MARY JO SPICER BUGEL, ‘69

Alumnae Award The Alumnae Award is given to a graduate whose life embodies the teaching and spirit of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton and the Sisters of Charity, putting her Mother Seton education to use for the benefit of the human community through professional achievement and/or significant volunteer initiatives.

Mary Jo Spicer wanted to be a nurse. When she graduated from Mother Seton in 1969, she enrolled in a four-year program at Seton Hall University leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Right out of college, she accepted a position at the Children’s Hospital of New Jersey in Newark, and she has never looked back. By the time she earned her Master of Arts in Nursing Education from New York University in 1978, she had been working as a Public Health Nurse Coordinator and a Visiting Nurse. In the 1980s, she returned to pediatric nursing. Her knowledge and skills lifted her through the ranks, and in 1995 she was named Vice President of the Children’s Specialized Hospital, Ocean Division. After serving in that capacity for two years, she spent time as a school nurse and a supervisor at the Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside and New Brunswick.

Mary Jo has held academic appointments at Elizabeth General School of Nursing, Bloomfield College, Seton Hall, Kean University, Trinitas School of Nursing & Union County College, and the University of Medicine & Dentistry of NJ/ Rutgers School of Nursing. Since 2017, she has been the Assistant Dean, Entry to Baccalaureate Nursing Practice Division on the Newark Campus of Rutgers School of Nursing. She holds several certifications, including one as a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) conferred through the National League for Nursing.

She eventually returned to Seton Hall to enroll in a Ph.D. program in nursing, and in 2011, she became the first graduate of that program. Her dissertation study— Out of the Mouths of Sibs: A Phenomenological Study of the Experience of Being a Well School-Age Sibling of a Child with a Traumatic Injury—received the 2013 International Award for Nursing Excellence: Research Dissertation Award from Sigma Theta Tau International. Because of her deep knowledge of how to help children whose sibling has sustained traumatic injury, the National Alliance for Grieving Children asked Mary Jo to prepare guidelines to be used to help such children. The materials she prepared were subsequently widely distributed, in one case to the grieving families in Newtown CT, whose children had been killed in the Sandy Hook massacre.

Through all of her professional and humanitarian accomplishments, Mary Jo has remained one of the most visible and constant supporters of her Alma Mater. It is with pride and pleasure that we bestow on her the Alumnae Award and induct her into the Mother Seton Regional Hall of Fame.

DAWN MOELLER REINHARDT, ‘84

Alumnae Award The Alumnae Award is given to a graduate whose life embodies the teaching and spirit of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton and the Sisters of Charity, putting her Mother Seton education to use for the benefit of the human community through professional achievement and/or significant volunteer initiatives.

Dawn Reinhardt is a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, having served in the 3rd Combat Communications Group on Tinker AFB in Oklahoma working in the Information Technology field. She attained the rank of Sergeant ahead of her peers (“Below the Zone”), a distinction awarded to the top 4% in the Air Force. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Mathematics from Kean University and an M.Ed. from Georgian Court University. In addition, she holds teaching certificates in elementary education and mathematics, as well as a supervisory certificate in school administration.

Dawn started her career in education teaching math and religious education at St. James in Woodbridge, and later moved to Neptune (NJ) Middle School where she taught math and computer science. Currently, Dawn is an administrator in the Neptune Township School District where she oversees the Mathematics Department, Educational Technology, Physical Education, and the summer program. She is responsible for teacher training and for the K-12 mathematics programs throughout the district. She also creates math assessments and monitors student achievement.

As part of her job, she stands in regularly as principal for the five elementary schools and the Early Childhood Center.

Dawn and her husband John are remarkably active in many charitable causes, feeling that the excellent care their family has received from the Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) and Hackensack Meridian Health demands that they give back to the community and promote good health for all. Dawn currently sits on two boards associated with Hackensack Meridian Health: the Women’s Heart Fund whose focus is to educate women about their heath, and the Children’s Advisory Committee. For the last decade, she and her husband have supported the JSUMC’s Sweetheart Ball focusing on oncology, co-chairing the event in 2014 and 2015, and they have committed to the oncology phase of the Next Step Capital Campaign Committee for HOPE Tower and for the KHOC Children’s Hospital at JSUMC. Always seeking ways to give back, Dawn has been involved in many other philanthropic endeavors over the years, such as co-chairing the Monmouth Park Charity’s Kentucky Derby Committee which raises money to support over 50 local non-profit organizations, the Ashley Lauren Foundation which supports the everyday needs of families who have a child fighting cancer, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, ARC of Monmouth County, and the March of Dimes.

