A Year in Review 2022 ANNUAL REPORT

A Letter from AMC Leadership

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As leaders of the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, we want to recognize our remarkable staff for the hospital’s success in 2022. In a year of unprecedented demand for veterinary care and disruption due to our renovation and expansion, the individuals who kept the hospital running 24 hours a day, seven days a week rose to the occasion, always prioritizing the health and well-being of our patients. We are in awe of their dedication.

We are also overwhelmed by – and grateful for – the generous support of our donors, whose continued belief in our mission inspires us to uphold our legacy. Our annual report shares our great work and recognizes the individuals and organizations whose contributions make that work possible.

In 2022, we are proud to have:

• accommodated over 54,000 patient visits with collaborative and world-class care;

• added eight new senior staff doctors to address an increasing patient population;

• provided over $4.4 million in free or subsidized care;

• welcomed our 59th class of interns and residents; and

• published more than 25 peer-reviewed research studies by AMC veterinarians.

Our accomplishments in 2022 also included significant steps forward in our construction project. This year we:

• reopened our fully renovated Radiation Oncology Suite, featuring a world-class linear accelerator to provide faster and more precise treatments;

• began work on the Denise and Michael Kellen Institute for Surgical Care, which will include five state-of-the-art operating rooms;

• passed the halfway mark for construction progress, remaining on schedule for completion in 2024;

• kept the hospital open and services operational throughout the ongoing work.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and staff of the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, we invite you to learn more about these and our other accomplishments in the pages that follow. Importantly, we thank our supporters whose contributions in 2022 enabled us to raise $11 million to fund our non-profit mission, while also helping us reach our $100 million goal for the Gift of Love campaign. We are humbled by your partnership in our endeavors and grateful for your ongoing support.

With Gratitude,

Our Hospital

Founded in 1910, the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC) is a non-profit academic veterinary hospital dedicated to providing collaborative and world-class care to animals and to leading the advancement of veterinary medicine through clinical research and education. AMC has a clinical staff of 369, including over 100 veterinarians, whose combined expertise covers more than 20 specialties and services. Housed in the Elmer and Mamdouha Bobst Hospital on East 62nd Street in New York City and open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, AMC is the largest and busiest non-profit veterinary hospital in the United States, with an extraordinary volume and diversity of medical cases. In 2022, the Animal Medical Center recorded 54,281 patient visits.

In 2022, AMC appointed eight new senior staff members to meet the ever-increasing demand for its services:

• Abigail Thomson, DVM, DACVIM (Internal Medicine), was appointed Senior Veterinarian, Specialist in Internal Medicine.

• Samantha Kochie, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Cardiology), was appointed Senior Veterinarian, Specialist in Cardiology.

• Carl Toborowsky, VMD, MA, MS, DACVIM (Cardiology), was appointed Senior Veterinarian, Specialist in Cardiology.

• Jonathan Ferrari, VMD, DACVS (SA), ACVS Fellow, Surgical Oncology, was appointed Senior Veterinarian, Specialist in Surgery.

• Andrea Chivers, DVM, was appointed Senior Veterinarian in Anesthesia and Pain Management.

• Daniel Cimino, DVM, DACVIM, was appointed Senior Veterinarian, Specialist in Neurology.

• Eunbee Kim, DVM, was appointed Senior Veterinarian in Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology.

• Christine Choe, DVM, was appointed Senior Veterinarian in Primary Care.

The Cancer Institute

“AMC’s new linear accelerator has a built-in CT scanner, which allows our team to verify that the patient’s tumor shape and position exactly matches the computergenerated plan for every single treatment. The treatment table can adjust itself with millimeter accuracy, which is critical when treating brain, heart, nasal, and bladder tumors where surrounding, noncancerous tissue is delicate.”

The Cancer Institute founded in 2015 with a gift from Elaine and Kenneth Langone, is modeled after the most progressive, patientcentered human cancer hospitals in the country. It encompasses three services: Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, and Surgical Oncology.

The Institute takes an integrative and centralized approach to patient care, utilizing the most innovative treatments to prevent, diagnose, and minister to animals with cancer. Its visionary design provides AMC’s oncology team with the optimal environment needed to diagnose and treat patients, focus on early detection, enhance outcomes, and work toward a cure for cancer through advanced research. In 2022, the Cancer Institute recorded 3,298 patient visits by 1,099 individual patients. These numbers reflect the temporary closure of the Radiation Oncology Service while the suite was renovated and the new Elektra Versa HD linear accelerator was installed.

The new linear accelerator, the only one of its kind in veterinary medicine, enables AMC oncologists to treat cancer in a diverse range of patients with simple to complex needs, and provide advanced treatments for even the smallest targets. The state-of the-art suite was reopened with a ribbon cutting on October 12th, returning the service to full, and improved, operations.

