TOP DOG GALA

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center’s 2022 Top Dog Gala, our premier annual fundraising event, and a marvelous opportunity to celebrate our shared love of animals and commitment to their health and well-being.

This year we are delighted to honor Stephen and Christine Schwarzman with the prestigious Top Dog Award, which was created to recognize individuals for their unwavering commitment to AMC as well as their fervent belief in the human-animal bond. Stephen and Christine are worldrenowned philanthropists whose beloved pets have received care from the veterinary specialists at AMC for many years. Their gratitude for our efforts and belief in our mission inspired them to make an unprecedented and transformational gift of $25 million to our Gift of Love capital campaign in 2021, and in turn, we were proud to rename the hospital the Stephen & Christine Schwarzman Animal Medical Center. Their extraordinary gift propelled us ever closer to our $100 million goal for the campaign, and ensured the success of our modernization, renovation, and expansion project. We are grateful not only for the Schwarzmans’ tremendous generosity and vision, but for their partnership in securing the future of this much-loved and seminal institution.

Tonight, we also honor some very special dogs—the FDNY K-9 Unit and Crisis Response Canines—for their unique skills, heroism, and selfless service in emergencies and times of need. You can see photos and learn more about the incredible work of these dogs and their handlers on pages 10 through 13.

We are also here tonight to celebrate you, our generous donors, whose love of animals and financial support allows Schwarzman AMC to pursue every aspect of our mission. Your commitment enables us to deliver advanced specialty medicine, pursue pioneering research, offer ground-breaking educational programs, and provide valuable charitable care to beloved companion animals.

On behalf of my fellow Trustees and the staff of Schwarzman AMC, thank you for your belief in our efforts, which inspires us every day to do all that we can to uphold the legacy of AMC and strengthen the human-animal bond.

Most sincerely, Robert Liberman Chairman, Board of Trustees

TOP DOG HONOREES STEPHEN & CHRISTINE SCHWARZMAN

We are delighted to honor Stephen and Christine Schwarzman with the prestigious Top Dog Award, which was created to recognize individuals for their unwavering commitment to AMC as well as their fervent belief in the human-animal bond. In 2021, Mr. and Mrs. Schwarzman made an unprecedented and transformational gift of $25 million to our Gift of Love capital campaign, and in turn, we were proud to rename the hospital the Stephen & Christine Schwarzman Animal Medical Center.

Stephen A. Schwarzman is Chairman, CEO and Co-Founder of Blackstone, one of the world’s leading investment firms, with $951 billion Assets Under Management (as of September 30, 2022) and has been involved in all phases of Blackstone’s development since its founding in 1985. Christine Schwarzman, an intellectual property attorney, has become a Tony Award-winning producer. Through No Guarantees, the theatrical production company she founded in 2017, she has produced or invested in over 35 shows.

In addition to their professional success, the Schwarzmans have made transformative philanthropy a central pillar of their lives. Major gifts Mr. Schwarzman has given include: $100 million to the New York Public Library; £175 million to the University of Oxford—the largest since the renaissance—to redefine the study of the humanities

for the 21st century; a foundational $350 million gift to establish the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing, an interdisciplinary hub to address the opportunities and challenges presented by the rise of artificial intelligence; and $150 million to Yale University to establish the Schwarzman Center, a first-of-its-kind campus center in Yale’s historic “Commons” building. In 2013, Stephen founded an international scholarship program, “Schwarzman Scholars,” at Tsinghua University in Beijing to educate future leaders about China. In addition to these major gifts, the Schwarzmans have also given to several local organizations that have had direct impact on those in their community, including a gift to support a meal program for students in Palm Beach County, Florida, ensuring nearly 4,000 local students would be fed during the weekends and $50 million of scholarship funds that have afforded nearly 800 underprivileged students the opportunity to attend Catholic schools in New York. Stephen also signed the Giving Pledge in 2020, committing to give a majority of his wealth to philanthropic causes.

