From the Publisher...

October brings a breathtaking transformation to the world around us. Imagine crisp, refreshing air signifying a new beginning, and vibrant leaves bursting into vivid reds and yellows, painting the landscape with nature’s own artistry. Even when leaves turn brown and fall, they remind us that change is a beautiful, inevitable part of life. Embrace October—it is a glorious prelude to winter that you will not want to miss.

While I truly enjoy the cooler temperatures, I absolutely dislike it when the water in my pool gets too cold. October signals the end of my beloved pool season, which runs from May through September—my favorite months for swimming. I’ve always had a passion for water, whether it’s in a pool or at the beach. That’s why I’m eagerly planning a beach trip soon with my friends— to enjoy some fun, relaxation, and the warmest waters possible.

One of my closest friends, Dawn Smith, is featured on the cover this month in honor of breast cancer awareness. Dawn and I share a deep commitment to rescuing dogs in need—those abandoned by their families, found wandering the streets, or facing unspeakable neglect. While some reasons for surrender are beyond human control, most dogs are discarded like trash, which is utterly heartless. I cannot understand, nor will I ever accept, animal abuse or cruelty. Our shared love for animals has bonded us for many years, driving our relentless efforts to make a difference. Together, we stand as advocates for

these innocent lives, fighting to give them the love and respect they deserve.

Fostering a pet is one of the most rewarding experiences you can undertake. Over the years, I’ve had the joy of fostering hundreds of animals, and each one has uniquely touched my heart. Giving them up can sometimes be difficult.

Both Mike and I are soft-hearted and love our babies dearly, even when they test our patience with their mischievous antics. For example, my standard poodle’s playful curiosity has led her to tear up the couch and explore the corners of our wooden furniture as her personal teething zone. Yet, these quirks are just part of her charm—and she’s incredibly sweet and well-behaved most of the time. I could share countless stories about our animals, but the truth is, most of them become perfect for us because they fill our home with love, laughter, and unconditional companionship. If you’re considering opening your heart and home to a pet, I promise—it will change your life in ways you never imagined.

If you feel called to make a difference in a tiny life, we warmly invite you to become a foster home for these vulnerable babies. Your love and care can change their world forever. Please contact us today—every loving home is a blessing.

May God bless you and yours.

A Note From The Editor In Chief

October means fall is finally here, or as much as Texas will give us. It also means I made it another year around the sun. Even though good things are in store, it means baseball season is ending, and that is sad. It has been a great year for my Mariners, for sure! Maybe we have some angels in the outfield this year.

Each October, pink ribbons line store shelves, adorn lapels, and light up landmarks across the country. Breast Cancer Awareness Month has become a powerful moment, but awareness must go beyond symbols. The truth is that breast cancer is not just a statistic or a campaign—it is a personal reality for millions of Americans. However, awareness is not only about prevention. It is also about compassion. Survivors and those currently undergoing treatment carry invisible scars as much as physical ones. Dawn Smith celebrates her survivorship of breast cancer in this month’s issue. Dawn has a huge heart for not only humans but also dogs, and you probably won’t find a bigger dog lover than her. She has been through this battle for some time now, and along with her supportive community, she has kept her faith and fought this disease. She saw the end of the dark tunnel, and she is a great advocate for breast cancer awareness now.

Two people near to me have also fought this terrible diagnosis – one that has known me since I was a teenager, and one I was unable to have the pleasure of meeting, but had a profound impact on life. Karen Reeves, my pastor’s wife, has been through many trials, including one with breast cancer, and has come out stronger. I have watched her unwavering faith stand the test of time as she fought this battle. Breast cancer also took my maternal grandmother from this world before I was born. I was named after her, and when the whole family is together, they comment on how my mannerisms and words are just like hers. I wish I had the chance to know her.

This month and every month, let’s not just wear pink. Let’s have honest conversations. Let’s support research that moves us closer to a cure. Let’s check in on friends, sisters, mothers, and neighbors. And above all, let’s recognize that breast cancer awareness is not seasonal— it’s a year-round call to action. Because behind every ribbon is a story. Behind every statistic is a face. And behind every survivor is a community that chose to care.

Also included in this month’s issue are some outstanding entrepreneurs, such as Cornerstone Caregiving and Krazy Kat Loaded Waters, as well as the talented Debbie Brower Photography Model Team. Plus, what you all have been waiting for, the Reader’s Choice Nominations! The voting opens on October 1st and will continue through the 31st. It is great to see all the new and cool businesses around Texarkana! Make sure you vote for your choice!

As the “ber” months are upon us and the busyness ensues, be sure to slow down and take notice of yourself and your family. Celebrate each other along the way, encourage entrepreneurs of all ages, and support our local businesses.

CHERISHING EVERY MOMENT: DAWN SMITH’S JOURNEY THROUGH BREAST CANCER AND BEYOND

It was an ordinary Monday morning, one of those moments when routine feels almost automatic—until it does not. Dawn Smith stepped out of the shower, caught her reflection in the mirror, and froze. On the top of her left breast was a lump, hard and oddly shaped. “I knew what it was,” she says, recalling the instant that altered everything.

