Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.’ (Matthew 11.28-30 The Message translation) Thanks to the generosity of people in this parish Hazel and I were able to spend five days recently at Lee Abbey on the dramatic North Devon coast, near the Valley of the Rocks at Lynton. Lee Abbey is home to a Christian community that hosts a conference, retreat and holiday centre where individuals and groups come to be renewed and inspired by God. The ninety strong community is made up of mostly young people from across the world. There are currently nineteen different nationalities represented and our enthusiastic hosts for the week were from the UK, Spain, Germany, Bulgaria, Brazil and Uganda. They looked after our needs beautifully and often led our times of worship; their faith and enthusiasm were inspiring.

Lee Abbey is a very special place for anyone who wants to get away for a few days from our driven world to find rest. The vision is continued on page 3

threefold: (i) that we should be taken deeper into an experience of community through the rich tapestry of friendships there, (ii) that we should enjoy God’s creation by being taken deeper into the countryside (the house sits in 280 acres of Exmoor National Park, and (iii) that one should be taken deeper into God by slowing down, resting and refocusing.

Hazel and I had a lovely time and felt that Lee Abbey had indeed given us all three experiences. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the gift to allow us to return to one of our favourite places. We have come away refreshed and encouraged.

Life is so hectic, so noisy, so distracting. It’s no wonder we find it hard to listen to God. C.S. Lewis wrote that all the noise in our lives begins the moment we wake up in the morning. Hopes, dreams, anxieties all come rushing in on us like wild animals. ‘The first job each morning consists in shoving them all back; in listening to that other Voice, taking that other point of view, letting that other, larger, stronger, quieter life come flowing in.’1 I have been asked recently if we are going to have another Quiet Day this year. The answer is ‘Yes and No’. Those who have attended the previous four such days that we have held say how much they have enjoyed them, which is great. However, the numbers attending have not been huge. One reason for this might be that the prospect of a whole day is too daunting for people. Whilst numbers are not what are important, if the length of the event is putting off some, we need to address it. So we have decided to try a ‘Quiet Morning’ instead this year. Mel and Edward Chandler have again kindly offered us Heydon Place garden to relax in and enjoy some refreshments on Saturday 12th September (10am – 1pm). Why not give it a try? Let’s set aside a morning together to let the world go by, to let that other quieter life flow in, and to get in step with the unforced rhythms of God’s grace.

75 Years On –

Policemen told us off if we were not carrying our gas masks everywhere we went.

At school we had regular air raid practices when we all rehearsed going to the shelters (a welcome break in lessons). There was a shortage of sweets (shame!) and toys vanished from the shops.

Clothes and toys were now “handed down” inside families. Children were evacuated from the cities (three million of them), but gradually crept back home (twothirds) because the bombs did not come, at first.

For six months bombing was unusual. In the school yard a good

I remember in September 1939 there was a sudden increase in bossy adults. We had Air Raid Wardens (on bikes with whistles) inspecting our houses and giving us advice. The Auxiliary Fire Service checked our fire equipment (stirrup pump, buckets of sand). The council inspected our Anderson

Oxford Street. The bombers dropped large numbers of incendiary bombs to start fires at first, and then followed up with high explosive bombs to prevent them being put out. I visited my father one day to find a large hole where the next building used to be. “Don’t tell your mother” I was instructed.

In 6 months London had two million homes destroyed or damaged and 35,000 people were killed or seriously wounded. There would have been many more but the underground stations were safe places to sleep and Londoners became cave dwellers at night.

After this period of intense bombing, it never really stopped and even in country places bombs fell, sometimes in open fields.

My wife, Maggie, had a house not far from a railway line, a possible target. A large, highly explosive land mine, (an enormous bomb on a parachute) was dropped and came down in their back garden. It was caught in a tree about three metres from the house and was swinging about one and half metres above the ground. Her father, the local air raid warden, supervised the evacuation of the street and Maggie slept with a friendly neighbour that night.

We all helped each other in the Blitz. Looking back, we are fortunate to have survived!

