A Year in Review 2021 ANNUAL REPORT
iii
A Letter from Schwarzman AMC Leadership Dear Friends and Supporters, 2021 was a year like no other for our 112-year-old institution, marked by constant adaptation to the ebbs and flows of the COVID-19 pandemic, increased demand for our services, the onset of construction to renovate and expand the hospital building, as well as our renaming to the Stephen & Christine Schwarzman Animal Medical Center following a historic $25 million gift to our Gift of Love capital campaign. Throughout all this, we have been overwhelmed by—and grateful for— the generous support of our donors, whose continued belief in the importance of our mission inspired us every day to uphold our legacy of preeminence in the field of veterinary medicine. The intention of this annual report is to share information about our work in 2021 and to recognize the individuals and organizations whose contributions fueled our efforts to strengthen the human-animal bond. Highlights of 2021 included: • responded to nearly 60,000 patient visits with compassionate and collaborative care; • provided over $4.5 million in free or subsidized care to families in need of financial assistance; • welcomed our 57th class of interns and residents to further hone their skills and provide a foundation for the next generation of veterinary leaders; • published more than 40 peer-reviewed research studies in professional journals, which were authored by Schwarzman AMC veterinarians; and • launched our online pet health library as a worldwide resource for the most up-to-date animal health information. 2021 also included significant steps forward in the construction work needed to complete our renovation and expansion project. These included:
• removal of our Linear Accelerator to create appropriate space for new state-of the-art equipment for Radiation Oncology • developing infrastructure to create a tower on the south end of the building for our upward expansion • preliminary work to build a new elevator bank dedicated solely to transporting patients • creation of a temporary space for our Radiology and Cardiology services while their new space is constructed. We are pleased with our progress to date and anticipate completion of the project in the Fall of 2024. While the work continues, our top priority is to ensure that the Schwarzman AMC team continues to provide the best possible care to every pet that comes through our doors. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and staff of the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, we invite you to learn more about these and our other accomplishments in the pages that follow. Importantly, we thank our supporters, whose contributions in 2021 enabled us to raise nearly $14 million to fund our non-profit mission, while also helping us to move ever closer to our $100 million goal for the Gift of Love campaign. We are humbled by your partnership in our endeavors. With Gratitude,

Our Hospital
Founded in 1910, the Stephen & Christine Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC) is a non-profit academic veterinary hospital dedicated to providing compassionate and collaborative care to animals and to leading the advancement of veterinary medicine through clinical research and education. AMC has a clinical staff of 354, including 52 senior veterinarians, whose combined expertise covers more than 20 specialties and services. Housed in the Elmer and Mamdouha Bobst Hospital on East 62nd Street in New York City and open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, AMC is the largest and busiest veterinary hospital in the United States, with an extraordinary volume and diversity of medical cases. In 2021, the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center recorded 59,565 patient visits. As it had since the onset of the pandemic in 2020, AMC kept its doors open throughout 2021 adjusting operations and policies as the number of COVID cases ebbed and surged in New York City. Like veterinary practices across the country, AMC experienced a significant increase in patient volume in 2021 and our senior administration worked tirelessly to accommodate the increased demand while always prioritizing the health and safety of our patients, clients, and staff. In April, Neil M. McCarthy, who was named Chief Administrative Officer in 2019, was promoted to Executive Vice President. In this position, Mr. McCarthy —who for more than 25 years served as
4
a member of the Board of Trustees— assumed responsibility for all day-to-day operations at AMC, while President and Chief Executive Officer Kate Coyne focused on the capital project. In September, AMC announced the appointment of Jaclyn Mavros, LVT, as AMC’s first Chief Veterinary Technician. In this role, Ms. Mavros is responsible for the management of the veterinary technician workforce and related patient care services, including oversight of Nurse Managers, Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs), Veterinary Assistants, and Clinical Educators. In 2021, AMC named two new senior staff:
Eileen Seage, VMD, DACVIM (SAIM), was appointed Senior Veterinarian in the Internal Medicine Service.
Alejandro Mendez, DVM, was appointed Senior Veterinarian in the Emergency and Critical Care Service.
New Service for Hospitalized Internal Medicine Patients In 2021, AMC introduced a new sevenday service, headed by Meredith von Roedern, DVM, DACVECC, and Melissa Milligan, VMD, DACVIM (SAIM). Drs. von Roedern and Milligan serve as “hospitalists,” overseeing the management of Internal Medicine patients while they are hospitalized,
ensuring coordinated care across services. While common in human medicine, this is an innovation in veterinary practice and reinforces AMC’s commitment to the highest standard of patient care to achieve optimal outcomes.