In that breathless pause between fear and certainty, Dawn’s life shifted. “It was absolutely devastating! I was shocked!” she says. “I have never missed a mammogram in the last 20 years. I did all the genetic testing and tested negative for all cancers. So, this really blindsided me. I don’t smoke, I eat right; this was not supposed to happen! But it did!” That moment became the beginning of a story of resilience, faith, and determination—a story Dawn now shares to help others fight, advocate, and hope.

Dawn was born in Garden Grove, California, and spent her early years there before her family moved to Gillham, Arkansas. Country life suited her spirit. “I loved it in the country because I could have my dogs and horses,” she says. Her childhood was shaped by change: divorced parents, a move across states, and independence that came earlier than most. “I moved out when I was 15 and put myself through high school, nursing school, then respiratory school,” Dawn explains. That grit carried her through challenges then—and prepared her for the greatest challenge of all, decades later.

She pursued nursing at Cassatot Vocational School, then earned her certified respiratory degree in Fort Smith, and later, her registry at California College of Respiratory Therapy. For nearly 37 years, she has worked at St. Michael’s, caring for patients, balancing science with compassion, and building the kind of inner strength she did not know she would need for herself.

Amid her career, Dawn found another anchor. “I actually met my husband, Jimmy, at St. Michael’s gym,” she recalls with a laugh. “I was running on the treadmill and saw him lifting weights. I thought to myself, ‘I could marry that man.’” She was right. Nine months later, they were dating, and two years after that, they were married.

Now celebrating 31 years of marriage, the couple raised two children whose accomplishments fill Dawn with pride. “We have two wonderful children,” she says.

Her son, Foxx, works for the Corps of Engineers at Lake DeGray and is married to Shanna Harrison Smith, a first-grade teacher pursuing her second master’s degree. Her daughter, Ramzi, recently graduated from dental school and now practices dentistry in Sulfur Springs. She is married to Wyatt LaVergne, a lineman for SWEPCO. “No grandchildren yet,” Dawn says, “just granddogs.” This strong family network became the foundation of her support when life suddenly demanded all her courage.

After spotting the lump, Dawn moved quickly. Working at a hospital, she knew who to contact. “I reached out to the breast navigator on Tuesday, and she got the order from my PCP for a diagnostic mammogram and an ultrasound,” she says. The mammogram missed the tumor, but the ultrasound revealed it immediately. A biopsy confirmed her fears: invasive lobular breast cancer. “I got my diagnosis on Friday evening,” she explains. “We met with my PCP the following Monday, and he ordered a breast MRI. This is how we found the three masses on the right breast.”

The news shook her to her core. “Of course, dying was the first thought,” Dawn says softly. However, just as terrifying was telling her children. “How to tell my kids—that was the hardest.” She and her husband decided to FaceTime their son and daughter. “Both live out of town,” she says. Sharing the news virtually was painful, but necessary.

With mastectomies and reconstruction scheduled seven weeks out, Dawn could not simply wait. “I couldn’t sit idle,” she says. Instead, she sought ways to fight back on her own terms. “I immediately started the carnivore diet and taking Ivermectin and Fenbendazole,” she explains. To her surprise, the tumor shrank from 1.6 cm to 0.62 cm before surgery. “This was my way of starting the ‘fight,’” Dawn says

When doctors suggested a lumpectomy, Dawn refused. “I chose the double mastectomy,” she says firmly. “Working in healthcare, I have seen people too often coming back after a lumpectomy, and the cancer is back.” Later, genetic testing confirmed she made the right call. “The genetic testing on the three tumors in my right breast has an 86% chance of turning cancerous. At my check-up, the doctor told me I made the best choice.”

Dawn and her husband chose Christus Highland in Shreveport, working with Drs. Julie Broadwell and Barron Oneal. “I couldn’t be more pleased! They are a great team,” she says. “They did the mastectomies and reconstruction at the same time.” The results offered relief: clear lymph nodes, clear margins, and no need for chemotherapy or radiation. She has now been taking a hormone blocker and will continue to for five years. “I do have a new sympathy for women who have hot flashes!” she laughs.

Though spared from the harshest treatments, Dawn experienced side effects. “The meds make me feel like I have morning sickness—it was every day, but now it is just every once in a while,” she says. She manages symptoms with determination, continuing her diet and regimen. “Doing this helps me believe I am still fighting any cancer cells that may be floating around.”

Throughout the journey, Dawn leaned heavily on her support system. “My husband, kids, and my close friends—they were all my rock!” she says. Their presence helped her navigate fear and uncertainty with steadiness. However, Dawn also points to something beyond family and medicine. “I had so many people praying for me, I know God must have heard them all,” she says. “Survivorship means I am very blessed.”

