A new time To publish the Amazon is not an easy work. Our region has continental dimensions that overcome even the territorial extension of many countries. In this wilderness covered by the exuberant Amazon Forest, there are many areas to be studied, a high potential to be discovered and revealed to the world. This part of Brazil has a lot to offer to tourists: beauty, culture, different and curious habits. The state of Florida is one of the favorite destinations of the amazon people, but we have things to be shown here, in this region, to the North Americans that live there. Timidly, the Native Amazon starts to face this challenge bringing to the reader, starting from this publishing, a sample of what our region has to offer as the best. We propose this informational exchange to stimulate the curiosity of how to go and explore a region that involves nature and mystery already, that has an objective of preservation more strict.

We present to you, in this first edition, a little bit of what the Amazon has for you.

The capital of Amazonas will have during the World Cup the opportunity to show to the world how a developed city seeks to live in harmony with the environment.

Practically stuck in the middle of the Colossal Amazon Forest, Manaus stands out for being a metropolis of nearly 2 million inhabitants and with the renewed challenge of growing in harmony with the environment. For the last few years, the capital of Amazonas state seeks for a form of sustainable development and enhancement of its tourism potential.

With the choice of the city as one of host cities for the 2014 Fifa World Cup this responsibility has grown. Tidy the house up to take the opportunity to show to the world that modernization and nature are compatible became the challenge of public admi-

The government and municipality are seeking ways to improve the structure of the city to attend the demand of tourists who will be here to watch the games - especially the United States, a country which the national team is in town to dispute the world soccer championship’s title.

With this opportunity, Manaus has to offer programs for all kinds of taste. Beyond the tours offered by hotels in the jungle, the city keeps other surprises that have been prepared since the announcement of the host cities of the 2014 World Cup.

The postcard of the city (the tourist complex of Ponta Negra) was recently renovated receiving a structure that allows people and tourists to take a walk, bike rides and enjoy the vastness of the Black River and allowing watch the beautiful sunset. Nearby, visitors can take small boats to meet beaches along the river, not far but nice and quiet, as the Lua Beach and Tupé Beach, two destinations for whose are looking to escape the urban bustle.

The Historical Center of the city began to receive a revival that will work to seek fidelity to the

original traces of old buildings.

One of the existing spaces is the Largo de São Sebastião, surrounded by many old and restored houses, where is located the Manaus Opera House raised in 1896 and also one of the city symbols. There are several bars and restaurants and also families that usually take stilly walks, visiting the art galleries around them and watching any presentations of artists in the square and try the delicious tacacá, a regional soup that conquered many visitors. In its surroundings, the Justice Palace can also be visited as in the Opera House, receiving several presentations.

This is only part of Manaus which foreign visitors will know. And certainly they will be amazed.

Nowadays, the place is an important and coveted roadmap for global tourism, as part of the travel routes of many international. In Miami, the international roadmap that includes knowing this phenomenon natural part of Fort Lauderdale, Florida (USA) and passes, in Brazil, Santarém, Pará, and Parintins and Manaus, Amazonas. The visits of the great transatlantic generally occur between October and April, during the flooding of the rivers in the Amazon when averaged

Historical Patrimony Almost three years ago the Meeting of the Waters was listed historical patrimony by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan, in Portuguese) and natural heritage of mankind, but it’s still awaiting approval by the Ministry of Culture.

The two wonders union The Meeting of the Waters is the unmissable attraction in the Amazon, where the waters of the Negro and Solimões rivers meet to provide an amazing spectacle.

One day, the son of the sun, which had golden hair and bright as the day, fell in love with a beautiful Indian, the daughter of the moon, with long black hair as the night. The lovers got away to the forest because their love was forbidden and

could not happen. Hidden by the grandeur of the forest, which prevented the entry of the powerful look of the sun and the brightness of the moon, the lovers lived their love.