Stephen and Christine share their home and hearts with three beloved Jack Russell Terriers: Piper, Honey, and Domino. Their gratitude for the extraordinary care their pets have received at AMC inspired their donation to ensure that pets and their families will continue to benefit from our veterinary expertise for years to come.

FDNY K-9 UNIT

The FDNY K-9 Unit was put into service in 2017 with just one dog. A second dog was added a year later, and by 2020, there were four new dogs. Today, there are a total of six dogs in the FDNY K-9 Unit. They are all rescue dogs who have been trained by Fire Marshal handlers to perform highly specialized functions for the FDNY.

Five of the dogs are named after FDNY members who have died in the line of duty. They are Bucca, named for Fire Marshal Ronald Bucca; Pete, named for Chief of Department Pete Ganci; Yadi, named after EMT Yadira Arroyo; Judge, named after FDNY Chaplain Mychal Judge; and Ray, named after Chief Ray Downey. Howie is named for Captain Howie Venetsky, who died of World Trade Center-related illness.

The FDNY K-9 Unit dogs encompass the K-9 Accelerant Detection and Search and Rescue Team. Most commonly, they will be searching for gas or lighter fluid to help FDNY Fire Marshals determine the cause and origin of a fire. Thanks to their training, the dogs can pinpoint where the accelerant originated in a fire, and they can even find accelerant after it has been burned. The dogs are used to quickly clear a building by doing room-to-room searches, as well as other lifesaving tasks.

The FDNY K-9 unit has become increasingly important in recent years. The accelerant detection dogs complete three hundred hours of training, and then train every day with their handlers. They have become a valuable tool for FDNY Fire Marshals and are critical to the Department’s lifesaving mission.

CRISIS RESPONSE CANINES

Crisis Response Canines (CRC) is a nonprofit organization comprised of certified K9 teams throughout the United States. CRC’s mission is to provide strength, comfort, and emotional support to individuals, families, communities, and first responders experiencing intense traumatic emotions in the aftermath of critical incidents.

CRC members are volunteers who dedicate thousands of hours each year supporting their communities or, when needed, those impacted by crises. CRC Comfort teams serve as the foundation for visits to hospitals, schools, businesses, speaking engagements, and other community events. Recently teams responded to requests and were present during the 9/11 Memorial Museum’s 2022 Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony.

CRC Operational Deployment teams include highly trained and certified K9s and handlers with the capability to respond nationally. CRC handlers hold certifications from FEMA’s National Incident Command Structure Training and are trained in critical incident stress management (CISM) principles. CRC handlers also hold several required advanced certifications and participate in ongoing training. CRC canines also hold advanced certifications and go through extensive training processes. CRC uses a blended model of CISM and animal assisted crisis response (AARC); a model developed by John Hunt, cofounder and chief operating officer of CRC.

These teams work effectively in crisis environments supporting individuals and communities affected by mass shootings, large-scale accidents, violence, abuse, tragic death, suicides, terrorism, natural disasters (fire, flood, hurricane, etc). Some (of the many) deployments include: Tree of Life Synagogue (shooting event), Surfside, Florida (condo collapse), Uvalde, Texas (mass shooting), Baltimore, Maryland (Firefighter line of duty deaths), and Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia (shooting event).

CONSTRUCTION AT SCHWARZMAN AMC

Construction is well underway at the hospital on East 62nd Street as we build 11,000 square feet of new space and and renovate more than 26,000 square feet of existing interior clinical and client space. When completed in 2024, the renovated building will ensure that we can continue providing the best possible care to our patients, while opening new possibilities for clinical research and creating an optimal environment for our residency and internship programs.

PROGRESS TO DATE

Expansion begins on the south side of the building. Work continues night and day to ensure the project is completed on time.

We hope that everyone who embraces AMC’s mission of providing compassionate and collaborative care to animals and to leading the advancement of veterinary medicine through innovative clinical research and education will be inspired to join the ranks of generous donors who have already made transformational gifts to the Gift of Love capital campaign. For more information, please contact our Development Department at development@amcny.org.