Cancer reshaped Dawn’s perspective. “Yes, I cherish every moment!” she says. “I guess I will always worry that it will come back, but I am being

proactive!” For Dawn, survivorship is not just a medical term—it is a philosophy of living. She embraces her days with gratitude, refusing to take even small moments for granted. When reflecting on her journey, Dawn admits one regret. “When all my genetic testing came back negative, I had a false sense of security and got lax on my self-breast exams,” she explains. “I would have been more regular with self-exams for sure.”

She now urges others to take screening seriously and to advocate for themselves. “Do not solely trust mammograms,” she insists. “They are a tool, and they are not perfect. Get your mammogram, and if it shows dense or fibrous tissue, ask for a follow-up ultrasound or a diagnostic breast MRI. Be a self-advocate!” Her voice grows firmer when she offers this advice: “Be persistent! If you don’t feel right, go with your gut feeling.”

Dawn also wants to clear away any illusions about what cancer is like. “It is all true,” she says plainly. “It sucks!” Yet even in that honesty, she carries a spirit of resilience that transforms hardship into empowerment. By speaking openly about her challenges, Dawn hopes others will face their own diagnoses with courage and clarity.

Today, Dawn balances her career at St. Michael, her family life, and her proactive health choices. While the shadow of recurrence lingers in her thoughts, it does not dominate them. Instead, she focuses on gratitude and strength.

Dawn Smith’s story is not defined by cancer, but by what she has done with it: faced it, fought it, and risen with gratitude and faith. Her journey is a reminder that resilience is not just surviving—it is thriving with a more profound sense of purpose.

Dawn speaks with a softer wisdom as she says, “I cherish every moment.” In those four words lies the essence of survivorship—not fear of what could be lost, but joy in what remains, and the courage to celebrate it fully.

Jaeley Barton

At Hooks High School, junior Jaeley Barton is balancing academics, athletics, and personal growth with remarkable focus. A dedicated cheerleader, animal enthusiast, and aspiring physical therapist, Jaeley is shaping a path that reflects her passions while embracing new opportunities that help her grow. She already understands the value of hard work, family support, and stepping outside of her comfort zone.

Jaeley’s home life is a balance of two households. She divides her time between her mom and her dad, creating a unique rhythm that has shaped her into a flexible and adaptable person. What ties both sides of her family together is their shared love of games. “What makes my family fun is that both of my families love card games and board games,” she says. For Jaeley, family time is lively, interactive, and always full of laughter.

When asked who inspires her most, Jaeley’s answer is immediate: her mother. “My mom is my inspiration in life because she always gets things done no matter what,” she explains. It’s a lesson in perseverance and determination that Jaeley carries with her, especially as she navigates the demands of high school and prepares for her future.

Jaeley’s passions reflect both her athletic spirit and her love for animals. She spends much of her time in cheer, where she thrives on teamwork, discipline, and performance. She also finds joy in showing cattle, a pursuit that allows her to connect with animals while honing responsibility and patience. “I love animals and working with them,” she says, highlighting a hobby that is both rewarding and meaningful.

Looking ahead, Jaeley has a clear vision for her career. After graduation, she hopes to attend a good college to major in kinesiology, eventually continuing her education in physical therapy school. Her goal is to combine her interest in science with her desire to help others heal and succeed.

Jaeley’s introduction to the DBP Model Team came through social media, where she discovered an opportunity that intrigued her. “I thought it would help me come out of my shell a little bit and be more open to new things,” she says. Since joining, modeling has become not just about photos, but about personal growth.

Her favorite experiences so far have been a garden session and a creative poolside session, both of which allowed her to experiment with posing and expression. Her dream photoshoot is a sunset session on the beach in a flowing dress!

To those considering the program, Jaeley offers reassurance: “Mrs. Debbie is very kind and welcoming. This program is good to learn how to pose in pictures better and be more relaxed while having photos taken of you.” Her advice for

success is practical yet insightful: “Keep your chin down and look at different angles while in the same position. And remember to relax!”

When it comes to fashion, Jaeley finds inspiration in Cassy Ho, creator of the Pop Flex brand. “She created the brand as a result of not liking the way workout clothes fit on her and the way clothing in stores were designed,” Jaeley explains. What resonates most is Ho’s dedication to listening to her community and designing pieces based on honest feedback—values Jaeley admires.

From cheerleading to showing cattle, from modeling to planning for a career in physical therapy, Jaeley Barton is embracing every opportunity with determination and grace. Grounded in her family’s love, inspired by her mother’s perseverance, and strengthened by her willingness to grow, she is building a future defined by confidence and compassion. Wherever her path takes her, Jaeley is sure to move forward with purpose— always ready to shine.

Mia Forte

Texarkana College freshman Mia Forte is already living with the kind of purpose, joy, and drive that many spend years trying to cultivate. Whether she’s cooking, traveling, or lending her skills to her church’s video ministry, Mia carries herself with dedication that sets her apart. Now, as she pursues both education and modeling, she is building a future that reflects her passions, her family values, and her love for learning.