Furious, the sun and the moon split the earth and they stopped the wind, to make way through the woods and find their children. Afraid of death, the men robbed India and gave a sacrifice to the Sun god, throwing her into the water to kill her drowned. Desperate, the son of the sun embraced his love and died with her.

In way opened by the gods remained only a memory of that love. It was born a river with two colors that never mix, but are eternally embraced.

At the Negro River rests the beautiful India with her long hair color of the night, always embraced by the golden and bright hair of the son of the sun that follows its course as the Solimões River and starts the Amazon River.

The Indian legend about love of the children of the sun and moon is simplified and empirical, derived from indi-

genous traditional knowledge to explain the secrets of the Meeting of the Waters, natural phenomenon that happen at the confluence of the Negro and Solimões rivers, in front of Manaus.

With 6.2 miles long, the phenomenon is formed by the muddy waters of the Solimões River and the black waters of the Rio Negro.

The rivers never mix because of the differences of density and temperature of the water and the speed of the current.

The Black River runs its course

about 1.24 miles per hour with a temperature of approximately 71.6ºF. The speed of the Solimões reaches up to 3.7 miles per hour until the temperature reaches 82.4ºF. The hydrologic phenomenon is considered one of the most beautiful natural symbols of the Amazon and attracts the attention of thousands of tourists who visit the state, you cannot miss destination on any tour package carried by region.

To access to this natural beauty, the visitors can hire river

tour packages from Manaus, the starting point of the script.

The trip takes less than half an hour by boat, leaving the Port of Manaus. In a short time the boat get at the meeting of the waters where the tourists can touch the water, feel the temperature of both and marvel at one of the biggest secrets in the region.

After passing the Meeting of the Waters is possible to come across fresh water dolphins swimming the Negro and Solimões rivers as if they were welcoming to visitors.

On the way the Meeting of the Waters tourists can come across other Amazonian wonders. After passing the imaginary line of the Solimões and Negro rivers, visitors can meet Janauari Ecological Park, an area of 9000 hectares which preserves many amazonian ecosystems.

At ecological park, the tourists can get nature trails

and see the wildlife and plant species as existing and grand centennial trees only in the Amazon, including the sumaúma, the region’s largest tree, 50 meters high, and the giant water-lily, typical aquatic plant Amazon environment.

But those are others mysteries to be discovered in the Amazonian universe.

The Amazon Codfish gained the Brazil and the world

Sustainability to the Amazonian taste

Amazonian fish with a European status.

The “Amazon Coldfish” has drawn attention of the authorities, entrepreneurs of this segment, and also it catch the local and national media attention.

But, afterwards, is cod a fish? Against what many people think, no. The Cod is an industrial product as result from the process of salting/or drying, that makes the fish with only 45% of the relative humidity. Traditionally, five types of fish are used, to make the coldfish: the Gadus morhua (Atlantic Cod) the Gadus macrocephalusi (Pacific

Cod), the Molva molva (Ling) Pollachius virens (Saithe)e o Brosme brosme (Zarbo) – and, now, the Amazonian pirarucu, Arapaima gigas. According to the secretary of Rural Production of the State (SERPROR, in portuguese), Eron Bezerra, the flesh of the amazonian fish adapted to the fabrication process of the coldfish. The product is processed in the first salting factory in Brazil, installed in the city of Maraã, (394.5 miles from Manaus).

The city was chosen for having 172 lakes from the Mamirauá’s Reserve where ribeirinhos, the people who leave on the riverside, make themselves the handling of the pirarucu which is on the list of fish at risk of extinction because of overfishing but it is a sustainable

feedstock in Maraã.

Fishery The pirarucus are taken from lakes with gillnets by fishermen who are part of the Z-32 Cooperative of Maraã with technical assistance from Management Fishing Program Mamirauá Institute. Since 1998, the program promotes the conservation of fishery resources in the reserves of Mamirauá and Amanã with the community participation.

The participatory fishery management of pirarucus helped to increase approximately 425% natural stock of the species in the last 15 years in the managed areas.

