Welcome from Fr Abbot

My first word is welcome. This sounds so simple to say and perhaps so obvious, but you are welcome to Ampleforth Abbey for a very special reason. The reason is this, in welcoming you we welcome Christ. Our visitors and guests are so important to us because each encounter is an opportunity to meet Jesus in person. The monastic community has one simple desire, to point others to God’s presence in our world. We do this through our prayer and in our hospitality. We invite you, therefore, to come and join us in this faith-filled adventure.

We are a community of faith and we recognise that many are searching for meaning and purpose in life. We can all become overwhelmed by the difficulties and questions that life throws up. Hence, we invite you to come and take time to stop, look and listen. To find, in the silence, the beautiful environment, the liturgy with the monks and the friendship made with other guests, the medicine you need for your soul. We have tried to provide you with food for the journey and we would like you to come and taste the goodness of God.

We are very fortunate to have a beautiful, newly refurbished guest house, The Grange, and a caring and sensitive group of people who work in hospitality.  Soon we will have a new venture in Alban Roe House which at present is being renovated with the help of generous donors. Here there will be a Visitor Centre, Tea Room, Gift Shop and space for school groups. We have been blessed and we want to share this blessing with others. It is therefore my privilege, as Abbot, to invite you to consider coming and finding time to explore your journey in faith. Come and experience the hospitality and welcome that is at the heart of the Gospel and the Rule of St Benedict. I look forward to seeing you when you come.

What is a Retreat?

The word ‘retreat’ suggests taking a step back, and it is this process of taking a look at life from a new perspective which is what makes coming away on a retreat so powerful.

A retreat at Ampleforth Abbey offers the chance to reflect on and progress your spiritual journey whilst resting in our comfortable retreat centre. You don’t have to be Catholic or even a Christian to join us here, to benefit from the chance to discover who you really are and what you’d like your life to mean. We welcome anyone seeking a meaningful encounter in the peaceful setting of our working monastery.

If you’re looking for the chance to connect with a community of like-minded others as you explore your faith and gain a deeper understanding of yourself in turn, you might choose to join one of our guided retreats. These are each centred on a different topic and led by either an Ampleforth monk or one of our knowledgeable retreat leaders.

Topics range from those which offer tools towards living a calmer or more Christian life; perhaps through the lens of a piece of scripture, or methods such as Christian meditation or Lectio Divina.

In the pages following, you can also read about coming to Ampleforth Abbey as an individual, for space and respite, or as part of a pre-formed group, looking to develop your bond of faith.

Whatever you choose, a retreat here offers the chance to learn more about yourself and return to your day-to-day life refreshed and renewed.

The Retreat Centre

The Ampleforth Retreat Centre is made up of four retreat houses. These are The Grange, Archway, Guest House and Alban Roe House – which is currently closed for refurbishment – all located in the picturesque surroundings of the Abbey Church.

The Grange is our largest building, offering 16 twin, double and single en-suite bedrooms including one accessible bedroom for those with mobility requirements. Extensively renovated just last year, The Grange’s modern rooms have a warm and homely feel. The Grange is also home to two bright meeting rooms, where the majority of our group and guided retreats are hosted, has its own chapel and top-floor library which offer space for reflection and prayer. There’s also space to socialise and enjoy drinks and snacks in the kitchen. All guests are welcome to use these areas.

monastic community’s worship in the Abbey Church. You’re also welcome to explore our extensive grounds, taking walks on one of many public footpaths in the foothills of the North York Moors. Each day meals are prepared by our chefs and served in the Guest Refectory (the Newman Room), near the Abbey Church.

Archway and Guest House together offer 13 twin and single bedrooms, with a choice of either traditional en-suite or shared bathrooms. Rooms are simple and comfortable presenting a quiet and peaceful place to rest. A further meeting room, kitchenette and sitting room are available in the Guest House.

All our guests are welcome to get a greater sense of what life is like in our living, working Abbey, through sharing in the

Friday 19 - Sunday 21 May

En-suite £180.00 Standard £160.00

The title of this retreat is taken from the words of a song by the band Coldplay called Fix You. They echo a hunger deep within all of us – to come home in the fullest sense possible. They also echo Christ’s promise to us: “Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12).

Living from 1856 to 1916, he was at various points an aristocrat, a soldier and an explorer before he found his faith and decided to live a life of poverty in the desert.

He has been called a saint for sinners and continues to inspire men and women today on their spiritual journey.

In this retreat we will explore aspects of his spirituality which can be lived out by anyone seeking to deepen their discipleship of Jesus of Nazareth, the friend of sinners.