For Mia, family is everything. She describes her loved ones as her greatest source of joy and balance. “My family is really important to me. We love spending time together, whether it’s sharing meals, traveling, or just joking around. There’s always a lot of laughter and realness when we’re together, which makes every moment special.” Mia spends much of her time with her grandmother and two aunts, and though she does not have siblings, she is very close to her cousins, Samuel and Sophie. “We are more like siblings instead of cousins,” she explains.

Her parents, both longtime educators and school principals, also play a central role in her development. Between them, they have spent more than 67 years in public education, and they continue to serve children in their community. “They’ve worked so hard and always stayed strong through challenges, showing me the value of resilience and dedication,” Mia reflects. “They taught me that it is important to give back to my community.”

Mia has always been drawn to traveling and cooking as hobbies. Traveling opens her mind, exposing her to new perspectives and cultures, while cooking allows her to be creative and unwind. She also devotes time to working in her church’s video ministry, a role she values deeply. “I realize that a video ministry allows more people to have access to our church services,” she explains. “My church is always looking for a way to make the community better and being part of that is really meaningful to me.”

Mia has her eyes firmly set on the future as she says, “After graduation, I hope to build a career that lets me combine my passions and skills—whether in fashion, creativity, or something new.” No matter the path, she is determined to keep learning, growing, and challenging herself. Staying true to her love of adventure, she adds, “I definitely will take some time to go on vacation and recharge—traveling helps me get inspired and come back refreshed for whatever’s next.”

Mia’s first impression of the DBP Model Team was its supportive community. “I was excited by the chance to grow my skills, get professional photos, and be part of a team that’s all about creativity and confidence,” she explains. Her favorite photoshoot so far was poolside, a lively and relaxed session that brought out her natural energy. “Being by the water made everything feel fresh and vibrant. Plus, the whole team was so encouraging, which really helped me shine in front of the camera. Those photos came out amazing, and it reminded me how great modeling can be when you’re having fun with the right people.” Mia recalls. Looking

ahead, her dream photoshoot would be in Los Angeles. “There’s something about the city’s energy, the iconic spots, and the endless creative vibes that make it the perfect backdrop. Whether it’s on a sun-soaked street, a rooftop with a skyline view, or a cool artsy neighborhood, shooting in LA feels like the ultimate way to capture style and personality,” Mia says.

For those considering joining the DBP Model Team, Mia is quick to encourage: “Do it. You’ll get amazing photos, build your confidence, learn insider tips, and be part of a creative, supportive crew.”

When it comes to fashion, Mia gravitates toward timeless elegance. Her favorite designer is Calvin Klein, admired for its blend of minimalism and sophistication. “Their pieces always feel modern and effortless, which lets me stay comfortable while looking polished. Plus, Calvin Klein has that classic vibe that never goes out of style,” she says.

With a strong foundation built on family values, a deep appreciation for education, and a fearless embrace of creativity, Mia Forte is a young woman stepping confidently into her future. Whether she is traveling the world, leading in her church, or striking a pose in front of the camera, she radiates passion and authenticity.

Kirstyn Greene

Kirstyn Greene is living proof that passion, creativity, and determination can coexist beautifully. Whether she’s modeling, volunteering, or pursuing her academic goals, Kirstyn’s energy and drive shine through in every endeavor. Balancing a busy college schedule with hobbies, family, and a flourishing modeling career, she embodies both ambition and heart.

Family is at the center of Kirstyn’s life. “My family as a whole is small and close-knit,” she says. Her parents are unwavering supporters of her academics, activities, and personal goals, always encouraging her to chase her dreams. Kirstyn shares a special bond with her younger brother, who has been her biggest fan throughout the years. “He’s my little, BIG brother. Our bond is unbreakable, and whether he knows it or not, I look up to him just as much as he does me,” she explains.

Kirstyn also shares her love for her two beloved pups, CoCo and Terrance, who bring extra joy to her family life. What makes her family truly unique, Kirstyn says, is the strength of their bond and the unconditional love they share. Even when disagreements arise, open communication and mutual respect ensure that they always work through challenges together.

Her mother serves as Kirstyn’s greatest inspiration. “She’s the most selfless person that I know and has always put the needs of others before her own,” Kirstyn shares. Watching her mother’s selflessness over the years has motivated Kirstyn to strive toward being the best version of herself in every aspect of life.

Kirstyn is a woman of many talents and interests. Her hobbies range from arts and crafts, baking, and bowling, to dancing, playing the violin, gaming, and building Legos. She’s also an active member of her college’s girls’ Esports team at Texas A&M University-Texarkana (TAMUT), and a participant in professional organizations including the Texas Society of CPAs, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Institute of Management Accountants. Beyond these pursuits, Kirstyn is deeply committed to volunteer work and giving back to her community, participating in local charities and events that help those in need. This dedication reflects not only her ambition but also her compassion and desire to make a meaningful impact.

After completing her undergraduate studies at TAMUT, Kirstyn hopes to attend the University of Texas at Austin to earn her Master of Business Administration. With a clear vision for her professional future, she aims to secure a position as an accountant with KPMG in Dallas, Texas.

