Welcome to the 2025 Isanti and Chisago Counties Information Guide produced by NorthStar Media. Inside, you will find sources to help navigate throughout Isanti and Chisago Counties and its towns.
Welcome to CAMBRIDGE
We are Minnesota’s “Opportunity City.” We hope that while you are here, you take the opportunity to visit with our friendly people. We have many opportunities throughout the year for you to do so. In November we have our annual Snowflake Parade and tree lighting ceremony where we enjoy hot chocolate and singing carols around a 40 foot fully decorated pine tree. Events like this make Cambridge a decent sized city with a “small town feel.”
We strive to build a connected and healthy community by hosting many other civic events as well. For example we celebrate the third Thursday of each summer month with downtown concerts, sidewalk sales, pop-up splash pads for the kids, outdoor dining options, and so much more. In September, we host our annual Customer Appreciation day and classic car show. During the coldest days of winter, we hold our Winterfest. Our parks offer concerts and organized kids activities as well as their natural beauty and amenities.
Cambridge is conveniently close to the Twin Cities, but still enjoys the advantages and beauty of a more rural
HISTORY OF ISANTI COUNTY
The very name of Isanti County comes from the original inhabitants of this land -- the Isányáthi or Santee Dakhota. The name means “knife” or “knife-makers.”
The Upper Council of the Dakhota, four of the Oceti Sakowin or Seven Council Fires, comprise the Santee Dakhota.
One of Isanti County’s natural treasures, known to the Dakhota as Watpa Wakan, or Spirit River, was harmfully mistranslated as Rum River. Watpa Wakan flows 154 miles from what is widely known as Lake Mille Lacs, but which the Dakhota call Mde Wakan -- Spirit Lake. The river connects with the Mississippi River in Anoka. Calls to officially rename the river have thus far been unsuccessful, but many modern admirers of the river call it Watpa Wakan.
setting. We encourage you to visit our expanding offerings of dining, entertainment, and shopping around our friendly city. Numerous new housing projects are underway and will provide a wide variety of living options for those choosing to settle here. We are the county seat of government and offer many of the legal and civic services that are needed from time to time. Our schools and community college partner with public and private entities to make education here a high priority and our public and private schools are highly regarded and supported. The City Council is preparing to build a new regional park and beach on the shores of Lake Fanny, which is one of many large projects looking to improve the quality of life for all of our residents. I have heard many stories over the years of people who came to Cambridge for “just a short time,” but who ulti- mately decided to make it their permanent home. This very thing happened to me! We truly hope you enjoy your time in Cambridge and I believe that, one day, we may be able to count you as a friend and neighbor as well.
Isanti County was incorporated on February 13, 1857, the year before Minnesota became a state. In the 1860 census, the county was home to 242 voters, 41 of whom had been born in Sweden, according to “Isanti County: Yesterday…Today…Tomorrow” by Marilyn McGriff.
The largest municipalities, Cambridge and Isanti, were incorporated in 1869 and 1872, respectively.
During this time, Indigenous people still used the area for hunting and other natural resources, according to Sam Klocksien of the Isanti County Historical Society’s 2021 article “Repeating History: Area waterways were popular to settlers, Native Americans.”

that now span it. While early settlers practiced subsistence farming, the county gradually cycled through potato farming in the late 1800s to dairy farming in the early 1900s. Now the majority of farms grow cash crops, including soybeans and corn.
An early challenge for the community during the potato era was a lack of a railroad through the town, McGriff writes. Local businesses would accept farm produce in trade for goods. Things became easier when a potato starch factory opened in Cambridge in 1893, lessening the trek to market crops.
Finally, in 1899, the first freight train came through Cambridge.
Sadly, blight and soil depletion caused potato production to decline. By the 1920s, most farms were dairy farms. That industry was heavily influenced by Isanti County’s co-operative movement, called at the time the best in the state. Electricity came to rural areas of the county in the late 1930s, changing the dairy farming industry with milking machines.
Changes in the dairy industry meant many farmers chose or were forced to go out of business. With a tractor
and farm implement dealer expanding into Cambridge in 1947, crop farming gained popularity.
The 69 school districts of the past, comprised largely of rural one- or two-room schoolhouses, have condensed into two, and traveling doctors and nurses have given way to a large medical center and hospital in Cambridge.

