Humble and Loving Doris Johnson and Her Family—Part 1 Doris Johnson died a week before Christmas. Mother Growing of friend Ralph up in and wife of jewelAmery er J.P., Loren Elkin the meek and reclusive Ameryite quietly slipped away. The Johnsons were an important part of my early Amery years. Combining that with her resemblance to Timmy’s mom on Lassie, she made a noticeable impression on me.

Their house across the street from First Lutheran appeared darkened with overgrown vegetation, a residence cloaked in mystery. She didn’t come out a lot, but she’d attend the Our Savior’s Christmas program as well as Ralph’s confirmation ceremony. When I stopped to pick up Ralph or occasionally play there, Doris was outgoing, cordial, and much like Timmy’s mom acted on TV. Not shy in her own home, she made me feel comfortable and welcome. Ralph and I played sports together, camped

on Mystery Island on South Twin, attended WAPPO Bible Camp, and took part in church youth activities like Luther League. In fact at a Luther League meal after a sliding party, he was the one who taught me about the pepper grinder. I had no idea, and he told me to just twist and something will happen. Meanwhile the pile of ground pepper on my plate grew before I realized it; he won that round. A top notch athlete in all sports he played, he’d be the first choice when picking sides for anything athletic. Once I stood behind home plate backstop to watch him at bat in a summer league baseball game. He measured the pitch coming in, swung half or three quarter speed, and knocked the ball ten feet above the 2nd baseman for a perfect single. It was almost like he had that scooper used in jai-alai, throwing it to the perfect spot. His mom Doris died in Eau Claire, living there with the help of her son Brian. “She will be missed by her family and all who knew her.” (obituary, Amery Free Press) “She was a woman of faith and we rejoice to know she lives in freedom and beauty now.” Next week, more on her background and birth city in North Dakota, a trip I took with the Johnson men to Minneapolis, and Ralph’s disappearance after high school. Please email Loren with any memories of Doris and/or her family at elkfarm@wctc.net.
