Life Changing Cows!

Every year, during Christian Aid week, 100,00 volunteers demonstrate God’s love by taking part in house-to-house collections for Christian Aid. This year Christian Aid week is 10-16 May. Christian Aid and its partners are working to bring an end to poverty around the world, tackling its root causes as well as its effects. Their work encompasses: Campaigning on gender justice (gender-based discrimination, sexual violence and human rights); work on HIV and tackling malaria.

Responding to emergencies and disasters (e.g. Ebola in Sierra Leone, rebuilding lives after the tsunami in south Asia and the storms in the Philippines; in troubled areas like Gaza, Iraq, and Syria).

Each year the charity picks a simple example of need, to build a campaign upon, to encourage support so that lives can be transformed.

This year the campaign is focusing on improving the lives of women in the poorest countries of the world.

The Christian Aid website features a vulnerable young woman burdened with an improbably huge pile of logs strung on her back. Her name is Loko; she looks barely older than a teenager. Not only does she have to carry this huge, unwieldy weight four times a week, to be able to build fires to cook food for her children, but we discover that she has an eight hour round trip, on foot with her burden, to contend with.

Women in her home area of Ethiopia have few rights that we would recognize.

But a significant change in attitude can be escalated from a simple gesture, that of giving a cow to a woman. In many communities, in this part of the world, cows are one of the most important possessions, used to buy and sell things. Owning a cow gives someone the right to speak out in public meetings. Men tend to own the cows. This gives them a continued on page 3

By giving some of the poorest women a cow, they are in a position to make their opinions heard. They are able to have a positive influence on creating rules to protect girls and women. This year the charity will help Loko and similar women, perhaps to set up a small business, to allow them to care for their families.

Some may ask why they should consider giving support to women in a remote part of Africa. The Bible is quite clear on this. In Matthew we hear Jesus speak on supporting the poorest and most needy.

‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Matthew 25 verse 40 The “least of these” refers to those in a variety of needy situations.

Including the hungry, thirsty, impoverished, sick and imprisoned. Jesus said that those who cared for the needy are not merely serving other people. They are serving Him. With Christ’s words to inspire us let’s consider how we can support this year’s appeal

From the books we read and the food we eat, to the places we live and the people we spend our time with, our lives are made up of choices.

And the end of our lives should be no different. Find out what Macmillan is doing to support choice at the end of life.

Why are we campaigning?

Right now, too many of us aren’t able to choose where we’d like to die because we can’t get the support we’d need to do so. With access to vital services, such as free social care, many more people would be able to spend their precious final days in a familiar place of their choosing.

Providing free social care to people at the end of life therefore presents an opportunity to both support more people’s choices about where and how they die while spending less money doing it.

Each year the NHS spends an estimated £685 million on hospital care at end of life for all people who die in hospital, but who wanted to die at home.

What do we want to change?

We want anyone living with cancer, nearing the end of their lives, to be given the support they need to be able to choose where they are cared for and where they die.

In particular, Macmillan is campaigning to make sure that free social care at the end of life and the freedom to choose where you die become priorities for the government.

In Flanders Field During the early days of the Second Battle of Ypres a young Canadian artillery officer, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, was killed instantly, by a direct hit from an 8 inch German shell, when he left his dug out on 2nd May, 1915, in the gun positions near Ypres. He was serving in the same Canadian artillery unit as a friend of his, the Canadian military doctor and artillery commander John McCrae (30th November 1872 — 28th January 1918) What body parts could be found were later gathered into sandbags and laid in an army blanket for burial that evening.

As the brigade doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was asked to conduct the burial service for Alexis because the chaplain had been called away. It is believed that later that evening, after the burial, John began the draft for his now famous poem “In Flanders Fields� although there are several accounts of how the poem was written.

Soon after its publication, it became the most popular poem on the First World War. It was translated into many languages and used on billboards advertising the sale of the first Victory Loan Bonds in Canada in 1917. Designed to raise $150,000,000, the campaign raised $400,000,000.

Warner Bros Studio Tour

The Parish Youth team is planning an exciting trip to go behind the scenes of the Harry Potter films at the film studios in Leavesden, on Thursday 23 July, for pupils currently in school year 5 up to age 15.

The children will have the opportunity to meet people from behind the scenes and learn about the Christian imagery in JK Rowling's work. As we investigate how the films were made, we shall be discussing the key themes of love, self sacrifice and the triumph of good over evil.

The trip cost will be £15 per person to include entrance tickets and the coach journey. The remainder of the cost will be met by the Parish Youth Fund.

The Odd World of August Mobius 1790-1868 – something for a rainy day!

One day this professor in a German university took a long strip of paper, gave one end a half twist and then joined the ends, making a long loop.