TRIBUTE TO KATE COYNE

After 12 remarkable years leading the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, Kathryn W. Coyne will retire as President and Chief Executive Officer at the end of 2022. While we are saddened to see her go, we are incredibly grateful for all that she has done to re-establish AMC’s leadership role in the field of veterinary medicine, ensure the hospital’s long-term viability, and preserve our institutional legacy.

A seasoned healthcare executive and passionate animal advocate, Kate was lured out of retirement to accept her “dream job” at AMC in 2010. Formerly the CEO of both Saint Barnabas Health Care System and Union Hospital in New Jersey, Kate immediately understood the need to implement practices commonly utilized in human medicine to enhance AMC’s delivery of veterinary care. Under her visionary leadership, Schwarzman AMC experienced a steady rise in patient visits each year – to nearly 60,000 projected in 2022, making AMC the busiest veterinary medical center in the nation. Kate’s commitment to excellence in patient care and client satisfaction was exemplified by the opening of AMC’s Cancer Institute in 2015. She also oversaw the development of an ambitious fiveyear strategic plan that enhanced all aspects of our operation, including efficiencies in the delivery of care, expansion of specialty services, enhancement of postgraduate education, increased opportunities

for clinical research in collaboration with human health institutions, and the establishment of AMC’s reputation as the leading provider of animal health information for pet owners worldwide.

Perhaps most importantly, Kate recognized the critical need to expand and renovate AMC’s hospital building to secure AMC’s future and uphold our commitment to the highest quality veterinary care. She has been involved in every step of the process, utilizing her unique ability to balance collaboration and decisiveness. When Kate and her fellow Board members embarked on the effort to raise the capital campaign funds needed to support this project, no one was a bigger champion of, or better spokesperson for, this ambitious undertaking.

Although Kate is stepping down from her role as President and CEO, we know how fortunate we have been to benefit from her wisdom and experience for all these years.

Thank you, Kate, for all you have done for the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center. Your impact on animals and their families will be felt for generations to come. Those of us who have been fortunate to work with, and for, you will hold you in our hearts, always.

TOP DOG GALA

Dear Friends,

It has been the honor and privilege of my lifetime to serve as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center. To combine my experience in hospital leadership with my passion for animals and call it a “job” was a dream come true. My 12 years here have truly been a gift.

Throughout this time, I have been overwhelmed by the generosity and dedication of our donors, whose commitment to our work has not just made our current success possible but has also ensured our future as a leader in veterinary medicine.

I have been tremendously fortunate to work with Trustees who not only care deeply about animals, but are committed to ensuring that Schwarzman AMC thrives so it will be available to serve future generations of pets and their families.

I have been inspired by my colleagues, whose dedication to excellence is visible every day. To our greeters at the front door, our assistants and LVT’s, to all the staff veterinarians, interns, residents, client services, and all the unsung, behind-thescenes support staff, my deepest admiration and gratitude for all you do.

My departure is bittersweet as I will miss so much about working here, especially my daily encounters with pets in the lobby and the countless people who have become my friends. I know how fortunate I am to have had 12 extraordinary years full of incredible memories. Thank you for entrusting me with the great responsibility to lead this beloved institution. I am enormously grateful and tremendously proud to have served in this role.

With sincere thanks,

HISTORY WAS MADE ON MARCH 10, 2012.

That was the day Kathryn Coyne took the reins of the Animal Medical Center, in the same year of its 100th anniversary. Since then, Kate hasn’t stopped working to make this venerable veterinary hospital better and better; in fact, Kate has made the best better.

Kate, we thank you for what you have done and how you have guided us over the years to this point in time. Your love, intelligence, compassion, dedication and vision have spurred everyone — veterinarians, staff, clients, donors — to do whatever possible to ensure Schwarzman Animal Medical Center’s health as it rides through its second hundred years.

From the McCarthy family members, here and beyond — Salem, Mabel, Dixie and Calvin, Diamonds, Court Jester, Joe, Henry and Tidal Wave — we appreciate how you have given so very much of yourself and of your life to make Schwarzman Animal Medical Center the best veterinary institution in the world.

Thank you, Kate. You have helped shape history and enhanced the lives of so many people and their pets.
