She was with her eight year old brother and hundreds of other children, whose mothers had bravely, in desperation, despatched their precious children, to an unknown country, a thousand miles away.

This country offered hope and safety for these young refugees.

The scheme, which saved this small child, Ruth Barnett, rescued nearly 10,000* predominantly Jewish unaccompanied children from Nazi occupied territories.

British restrictions on immigration had been lifted to accommodate the influx, but each child needed a guarantor, willing to cover the anticipated re-emigration costs, the equivalent of ÂŁ2000 today. *it is estimated that 1.5 million children were murdered by the Nazis continued on page 3

Britain was in turmoil at the time, employment was uncertain, the country was on the brink of war and few households could pay the sum required. A movement was formed to supply the necessary funds.

Desperately sadly, most of these children were never to be reunited with their families. The Nazi assault, on the Jewish people, tore murderously through Europe. Many stayed here; Ruth now dedicates her life to speaking in schools about the Holocaust, highlighting the fate of all those who were persecuted, and encouraging dialogue to avoid prejudice and maltreatment.

This action to rescue refugee children from Nazi persecution became known as “Kindertransport�.

We were surprised at her revelation that many were not happy, at the time, to allow these children to come here. The British public felt that there wasn’t room for them, she said, just as many are saying now.

Her shocking insight seems all the more poignant now, as we are witnessing an enormous tsunami of refugees, flooding across Europe, on foot with nothing but the stubborn aim to get somewhere better than the place they had escaped from.

As a nation we are proud of the life saving action, undertaken in the late 1930s. A large statue at Liverpool Street station, bears two inscriptions: In gratitude to the people of Britain for saving the lives of 10,000 unaccompanied mainly Jewish children who fled from Nazi persecution in 1938 and 1939. about the current refugee crisis. One week, a photograph of a tragically drowned toddler causes widespread dismay and provokes enormous sympathy, with demands for a generous response. In Germany, refugees are greeted with ‘Welcome’ signs. Here our politicians are berated for doing too little.

The following week we are faced with images of barbed wire and guns, as one nation attempts to limit the seemingly inexorable tide of desperate people. Politicians are censured for admitting too many.

One week, it seems there is a desire to rush to help; the next, excuses are found for why rescue is not the best solution.

Perhaps the apparent swings in sentiment are a reflection of a general sense of bewilderment? It is nigh on impossible to work out what on earth is going on and why, let alone contemplate a thoughtful response.

Christians have the perfect touchstone to refer to, in this, as in all matters: What would Christ want us to do? Fortunately we have his answer: ‘For even the son of man did not come to be served but to serve’ Mark 10: 45 ‘Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another’ John 13: 34 Please see page 14 for details of the response being orchestrated by the Diocese We are dedicating our Parish Walk, on October 3rd, to the brave refugees who have left all they know and once held dear, for the uncertainty of the unknown.

Of course our walk is not a reflection of theirs, we have a route, we have the guarantee of refreshment at each stop and warm homes to return to, but we can stop and pray for these people and lift this human tragedy to our Lord, as we share fellowship and appreciate our surroundings.

We are delighted that we will be joined by the Dean of Chelmsford, Nicholas Henshall, and members of the cathedral choir. We can anticipate some musical accompaniment along the way!

A study, by the London School of Economics, of almost 10,000 people over the age of 50, sought to discover what activities made people less likely to be depressed.

The study took place over a 4 year period and considered engagement with voluntary work, education, sports and social clubs and political and religious organisations.

Religious activity was the only activity that made a sustained positive difference to a person’s mental wellbeing.

The study concluded that the church plays a very important social role....

Halloween

The shops are full of things to get us thinking about Halloween; ghoulish masks, creepy costumes and all kinds of disgusting-looking party food.

We are all awaiting the knock at the door of the trick or treaters. Is this all innocent fun or are Halloween celebrations to be avoided? What are the origins of this strange time of year?

The history goes something like this. The ancient Celts had a festival called Samhain, which marked the end of summer. These ancient people 6

believed that the waning of the sun and the increasing darkness of winter meant that evil spirits could get up to much mischief on the earth. It is probable that they thought they could escape from this trickery by disguising themselves to look like evil spirits. They also used bonfires and magic rites to try to appease them. Later, the Romans took over this festival combining it with one of their own - a kind of fertility festival which honoured Pomona, the goddess of fruitful abundance. In the Middle Ages and beyond, a fear of the supernatural was common place.

People continued to use magic charms to ward off bad luck; there was much fear of witches and people continued to use animal costumes and frightening masks to ward off evil spirits. Today’s costume parties, trick or treating, pumpkin lanterns, haunted attractions, even apple bobbing, can be traced back to these complex origins.

