Exercise 1 An individual summary to conclude our personal understanding and takeaway from Assignment 1 that covers topics regarding Architectural Acts, Contract and Management, and UBBL by-laws.

This assignment has been instrumental in equipping me with a substantial knowledge base concerning the well-established guidelines governing space, light, and ventilation. This knowledge is paramount for aspiring interior designers like me, as it forms the cornerstone for crafting spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also comfortable and secure. Disregarding the proper considerations for space, light, and ventilation can lead to the creation of poorly constructed and unsafe environments for occupants, underlining the critical nature of these factors in design.

Furthermore, I familiarized myself with the meticulous details involved in determining the minimum area for rooms in residential buildings, specifying dimensions for essential facilities such as latrines, water-closets, and bathrooms. Understanding the nuances of establishing the appropriate height for rooms across diverse structures, including residential buildings, shophouses, schools, and public resorts, provided me with a holistic perspective on design considerations.

Looking ahead, I am committed to prioritizing space, light, and ventilation in all my future design projects. This commitment stems from the realization that these elements are not mere checkboxes but crucial contributors to the well-being and satisfaction of those inhabiting the spaces I design. I am poised to integrate this comprehensive knowledge into my design philosophy, ensuring that each project I undertake reflects a conscientious approach to creating environments that are both functional and enriching for the individuals who interact with them.

REFLECTION

Throughout the course of this project, I delved into various facets, broadening my understanding of topics ranging from energy efficiency in buildings to safeguarding structures from lightning strikes. I explored the intricate balance between incorporating natural lighting and ventilation for optimal occupant comfort. The utilization of air-wells, along with the implementation of mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning systems, became integral aspects of my learning, emphasizing the importance of technological solutions in enhancing indoor environments.

Engaging in this project has been incredibly satisfying, as it allowed me to envision the flourishing of a company while pursuing something I genuinely enjoy. Prior to this experience, my knowledge about the procedures and considerations involved in establishing a sole proprietorship in the field of interior design was limited.

While these fundamental aspects have provided a solid foundation, I am now motivated and eager to delve deeper into topics such as establishing a design practice and effectively managing projects.

Throughout this project, I gained insights into various areas, encompassing tasks such as aligning the company name with legal requirements, crafting a distinct corporate identity, and navigating the registration process with relevant authorities like SSM (Companies Commission of Malaysia), LAM (Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia), and MIID (Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers).

REFLECTION

Additionally, I delved into the intricacies of creating a comprehensive business profile, determining the business's direction, formulating vision and mission statements, and designing professional materials such as calling cards and letterheads. I also explored the organizational structure of a company, considering factors such as its size and the efficient distribution of responsibilities.

Furthermore, I gained a basic understanding of crucial financial aspects, including capital investment, monthly expenses, overhead costs, annual expenditures, revenue generation, and staff salaries and bonuses.

This encompassed estimating profit margins and developing a financial acumen that is essential for the sustainable growth of a business.

A significant takeaway from this project was the importance of offering services in accordance with relevant regulations, implementing effective marketing strategies, and assessing revenue and income potential through well-considered fee structures.

Adapting the business to future-proof against the challenges posed by rapid AI development and market competition emerged as a crucial consideration.

In conclusion, I have come to appreciate the importance of a company having its own identity, particularly in the context of a dynamic and evolving market. This experience has ignited a curiosity to further explore and apply these newfound insights, enabling me to contribute effectively to the growth and success of future endeavors in the field of interior design.

Progression

Engaging in this project has been yet another enlightening experience for me. It has brought to my attention that many of us, myself included, might not have been fully conscious of the safety regulations while immersing ourselves in the pursuit of pushing creative boundaries in our designs.

However, I firmly believe that it is entirely possible to adhere to these standards without stifling our creativity.

Recognizing our role as designers, I acknowledge the responsibility to critically think and analyze whether our designs not only meet the users' needs but also ensure their health and safety are never compromised. This awareness fuels my commitment to integrating safety considerations seamlessly into my design process.

Looking ahead, I am genuinely excited about the prospect of designing spaces that are more holistic in nature and fully comply with the requirements set forth by legislation. These regulations are in place for the overall wellbeing of all users, and I see it as both a challenge and an opportunity to seamlessly blend creativity with safety in my future projects. By doing so, I aim to contribute to the creation of environments that not only inspire aesthetically but also prioritize the health and safety of those who inhabit them.

REFLECTION

My aspiration is to delve even deeper into understanding safety standards, scoring systems like GBI (Green Building Index), and the practical application of building by-laws. I am committed to internalizing this knowledge to the extent that it becomes second nature when undertaking real projects.