Isanti County sent 14 fighters to the Civil War and six to the Spanish-American War. Anti-immigrant sentiment was a feature of World War I against German and Swedish immigrants, though 440 draftees and many enlistees from Isanti County participated in the war. Come World War II, women were among the more than 700 troops. Hundreds more were deployed to Korea and Vietnam.

Welcome to NORTH BRANCH
North Branch the Beautiful
As the Mayor of North Branch, I want to welcome you to the city that symbolizes the best of what it means to be a cozy, countryside community. We have a historic downtown business district that continues to evolve over time, complimented by a robust Central Park that sits within the ‘shadows’ of several large silos that point to the prominent history of farming in our area. Driving down our Main Street in the summer means big, beautiful flower baskets hanging from the streetlight posts, along with USA flags galore; while winter gives us views of a street lined with bright, festive holiday lights. We are a very proud and patriotic community!
One of the great things about living in North Branch is our ever-evolving park system (22 sites and growing), along with more than 30 miles of trails and sidewalks, with connection to another 24 miles of the Sunrise Prairie Regional Trail that runs parallel with the historic Old Highway 61. We have a newly remodeled skate park, 21-hole disc golf course, as well as a resident-shared community garden. To top it off, we have weekly outdoor “Concerts in the Park” held right in the heart of our city, in our cozy Central Park.
HISTORY OF CHISAGO COUNTY
Indigenous people, including the Dakhota and Ojibwe, have lived in the area we call Chisago County for thousands of years. While the Ojibwe migrated approximately 1,500 years ago, the Dakhota believe humanity was created at Bdote, the site where the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers meet. The Indigenous people of the area used the St. Croix River for trade and travel for years before the fur trade began with French settlers in the 1600s. For approximately 200 years, Indigenous people exchanged furs for manufactured and other goods from the French.
As the fur trade declined into the 1830s, Indigenous nations had to cede land in order to pay off alleged debts from fur traders as a “matter of survival,” according to the Minnesota Historical Society.
Schieber North Branch Mayor
With North Branch being such a family-oriented community, I am very proud of the effort, success, and evolution of our schools to become places where children can learn and grow according to their needs. Through innovative efforts over the past several years, our very passionate educators, and programs, provide the type of flexible support which allows each child to truly find success that fits them. It also shows as you walk through our various schools, as our facilities are second to none, and it is obvious that our students are thriving.
If I could sum up what it means to live in North Branch, it would be that we are in the center of everything! We have access to several lakes (many with high quality fishing), bike and hiking trails, ATV; snowmobile trails, beautiful country roads for riding motorcycles, a downhill ski resort, and the St Croix River; all within 30 minutes. Many are drawn to our community for the beauty of the outdoors and the endless possibilities it presents. This really is a wonderful place to call home!
Treaties signed in 1837 officially cede local land to the United States government. However, the Ojibwe’s rights to hunt, fish and gather on these lands was never ceded. Chisago County was officially established in 1851 -- seven years before Minnesota was established as a state.
The name Chisago is often said by non-natives to derive from an Indigenous phrase, Ki Chi Saga, which is said to mean “fair and lovely lakes.” However, a search of Indigenous sources including the online Ojibwe People’s Dictionary, lists no such words. It seems most likely that Chisago comes from the Ojibwe words for large or great -- gichi -- and lake -- zaaga’igan.