From at least the fourth century AD, the Christian Church has invited people to celebrate the season differently. Many early martyrs went unrecorded and unhonoured, so the feast of ‘All Saints’ or ‘All Hallows’ was established. The early Christians no doubt chose 1st November for the feast date as an alternative celebration in order to focus on Christ's power over death and evil. The Church continues to use this season to think about the countless people who have gone before us as examples of goodness and blessing, rather than those who would do us harm. It became the custom to call the evening before the feast ‘All Hallows Eve’ which eventually became ‘Halloween’, the 31st October, yet it has maintained its link with the commemoration of the powers of darkness.

Whilst today’s Halloween parties can be, I’m sure, harmless fun, we should avoid falling into the trap of thinking that evil doesn’t exist. It does. Jesus was never naive about evil; he recognised its grip on some people’s lives and he confronted it, as in the case of Legion (Luke 8.2639). Many Christians prefer to use All Hallows Eve as a time to celebrate Christ’s victory over sin and death and God’s ultimate victory over all the powers of evil.

So called ‘Bright or Light parties’ for children are becoming increasingly popular, with their focus on the good rather than the scary things of life.

Whatever you are doing this Halloween, keep safe and don’t really frighten anybody!

House Martins Owners’ Club

Nobody can own house martins, but they can own you!

There are 3 colonies that we know about in Great Chishill, at Shirley Mannings’, John Murgatroyds’ and the Dibblees.

The population is in ‘steep decline’ (RSPB) due to weather changes and we hold our breath each spring - to see if they reappear. House martins, it is said, bring good luck and tend to return each year to the same nesting spot - under the eaves of your house. They’ll either make their own nest out of mud or inhabit an artificial nesting box you have kindly put up. Scouts seem to be sent in advance of the main migration, so a new nest stands a good chance of occupancy.

This is the time they migrate back to Africa and there is a huge flurry of activity round the nests, feeding up the young for the journey. You will see them early evening, swooping to catch flies to feed very noisy infants.

Sparrows are the house martins’ enemy, pushing out colonies and inhabiting nests but the RSPB has useful tips to repel them in favour of the original occupants.

Shirley Manning is the expert on house martin habits (although she no longer runs a ‘crisis care service’ for young that have fallen out of their nests) and any of us would be interested if there are further colonies in the parish. We find them remarkably good company!

Operation Christmas Child The shoe box scheme

As in the last two years we are again participating in the shoe box scheme to enable needy children in other parts of the world to receive a small box of gifts at Christmas. Last year the Parish very generously donated over 60 boxes and we have been encouraged to run the scheme again this year in the hope that this generosity will be repeated.

When you read this (and if deliveries run to time) in each church there will be a poster and a supply of explanatory leaflets. Leaflets will also be available from the Church Office or from Joy – 838545. The boxes when filled should be delivered to the Church Office or to 10 Fowlmere Road, Heydon by Sunday 8th November. This date allows time for the boxes to be delivered to the Regional Centre for checking before final dispatch to the chosen destination. The leaflets provide useful ideas as to suitable gifts and give clear indications as to the box size.

We have learned a few lessons from past efforts. Please note specifically the guidance given in the leaflets, particularly in regard to box size and content so before starting to fill individual boxes please obtain a copy of the leaflet. The content of each box will be checked at the Regional Centre to ensure that each child receives a comparable gift within the stated age limits and also that the contents fall within the guidelines. Knitted hats, scarves or gloves are particularly welcome.

A donation of ÂŁ3.00 per box is requested to cover transportation costs 10

and this can be given by way of cash, a cheque or a donation made on line for which a bar coded receipt will be given for inclusion in the box – details in the leaflet.

This year Joy and the church office have a supply of ready decorated boxes priced at 40p each.

Diocesan Refugee Appeal In 2015, there are 19.5 million refugees around the world, the greatest number in history, half are children. It seems such an enormous problem, beyond individuals to solve. Stephen our Bishop is determined that we can and should do something: ‘The Bible tells us that when we serve each other we serve Christ. The stranger in our midst, the person in need, is not only where we are most likely to encounter Christ, but also the person from whom we will receive from Christ today. Therefore to give without any expectation of getting anything back, save the joy of being blessed by service, is fundamental to the Christian life.

In the Diocese of Chelmsford we are convinced that as we respond in loving service and compassion to the vast humanitarian crisis in Syria so we have an opportunity to live out what we believe. We are appalled by the horrors and indignities of this conflict. We pray for peace and justice in our world.

But we also recognise that by our response to this situation we can be changed for the better. We also believe this can be true for our nation, shifting the way we understand and discern our priorities. We can’t do everything, but we can do something, and this ‘something’ can make a difference. It is our hope that the Church can be at the centre of our nation’s response.’

Our Diocese is organizing three things in particular: • making housing available • launching an appeal for funds • co-ordinating a group to work in partnership with other agencies to support the response.

We are encouraged to give generously, to pray for peace and to work together to welcome those who come to us in great need.