Emilia Saint-Amand Krimendahl Institute for Trauma Care

The Emilia Saint-Amand Krimendahl Institute for Trauma Care is a state-of-the-art facility, providing compassionate and expert care for pets that need emergency and critical assistance. AMC is the only Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS) Level 1 Facility in New York City and one of only a few in the world that can provide total care for every aspect of the small animal trauma patient. We are fully equipped to manage life-threatening traumatic injuries and staffed by experienced veterinarians with specialty training in emergency medicine. Because AMC is both a Level I Trauma Center and a specialty hospital, our patients have on-site access to experts in numerous veterinary specialties, to ensure quick and collaborative multi-disciplinary care, if necessary. In partnership with the emergency room, our intensive care unit is staffed by a team of clinicians who work alongside in-house specialists and referring veterinarians to provide the highest standard of care. Because we never close, we are able to provide round-the-clock monitoring and treatment of critically ill pets. In 2022, the ECC team handled 19,164 patient visits – more than a third of all AMC cases.

“AMC’s re-certification as a Level 1 Trauma Care facility recognizes our outstanding clinical capabilities, the depth of our clinicians’ experience, the broad range of specialties we offer, and our longstanding commitment to providing world-class care.”
Dr. Jennifer Prittie, Director of the Emilia Saint-Amand Krimendahl institute for Trauma Care

Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Institute for Postgraduate Education

While AMC’s postgraduate training program is always rigorous, 2022 presented some unique challenges that intensified the experience, including the ongoing pandemic, a facility under construction, and a record-breaking number of patient visits. Our interns and residents rose to meet the demands of a truly unprecedented time.”

For more than 50 years, AMC has offered veterinarians the opportunity to pursue additional training through the rigorous internship and residency programs of our Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Institute for Postgraduate Education. This invaluable educational experience allows veterinarians to reinforce, extend, and refine their clinical skills and enhance their diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities. Young veterinarians benefit from the size and diversity of AMC’s caseload and from the opportunity to participate in a collaborative learning environment under the guidance of doctors who are board-certified in multiple specialties.

AMC initiated its internship program in 1963, and it is now one of the most competitive in the U.S. Since the program’s inception, more than 2,000 veterinarians have completed internships at AMC. In 2022, AMC received 171 applications and filled 30 rotating internship spots. After completing a rotating internship, some doctors pursue an additional year in their chosen specialty. In 2022, AMC graduated seven specialty interns, and eight specialty interns began year-long training in seven fields: Avian and Exotic Medicine, Cardiology, Interventional Radiology and Endoscopy, Neurology, Surgery, Anesthesia and Pain Management, and Oncology. AMC offers residencies in numerous specialties including Cardiology, Dentistry, Neurology, Oncology, Surgery, and Emergency and Critical Care. Each three-year residency is intended to lead to board certification. In 2022, AMC had 36 residents in various stages of their three-year clinical training programs under the direct guidance of experienced medical staff. Each AMC resident plans and executes a research project leading to a scientific manuscript for submission to a peerreviewed professional publication. Because AMC is a member of New York’s extensive biomedical community, residents benefit from research collaborations with several prominent human medical centers, including NYU Langone Health, Weill Cornell Medicine, The Rockefeller University, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

10

Caspary Research Institute

Research is a fundamental component of the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center’s founding mission. AMC is proud to advance veterinary medicine by pioneering new discoveries and progressive treatments. Through our Caspary Research Institute, AMC veterinarians work to understand the origins of diseases, to develop preventive measures, and ultimately to achieve cures. AMC doctors conduct clinical investigations of naturally occurring diseases in pets, often in collaboration with physicians studying the same illnesses in humans, to enable more effective diagnoses, advance medical and surgical treatments, and prevent disease in animals and humans alike. More than 25 peer-reviewed research studies, authored by AMC veterinarians, and covering 12 specialty services, were published in 2022.

In addition, AMC veterinarians conducted clinical trials in four areas—Cardiology, Integrative and Rehabilitative Medicine, Interventional Radiology/Interventional Endoscopy, and Oncology. These trials included: evaluation of an oral nitrate medication added to conventional therapy to treat congestive heart failure in dogs with mitral valve disease; investigational study on home exercise plans for dogs recovering from tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) surgery; evaluation of artificial neobladder placement for dogs with resectable lower urinary tract tumors; comparison of combination chemotherapy and immunotherapy to treat dogs with splenic hemangiosarcoma.

“One of AMC’s missions is to create new knowledge through research and because we see thousands of sick and injured pets every year, we can use our experience treating those pets as one method of creating new knowledge. To meet our research mission, every year AMC veterinarians publish numerous scientific articles sharing new information with other veterinarians and the public.”