Kirstyn’s passion for modeling began in middle school when she discovered the DBP Model Team through a shared Facebook link. “After reading the details of what the DBP Modeling Team consisted of, I knew that it was the right choice for me,” she recalls. Six years later, she continues to grow and flourish as a model within the team, combining her love for photography and creative expression.

Her dream photoshoot would be inspired by Barbie and Corvette, a nod to the Barbie collection she shares with her mother, which boasts over 500 dolls. Past DBP photoshoots hold special memories as well; her favorite involved posing with antique cars as a carhop, complete with a poodle skirt and a tray of Coca-Cola bottles.

Kirstyn’s style reflects her active and energetic personality, with a particular affinity for Nike. “I love their Nike Pros and athletic dresses,” she says.

For those considering joining the DBP Model Team, Kirstyn has this advice: “It’s not just picture-taking, but also a learning and branding experience.” She adds practical tips for photoshoot success: no chipped polish, avoid colors that clash with your hair, keep lipstick off your teeth, and study poses and expressions in a mirror to keep the session smooth and efficient.

With her close family, diverse interests, and unwavering determination, Kirstyn Greene is shaping a future that balances ambition, creativity, and compassion. Whether in front of the camera, pursuing her MBA, or giving back to the community, she approaches every opportunity with focus, passion, and a smile—ready to make her mark on the world.

Eden Harris

At just 14 years old, Pleasant Grove High School freshman Eden Harris is already leaving her mark through her passions, creativity, and drive for success. Whether she’s in the dance studio, cheering on her school, or sketching her next piece of art, Eden’s energy shines in everything she does.

Family plays a huge role in Eden’s life. She comes from a tight-knit household with her mom, dad, and an older sister who now lives in Colorado. Recently, her sister welcomed a baby boy named Colter—who, in a special twist, shares the middle name “Blue” with both Eden and her dad. Their family motto, “try your best at everything you do,” guides Eden in all her activities, from schoolwork to modeling.

When asked about her biggest inspiration, Eden doesn’t hesitate as she names her grandmother. “She inspires me because she’s nice, sweet, pretty, and overall, a great person,” Eden shares with a smile. That sense of kindness and confidence clearly runs in the family, and it’s something Eden hopes to carry into her future. After graduation, she plans to pursue her dream of becoming a cosmetologist, a career that blends artistry and helping others feel their best.

Eden first discovered the DBP Model Team thanks to her mom, who knew it would be a perfect fit. She’s already enjoyed several photoshoots, with her favorite being a creative session in the pool. “It is a great experience and totally worth the hype,” she says, encouraging others to step outside their comfort zone and give modeling a try. For her, the ultimate dream photoshoot would take place along the coast, with a sunset backdrop and a form-fitting dress.

When it comes to fashion, Eden gravitates toward Lululemon. “It’s comfortable and cute,” she explains—a balance of style and ease that matches her personality. As for advice on photoshoots? Eden keeps it simple: “Get your good side!”

Whether in front of the camera, on the sidelines, or in a future salon, one thing is sure—Eden will always bring passion, personality, and her best effort to everything she does.

A Mission of Care and Dignity:

Cornerstone Caregiving has been quietly changing lives in Texarkana and the surrounding areas, growing into a trusted name for families seeking compassionate, nonmedical in-home care.

At the heart of this mission is Alex Ganjizadeh, Director of Operations, who believes the organization’s success is rooted in listening and responding to the needs of the community. “At Cornerstone Caregiving, we provide a variety of non-medical in-home care services,” Alex says. “We aim to help our clients maintain their independence and dignity while living comfortably in their own homes.”

Cornerstone Caregiving offers a wide range of services that reflect the everyday challenges people face when aging or recovering from health setbacks. Alex explains, “Our services include personal care, such as assistance with bathing and dressing. We also offer companionship to keep clients socially engaged and happy. Our caregivers can help with meal preparation and medication reminders to ensure good health and nutrition.”

He continues by describing how the team goes further than basic care. “We also provide light housekeeping and transportation for appointments and errands. We also offer specialized care for those with Alzheimer’s or dementia, as well as support for veterans and individuals recovering from a hospital stay. For family caregivers, we provide respite care. We are also able to provide round-the-clock care when needed.”

According to Alex, every service is delivered with one goal in mind: supporting clients so they can remain in their homes with comfort, dignity, and safety.

The company is deeply embedded in the communities it serves. Cornerstone Caregiving extends its support beyond Texarkana into neighboring towns, reaching a wide range of families who otherwise might have limited access to quality in-home care. Cornerstone currently serves Texarkana, Atlanta, New Boston, DeKalb, De Queen, Ashdown, Hope, and Magnolia.

Being rooted in the community matters to Alex and his team. “We are a group of locals seeking to enhance the level of care for our area residents,” he says. “We believe that everyone deserves to live with dignity and independence in the comfort of their own home. We are your neighbors, committed to providing the highest quality in home care right here in our community.”

Choosing in-home care can be a difficult decision for families. That is why Cornerstone Caregiving makes the process approachable with a free in-home assessment. “We believe this is an essential first step in helping you or your loved one. This is not a sales meeting. It is a conversation where we take the time to listen and understand your situation. We will meet with you and your family in person at your home,” Alex says.