This retreat focuses on opening ourselves to that light, letting it guide us home and bring us a peace the world cannot give.

Finding God in the everyday is a good way of summing up the theme of this retreat.

Society encourages us to keep looking for the exciting things in life, inviting us to escape the mundane, dreariness of life. But what if we could find God in the ordinary things of life?

The wisdom of St Benedict and many others teaches us that our eyes need to be open to God’s presence in all things, even the least exciting aspects of life. It is no accident that the longest period of the Church’s liturgical year is called Ordinary Time!

Come along and find the richness of God in those everyday moments of life.

Tuesday 29 August - Sunday 3 September

This retreat hopes to offer you a taste of that life, to live for a short while according to a different rhythm. There is space to live alongside the monastic community and other fellow pilgrims, to walk, to read, to be in silence, to pray alone and with the monastic community, to discuss and share, to allow yourself to be fed by the beauty of the world around you.

Each day a different member of the community will offer food for reflection - aspects of St Benedict’s wisdom that might help to enrich your life. This retreat offers the opportunity to step back for a short while and leave renewed, able to re-engage with your life with fresh energy and wisdom.

Pope John Paul II, in October 1978 chosen as Bishop of Rome “from a country far…far away, but always so close for communion in faith and the Christian tradition” Pope Benedict XVI, who succeeded him in April 2005, “a simple and humble labourer in the vineyard of the Lord”; and Pope Francis, when in March 2013 the Cardinals “[went] to the ends of the earth to get Rome a Bishop”.

Liam Kelly is an acclaimed author whose works include ‘Sacraments Revisited’, ‘The Glorious Journey’ (a book of reflections based on the film The Two Popes) and most recently, ‘Lent in 50 Moments’. He was also editor of ‘Seven Last Words’ by the late Cardinal Basil Hume.

Ampleforth provides a breath-taking setting of great natural beauty, shaped over many years by the life and worship of a Benedictine Monastic community. These days, too, offer a blend of spiritual and practical wisdom.

The retreat is supported by two business leaders, Paul Devlin and Ian Helps, experts in their field, who have embraced this understanding and found success and self-fulfilment within senior industry roles.

En-suite £270.00 Standard £240.00

Through this weekend retreat, Fr Bede leads us through a process of discovering the essence of faith in religious art. You’ll be introduced to two paintings, with a session on each. Together, through discussion and interpretation, we hope to bring these pieces of art to life again, weaving the initial gospel story with the faith life and homily of the artist. Gradually we hope to see our own ongoing faith and life story emerging in our conclusions in a final summary session.

The Art of Listening

Friday 27 - Sunday 29 October

En-suite £180.00 Standard £160.00

God can do so much more when we learn to listen to Him, to discern his voice, to that “still small voice of calm” which is so powerful and can do so much more than we can begin to imagine.

In this retreat we explore the art of listening.

You’ll be encouraged to share your personal interpretation of the works alongside other fellow disciples from all walks of life, learning from each other’s contributions in a space where all opinions are valid and valued. You’ll leave the experience feeling lighter, more insightful and part of a new community.

Media and the Church: How to Read the News Without

Losing Your faith

Friday 3 - Sunday 5 November

En-suite £180.00 Standard £160.00

Lord Northcliffe (1865-1922), pioneer of popular journalism, owner of the Daily Mail and the Daily Mirror, once said: “News is what somebody somewhere doesn’t want you to know; the rest is all advertising”. “Go out to the whole world”, said Jesus, “and proclaim the Good News”.

Eleven national daily newspapers and over 450 TV channels available in the UK provide a vast choice for the reader and viewer, and that’s before you venture into social media.

Monastic Experience Retreat

Wednesday 8 - Monday 13 November

En-suite £450.00 Standard £400.00

During this short stay, you’ll have the chance to live the life of monk yourself for a short while, according to an ancient rhythm designed to balance our needs and nourish our truest selves.

You’ll enjoy the opportunity to step back for a short time, to read, to pray or to be in silence as well as discuss and share with like-minded others. Whether you’re new to this experience or have joined us for it before, you’ll leave renewed and able to re-engage with your life with fresh energy, enthusiasm and wisdom.

So in the world of infotainment and shareable content, social trending and fake news, how can you sort out the good, the bad and the ugly? More importantly, how do keep your faith?

“ Wonderful to get to know the Community better and to experience for a few days a beautiful rhythm of life”

Liam Kelly is an acclaimed author and editor, has been involved in church communications for more than 40 years, including work at Vatican Radio and with the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.