Cancer Institute
The Cancer Institute at the Stephen & Christine Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, founded in 2015 with a gift from Elaine and Kenneth Langone, is modeled after the most progressive, patientcentered human cancer hospitals in the country. It encompasses three services: Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, and Surgical Oncology. The Institute takes an integrative and centralized approach to patient care, utilizing the most innovative treatments to prevent, diagnose, and minister to animals with cancer. Its visionary design provides AMC’s oncology team with the optimal environment needed to diagnose and treat patients, focus on early detection, enhance outcomes, and work toward a cure for cancer through advanced research. In 2021, the Cancer Institute recorded 5,409 patient visits by 1,280 individual patients.
“ Since its inception in 2018, the Surgical Oncology service at AMC has seen a steady annual increase in the number of patients treated and the number of surgical procedures performed. We are proud to have achieved a 95% survival rate in 2021.” Katie C. Kennedy, DVM, MS, DACVS, Surgical Oncology Service Head

Emilia Saint-Amand Krimendahl Institute for Trauma Care
“ Our study found that by introducing fast-track service in a high-volume veterinary emergency department, resources can be distributed to improve speed of care, case flow, and client satisfaction.” Joel Weltman, DVM, DACVECC, PhD, Senior Veterinarian, Specialist in ECC, and Dr. Jennifer Prittie, DVM, DACVECC, DACVIM (SAIM), Department Head of ECC
8
The Emilia Saint-Amand Krimendahl Institute for Trauma Care is a state-of-the-art facility, providing compassionate and expert care for pets that need emergency and critical assistance. AMC is the only Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS) Level 1 Facility in New York City and one of only a few around the United States that can provide total care for every aspect of the management of the small animal trauma patient. AMC is fully equipped to manage life-threatening traumatic injuries and is staffed by experienced veterinarians with specialty training in emergency medicine. Because AMC is both a VECCS Level 1 facility as well as a specialty hospital, our patients have on-site access to experts in numerous veterinary specialties, to ensure quick and collaborative multi-disciplinary care, if necessary. In partnership with the emergency room, our intensive care unit (ICU) is staffed by a team of clinicians who work alongside in-house specialists and referring veterinarians to provide the highest standard of care. Because AMC never closes, the team provides round-the-clock monitoring and treatment of critically ill pets. Of all the services, Emergency and Critical Care experienced the largest caseload in 2021: the ECC team handled 22,109 patient visits—more than a third of all AMC cases and an increase of 28% over the prior year.

Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Institute for Postgraduate Education
For more than 50 years, Schwarzman AMC has offered veterinarians the opportunity to pursue additional training through the rigorous internship and residency programs of our Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Institute for Postgraduate Education. This invaluable educational experience allows veterinarians to reinforce, extend, and refine their clinical skills and enhance their diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities. At the Elmer and Mamdouha Bobst Hospital at AMC—with a clinical staff of 354, including 52 senior veterinarians—young veterinarians benefit from the size and diversity of AMC’s caseload and from the opportunity to participate in a collaborative learning environment under the guidance of veterinary doctors who are board-certified in multiple medical specialties. AMC initiated its internship program in 1963, and it is now one of the most competitive in the U.S. Since the program’s inception, more than 2,000 veterinarians have completed internships at AMC. In 2021, AMC received 191 applications for 31 internship spots. AMC offers residencies in numerous specialties including Cardiology, Dentistry, Oncology, Surgery, and Emergency & Critical Care. Each three-year residency is intended to lead to board certification. In 2021, AMC had 36 residents in various stages of their three-year clinical training programs under the direct guidance of experienced medical staff. Each AMC resident plans and executes a research project leading to a scientific manuscript for submission to a peerreviewed professional publication. Because AMC is a member of New York’s extensive biomedical community, residents benefit from research collaborations with several prominent human medical centers, including NYU Langone Health, Weill Cornell Medicine, The Rockefeller University, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
“ We are especially proud of AMC’s 2021 graduating Interns and Residents who completed training during the uncertainty and turmoil of this past year. Reflecting on a year that brought continuous challenges, we want to acknowledge their accomplishments and honor their commitment, perseverance, and passion for veterinary medicine.” Katherine Quesenberry, DVM, MPH, DABVP (Avian), Chief Medical Officer
11
Caspary Research Institute
“ Clinical investigators collect information, such as blood samples, biopsies, examination records, or x-ray images, from study participants and analyze the data to determine if the intervention under study is better than, the same, or not as good as the current standard of care.” Ann Hohenhaus, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM, Oncology), Director of Pet Health Information
Opposite Page: As part of their specialty training, residents are expected to design, execute and report on research in their area of clinical specialty.
12
Research is a fundamental component of the Schwarzman AMC founding mission. AMC is proud to advance veterinary medicine by pioneering new discoveries and progressive treatments. Through our Caspary Research Institute, AMC veterinarians work to understand the origins of diseases, to develop preventive measures, and ultimately to find cures. AMC doctors conduct clinical investigations of naturally occurring diseases in pets, often in collaboration with physicians studying the same illnesses in humans, to enable more effective diagnoses, advance medical and surgical treatments, and prevent disease in animals and humans alike. In 2021, AMC veterinarians, covering 11 specialty services, published more than 40 peer-reviewed research studies. Six veterinarians also contributed to chapters in textbooks published in 2021. In addition, AMC veterinarians conducted clinical trials in four areas—Cardiology, Integrative & Rehabilitative Medicine, Interventional Radiology/Interventional Endoscopy, and Oncology. These trials included: evaluation of an oral nitrate medication added to conventional therapy to treat congestive heart failure in dogs with mitral valve disease; investigational study on home exercise plans for dogs recovering from tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) surgery; investigation of the therapeutic value and effectiveness of a minimally invasive procedure called Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic biliary stenting to treat bile duct obstruction in dogs and cats; and a pilot study of resiniferatoxin administered into the bladder to manage lower urinary tract discomfort in dogs with bladder transitional cell carcinoma.

Ann and Charles Johnson One Health Institute
“ This novel One Health Conference is a pathway for veterinarians and physicians to embrace the similarities in shared diseases across species and engage in important dialogue about treatment options to improve outcomes for humans and animals. ” Kathryn Coyne, President and CEO
14
The Ann and Charles Johnson One Health Institute supports the One Health approach to medicine, recognizing the growing connection between the health of animals, people, and the environment. This synergism advances 21st century healthcare and helps protect and save millions of lives in our present and future generations. The Institute, which was named in 2019 in recognition of a generous gift from Ann and Charles Johnson, will continue to provide the platform from which Schwarzman AMC veterinarians can continue to work collaboratively through interdisciplinary research with leading New York City medical centers to help advance veterinary and human medicine.
AMC’s 7th Annual One Health Conference The 2021 Virtual One Health Conference, “Connecting Human and Veterinary Medicine, A Comparative Approach to Trauma in Emergency Medicine,” took place from November 29th through December 2nd. Since 2015, AMC has hosted this annual conference in which veterinarians and physicians come together to share information and insights that advance the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of both human and animal disease under the auspices of our Ann and Charles Johnson One Health Institute. At the 2021 conference, veterinary specialists in emergency and critical care partnered with physicians specializing in emergency medicine to explore veterinary and human approaches to the treatment of traumatic injuries. The four virtual one-hour sessions included: • Point-of-care ultrasound in trauma patients • Treatment of blunt force trauma injuries in humans and pets • Trauma-induced coagulopathy and the rational selection of blood products and fluids for resuscitation • Development of trauma systems and their impact on patient care In addition to AMC, the eight speakers represented BluePearl Veterinary Partners, the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Colorado State University, the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Mount Sinai Queens Hospital, Mount Sinai Beth Israel, and the John H. Stroger, Jr., Hospital of Cook County in Chicago. Altogether, 330 participants attended the conference, from 30 states, two U.S. territories, and 15 foreign countries.