Evacuees from Tottenham taught us new words and music hall songs. It was the “phoney war” when the fighting was in Europe. After that came the Battle of Britain (6 months) when our Air Force was attacked, then in September 1940 the bombing started. For a period of 57 days there was a bombing every day, especially in London.

In our house we followed the advice of our Air Raid Warden, and slept downstairs. Our parents moved the double bed into the safest area and my sister and I had a mattress on the floor underneath them. Air raid sirens went and we heard the bombers going over to, or from, London. We got used to the sound of their engines and could distinguish “friend” from “foe”.

Our local anti-aircraft guns made sleep impossible.

The bad nights, when mother was nervous, were when my father did fire-fighting duty in London, just off

Race For Life: Cambridge

We are so grateful to everyone who so very kindly supported us and donated towards the 5k Race For Life on 19th July. We proudly finished in 31 minutes; our best time ever, and with your help, raised over ÂŁ1100 towards Cancer Research UK. It was a wonderful experience starting with an inspirational talk from a Cancer Research scientist who is actually a survivor herself. She thanked us all profusely as, without our support, the amazing work into this deadly disease just couldn't take place; they are making huge leaps forward in their DNA research.

Runners wear a number on their front and on their back; on a separate panel, you write about whom you are running for on the day. We read so many very moving tales, which made it an emotional experience for us all and we're not ashamed to say that we certainly had a few tears when we finished, knowing that every step we had taken, we had raised crucial funds for Cancer Research, whilst thinking of those close to us. Thank you so much.

St Swithun's Church Refurbishment Appeal Midsummer Ball

A huge and very heartfelt thanks to all who came, enjoyed, supported and contributed to the wonderful evening on 20th June, that raised £9,500 for the church refurbishment appeal fund. We have received many emails and texts and have had many a conversation reflecting on an evening that was enjoyed by so many in our community. We have noted suggestions for another time!

Mad Hatter’s Tea Party We were delighted that so many people of all ages came to enjoy the music of Saffron Walden County High Jazz Band, the story teller Gillian McClure, the tea, the BBQ and bar and the activities at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party on 21st June, which raised about £1000.

Amazing Knight Riders Well, we made it, and we made it on time! We left Winchester Cathedral soon after 6pm on Saturday, with a kind and supportive message from the Dean at the end of Evensong Service. Through some stunning Hampshire scenery, we then crossed a lively Saturday Night Basingstoke unscathed.

And after a (thankfully) flatter stretch through Berkshire, we arrived in Maidenhead after dark. The generosity of the manager of “Maidenhead Spice Restaurant” in serving us well after his closing time was very much

appreciated. A few hours’ sleep in a modest hotel by the river was all we could spare, before breakfast at the surprisingly well-stocked co-op in the petrol station across the road, and getting the wheels turning again. The light drizzle soon cleared as we toiled along the southern edge of the Chilterns and on into Hertfordshire, finally arriving to a very warm welcome at St Swithun’s, Great Chishill in Cambridgeshire at 11.15 (with two hymns to spare!) 128 miles/205 km (8150 calories burnt – according to Rob’s trip computer) And £3400 raised and counting... I would like to sincerely thank all of you for your generosity in supporting our appeal.

Your kind donations will make a real difference in the renovation of our Church for generations to come. The appeal had set a target of £50,000 to be raised over 2 years (from Nov 2014) and we are already well on our way to being able to start some of the crucial work soon. Finally, I would especially like to thank Dan Tweedie, Dan Jenkin, and Rob Hastings, for taking up the challenge and joining me on this trip, as well as their fundraising. I would not have been able to complete it alone. It was only our combined effort that got us to the church on time (along with Rob’s malt loaf and Nutella combination– the food of champions!). For Whom the Bell Tolls*

Anne Lane and Melanie Chandler had some hand bells to collect from and deliver to Whitechapel Bell Foundry - so got a party together of bell ringers, hand bell ringers and others who piled into Drayton’s’ minibuses on 17th May for a guided tour by the owner, Alan Hughes. It was a fascinating experience.