The purpose of this assessment is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the client’s needs and routines. “During this visit, we will discuss your specific needs. We will ask about daily routines and any challenges you are facing. We also look at the home environment to identify any potential safety concerns,” Alex explains. “Our goal is to create a personalized care plan that is right for you. We will go over what services would be most beneficial, and we can often start care within 24 hours of this meeting if you are ready.”

Cornerstone Caregiving

Families often find peace of mind knowing care can begin quickly and smoothly once a plan is in place. However, many often wonder what happens if an issue arises late at night or during weekends. Cornerstone Caregiving has an answer.

Alex explains, “We know that care does not stop after business hours. That is why we have an on-call team available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to answer your calls and texts. Our team is always ready to assist our caregivers, and our managers are available around the clock for any emergencies. We are here for you and your family, day or night.” This commitment to being constantly available reassures families that support is never far away.

Among its many specialized services, veteran care holds a special place for the organization. Alex emphasizes, “It is a source of great pride for us to serve those who served our country. We serve through a fully funded program through the VA to provide high-quality care right in the comfort of a veteran’s home.”

He acknowledges that the path to benefits can sometimes be confusing. “I am here to help veterans and their families navigate the VA enrollment process. I can help our veterans gain access to the benefits they have earned so they can receive the care they need at no cost to the veteran.”

The services are comprehensive, addressing not only physical needs but also emotional and social well-being. “Our services for veterans are comprehensive and personalized,” Alex explains. “We offer help with daily routines and personal care, companionship, and support for those with cognitive needs. Our goal is to honor our veterans’ service by helping them live with dignity and independence.”

He adds, “We are proud to partner with countless local and national organizations to ensure we can provide the best possible support to the veteran community.”

Cornerstone Caregiving is also forward-looking, investing in specialized training to raise the level of care even higher. Alex points to their dementia care training as an example. “We are especially proud of our specialized care programs. We provide specialized dementia training for our caregivers to ensure the best possible support for those with cognitive needs,” he says. He also reveals an exciting development on the horizon. “In fact, we are excited to announce that we will have new training sessions open to the public in 2026.”

These sessions, Alex believes, will not only help caregivers but also empower families and community members who interact with individuals facing cognitive challenges.

For families considering care options, Cornerstone Caregiving positions itself as a dependable, compassionate choice. Alex says, “Our goal is to create a personalized care plan that is right for you.” The company’s accessible approach, wide range of services, veteran support, around-the-clock availability, and commitment to specialized training all reflect its deep commitment to client well-being.

The Cornerstone Caregiving team remains focused on its mission of care and dignity.

Mixing Faith, Flavor, and Energy with Krazy Kat

When life hands most people lemons, they make lemonade. When life handed Katheryn Schmidt a financial crisis, she prayed, and came out with Krazy Kat’s Loaded Waters, a faith-fueled line of loaded caffeine waters, protein coffees, and protein waters that’s already gaining local buzz.

Schmidt says her business is not only about creative drinks but about a bigger purpose. “I thank God for this whole thing every day,” she explains, pointing to Him as the inspiration behind each product she sells.

The quirky brand name comes with its own backstory. Schmidt explains, “My name in college was Krazy Kat, so it is just a name I have always had. It’s kinda catchy, so I just went with it.”

That lighthearted nickname has now become a recognizable brand across Texarkana, USA, and Hope, Arkansas, showing up on labels, at flea markets, and in storefronts. For Schmidt, the familiarity of the name makes people smile, and that is precisely the point.

Schmidt says the idea for the business came in a season of loss and searching. “It was honestly a God-driven business,” she shares. After losing her second job, she was unsure how to afford her medication. She explains, “I knew that I didn’t want to keep being a CNA. I needed a break. So, I asked God, ‘Show me a way.’”

Out of that prayer, a new business was born. Schmidt was already spending about $10 a day on energy drinks and wanted something healthier and more affordable. She began researching, experimenting, and learning how to work within the Texas Cottage Law. What she developed became Krazy Kat’s Loaded Waters.

“It’s a sealed bag that you mix with 40 ounces of water to make you a loaded energy drink with around 200 milligrams of caffeine,” Schmidt explains. “I also have protein waters and coffee. Each water has a Bible verse— except for the hydration line. Because God created the water!”

Schmidt says customers can easily place orders through Facebook by messaging her directly. Pickup is simple: “We have some pickup locations—the downtown flea market in Hope, Arkansas, Flowers on Richmond, Shorty’s Donuts, and inside Sitters, located at 2010 Moore’s Lane, Suite 111, in Texarkana, Texas. Alternatively, you can text 903-556-9079,” she says.

For those looking for a quick grab-and-go option, Schmidt has even set up a pickup box for convenience. She believes accessibility is key to helping her customers make healthier, more energizing choices.

Plenty of energy drinks line store shelves, but Schmidt says hers are unique. “Mine are made with organic stevia, and I try to stay away from Red Dye 40 if I can,” she explains.

