CAMPOS DEL MUNDO

AROUND THE WORLD THE OLD COURSE

A Championship Course The Open Championship (also known as the British Open) was first played on the Old Course at St Andrews in 1873 (13 years after the first edition) and the most recent championship was in 2015. St Andrews has held the event more often (29 times) than any other course. This year it will be played in Northern Ireland (Royal Portrush, in the small town of the same name, in the north of the country, where the championship was previously held in 1951). Despite the fact that, since 1990, the Open has been played every five years at the Old Course, this will not be the case for the next edition, which will have to wait until 2021. The reason is that the British Open being held that year is its 150th edition, and the iconic Old Course in St. Andrews has been given the honour of hosting it.

clubhouse, the Eden Clubhouse, for golfers on the Eden, Strathtyrum and Balgove Courses, creating the largest public golf complex in the world. With demand to play on the Links continuing to rise, a seventh course is in preparation by the Trust. DIRECTION OF PLAY When Old Tom Morris created a separate green for the first hole, it became possible to play the course in an anti-clockwise direction, rather than clockwise, which had previously been the norm. For many years, the course was played clockwise and anti-clockwise on alternate weeks, but now the anti-clockwise, or right-hand, circuit has become the accepted direction. Many of the course’s 112 bunkers, however, are clearly designed to catch the wayward shots of golfers playing the course on the left-hand circuit. THE MOST INFERNAL BUNKER The sands of the deep Hell Bunker, on the 14th hole, have witnessed numerous shipwrecks.Virtually all have suffered, even greats such as Jack Nicklaus who, during the 2000 British Open, landed in the bunker and ended up with a 10 on the 530-yard par-five.

THE MOST ICONIC GOLF BRIDGE On the fairway of the 18th, a 357yard par-four dedicated to Tom Morris (both father and son who between them won seven of the first 10 Opens, from 1860 to 1870) is the iconic Swilcan Bridge. and the Valley of Sin in front of the green. This hole was chosen as the best in Scotland in a vote of 3,000 golfers organised by the Visit Scotland website.
