantitative research requires skills from several different subject areas. The data handling portion of the job requires knowledge of database manage ment and data handling, for example through pro gramming languages such as SQL and Python. It has certain elements of data science to it. The anal

ysis portion requires an understanding of statistics and econometrics – a combination of economic the ory, mathematics, and statistical modelling – and coding in R, MATLAB, or STATA. Finally, a good under standing of financial markets and investment man agement allows to ask the right questions in the first place. Given the sustainability angle, in my specific case, a basic understanding of environmental sci ence is also helpful. “
Are you an alumni?
“ There are probably two routes that are most com mon. The first route consists of traditional economics or finance studies, combined with a technical dispo sition and interest in picking up some data handling and programming experience along the way. The second route consists of a natural sciences degree in physics, mathematics, or the like, the curriculum of which tends to cover the required technical skills. The financial and economic knowledge is then acquired on the job. An alternative would be a computer sci ence degree as it teaches the required database and programming skills. However, it is likely more of a challenge to simultaneously pick up the economet rics and financial knowledge required. “

Halloween Warm-up Event ANESEC – October 2021
After almost 2 years of online events due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the ANESEC committee of 2021/2022 was very pleased to organise the first in-person event again, the Halloween Warm-up. This was an informal event where our members could meet up in a casual environment and get to know each other. The event took place in Wellem (Luxembourg City) and was or ganised around the theme of Halloween as it took place the weekend just before. We wanted to organ ise our first in-person event with a more casual back
ground in order to create a good atmosphere among our members and to give them the opportunity to connect with each other. This was a great possibility to meet without having the pressure of a corporate event as the pandemic has not allowed this for many months and we thought that it would create a better environment for our members.
page 60
Business Day – December 2021
The Business Day in December 2021 was an online event as Covid-19 cases were rising again and we didn’t want to put our participating students or our partners at risk just right before the holidays. The event took place over two days and the goal was to bring ANESEC members in touch with our partners for potential internship or job opportunities. Each student had a 15-minute time slot with our partners on Teams where they could discuss what a regular working day would look like in the different compa
nies, what the hiring criteria are and how they could best prepare for an interview. We received very pleas ant feedback from the end of the students and the partners and we are happy to announce that many students found an internship or a job due to this event. Overall, this occasion was a huge success and the committee plans on preserving it in their annual calendar.

STATEC Visit – January 2022
In January 2022, some of our current and also alum ni committee members had the great opportunity to meet Dr Serge Allegrezza, Director of STATEC, the na tional institute of statistics and economic studies, as well as the founding President of the ANESEC asso ciation. Apart from discussing relevant national top ics, such as the current job market in Luxemburg, the committee members had the chance to learn more about the history of ANESEC, the difficulties that arose with the former economic situation, as well as
Dr Allegrezza’s crucial role as founder and president during the very first years of the organisation. Hence, we would like to thank Dr Serge Allegrezza for his time and his knowledgeable insights into these es sential domains.
page 62
KPMG Meeting – June 2022
Some of our committee members were pleased to be received by KPMG, one of our partners, to discuss the partnership of ANESEC and KPMG. This was a hybrid event where some of our committee members were received in the offices of KPMG, while others joined virtually. The goal of this meeting was to come up with ideas on how to reinforce the connection be tween ANESEC and KPMG in the future. Feedback was given from both parties and it was a rather casual meeting where everyone could express their opinion
freely. It was also a great opportunity for our commit tee members to get in touch with the KPMG partners in order to expand their professional network.