The place is a warren of workshops: a foundry for casting bells, tuning area for shaving off metal to get exactly the right pitch, carpentry shop in the attic for headstocks and bell wheels and a separate precision shop for hand bells. All is fitted into a tiny site less than a third of an acre. It moved to Whitechapel from The City in 1738, and expanded by building into a row of cottages, whose roof now form the attic carpentry shop and with walls lined with shingles commemorating long-gone employees.

Whitechapel is an English company and institution going back to the 1400’s. Formally registered in 1570, it is the oldest company in the UK. The company cast Boston’s Liberty Bell, St Pauls and Westminster bells and Big Ben, as well as many of our bells locally. The look of the workshops reminded me of Drayton’s Garage when full – as did the speed and responsiveness of the firm. A hand-bell team touring Peru can get a replacement bell cast in 5 working days. It was a shame that Paul Drayton had to mind the minibuses and couldn’t join us as technical advisor.

Tours can only be conducted during the factory shutdown, as there is no

room to move once the 28 employees are at work. Alan bemoaned the fact that bells are too durable, there is very little in the way of a replacement market. In the assembly area alongside Meldreth’s bells was one for renovation that was cast in the 1480’s, before Columbus sailed. Although church bellringing (change ringing) is an English tradition (5000 ringing towers in England as opposed to 200 abroad) the expanding export market is important to keep Whitechapel afloat and hand bells a particularly important trade. A full set can cost up to £26,000. If you fancy a visit, it is far cheaper than the Tower of London – but take Paul with you!

If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.

The initial, familiar line of this excerpt from Meditation XVII was written over 400 years ago, by the metaphysical writer John Donne, famously used as the title of a novel by Hemingway.

Donne wrote the Devotions when he was Dean of St Paul’s, expressing his reflections on the human condition, having experienced a serious illness.

The eponymous Bell is, of course, a funeral bell However, whilst the reference to the tolling was an indication of his sense of impending death, it is also a reference to his profound Christian belief that all Christians are equal and connected as in Christ in one ‘body’.

All mankinde is of one Author, and is one volume; when one Man dies, one Chapter is not torne out of the booke, but translated into a better language.

As individuals, living on Earth, we are part of a much greater whole, so the death bell has a deep, collective meaning. continued on page 14

It is not just a reminder of our own frail human form, reminding us to get our lives in order, as our days on earth are limited by our fragility. The reference also has a much greater implication. We are all in this life together, part of God’s plan, so the bell tolls for the sake of all who are able to hear it, as a reminder. We are all part of God’s family, part of life together and after death we will be re born into a perfect peace in heaven. For Christians, this metaphor, considering us, translated after death, becoming something much better, is both wonderfully imaginative and comforting.

Budding Gifts

Suzanne Clements created Budding Gifts in early 2010, before the birth of her first child.

The first handmade clothing gift was the Classic Baby Bouquet, made for new mum friends.

When her friends received the bouquets, they thought they were so good they encouraged Suzanne to sell them! Since 2011 over 430 bouquets have been made and enjoyed!

Now a full time mum to two children under five, Suzanne enjoys making the bouquets to sell and as presents (when her daughters are asleep in the evenings!) There are now 8 different baby bouquet designs on the online shop www.budding-gifts.co.uk including a Knitted Baby Bouquet, Summer Baby Bouquet (whole outfit in a bouquet) and Baby baskets and Hampers.

Each individual bud is made out of useful or ‘surprising’ items, which make these bouquets really special for the recipients. These bouquets are different to the usual baby bouquets online, as they contain handmade knitted items and hand selected cotton clothing to make outfits and keep baby cosy.

Most of Budding Gifts customers are individuals (who are looking for a

unique baby gift) and companies (who buy bouquets instead of sending flowers to staff on maternity/paternity leave). Bouquets start from £20 plus postage (local delivery available).

A few of Suzanne’s friends have had premature babies and have found it difficult to buy clothing quickly for their newborn, basics from vests to socks. Premature babies need to keep warm and usually wear more ‘wool’ (acrylic yarn) than full term newborns. As they may spend time in an incubator, my friends placed soft toys in there to keep them company. The Premature Baby Bouquet combines these elements for the baby, warmth and company.

