NEPAL EARTHQUAKE UPDATE - SINDHULI (December 2018)

CURRENT ACTIVITIES (RECOVERY) Our newest recovery efforts in Nepal have officially begun! Our team is on the ground helping the remote communities in Bajhe and Ritthabot, Sindhuli where they live without access to electricity and proper transportation among many other basic necessities. We are providing safe classrooms, appropriate toilets and installing water filtration units for clean drinking water for the students at Ma Vi and Saraswati Schools. We are also rebuilding toilets, installing water filtration systems and improving the situation of existing buildings and playground at Uccha Ma Vi. Ma Vi ● Completion of Phase I- Foundation to plinth beam, which includes: ○ Excavation work for foundation of the 2 storey 4 room building. ○ PCC work and Rebar placement for 12 columns, their footings and double tie beams. This will make the building structurally sound while performing against seismic forces (earthquakes). ○ Concrete pour for footings. ● Site Clearance work for construction of toilets.

Saraswati ● Completion of site development work. ● Preparation for foundation beams.

Uccha Ma Vi ● Site clearance and excavation for foundation completed, masonry work currently at lintel band level. ● Excavation and brick wall completed for septic tank. ● Shallow well is nearly complete, this will be the water source for the school. ● Plaster work completed for parapet wall of existing school building. Drainage maintenance work completed. ● Installation of playground accessories completed. ● Finished painting on the first out of three pre disaster buildings.

Local Sindhuli families welcomed our staff and volunteers with traditional celebratory Tika paint, marigold necklaces, and bouquets of flowers. We are already feeling at home in this beautiful community!

DISASTER PROFILE On April 25, 2015, 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook Nepal. Less than three weeks later, on May 12, a 7.3-magnitude earthquake followed. These were compounded by hundreds of high-intensity aftershocks.

The people of Nepal felt the impact of these disasters with over 9,000 fatalities. Over 600,000 homes and 8,000 schools were destroyed, disrupting the life of 8 million people, including the education of 3.2 million children.

OUR WORK Thanks to critical support from partners, donors, local communities, and volunteers from around the world, All Hands and Hearts - Smart Response has run an impactful program in Nepal since April 2015. Now three years on, we continue to respond to the community’s needs with our local partner Relief Nepal. From the response phase of rubbling and debris removal immediately following the earthquakes to the current recovery phase of rebuilding schools, we’ve rebuilt 17 schools in Nepal and are dedicated to continue the work of giving the children of Nepal safe places to learn and play.

By listening to local people, and deploying a unique model of engaging volunteers to enable direct impact, we rebuild safe, resilient schools, homes and other community infrastructure.