ANESEC Career Opportunity Day– April 2022
The first edition of the ANESEC Career Opportunity Day took place on the 9th of April 2022 in the Cham bre of Commerce of Luxembourg. We were more than honoured to receive Mr Nasir Zubairi, Ms Maria Mateo Iborra and Mr Michel Rauchs for our panel discussion moderated by Ms Giulia Iannucci. Unfor tunately, Mr Georges Bock and Mr Thomas Campio ne could not join the panel discussion anymore due to last-minute inconveniences. The panel discussion was considering the topic of “Cashless society – The future of cryptocurrencies, blockchain and financial technology in Luxembourg”. After the experts had a debate about the hot topic focussing on the sit uation in Luxembourg, the participants could ask questions and get engaged in a discussion as well.
The next part of the event included some workshops given by our partners. We organised multiple work shops including a case study, a CV & LinkedIn check, and a job interview preparation. Afterwards, the par ticipating students were led to our job fair where our partners were having their stands. The students were discussing potential internships and job positions and received tips & tricks on how to apply in the best pos sible way. In the end, the event was rounded off with a networking cocktail where our participating students could get in touch with each other, the panellists, and our partners. The feedback that we’ve received was on a very positive note and we are looking forward to the edition taking place in spring 2023.
page 64
Foire de l’Etudiant – October 2021
A few of our committee members participated in the annual “Foire de l’Etudiant” which was held in October 2021 at the University of Luxembourg in Belval. Our committee members were there to present higher education in business and econom ics and student life in general. Students could ask specific questions about our association, but also more general ones about the different studies that they wanted to pursue. They were mainly interest ed in talking about possible job opportunities after finishing their degrees and which countries would
fit their needs the best. Our committee members ex plained that it is important to have a solid base in eco nomics, mathematics and statistics when wanting to start an economics degree at university. Additionally, the world of work and multiple career opportunities through direct interaction with our committee mem bers were further explained. For us, the goal of this event was to create awareness of our association and to help the students with our small but valuable ex perience.
High School Orientation Days – January & July 2022
To round this year off, a few committee members were presenting our association to students in the “Lycée du Nord” and the “Lycée des Garcons de Luxembourg” at their annual orientation day. Our members first presented what a classic economics or business degree looks like in different countries at diverse universities, and then proceeded to focus on our association and our goals. They presented the committee, its obligations, and the events that took place during this year.

CAREER OPPORTUNITY DAY: PANEL DISCUSSION
As a part of the “Career Opportunity Day 2022”, the ANESEC committee organised a panel discussion on the topic of “Cashless Society – The future of crypto currencies, blockchain and financial technology in Luxembourg” to provide the members of ANESEC with the possibility to gather crucial insights on the applicability, use cases and current developments of blockchain in the financial technology space.
The framework of the panel discussion was set by Na sir Zubairi, CEO of the Luxembourgish house of finan cial technology, who opened the floor for discussion on the feasibility of cryptocurrencies as a medium of exchange by holding a presentation on the history of money. This presentation guided the participants back through time ranging from periods of bartering for goods and services, the usage of gold and silver coins to the abolition of the gold standard for the US dollar with the end of the Bretton Woods system and the resulting creation of the dollar as a fiat currency. Nasir concluded his presentation by explaining his initial scepticism towards the idea that Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies (i.e. stable coins via smart contracts) represent the next step in the history of money but argued how digitalisation and the current macroeco nomic setting result in legibility towards this point of view.
After the presentation, Nasir was joined by Maria Ma teo Iborra, Co-founder and CEO of IBISA, and Michel Rauchs, Digital Assets Lead at the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance to kick off the panel discussion which was moderated by Giulia Iannucci. The panel discussion included topics ranging from the ideas of cryptocurrencies as a medium of exchange, the toke nization of equity through DTL (Distributed Ledger
Technology) to the recent developments made in the gamification of tokens, smart contract layer 1´s and decentralised applications. The key takeaway of the discussion consisted of the fact that while the use cases of blockchain and cryptocurrency are evolving, the adoption of the technology still requires time as it is driven by variables such as consumer demand, technological applicability, regulatory framework and the global perception and confidence towards the blockchain technology.
Furthermore, the strategic position of Luxembourg was highlighted through the panel discussion due to the country’s strong reliance on the financial industry for the country’s economy. This situation puts Luxem bourg in a delicate spot, since Blockchain technolo gy could revolutionise the principles of traditional fi nance but comes with risks due to the early stage of the technology. Thus, Luxembourg faces numerous trade-off challenges regarding the adoption of block chain since the country needs to ensure its safe-hav en reputation on the international scene and its AAA rating, making the country risk-averse while being risk-seeking and adopting the technology could put the country in a favourable strategic position benefit ing from first-mover advantages.
To conclude, the panel discussion highlighted the optimism of the experts toward the technology and undermined the feasibility of this asset class as an investment vehicle once the general consensus has recognized the true potential of blockchain in an adapted regulatory framework.
