Current Activities Work is well underway at Kindergarten 140 in Santa Cruz de Villacuri and good progress is being made. All of the rebar columns have been built and are in place in all four plots. In plots A and C, which will be four classrooms, the binding columns have been poured, the concrete blocks are laid and backfill and compaction is taking place. In plot D, the kitchen, WaSH and office, the foundation footings are being poured.

When they’re not on the construction site, staff and volunteers are keeping themselves busy with a wide range of wonderful community engagement activities, including English/Spanish lessons, art workshops, karaoke nights and “Happy Fun Time” (as showcased in the February update). The team also managed to raise an impressive $10,000 from last months on-program fundraising!

Disaster Profile The 2007 Peru earthquake, which measured 7.9 on the moment magnitude scale, hit the central coast of Peru on August 15th. The cities of Pisco, Ica and Chincha Alta in the Ica Region were most affected. On August 28, 2007, the government reported 89 schools affected. Thirteen years later, only 50 percent of the affected schools have been rebuilt by the government and 30 schools remain affected and their students displaced.

Our Work With the support of our generous donors, partners and volunteers, we are working to rebuild Institucion Educativa Inicial 140 Kindergarten of Santa Cruz de Villacuri, which has been declared unsafe for use by the Civil Defense Authority due to the insufficient and precarious structural design of the building. All Hands and Hearts is rebuilding a new, safe and resilient school, inclusive of a 10,000 liter underground water tank, which will provide a constant supply of water to the school community.