Over a thousand fishermen were involved with fishing

and there was an increase in income over 400% for each of these workers.

The department (Sepror) negotiates the entrance in the networks of local and national supermarket. According to the survey by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Brazil imports on average 38 thousand tonnes of cod per year. Only in Maraã the industry has the capacity to produce 1500 tonnes in this period.

In 2013 the industry had record production of 50 tonnes.

But, increased to 5 thousand tons per year with the opening of another unit, located in Fonte Boa, a town 421 miles from Manaus.

If each ton of cod is sold for R$ 25 thousand (2.2 lbs to R$

25) , the turnover of the two industries will reach somewhere around R$ 112.5 million, equivalent to twice the annual budget of the two cities. The factories will be stocked with fish of handling areas as Mamirauá reserve and other reserves in the region.

According to Eron Bezerra, with the investment in the production of pirarucu’s cod, the government could solve two problems at once. “That’s because we raise the price paid to the producer and ended up with the lack of market, since Amazon’s Cod Factory is capable of processing all that is produced today,” he said.

The product was launched in Manaus, São Gabriel da Cachoeira (a town 529.4 miles from Manaus) and gained space in other brazilian states.

In January 2012, the cod was featured on the Thematic Social Forum in Porto Alegre (in Rio Grande do Sul) and won the title of the best example of sustainable development.

In the same year, the Amazonian cod was launched in São Paulo at the Dressing restaurant with the presence of the Secretary of Agriculture of São Paulo, Monika Bergamaschi, businessmen, actors and social activists Bruna Lombardi and Carlos Alberto Riccelli, Senator of Amazonas, Vanessa Grazziotin, the congresswoman Perpétua Almeida, besides journalists and the direction of the of Pão de Açúcar’s group. According to the CEO of the Group, Paul Pompilius, the pirarucu codfish is a great alternative to the São Paulo’s market.

In June, the product was also presented to Rio’s audience at a dinner during the Rio +20 conference and was known by everyone. The dinner was attended by artists, congressmen, scientists and researchers, beyond the Agriculture Minister Mendes Ribeiro Filho and Senator Vanessa Grazziotin. According to the minister, the Amazon codfish is a source of pride for the country.

The secretary pointed out that the salty pirarucu is already present in the Amazonian culinary for a long time, even being sold in popular markets in abundance as handmade but now the industrialization process adds value to the product.

majesty The Harpy eagle, one of the finest specimens of THE Brazilian fauna, it is facing risk of extinction.

Thirteen years ago in Manacapuru, a town 50 miles from manaus, capital of the Amazonas State, a young Harpy eagle the most powerful raptor in the world, delighted the Amazon Jungle on top of a Jutai tree, far... far away from civilization. Fragile, dependent of its mother and still not able to fly, the little bird became a “tv star” after being discovered and monitored by the Amazon Royal-Hawk Conservation Program, a program developed by the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA, in Portuguese).

Since then, the little bird became hope for the survival of its specie, even though the animal is considered as endangered specie of the Environment Ministry of the Brazilian government, according to the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Despite the strength, instinct, keen eyesight and speed attack, which transform the Harpy eagle in one of the

most dangerous and feared animals in the world, it has no predator and it is disappearing from the Brazilian forest.

A more powerful animal, the human being, is putting the species in risk of extinction for progress and greediness.

Hunting and deforestation are the causes of a serious drop in the numbers of this bird in Brazil. Currently, the Harpy eagle has disappeared from South to Southeast of the country and can only be found in the Amazon region.

Hunting and decrease of habitat areas may cause the extinction of the specie, says researcher Tania Sannaiotti, from the Real-Hawk Monitoring Program.

Monitoring In 2011, a bird of three years old which lived in captivity near Itacoatiara, a town 109 miles from Manaus, it was rescued by researchers at INPA and for a year it went through a process of re-adaptation to nature. It had to relearn how to fly and feed itself. So it remained a year and a half in a protected area of a jungle lodge to learn how to survive.

became free and received one more mission: reveal the travel habits of the species in the Amazon region.