Dawn is an active parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Colts Neck where she serves as an Extraordinary Minister. Clearly, Dawn embodies in her life the spirit of Saint Vincent de Paul and Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. Her life is an outstanding example of what it means to live Seton Spirit. We are proud to induct this Seton Sister into the Hall of Fame.

KATHLEEN PRICE BLECHAR

Faculty Award The Faculty Award is given to a current or former Mother Seton faculty member who is a Master Teacher, but more importantly, who teaches the meaning of “Seton Spirit” by example.

When Kathleen Price Blechar graduated from Caldwell University in 1969, she put her study of history and political science to good use teaching social studies at Our Lady of Sorrows Grammar School in South Orange, NJ. After five years on the faculty there, she taught social studies for a year at St. Vincent Martyr School in Madison, utilizing her new Master of Arts in Teaching from Seton Hall University.

It was in 1989 that Kathleen found her true home on the faculty of Mother Seton Regional. She joined a strong Social Studies Department at MSR, and she contributed much during her 27 years on the faculty to keep it that way.

She taught AP U.S. History II, Exploring America’s Diversity, Sociology, and World History—the kind of courses that students carry with them for the rest of their lives. She continuously learned more about her subject matter and her craft, attending many conferences and seminars over the years. In addition to her teaching, she moderated some of the most significant extracurricular activities any school can offer—the National Honor Society and the yearbook Sojourn, and she advised the Senior Class. Although she was a master teacher, some of her most important work occurred through her interactions with the students who came to know her through these activities.

There was a great deal of support for Kathleen’s induction into the Hall of Fame. Clearly, she remains and will remain the beloved and remarkable Mrs. Blechar for MSR graduates of the 1990s, the 2000s, and the 20-teens.

We are delighted to be able to honor her for all she has given to her students and to our Alma Mater.

RITA MURPHY SHUGRUE

Faculty Award + In Memoriam The Faculty Award is given to a current or former Mother Seton faculty member who is a Master Teacher, but more importantly, who teaches the meaning of “Seton Spirit� by example.

Rita Murphy Shugrue graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth in 1940 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in both English and Spanish. She returned to her own Alma Mater—St. Patrick’s High School in Elizabeth—to launch her teaching career against the backdrop of the onset of World War II. At St. Patrick’s, she became a colleague of the Sisters of Charity who had taught her in elementary and high school as well as in college. After two years of working at St. Pat’s, she transferred to teaching Spanish at Battin High School, also in Elizabeth. She served on the faculty there until 1947 when she left the workforce to raise the growing family she and her husband Timothy had established.

In 1959, when her children were all in school, she returned to teaching, this time in Blessed Sacrament School, which was the family’s parish in Elizabeth. Five years later, the Shugrues moved from Elizabeth to Westfield and Rita left Blessed Sacrament. After another brief hiatus, she answered an ad in the paper for an English teacher at Mother Seton Regional High School in 1967. The principal, Sister Irene Margaret, hired her before the interview had even concluded. In September of 1967, Rita happily returned to working side-by-side with the Sisters of Charity.

Mrs. Shugrue was a much-beloved faculty member, and even at this distance, her former students still speak fondly of her and of her easy spirit and the superb rapport she enjoyed with her students. A couple of years into Rita’s time at Mother Seton, Sister Irene Margaret offered her the position of vice principal. She said yes, and she served in that capacity until her retirement in 1977. Her name is always mentioned when graduates of the 1970s reminisce about their high school days. We remember her fondly, and we are happy to honor her as we induct her into the Mother Seton Regional Hall of Fame.

MSGR. TIMOTHY SHUGRUE

Friend of Mother Seton Regional HS A friend of Mother Seton Regional High School is an individual or group who has assisted Mother Seton Regional High School as it “challenges, empowers, and inspires young women to achieve excellence in academics, personal growth and service to others in a nurturing, richly diverse community� through personal, spiritual or financial support.