Ann and Charles Johnson One Health Institute

The Ann and Charles Johnson One Health Institute supports the One Health approach to medicine, recognizing the growing connection between the health of animals, people, and the environment. This synergism advances 21st century healthcare and helps protect and save millions of lives in our present and future generations. The Institute, which was named in 2019 in recognition of a generous gift from Ann and Charles Johnson, will continue to provide the platform from which AMC veterinarians can continue to work collaboratively through interdisciplinary research with leading medical centers to help advance veterinary and human medicine.

One Health Conference

The 2022 Virtual One Health Conference, “Connecting Human and Veterinary Medicine, A Comparative Approach to Infectious Diseases” took place from November 14–17th. AMC has hosted this annual conference, under the auspices of our Ann and Charles Johnson One Health Institute, for eight years, bringing veterinarians and physicians together to share information and insights that advance the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of both human and animal disease. In four one-hour sessions, veterinary specialists in Internal Medicine and Microbiology from the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), alongside physicians from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine, and Cayuga Medical Center, presented veterinary and human approaches to the study and treatment of infectious diseases, including leptospirosis, multi-drug-resistant organisms, salmonella, and Lyme Disease. Altogether, 310 individuals participated in the conference, representing 41 states, Puerto Rico, and 12 foreign countries.

Previous conferences have looked at comparative approaches to cancer, endocrine disease, cardiology, image–guided procedures, environmental emergencies, and the physical rehabilitation of chronic diseases.

14
“The important intersection between the health of humans, animals and the environment has become increasingly apparent and is reflected in the growing popularity of our annual One Health Conference.”

Denise and Michael Kellen Institute for Surgical Care

In 2022, AMC received a generous gift from the Denise and Michael Kellen Foundation to establish the Denise and Michael Kellen Institute for Surgical Care. The Institute will feature a brand new surgical suite, which is one of the most dramatic components of the hospital’s expansion and renovation project. The new suite will triple the size of AMC’s current surgical area with more than 7,000 square feet of new and renovated space. It will encompass five state-of-the-art operating rooms, a minor procedure room, a recovery room segregating dogs and cats, and a new Central Sterile Center. Construction is currently underway, with expected completion by December 2023.

“ We are proud to partner with AMC to develop this advanced Surgical Institute, which will not only offer the finest in veterinary surgical care but will enhance training opportunities for veterinarians at AMC and around the world.”

19

Chris and Bruce Crawford Feline Health Institute

The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center has long been a leader in feline medicine. Since the early 1960’s, when AMC relocated to its current site, our training programs have consistently produced renowned clinicians, as well as leaders in veterinary research and education. The Chris and Bruce Crawford Feline Health Institute will reinforce AMC’s standing as the leader in feline veterinary medicine, setting the gold standard for providing care to feline patients and better educating the broader community on the importance of feline health by serving as a resource to pet owners and other veterinary professionals. As part of AMC’s hospital renovation and expansion, and to ensure a more healing environment for our feline patients, the Chris and Bruce Crawford Feline Health Institute will contain a designated area where cat owners can check in and wait for appointments without disturbances from other animals. In order to best serve our feline patients, it is critical that the AMC be able to offer them a calm and quiet environment that meets their needs.

20
“Research shows that cats have long been medically underserved, primarily because there tends to be a lack of understanding about the care cats should receive. With an institute dedicated solely to feline health, AMC commits to reversing that trend and ensuring the health and wellbeing of cats throughout the world”

Compassionate Programs & Charitable Funds

AMC’s charitable programs lie at the heart of our mission to protect and strengthen the profound connection between people and their pets. In 2022, AMC provided $4.4 million in free or subsidized care. In 2022, 528 companion animals received nearly $1.7 million in free or subsidized care through our 13 charitable Community Funds, such as the Emma and Georgina Bloomberg AMC to the Rescue Fund, the Frank V.D. Lloyd Fund for Guide Dogs, Seniors’ Animal Veterinary Effort (SAVE), and Charlie’s Patient Assistance Fund. The remaining portion of charitable care provided by AMC includes assistance offered to other non-profit animal welfare organizations, discounts to the New York Police Department, and the care of stray animals left in AMC’s custody.

The Gift of Love Capital Campaign

“Our deep appreciation and thanks go to our many generous benefactors, who understood the need to expand and modernize our facility and responded to the challenge. For over a century, AMC has been a trailblazer in the veterinary field, and with a new hospital, AMC will continue to lead the way.”

In 2019, the Stephen & Christine Schwarzman Animal Medical Center launched the Gift of Love capital campaign to fund the expansion and renovation of 83,000 square feet of space. The project will enable AMC to continue to provide the best possible care to its patients, while opening new possibilities for cuttingedge research and creating an optimal environment for AMC’s residency and internship programs. On December 13, at its 2022 Top Dog Gala, AMC was pleased to announce that it had reached the campaign’s goal of $100 million. Fundraising efforts will continue, however, in order to generate support for the broadened scope of the renovation and expansion project. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