When the county was first organized, it included parts of what is now Pine, Carlton and Kanabec Counties, being reduced to its current borders in 1860. Its first commissioners were Samuel Thompson, Y.F. Moreton and N.C.D. Taylor. They were elected in 1851 with 23 votes cast, and met for the first time on January 5, 1852 at Thompson’s house.
The founders initially set the county seat in Taylors Falls, but after years of contentious political battles, it was moved to Chisago City in 1865 and finally Center City in 1875, where it remains. The courthouse, built in 1876 in Center City, remained there until 1990, when it was moved to its current location in Almelund and now serves as a historical site.
Settlers began to build sawmills along the St. Croix River, the county’s Eastern border, in the 1880s, allowing the timber trade to boom in the 20th century. Barrel staves were one common export of the area, according to the Chisago County Heritage Association.
Farming has also been a staple of the local economy, particularly after the logging industry decimated many local forests. Farms grew potatoes, grain and livestock.
Farming is still the primary land use in the county, according to the 2017 Chisago County Comprehensive Plan.
In 1870, the first railroad came through Chisago County. Beginning in the 1880s, the area became a tourist destination, as it remains today.
The St. Croix River, known to the Ojibwe by three different names based on location, has remained a fixture of the economy, from Indigenous travel and trade to the fur trade, from logging to tourism.
Wild River State Park offers visitors a chance to experience the natural beauty of western Chisago County, while the chain of lakes surrounding Chisago City, Center City and Lindstrom provide another way to enjoy the water and all the life surrounding it.
In the mid-1900s, Swedish settlement of the area was memorialized in four books by Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg. The series, known as “The Emigrants,” is considered an important work of Swedish literature. A yearly festival, Karl Oskar Days in Lindstrom, gets its name from one of the series’ main characters.

CITY OF BRAHAM
The land now known as Braham was traditionally cared for by the Dakhota and, later, the Ojibwe people.
The City of Braham was founded in 1899. Settlers and business owners came in on the railroad and set up in Braham, which was named by railroad officials.
Also in 1899, the first Christian church and the Tremont Hotel were built. Not 10 years later, in 1908, the hotel burned to the ground, and was followed by another massive fire that destroyed nine buildings and 15 businesses.
In the 1930s and 40s, Braham became a popular stop for Twin Cities residents heading north to cabins and lake houses in the summer. Travelers stopped at the Park Cafe for pie. Governor Rudy Perpich declared Braham the Homemade Pie Capital of Minnesota in 1990. In July of that year, the Pie Day festival began, which continues to this day and has expanded from a small social to include art shows, a car show, pie baking and eating contests and more.

CITY OF RUSH CITY
The land now known as Rush City was traditionally cared for by the Dakhota and, later, the Ojibwe people. The bulrush plant (also known as a cattail), for which the city is named, was used by the Ojibwe people.
Rush City was incorporated on March 8, 1873. The historic Grant House Hotel was built in 1880 and burned down in 1895. A brick replacement was built the next year, and still stands and serves guests today.
A railroad line known as “The Blueberry Special” used to bring Wisconsinites over the St. Croix River to Rush City’s downtown for weekly shopping, after which they would stop and pick blueberries on the ride home.
The city plays host to the annual Chisago County Fair and has a 4,400 paved runway at its Rush City Regional Airport.

Snapshots of the
CITY OF ISANTI
The land now known as Isanti was traditionally cared for by the Dakhota and Ojibwe people. The word “Isanti” refers to the four nations in the Oceti Sakowin (or Seven Council Fires) that call themselves Dakhota and live in Mni Sota Makoce (Minnesota). Sometimes called the “Santee Dakhota,” the original Dakhota word, Isányáthi, means “knife makers.”
The city of Isanti was founded in the mid-1800s about three miles north of its present location. Now known as “Old Isanti,” it was a popular crossing point of the busy Manomin Trail, according to Sam Klocksien, executive director of the Isanti County Historical Society in his 2021 article “Repeating History: Highway 65 has significant historical origins.” Lumberjacks heading up to work in the winter went by the crossroads, and new immigrants arriving at nearby railroad stations
would have passed, too. As Cambridge’s commerce offerings increased and the railroad just missed Old Isanti, the community was moved to its present location in 1899.
Isanti’s first school was built in 1863. Many years and many district changes and new buildings later, Isanti schools consolidated with Cambridge’s in 1960.
As for crops, potatoes dominated Isanti agriculture as in neighboring areas, but the city also grew and processed navy beans, according to Marlys Wickstrom and R. W. Dutch Schoenecker in “Preserving a Sense of Heritage: Isanti, Minnesota Centennial 1899-1999.” The city also boasted its own successful creamery for many years, in addition to a feed mill.