Monsignor Timothy Shugrue is a native of Elizabeth, NJ. He attended Blessed Sacrament School there, before moving on to Seton Hall Prep, Seton Hall University for a B.A. in Classical Languages, and an M.A. in Systematic Theology from Darlington Seminary. He has been a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark since his ordination in 1973.

In the 46 years of his priesthood, he has served on a multitude of boards and committees, including as a member of the Archdiocesan Senate of Priests (President, 1981-83), as the Director of the Office of the Permanent Diaconate, and as 1983 President of the National Association of Permanent Diaconate Directors. He served on the Archdiocesan Council of Priests, and as a consultant to the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Priestly Life and Ministry.

For several years, he was the Chaplain at Essex Catholic Boys’ School, first in Newark, and later in East Orange.

Msgr. Shugrue has also served in a number of parishes in the Archdiocese, beginning with St. Nicholas and St. Aedan’s—both in Jersey City—Our Lady, Star of the Sea in Bayonne, and Immaculate Conception in Montclair. After 18 years as pastor in Montclair, he moved to St. Michael’s in Cranford as a Parochial Vicar. He succeeded Mother Seton’s own Father John McGovern as Pastor of St. Michael’s in 2011.

Because his mother was a well-loved faculty member at Mother Seton from 1967 – 1977, Msgr. Shugrue has always had a soft spot in his heart for the school. Now that he has been pastor of the church next door for the last eight years, he has been a visible and vocal supporter of Mother Seton Regional. He seizes every opportunity to visit the school and to participate in its activities. He has attended every Alumnae Gala Fundraiser, and he offers support and encouragement in his gentle, self-effacing way. We are grateful to Msgr. Shugrue for his friendship, and we are pleased to induct him into the Mother Seton Regional Hall of Fame as a Friend of Mother Seton.

ALEXANDRA CLARK, ‘69

Anne Larusso Cascone Award for Outstanding Dedication to MSRHS This award is being bestowed upon an extraordinary alumna who has given of herself and her talents consistently in a variety of capacities in an effort to make a Mother Seton education possible for tomorrow’s young women.

Alexandra Clark graduated from Mother Seton in 1969 as a member of the school’s third graduating class. She enrolled at the College of Saint Elizabeth, earning her B.S. in Home Economics in 1973. After graduating, she accepted a position in the Department of Human Services in Elizabeth, NJ, where she worked as a Claims Representative for nine years. After some time out of the workforce, Alexandra began teaching home economics at Mother Seton Regional in 1989. She taught a variety of classes on all levels, and she worked with the students on many extra-curricular activities such as designing and constructing costumes for the annual musical, planning and chaperoning the senior class trip and prom, planning and overseeing trips to cultural events, and teaching in Saturday Enrichment Programs.

In 1997, Alexandra earned her K-12 teaching certification, and the following year, her M.A. in Educational Technology, both once again at the College of St. Elizabeth. In 1997, she accepted a position at Colonia High School teaching Family and Consumer Science. At CHS she was once again involved in several extra-curricular activities that kept both her and her students busy. Alexandra retired from teaching in 2013. She is an active member of the St. Agnes Parish Community in Clark, and she is a Seton Associate.

During the last 50 years, no name has appeared on more volunteer lists at Mother Seton than Alexandra Clark’s. Whether the task is stuffing envelopes, preparing baskets for an auction, collecting tickets for an event at the school door, gathering clothing or goods for those who need them, or attending various fund-raisers, Lexy is there. She continues to participate in Saturday and Summer enrichment programs for young people, and for the last few years, she has offered a series of cooking classes for alumnae—short -term educational sessions that result in good food and good fun. Lexy does all of these things and more without fanfare. She strives always to deflect the spotlight and accomplish her work as quietly as possible. On at least this one occasion, we are proud to shine the spotlight squarely on her and to say that Alexandra Clark is a prominent alumna and a model of faithfulness and graciousness. We are proud to honor her and to induct her into the Mother Seton Hall of Fame as the recipient of the Anne Larusso Cascone Award for Outstanding Dedication to Mother Seton Regional High School.
