Since I graduated from the Royal Academy of Arnhem in 1997, having studied both fashion, photography and fine art, I have been combining my own artistic work with freelance assignments as a fashion photographer. In 2002, and with increasing frequency during the years that followed, I travelled back and forth between the Netherlands and Africa bringing back images from South, East, and West Africa. Throughout the corpus constituted by both this independent and commissioned work, one prominent dimension appears: my concern for the issue of the representation of Otherness – whether in terms of gender, ethnicity or physical ability.

The work Vom Bleiben (“What Remains”) captures the moment when the night at the techno club has come to an end and the visitors have left. The moment the lights go up revealing the traces of the night. As soon as the last person has left and before the cleaners arrive to clear the battlefield, we start photographing the actual situation and atmosphere. The clearing-up phase, before everything is cleaned and back in its place, passes quickly and the exposure time of the photographs corresponds to the real time of that moment. Our intention is to document the often temporary existence of techno clubs over an extended period of time.

Alphabet Truck is a photographic tableau made up of letters collected from the backs of trucks. It started, more or less incidentally, with an “N” and several months later turned into an obsession to complete the alphabet. A work by John Baldessari, which I had admired a lot, became a major inspiration here: “The back of all the trucks passed while driving from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara.” All the photographs were taken on French motorways, especially in the north of the country, covering some 40,000 kilometers. Comparing this effort with the relatively modest outcome, this project was certainly a crazy adventure.

My work investigates what constitutes the concept of home, as an immigrant who chose to live in New York. Tangibility versus intangibility are touched upon. How do we assess or assume what home is? My relocation to New York is not about overcoming a culture that is distinct, but encountering and understanding cultural disparity and similarity. Living in NYC highlights the intangible aspects of cultures today, including language, myth, mindsets, everyday customs, social class issues, and identity. I present positions relating to customs, holidays, architecture, dress, food, location, and home design as a means to explore how culture becomes intermixed or remains unchanged at a microcosmic level, and how national identity and sensibility are maintained or relinquished through living a cross-cultural city life.

The more understanding of cultural contrasts I have, the more I feel closer to the U.S., and so my space in New York is being psychologically expanded. I am also working with an expanding group of subjects to further the discussion in groups of other racial, age and socioeconomic groups to gather more inclusive information.

Betel Nut Beauties is a mini-series captured during a year-long round-the-world trip my husband and I took between 2007 and 2008. While traveling in Taiwan, it is hard not to notice the brightly lit, single room storefronts inviting you in on almost every street. These often ramshackle huts sell a mild stimulant made from the nut of the areca palm and wrapped in betel leaves. Known across South Asia as paan, it is generally translated as “betel nut” in English. Staffed almost exclusively by young women, the stands cater to long-haul truck drivers and, like taxi dancers or cigarette girls in casinos, the betel nut girls are encouraged to dress in skimpy clothes to lure in male customers. The colorful shops, with their scantily clad employees, make for a startling contrast against Taiwan’s often drab urban landscape. These are glass and neon jewels, beckoning the customer with the high of not only the betel nut, but of the interaction with the betel nut girls.

My educational background is the Soviet Russian avant-garde school of Futurism, which I combine with a nomadic aesthetic of post-Soviet, contem­porary Kazakhstan – something that I have been exploring in recent years through my photographic and video work. I use specific modes of expression in modern and contemporary art as a vehicle to investigate my personal archaic atavism as a particular mystical anthropomorphism. In other words, I explore the nature of a shared cultural psychic experience, which manifests itself as a specific thought-form among the people(s) of the ancient, arid and dusty steppes between the Caspian Sea, Baikonur and Altai in today’s Kazakhstan. With my project, Transoxiana Dreams, I address the social, economic and ecological situation of what is locally called the Aralkum generation, the peoples living in the vast region of the Aral Sea which is rapidly receding due to Soviet Union irrigation policies in the 1960’s, between post-Soviet Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Southwestern Kazakhstan. I portray the inhabitants of a formerly thriving area with tourism, beaches and fishing fleets, now living in a constantly growing salt desert in a desolate and polluted landscape through the eyes of a fisherman’s daughter and of strange and seductive four-legged centaur-like female creatures.

The light of the sun is the basis not only of life on earth, but also of the medium of photography. A photographic image, in the original sense, is a reproduction of reflected sunlight. The photographs that make up the project presented here, 1h, depict the light of the sun directly, without this being immediately evident. By registering the apparent course of the sun they also depict the passing of time, without this being immediately comprehensible. These images show a reality which can only be perceived by the classical means of photography, which in turn raises one of the essential question of that medium, namely, that of the depictability of reality.

Sie besucht sie zu Hause und wird hineingezogen in ihre rituelle Welt – und ihre Pein: die hasserfüllte Stimme einer jungen Frau, die sie unaufhörlich anschreit: „Ich bin du, ich bin du, ich bin du!“ Aus der bizarren Beziehung zwischen Fotografin und fremder Frau entstanden eine Buchidee und ein Dummy, komponiert aus eigenen Bildern und Schnappschüssen vergangener Zeiten, gebunden in der Technik des Altarfalzes, die es erlaubt, die Seiten des rechten und linken Buchblocks beliebig miteinander zu kombinieren. Das Projekt gewann den diesjährigen Dummy Award des 4. Internationalen FotobuchFestivals in Kassel. Es überzeugte die Jury nicht nur wegen der ebenso eloquent wie rätselhaft inszenierten Geschichte dieser fremden Frau, sondern auch wegen der außergewöhnlichen Buchgestaltung. Die Fotografin heißt Milou Abel, die fremde Frau bleibt namenlos.

The photographer meets the unknown woman on the street, over and over again. She senses the woman’s intensity.

Eventually, the photographer asks her if it would be possible to take her photograph. When she visits her home, she is drawn into a world of rituals – and torments: the voice of a young woman full of hatred, who never stops screaming, “I am you, I am you, I am you!” The weird encounter between the photographer and the strange woman gave rise to a book concept and a dummy, composed of her own images and snapshots from past times, using a double gate fold technique to allow the right and left-hand sides of the book to be combined with each other at will. The project won this year’s Dummy Award at the 4th International Photobook Festival in Kassel. It convinced the jury not only because of the eloquent and enigmatic rendering of the story of this peculiar woman, but also because of the extra­ ordinary design of the book. The photographer’s name is Milou Abel while the strange woman remains anonymous.