Therefore, monitoring equipment consists of GPS and a VHF radio transmitter was installed in the back of the bird, so as not to disrupt your flight. It transmits data to the Argos satellite tracking used in various animal species. With the aid of equipment, researchers INPA monitor the displacement capacity of the bird, the average distance and territorial radius reaches it imposes its natural habitat.

If the bird was being monitored early, it was able to get the equipment when she turned two years old. “After six months when the puppies learn to fly they still staying another year in the tree where they were born. It is the mother who brings the power.

After the learning period of a year and a half to two years, they’ve learn to hunt alone, then they seek new territories away from the nest.

This project aims to put radios followed by satellites, to permit us to locate anywhere in the Amazon where is that harpy eagle. The aim is to

The harpy eagle male weighs 9.4 Ibs and measures 1.79 meters wingspan reaching up to 1.85 meters.

Young, only after a year will receive the final coloration of an adult. And thereafter may mate.

But on his first flight in nature the bird moves away only eight hectares of where he was released. Only two days later, the hawk Itacoatiara began to hunt for food. He attacked, unsuccessfully, a bunch of monkeys, even near the release site. And at the end of the day, it hunted a sloth of approximately 2.2 lbs.

Grayish head with tuft split in two black horns. Robust beak. Small eyes and in front of the skull.

Habits: do not approach human area. Occurs in dense forest. Registered in Mexico, Bolivia and Argentina. But most of the population of this species is concentrated in Brazil, mainly in the Amazon region.

Extinction: extinct in the South and Southeast regions of the country In the Amazon still does not know the number of the actual

population of hawks.

Reproduction: Research shows that the harpy eagle has only one partner for life. After mating, the female lays two eggs in the nests of twigs stack built only once. She seeks and chestnut trees as sumaumeiras.

The most common time for reproduction is the months of September and November.

Many people know that the United States is the paradise of shopping. But, besides the touristic area of Miami, in Florida (by the way, maybe it is the favorite place to shop for brazilians), there is a small city called Branson, located in the state of Missouri, midwest of the country, that in certain places it looks like Las Vegas – but without casinos. The small city is comfortable and well known by offering entertainment for all ages with live music, comedy shows, much kind of restaurant, amusement-parks, shopping malls and many hotels. As in this text we are going to talk about shopping, I’m not going to explain details about the attractions of the city. People that love designer clothing are going to be breathless with the price difference between America and Brazil! Yes! The prices are more accessible and, if you don’t have a limit for what you’re going to spend, you can be at

zero easily, because there are so many options and accessible prices that you feel like you want to take everything with you – even designer clothing for your grandmother’s neighbor’s dog. The United States have a business model that works well and make their clients to be loyal with: the incredible coupons, that depending on the time of the year you can get 50% to 80% off, without telling the coupons from other departments of the retail market. Is there anything better for who loves to spend money?

In Branson, the Tanger Outlet, with more than 65 stores, is the best place to buy clothes, shoes, toys, home furnishing and other departments. If you never came to the Uncle Sam’s Land or never heard about the taxes that you have to pay when you go to the cashier, here comes a tip: the price never is what is on the tag, because depending of the State you’re in, there is always a tax you have to pay that is 8% to 11% above the

total price of your purchase, that are taxes of the individual store that the government collects.

Another important information is that not every outlet has such attractive prices, as for example, the ones in Las Vegas, that have superior prices than the outlets in cities that aren’t well known. So, before you choose an outlet for shopping, search which ones offer better prices.

A lot of them have restaurants, restrooms, rest areas, lockers, and other stuff, so it’s possible to have enough energy to spend the whole day shopping if you want. If you’re planning a trip only for shopping, I recommend it! I remember that coupons can be bought in a little book that costs US$ 5, or if you sign up in the website www.tangeroutlet.com and print them.