Letter from Whitehall The second week of September signalled the return to Westminster’s ways for South Cambridgeshire’s Heidi Allen as Parliament returned from its summer recess.

In the weeks leading up to the return, Heidi found herself walking the wards at Addenbrooke’s, on the beat with Cambridgeshire’s finest, out with paramedics as an Ambulance observer and settling down for a cup of tea with a truly amazing constituent.

Keen to experience the daily work of the staff at Addenbrooke’s hospital, Heidi visited on a number of occasions. She spent an afternoon with nurses on wards caring for the elderly and at the other end of the spectrum, joined consultants on a Friday evening in A&E and intensive care. A shift with paramedics helped Heidi to understand how the services interact and the conflicting pressures they face.

Friday 21st August was a night to remember for Heidi as she made the move from the wards to the cells, out and about with Cambridgeshire constabulary. Experiencing the custody suite at Parkside station towards the end of the shift Heidi had a window into the world that many of us fortunately never have to look through. Speaking afterwards, Heidi said “I was truly humbled by the work that our emergency services do. I saw things I never thought I would, and frankly I take my hat off to our police, paramedics, doctors and nurses. I couldn’t do what they do, and they deserve our utmost respect. Real life heroes; all I can say is thank you.”

On Friday 4th September a very special constituent of Heidi’s celebrated his 97th Birthday. Heidi had the pleasure of being invited to tea with the birthday boy himself, the remarkable Frank Burton.

One of only a handful of survivors from the first naval battle of WW2, Battle of the River Plate, Frank and Heidi enjoyed a cup of tea and a biscuit while Frank reminisced about his days in the navy and, more importantly, his prize winning vegetables.

Describing her meeting with Frank as one of the best parts of her job, an honour, and the least Heidi could do to say thank you for Frank’s kind messages before and after the election. continued on page 16

The first week back was also the chance for a first visit to Parliament for some of Heidi’s younger constituents. Pupils from Newton Community Primary School had the chance to go on a tour of the Houses of Parliament and meet Heidi. Who knows, some might return as MPs one day!

The Scamming Epidemic

A scam is a fraudulent scheme. Scamming is taking place on an increasing scale, with telephone callers claiming to be from banks, computer companies and the Police.

A scammer may: • Contact you out of the blue • Make promises that sound too good to be true - if something sounds too good to be true it probably is • Ask you to pay for something up-front - for example, they'll ask you to pay a fee before you can claim a prize • Ask you to make a quick decision by saying things like ‘if you don’t act now you’ll miss out’. This puts you under pressure and doesn’t give you time to think • Be over-familiar and over-friendly with you • Tell you an offer has to be kept secret • Ask for your bank account details. Never give your bank details to people you don’t know, especially people you meet online • Give a mobile number or PO Box number as the contact for their company- these are easy to close and difficult to trace. It may be a sign that the company doesn’t exist or isn't legitimate. Check out the company's details with Companies House or look on the Internet for more details about them.

If you are a recipient of this type of contact, do not do what they are asking you to do – if they want your credit or debit card, pin number, access into your computer, any personal details please do not give it to them.

Remember, when you are contacted out of the blue, be suspicious and think:

Please let your friends and neighbours know that this type of crime is increasing.

Many of the callers are extremely plausible. They might even know your name and address. Please remember – they want your money, and they will say anything to get it.

• Just say ‘no thanks’ to persuasive sales patter • Never give out your bank details unless you are certain you can trust the person contacting you • Take your time – resist pressure to make a decision straight away • Never send money to someone you don’t know • Walk away from job ads that ask for money in advance.

Local Hero

Emily Pyle, from Elmdon, is busy raising funds for charities in Zanzibar and would really welcome local support.

During a visit to the country the 17-year-old pupil, from Saffron Walden County High, will be working with 12 local charities. She has volunteered to work on an environmental protection scheme on Zanzibar Island in 2016. The work will focus on four marine and forest charities and collecting data on critically endangered species.

She has organized a fashion show and charity shopping evening to raise funds for these charities on Friday 9th October, 7pm at Chrishall School. Tickets £6 from Emily 838651 / emilylpyle@gmail.com. Notes Parish Walk 3rd October This year we are trying a NEW ROUTE. We will start and finish at Chrishall Church. It will be possible to join in half way round by parking at Chrishall and walking across to Chiswick Hall. Of course, walkers are welcome to join in at any point. 2015 Tennis Tournament 50 players took part in our seventh annual Tennis Tournament in glorious weather on 9th August.

The event raised a record £1500 for Parish funds. Big thanks to John and Carolyn Hughes, Edward and Mel Chandler, Robert Smith and Claire Brackley, Alex and Emmah Duffus and Christopher and Antonia Tregoning for lending their courts for the qualifying rounds.

The finals were once again played at Little Chishill Manor, thanks to Peter and Gill Lyster, and a wonderful tea was provided there