She believes her focus on better ingredients, combined with the faith-based touch of including scripture on the labels, gives her products a heart as well as a boost. “Each drink is meant to give energy,” Schmidt says, “but also a reminder of where my energy comes from.”

When asked about her top sellers, Schmidt lights up. “The Popper, Mermaid Water, Nat’s Special, Boss Babe, and the Unicorn,” she lists off, noting that her customers have favorites just as much as she does.

As for her personal preference, she does not hesitate. “I love most of the Beauty Bombs, protein iced coffee, and I also love the berry caffeine line. That’s my favorite,” Schmidt says with a smile.

Schmidt says she wants Krazy Kat’s Loaded Waters to be more than just a personal business. She hopes to see it in more storefronts, food trucks, and local shops. “If you own a local business, or a food truck, or anything, and would like to have them in your storefront, please contact me,” she says. Interested partners can reach her by email at krazykatsdesigns@gmail.com.

For Schmidt, Krazy Kat’s Loaded Waters is more than a side hustle or a way to make ends meet. It is, as she says, the answer to a prayer. “God is the one behind my whole business,” Schmidt believes, giving Him credit for every step of her journey from job loss to entrepreneurship.

As her brand grows, Schmidt keeps both her faith and her customers at the center of her mission. With delicious flavors, sweetened with organic stevia, and wrapped in encouragement straight from scripture, Krazy Kat’s is making waves—one loaded water at a time.

For the Month of October, Krazy Kat will be donating 5% of their profits to Jessica Rhea Foundation

“Starting in the floral business at Leaf and Petal in Thomasville, Alabama, I knew I wanted to own a shop—something I achieved with my first store, Forget Me Knot, and now with Flowers on Richmond. I’m grateful for the love and support I’ve received, which has allowed me to travel the world, helping with weddings and working with amazing people. Flowers have always called me back because they express everything. Say it with Flowers on Richmond—thank you for trusting me to bring your floral visions to life. I love what I do.”

Shopping for a Mortgage? Good…. We Think You Should.

At Farmers Bank and Trust, we believe that one of the smartest things you can do when shopping for a home is to shop for your mortgage, too

Most banks don’t want you to compare rates. We do. In fact, we encourage it. Our slogan says it all: “Get another quote.”

Why? Because buying a home is one of the biggest financial decisions you’ll ever make — and you deserve the best possible deal. That’s why we offer competitive rates, low fees, and clear, honest guidance at every step of the mortgage process.

Whether you’re a first-time buyer or refinancing your forever home, we want you to look at all your options. Compare our rates. Read the fine print. Ask the hard questions. We’re confident you’ll like what you see.

And if you find a better offer? Talk to us. We’ll work with you to match it — or even beat it. Because at Farmers Bank and Trust, we’re not afraid of a little competition. We welcome it.

We don’t want to sell you just any mortgage. We want to help you find the right one — the one that fits your budget, your lifestyle, and your longterm goals.

So, before you sign on the dotted line, do yourself a favor:

Get another quote. Then talk to us.

Farmers Bank and Trust — Get another quote. Then get the mortgage you deserve.

A LENDER YOU CAN

For many, buying a home is the largest financial event of their life. If you’re looking to buy a home this fall, you deserve the peace of mind knowing that your lender has the experience and knowledge to do the job right.

Suzie TK SnippeTS

The Wild Adventures Of Suzie

The old phrase, “If it weren’t for bad luck, I wouldn’t have any luck at all,” comes from the 1967 blues song “Born Under a Bad Sign” by Albert King. I have to admit, that’s how I’ve felt these past few weeks!

It all started with a plumbing problem when the cutoff valve wouldn’t work. In between bailing out water, I called my neighbor, who finally cut it off at the water meter. So now I had no water. Thankfully, I had just ordered several cases of Mountain Valley Water in anticipation of Karmyn’s visit. (Singers do go through a lot of water!)

Do you realize how dependent we are on water? Showers, toilet flushing, hand washing—the list is endless! I was beyond grateful when a good plumber friend came the very next day and fixed everything.

No sooner had I caught my breath than my car decided to join in on the trouble. These modern cars—anything made after 2000—are run by computers, and mine started talking back.

After picking up Karmyn at the airport, we headed to see Miss Maddie, the “apple of our eye.” After our visit and with strict instructions from Justin to stay off I-30, we took the back roads home. Just as I turned onto Moore’s Lane, my dashboard flashed: Right low beam failure. Lovely—it was 9 p.m.!

Moments later, I saw red and blue lights in my rearview mirror. I pulled into the Moore’s Lane First Baptist Church parking lot (a safe place, I thought). The officer informed me my headlight was out—exactly what my screen had warned. I explained it had just come on, and thankfully, he let me off with only a warning.

The next day, I tried three different places to get the light fixed, but no luck. Since I had to drive to Dallas, we went anyway, took care of business, spent the night, and made it safely home before dark. I have to say – I was proud of myself, maneuvering through Dallas traffic at 82 years old.