Premature babies may be tiny but usually are full of personality from the word go! I learnt this from a visit around St George’s Neonatal unit earlier this year with the charity First Touch (set up in 1998 to support the babies, families and staff on the Neonatal Unit at St George's Hospital). The charity raises money to fund equipment and projects to improve outcomes for the babies and their families. Suzanne is an ambassador for this charity and works with them to provide expertise on legacy giving. 10% of each Premature Baby Bouquet purchased will go to First Touch in a monthly donation.

Local Hero

Emily Pyle, from Elmdon, is busy raising funds for charities in Zanzibar and would really welcome local support.

During a visit to the country the 17-year-old pupil, from Saffron Walden County High, will be working with 12 local charities. She has volunteered to work on an environmental protection scheme on Zanzibar Island in 2016. The work will focus on four marine and forest charities and collecting data on critically endangered species.

She has organized a fashion show and charity shopping evening to raise funds for these charities on Friday 9th October, 7pm at Chrishall School. Tickets £6 from Emily 838651 / emilylpyle@gmail.com. The Value of Jimmy’s

Everyone knows the price of goods they buy. It is right there in our faces every time we shop. We base our budgets around it, we plan around it, and we live life by the prices we see. However, price is just that, money we exchange for goods and services, no more no less. However, the more we see prices the more we look for added value. Take a simple cup of tea; we know the price of it and its constituent parts, even the many variants of tea that exist. Yet, it is virtually impossible to place a value on a cup of tea.

The first one in the morning, the one in time of crises, the one shared with a good friend, the one made for the local tradesmen, all of these have a price, but the value it adds is infinite. It’s a comforter, barrier breaking, warmth, calming, refreshing and a million other things beside. That’s the real value of tea; it can be all things to all people.

Tea is what we are at Jimmy’s. Our diverse support to an ever changing demographic represents the value added of Jimmy’s work. It certainly does cost a lot to run Jimmy’s but that is a price. The far reaching work of our front line support workers leaves a legacy with our guests that carries on helping long after they have left Jimmy’s, just like the rejuvenating effects of tea. We add value in everything we do, bring our experience, add our compassion, remain honest and fair, and aim to help those we see find themselves and rejuvenate before heading out, into hopefully, a more promising world and sustainable life. You can’t put a price on helping someone re-build but you certainly can add value….

Chronicle of Chrishall Readers may be interested in a Chronicle of Chrishall in the Great War, which has been researched by members of the village and has now been place of the Parish Council web site (http://www.chrishallpc.org.uk) under the heading of village history. Much of the information has come from the village museum, if any readers have further information or photographs the authors would be very keen to include this in the chronicle.

Iris Sinfield Lunch on the Lawn We were really lucky with the weather this year, tempting a few brave swimmers to have an outing in the pond! We were serenaded by two musical groups, Venus Grove from Newmarket and our very own local group, Under the Thumb, who very generously provided us with lively music. So far we have raised £1,650 for the Shamsi Lwimba hospital and educational facilities in Zambia.This couldn't have happened without the wonderful support of donations and food, which we received. A huge grateful thank you to all those involved.

Virginia Hamlet Cream Tea The only predicted rain for a week duly turned up on morning of Sunday 28th July but miraculously stopped an hour before the start.

Many thanks to all the kitchen helpers and providers of scones jam and cream, or should it be scones cream and then jam! Thanks to the support of the around 100 people who turned up, £530 was raised in aid of the Hamlet Church.

Windmill Dance Group A new initiative to raise money for the Great Chishill Windmill Trust commences September 11 – learn to dance and help the restoration fund.

David and Wendy McKeown are enthusiastic amateur dancers with experience of teaching basic ballroom and Latin dances. They are looking for absolute beginners to join a class they will run for an hour each Friday evening from 7.30pm in Great Chishill Village Hall.

The start point will be the first fundamental steps and simple routines in waltz, cha-cha, rumba, jive etc. The aim is to make the classes fun. All proceeds beyond the cost of hiring the Hall will go to the Trust. The price for each lesson is £4 per person and there is not a charge for a whole term - you come whenever you can and contribute whatever you wish to the fund. .