If the loop were long the half twist was not noticeable, in fact it looked like a normal belt. A passing fly would have been interested, even if you were not.

You see, if a fly were to land on the strip and walk along it, leaving dirty footmarks as he went, he would find that he could walk all the way round it and come back to where he started without ever going over an edge and yet covering all the strip with his footmarks (you could try this with a pencil) This piece of paper has only one side; most papers sheets have two sides. An outsider would see two sides, but the fly would know there was only one! It is called a “Mobius Strip”.

If I were to write a letter on such a strip the reader would never have to turn this over. (It only has one side). If you had a roller towel made in this way, you would be able to use all of it without turning it over.

But an envelope for the letter? Would the laundry like the towel? In fact, I know of no use for such a one-surface sheet. But it is different and one of many. If the loop had any odd number of half twists, 1,3,5 etc, the effect would be the same, but they would behave differently.

Take the loop and cut it into two lengthwise. It does not fall into two as an ordinary loop would. With a friend you could cut the loop into three with two parallel lengthwise cuts and the result is even odder. Strips with 1,3,5 etc half twists all behaved oddly when cut lengthwise in two.

You now are an expert on sheets of paper with only one side and have investigated a branch of mathematics with no useful purpose! It led to some mathematicians thinking in three dimensions and producing bottles in which the inside and outside were confused (Klein bottles).

Immeasurably more at Spring Harvest ‘Dancing’ fountains, the flumes and rope walks of Waterworld, a glass of wine with friends and the wide, sandy beaches of the Wash – all added up to FUN at Spring Harvest 2015 – a Christian holiday at Butlins, Skegness.

Not only was there great variety in the food offered (served by the very pleasant and helpful Butlins’ staff) but also a huge variety of teaching and worship on offer. From inspirational talks by Jo Bailey Wells, chaplain to the Archbishop of Canterbury, who invited us to see God as ‘immeasurably more’ than we can imagine, to moving workshops on coping with grief, to challenging thoughts from Lucy Moore, founder of Messy Church, to energetic and noisy (!) children’s groups, there was plenty on offer for all tastes and ages. Plus the ever popular evening celebrations: ‘no holds barred’ singing in the Big Top or (for those of us more staid older folk!) a beautiful reflective time in the alternative worship session.

As the holiday organisers said: ‘To a dehydrated church, Jesus has immeasurably more to offer.’ Spring Harvest takes place every Easter in Skegness and Minehead – why not think about joining in next year?

Farewell After 25 years in Great Chishill, Catherine and Shaun Whyte are moving to Northumberland to be closer to Catherine's mother and sister. We shall greatly miss them and their children, Will, Sal and Ed, all of whom have made a huge contribution to village life.

Catherine has been at the heart of church life as District Council Member and Sunday Club teacher.

She was also the driving force behind the creation of the children's playground in 1994 and several very successful Great Chishill Sport Relief Miles. Shaun worked in the City for many years, played cricket for the village and latterly was Great Chishill's own answer to Lovejoy, running a picture gallery in Saffron Walden. Their children, all of who were baptised in St Swithun's, are well known in the village. Will is now in the Army Intelligence Corps, Sal, a very successful hockey player, is coaching in Holland and Ed, whose performance on the village cricket square is the stuff of legend, is studying Civil Engineering at Newcastle University. We wish them every blessing in their new home.

Roof raising good news Holy Trinity, Heydon has been awarded a grant of £13K, by the Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund, to supplement funds raised locally to repair its roof.

Christian Aid Week 2015 This year the special week dedicated to fund raising for Christian Aid is 10-16 May. The campaign seeks to reduce poverty and bring justice to people across the world, in response to Jesus’ call to help those in need and to love one another.

Envelopes will be available in churches, from the church office and will be inserted in the May Web too. Last year people found it helpful to drop off their envelopes at either the Rectory in Great Chishill or the Church Office, Chrishalll Village Hall. There will be a door to door collection of envelopes in Duddenhoe End, Strethall and Heydon.

Graham Davies Renowned Reader and Professor of Old Testament Studies will be speaking on “Exodus and God’s Transforming Presence” in the parish rooms at St Mary’s Saffron Walden on Thursday 7 May at 8 pm, refreshments from 7.30 pm.

St Swithun’s Midsummer Ball There has been amazing demand for tickets for the Ball, Saturday 20 June, in Great Chishill. The organisers are keen not to disappoint anyone…. A few extra tickets are now available at £70 each.

Through our You and Ministry weekends and ‘lifecall’ events we have seen many young people being selected and trained for ordination. On Monday 29 June at 6.30pm, we are partnering with the Diocese of London and St Mellitus to run a young vocations evening for those aged around 18

18-35. It will be an informative evening with a variety of speakers and plenty of opportunity to ask questions. Please contact Andy 838703 for more info.