We squeezed in visits with friends and family before taking Karmyn to the brand-new Texarkana Airport Terminal for her flight back to New York. Sigh. I thought I could finally relax.

The very next morning, I headed to Wilson Firestone to deal with my headlight. Low on gas, I stopped at Walmart to refuel – but when I hit the start button, the car wouldn’t start. After a failed attempt to jump it, I called a tow truck. At the shop, Drew, the mechanic, checked it over: I needed a new battery, and he went ahead and replaced the light too. Now my car purrs like a kitten.

I’m thankful the breakdown didn’t happen in Dallas traffic or while taking Karmyn to the airport. God really does take care of little old ladies who know little about the mechanical side of cars but still have places to go!

Thank you, friends, for reading about my latest “grand adventure.”

GENERATING REVENUE FROM UNUSED LAND

MARKETS & INVESTING

For many investors, land ownership is part of the American Dream. But what happens when the land you own sits idle? While it can appreciate in value over time, growth isn’t always a given. If the land doesn’t appreciate, you may find yourself holding onto a “nonperforming asset.”

If you intend to hold onto the land, whether in the short term or with the intention of passing it down for generations to come, you’re likely subject to property taxes and liabilities that can cost you.

And while it can be fun to dream of striking oil on your property like a scene from a 1960s sitcom, there are more realistic ways to generate income from your unused land that don’t rely so heavily on luck.

Land ownership presents a host of opportunities that can help offset its costs and generate profit depending on your level of involvement and tolerance for intrusion. Whether you own land already or intend to buy some in the future, here are some ways to make the most of your investment.

Glamping site

Glamping, an oxymoronic portmanteau of glamour and camping, has exploded in popularity in recent years, boasting a $3.45 billion market in 2024 and expected to grow an additional 10.3% over the next five years.

The glamping trend lures those who seek the adventure of the great outdoors without sacrificing modern comforts and luxuries like electricity and running water. Turning your unused land into a glamping destination can attract a wide range of folk depending on your willingness to invest in amenities.

Traditional camping requires only a nice spot in the wilderness, but to score a return on your glamping site investment, you may also need to trick out your land with amenity-rich motor coaches, campers and luxury tents. Building this infrastructure will add to your investment, but it will broaden the appeal of your glampsite to include a wider range of guests,

making a place for those who want to glamp but don’t own a palace on wheels.

Cell tower lease

If your land has proximity to power and communications utilities, leasing a small piece for a cell tower can net passive income from your property. Typically, the operator of the tower will finance its construction, eliminating overhead cost to you, and you can earn $400 to $2,000 a month, with annual escalations.

The amount you can earn each month depends on factors like nearby population density. There are several companies that can help facilitate the construction and lease of a cell tower on your land, from connecting you with a tower operator to assisting with contract negotiations to guarantee fair compensation.

Hunting or fishing lease

If your land is home to wild game and spans a large enough area to comply with local laws and regulations, then leasing it for hunting or fishing purposes can be a great way to generate income.

Doing so requires no initial investment in infrastructure, and in some cases can help you control the population of destructive species like wild hogs on your property. Just be sure to protect yourself from liability in the event of an accident by creating wavers for those who hunt and fish on your land.

Billboard advertising

Not all land benefits from privacy and remoteness, but exposure and visibility can create opportunities of their own. If you have property that borders a highway or other high-traffic area, then constructing

and leasing advertising space could help you profit from its location.

Stretches of land along roads can allow for multiple billboards at once, and the more visibility your land has to the public eye, the more profitable your advertisements can be. You can construct and operate your own, or – as with a cell tower lease – contract with a third party for either a share of their profits in exchange for the use of your land or a one-time lump sum payment for a permanent easement.

Vehicle storage

Perhaps one of the simplest and most obvious ways to generate income from your unused land is to rent it out as a parking lot. From RVs and boats to commercial trailers, many large vehicles need a place to stay when not in use. If your land has a large, level area, then charging rent for storing vehicles there may be an ideal way to squeeze steady income from it.

Factors like climate, accessibility and security will determine how much people are willing to pay, so investments in paving and shelter, like garages and hangars, can help increase your earning potential.

No matter what you decide to do with the land you own already or are considering buying, as with any venture it’s important to make sure you do it right. That means consulting with professionals like attorneys, CPAs and your financial advisor to make sure that the legal, tax and financial implications of your land-generated income meet your expectations and contribute toward your long-term financial goals.

New Subdivision lake lots Available Eagles way North and South

What a place to be, waking up in the mornings, overlooking the lake on SW Arkansas best kept secret, Beautiful Lake Erling. Privacy, seclusion, and serenity, all while watching the deer, turkey, and other wildlife in your own back yard. You are steps away from some of the South’s best fishing. These beautiful lots with lake frontage are limited and are beginning to sell quickly. This is a gated subdivision with limited access. Lakefront property is extremely hard to find and availability is very limited on this lake. B.A.S.S. ranked Lake Erling the top 100 lakes in the United States.