The second session was held July 12-16 and the third on August 9-13. The week-long camp session is hosted on Zoom, and each day focuses on a new topic and includes a fun activity that a child can do at home. A downloadable Children’s Resource series is also available on the AMC website at www.amcny. org/ResourcesForChildren.
16
A user-friendly Pet Health Library was launched in February on the AMC website at www.amcny.org/pet-health-library. This resource provides information on commonly searched and frequently diagnosed illnesses and conditions, wellness and prevention tips, and downloadable resources. All content is verified by AMC experts and updated weekly.
The Usdan Institute’s May 2021 event focused on traveling with pets and summer safety, hosted by Dr. Carly Fox, Senior Veterinarian in Emergency and Critical Care.
Ask the Vet, a one-hour talk show heard monthly on SiriusXM STARS Channel 109, which invites listeners to call in with questions, became available as a podcast on all major platforms in March. On June 16, the online Animal Lovers Book Club debuted with a conversation with “CBS Sunday Morning” news correspondent, Martha Teichner, author of When Harry Met Minnie: A True Story of Love and Friendship. On December 8, Craig Grossi discussed his book, Craig & Fred: A Marine, A Stray Dog, and How They Rescued Each Other—about how a stray dog and a U.S. Marine met under the unlikeliest circumstances in Afghanistan and changed each other’s lives. 17

“ We are grateful to the many individuals and foundations whose generosity enables us to offer free and subsidized veterinary care to families in need every year.” Robert Liberman, Chairman
18
Schwarzman AMC’s charitable programs lie at the heart of our mission to protect and strengthen the profound connection between people and their pets. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, AMC provided over $4.5 million in free or subsidized care in 2021. This benefitted 533 companion animals that received nearly $1.7 million in free or subsidized care through our 13 community funds, such as the Emma and Georgina Bloomberg AMC to the Rescue Fund, the Frank V.D. Lloyd Fund for Guide Dogs, Senior Animal Veterinary Effort (SAVE), and Charlie’s Patient Assistance Fund. Our charitable care also included assistance to other non-profit animal welfare organizations, discounts to the New York Police Department, and the care of stray animals left in AMC’s custody.

The Gift of Love Capital Campaign
“ The Animal Medical Center is a world-class institution and a center of excellence in the veterinary field. We’re pleased to support this transformative project which will expand the exceptional care available to the New York community and allow Schwarzman AMC to continue innovating for the benefit of all in veterinary medicine.” Stephen and Christine Schwarzman
20
In October 2019, the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center launched its Gift of Love capital campaign, the largest campaign in AMC’s 112-year history. The response to our request for support has been overwhelming. With a shared belief in AMC’s mission and an understanding that change is essential to retaining our leadership role in veterinary medicine, many donors responded generously to our request for support. This generosity has allowed us to begin work on the addition of more than 11,000 square feet of new space and the renovation of more than 26,000 square feet of existing interior clinical and client space. Most importantly, this expansion and renovation will ensure that AMC can continue providing the best possible care to our patients, while opening new possibilities for clinical research and creating an optimal environment for AMC’s residency and internship programs. With the $25 million gift from Stephen and Christine Schwarzman to rename the hospital, by the end of 2021, we had raised $85 million toward our $100 million goal.

From the Heart June 19, 2021 | Virtual Event | On Saturday, June 19th, AMC celebrated Heart, a Labrador Retriever and obedience champion, who was treated for cancer of the spleen at AMC. Heart’s owner, Linda Brennan, was so grateful for the care she received and for the additional time she had with her beloved pet that she wanted to give back to AMC and help other working dogs with cancer. Linda reached out to her friend, AMC Trustee Mike Heaner, and together with the Development staff, they created a virtual fundraising event. The gathering featured a beautiful tribute to Heart, a presentation and Q&A with Dr. Nicole Leibman, Director of the Cancer Institute, a silent auction, and a slide show. The event raised nearly $16,000 for several of our community funds to help
working dogs battling cancer. We are grateful to Linda for her generosity and thoughtfulness as well as her time and effort in creating this unique and wonderful event.
